Mr. Garcon Your Time Has Arrived

Larry Garcon grew up in the small French town of Reims being born on . His parents Mikel and Marie Garcon were athletic in their youth, both playing Futbol (there's a cute story of how they met). Larry followed in their footsteps, playing futbol up until he was sixteen. Unlike his parents, Larry had another athletic passion. He also played basketball from a young age alongside futbol.

Larry would be a better basketball than futbol player, he would grow to 6'4''. He played in amateur leagues for awhile, instead of deciding to continue playing basketball he moved into coaching at the young age of twenty. He would coach within France until he was twenty six (2003).

He then would become an instant coach in the Israeli Leagues, until 2005. He would then be hired to be an instant coach in an English Basketball league. Where he would coach as an assistant until 2009. This is where his career took a drastic change, he became the Head Coach of his current team in England. He held the position for one season and led the team to drastic improvements.

When Larry Brown decided to step down as Coach of the Charlotte Bobcats, new owner Michael Jordan decided to look outside of the normal candidates to find a new coach. Jordan heard Garcon's name while searching for candidates. After interviewing for the job, Jordan decided to hire Garcon to a 4 year, $736,750 contract. Larry Garcon's name became a talking point on ESPN and many talk radio shows.

While Garcon does not have say with player management, Jordan felt that Garcon's aggressive defensive and rebounding approach would take the Bobcats to new levels. Garcon knows there's a good deal of challenges in front of him, the Southeast has solid teams as the Hawks, Magic, and the newly dubbed "Best Team Ever" Heat. It will take a great deal to make the Playoffs, but Garcon is going to put a lot of effort into his position. Hopefully, General Manager Rod Higgins will be on the same page, as it will take a great effort to take this team towards a championship.

October 31, 2010

We come to a team meeting between Head Coach Larry Garcon and his assistant coaches, Phil Ford, Jeff Capel, and Herb Brown. They have been speaking for an hour about the upcoming season, sitting around an oval desk in Garcon's office.

The starting lineup was decided a few weeks ago, newcomer Shaun Livingston and DJ Augustine will split time starting at Point Guard, Stephen Jackson will again start at SG, the amazing Gerald Wallace will start at SF, Boris Diaw at PF, and Tyrus Thomas at Center.

The bench will not have an explosive scorer, but Matt Carol, Augustine/Livingstone, and Eduardo Najera will play important roles.

Garcon: Our season begins with us in Cleveland on the 2nd and then we have Miami at home on the 4th. After that Detroit comes into town on the 6th.

(His French accent stands out, the coaches around him nod.)

Ford: We should pump up our guys for Miami. If we can defeat them on the second game of the season, we send a statement to the NBA.

(Garcon appreciates the enthusiasm as the other coaches agree.)

Garcon: True, True. But, we have to concentrate on the Cavs. I'll be honest, they are a lot weaker this year. We should be able to start the season off with a win. If we stop Jameson, we win the game.

Brown: Agreed. Cleveland plays tonight, we should definitely watch the game.

Capel: It starts in an hour.

Garcon: I guess we're spending a few more hours together.

(The group of coaches laugh as they continue speaking.)

The date is November 22, 2010

If you would have asked Larry at the beginning of the season, he wouldn't have known what to tell you about the team's projected success. Especially after being picked to finish third to last in the Eastern Division. But he did know one thing...

...The team would play Defense....

On opening day November 2, The Bobcats would be the Lebron-less Cavs 100-96 in Cleveland. Steven Jackson exploded and led the Bobcats with an outstanding 48 points, going 5-10 from behind the arc.

The 4th brought the vaunted Heat into Charlotte (only 17,205 tickets sold) and was the basketball world stunned. Charlotte took the Heat in overtime, using their defense to suffocate the explosive Heat. Lebron only scored 15, Bosh 12, and Wade 11. Jackson scored 20 and had 9 rebounds along with 4 Assists, 3 Steals, and 2 Blocks. Wallace dropped 22 and had 12 Rebounds. The final score was 83-84.

