You're Moving Us To Toronto?!!

February Awards –

Player of the Month: Tyreke Evans, Sacramento Kings – 23.2 points, 7.3 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 2.7 steals per game.

Rookie of the Month: Osmo Koslewski, Detroit Pistons – 17.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.1 steals and 0.7 blocks per game.

There were HEAPS of trades this month, mainly because of the trade deadline.

New York trades:
C Andris Biedrins

Utah trades:
SG Arron Afflalo

Why for New York:
Raymond Felton has gone down with a foot injury and the Knicks have a shortage of starting calibre guards so they trade Biedrins who was being pushed out of the line-up by Kelvin Rivers and bring in a player who slots into the starting line-up in Afflalo until Felton comes back.

Why for Utah:
In a strange move I will cover later, the Jazz now have Brendan Haywood starting at C with Biedrins coming off the bench as 6th man. They needed another big man in the worst way which they got for comparable value.

Winner – Both
If the Jazz’s next trade comes into account then I would say New York but solely on this one it’s a wash.

Memphis trades:
2017 1st round pick

Utah trades:
C Nikola Pekovic

Why for Memphis:
Although Pekovic is injured right now with a broken finger, when he returns he will make up an awfully good front court in Memphis. And the good part for the Grizzlies? The pick will be super low as they are now sitting on a 38-22 record.

Why for Utah:
I’m not quite sure. The best explanation would be that as being 24-33 they have decided that playoffs are out of the question and are rebuilding, shedding Pekovic’s large salary in the process. But they could have got much more for him seeing as Pekovic is coming off an All Star selection THIS YEAR.

Winner – Memphis
I hope Memphis bought Utah dinner before they screwed them over.

Oklahoma City trades:
PF Jeff Green

Milwaukee trades:
SF Wilson Chandler

Why for Oklahoma City:
They now have a player that can spell Kevin Durant without the whole game going out the window. Chandler is only 29 years old so can stay with the Thunder for a while yet.

Why for Milwaukee:
Andrew Reed has come out of nowhere to become one of the best young talents, but before this trade the Bucks had big, slow Cs trying to come off the bench and play PF. So in comes Green who will stretch the floor for slashers Jrue Holiday and Trevor Ariza.

Winner – Both
They both got what they wanted out of this trade, so good for them.

Los Angeles Clippers trades:
PF Sam Wynn

Denver trades:
PF Larry Sanders

Why for the Clippers:
Sam Wynn was one of the bright sparks out of the second round as he became an actual decent player instead of trade filler. The LAC front court was squeezing him out so they got a big expiring contract out of him in Larry Sanders who slots into the 6th man position for the Clips.

Why for Denver:
Wynn slots into the Nuggets’ 6th man position also but have one more year on his contract worth over $7 million a year, but Denver needed quality bench bigs which Wynn is, for the most part.

Winner – Los Angeles Clippers
They get a one year shorter contract while not dropping off on quality.

Los Angeles Lakers trades:
PG Devin Davenport

Chicago trades:
SG Elliot Williams

Why for the Lakers:
The Lakers’ time is now so trading away a decent young player for a proven older player is what they needed. Although Davenport could be better than Williams down the track they needed a SG to come off the bench now.

Why for Chicago:
The Bulls needed point guard depth like a diabetic needs insulin. Now with Davenport on the team they have a total of two true PGs, the other being starter Rodrigue Beaubois.

Winner – Los Angeles Lakers
Williams will help them now while Davenport has a little bust motif going on.

New York trades:
PF Drew Gooden

Miami trades:
PF Antawn Jamison

Why for New York:
To make a trade. Seriously, this has no positive attributes for New York as Jamison is 39 years old and washed up. At least Gooden still has some go in him.

Why for Miami:
Gooden is only 34 years old and is sitting as the Heat’s 8th man, which is a lot better than what Jamison was placed.

Winner – Miami
I’m not sure what the Knicks were thinking while the Heat get better.

Los Angeles Lakers trades:
PG Tony Parker
2017 1st round pick

Milwaukee trades:
SF Quinn Trent

Why for the Lakers:
The Frenchman Parker has lost a step which kills his play while Trent may not be the best at anything he has enough talents to be a quality back up.

Why for Milwaukee:
With Parker on the team they now have five PGs filling up their roster, while the pick will be in the low 20s.

Winner – Los Angeles Lakers
At least they got something of value; the same can’t be said about Milwaukee.

So no big name trades and I wouldn’t call many of them average name trades, I think a lot of teams just wanted to make a trade so they would get some media attention.

