It’s no secret that before the inaugural season of the WSBA can even get started, the Denver Peaks are already looking to make some major moves.  General Manager Terry Brooks is rumored to be shopping star small forward Winston Luton around the league.  The Peaks are rumored to be searching for a package that includes either a center or a shooting guard, along with future draft picks.

Most GMs around the league have not yet been willing to go on record with regards to their interest in Luton.  However, Reed Vasko of the Los Angeles Commodores has confirmed that he is in active negotiations with Denver.  Vasko was unwilling to identify any specific players he was willing to trade away, but admitted that their weakness at the small forward position along with Denver’s need on the inside may create a path to a potential deal.

When reached for comment, Vasko stated, “Like I said in my conference earlier, we’re looking at creating depth around the court.  Luton is a great supporting piece for Josh (Gray)  and Jason (DeManby).  We are working very hard to bring him to Los Angeles without sacrificing the core.”

Brooks provided further confirmation that a deal may be imminent earlier today.  “Ah yes, here at the Denver Peaks we can confirm that we are in talks with the Commodores to trade Winston Luton.  Talks have gone back and forth over long hours over many different pieces to move that benefit both teams and both parties are nearing conclusion to these talks.  While Luton has been a fantastic contributor to the Denver Peaks, I was brought in as general manager for one reason and that was to build Denver into something more.  What more is that, well the fans and the rest of the league will have to stay tuned as the Peaks look to confirm more business down the line.  Thank you for your time.”  Brooks did not provide additional details concerning any other potential moves.

Luton is a 31 year old small forward from Northwestern with one year left on a contract that will pay him just under 23 million dollars.  Given Los Angeles’ salary cap, the former 6th overall draft pick will likely be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.  However, his scoring ability and the obvious hole that he fills on the Commodores’ wing makes them an instant championship contender.  While the presence of Luton in Los Angeles may change the dynamics of the upcoming season, it is yet to be determined what the potential long term affects the trade may have on both teams.
Luton could not be reached for comment.