On the 6th Detroit came into town and would defeat the mentally exhausted Bobcats 101-95. Jackson scored 25, Thomas had 18, Diaw had 15, and Wallace 13. But the team effort from Detroit was just too much. Garcon was not happy with the defensive effort and was staggered by Wallace's early shooting woes. He shrugged it off as three games wasn't enough for him to judge.

On the 8th the Bobcats were blasted by the Knicks in New York 90-112. Only Jackson (36) and Carrol (10) scored in double figures. Stoudemire scored 25 with 10 Rebounds (perfect 13-13 from the line), Gallinari had 19, Bill Walker scored 17, and Felton had 13 with 8 assists. During the day off in Charlotte, Garcon put the team through some defensive drills, not in the least bit happy with the effort in the past two games.

On the 10th the Hornets came into town. The defense showed up and took the Hornets 82-92. Jackson stroked 44 with 8 rebounds and Wallace scored 15 with 6 boards. Paul scored 18 and had 8 Assists and West scored 16. Surprisingly Livingston had 10 Assists off the bench.

On the 12th the Raptors came into tow and again the Bobcats played great defense winning 88-98 forcing 18 turnovers (but gave up 18 as well). Jackson had 24 and 6 boards, Wallace scored 21, Livingston started and scored 16 to go along with 6 Assists (but 4 turnovers). Jack had 22 points.

On the 14th the Nuggets, George Karl and Carmello Anthony came into town. The Bobcats tenacious D again was suffocating defeating the Nuggets 85-98. Mello had 15, Smith 16. Jackson scored 25 with 7 Rebounds and 3 Assists. Livingston who got the start again scored 16 with 5 Assists and 0 turnovers.

After the game Diaw and Wallace got into a shouting match. Garcon let the incident slide, as arguments will happen from time to time. The Bobcats were sitting 5-2 and the only team to have defeated the Heat. Garcon knew they were going to have to continue playing well to have a playoff run.

Utah came into town on the 17th(First home sell out of the season) and just edged out a victory 100-97. In a very competitive match. Jackson had a monster game with 50 points (8-12 from three), 5 Steals, 3 Blocks, and 3 Assists. Wallace had 14 points and 8 Rebounds. The Utah had a balanced scoring effort and it was enough. The Bobcats continued to have turnover problems and had 22 (7 from Jackson).

Orlando and Stan Van Gundy(Who was T'ed up during the game) came to Charlotte on the 19th and it was a record setting night. The teams combined for a record 29 3's. Yes, 29 3's. The Magics hit 14 (going 14-28) and the Bobcats hit 15 (going 15-37). The Magics won 105-94. Jackson had 42 (8-18 from three), Wallace had 18 points, 7 Rebounds, and 3 Assists, Diaw had 13 points and 10 Rebounds. The Magics had balanced scoring and Redick had 17 off the bench. Howard only had 12 as the game was quickly paced.

Garcon did not like the defensive effort and how the team failed to close out on some 3's.

On the 21st, Dallas came into town and handled the Bobcats 99-81. Dirk had 33, Butler had 16, and Kidd had 14 and 6 Assists. Jackson had 28 in the losing effort. The loss pulled the Bobcats to 5-5. As they prepared for Atlanta on the 24th, then home the 25th and 27th against the Bucks and 76ers.

Garcon sits in his office with his Assistant Phil Ford.

Garcon: We really need Wallace to start scoring to help out Jackson. He hasn't been consistent so far.

Garcon sighs

Ford: I agree..Someone else needs to score on this team. When our defense shows up we have a chance every night. Jackson can't score 50 a night.

Garcon: Agreed, I'm starting Livingston at the Point more often. He seems to give the team the best chance right now. A.J.'s sprained finger has slowed him down the past week.

Ford: He hasn't looked completely comfortable either. I think Najera has earned more playing time, he's been hustling out there.

Garcon nods as he leans back in his chair

Garcon: I agree, we just have to keep playing with the lineup until we find something that works. I almost wish we had the pieces to bring Wallace off the bench.

Ford: That would be good for him. I just want someone else to step up.

Garcon: We'll see how these next few weeks will go.