Well that is disappointing. We are one win away from 50 wins up against the lowly Cavs. So what do we do? We shoot 34% from the field with Jason Beck shooting 3/17 with Jordan Crawford top scoring with 22 points. Reggie Young shot badly but had a massive 22 rebounds and Carmelo Anthony scored 22 points and finally MAXIME Videnov is starting, which is good for the team in general.

Detroit Pistons 49-14

Chucky Durden blasts Mike Woodson again so luckily he is a free agent and we have a certain Colin Horvath to take his place next season.

After a crazy eight days without a game we go to New Jersey and lose again, 113-105. Danny Granger finally plays well against us with 27 points while Mo Williams had 24 points and 7 assists of his own. Dirk Nowitzki doubles up off the bench with 11 points and 10 rebounds but Jordan Crawford nullified his 22 points with 7 turnovers.

Detroit Pistons 49-15

Although the trade deadline has passed I’m very interested to try a Dexter Floyd/Ekpe Udoh front court as they demolish Golden State in our 112-92 win. Floyd had 16 points, 9 rebounds and 6 blocks while Udoh teamed up with 11 points, 8 rebounds and 6 blocks off the bench. Ty Lawson was our best with 21 points and 9 assists but his opponent was no slouch either as Steph Curry had 26 points and 7 assists.

Detroit Pistons 50-15

Woo! 50 wins!

Jason Beck just hasn’t been as good as I thought he would be and his contract is HUGE, so come draft time I will be trying to trade him to anyone who will listen.

Another loss, this time to Chicago 119-113 as we have a meltdown, leading by as much as 12 in the third term. Carlos Boozer and Justin Cabrera go wild with 30 points, 25 rebounds and 7 blocks between them as our only highlight was Orko with 28 points. Derrick Rose can’t come back quick enough.

Detroit Pistons 50-16

We get revenge the next night with a 90-83 win back in the comfort of Detroit. Dex Floyd battles with Justin Cabrera all night and has 15 points, 18 rebounds and 3 blocks to counter Cabrera’s 9 points, 21 rebounds and 9 blocks. Luckily we had Ty Lawson and Jordan Crawford to do the scoring, as they had 16 and 14 points respectively. Unfortunately Crawford strained his knee in the third term, and although he didn’t go out of the game the doctors have given him a two week holiday until he heals.

Detroit Pistons 51-16

With two minutes to go and up by 10 points you would think that we had it in the bag, right? Wrong. Boston scores the next 10 points to force the game into overtime and then outscores us 13-4 in the extra period to win 103-94 and these late game collapses are really starting to piss me off. Tony Rein had 30 points while Andrea Bargnani and Chris Bosh make fools out of our front court with12 points, 14 rebounds and 5 blocks for Bargnani and 10 points, 14 rebounds and 4 blocks for Bosh. On our side? Dex Floyd with 4 points, 20 rebounds and 5 blocks while Jason Beck had 6 points on 3/13 shooting. Jeff Brown played well in a starting role with 18 points but my mind is made up, Jason Beck is going to get traded this offseason.

Detroit Pistons 51-17

The front court must have heard me screaming as Dex Floyd has 22 points and 16 rebounds and Jason Beck 19 points but it isn’t enough as we crumble again, this time going down to Miami 113-94 as they outscored us 64-34 in the second half. Dwayne Wade put on a show with 27 points while Kobe Bryant shot poorly for 19 points. Aaargh, this team is so unbelievably inconsistent.

Detroit Pistons 51-18

Six losses in eight games with a 101-89 defeat to Chicago as I have just noticed that we have nine away games in a row and 13 of our last 15 games on the road. Yikes. This one was game three of our road nightmare and we are currently 0-3. Third year player Emmett Cooper was the best on the court with 20 points and 7 rebounds while newly acquired Devin Davenport had 11 points off the bench. I’m not even going to go over our players, it was just embarrassing.

Detroit Pistons 51-19

Zero from four as we lose to Toronto in a very winnable game, 101-92. We were level at three quarter time but our trademark collapse reared its heard. Trent Bailey of all people beat us with 27 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds while D&M teamed up for 25 points, 22 rebounds and 5 blocks. To counter that Jason Beck went 1/5 from the field for 5 points and Dex Floyd had 10 points, 15 rebounds and 4 blocks. Orko took advantage of Kevin King being injured with 29 points but I’m sick of us collapsing and we need our two star guards healthy to do any damage.

Detroit Pistons 51-20

Nine days for Rose and seven for Crawford.

116-101 is the score of our fifth loss in a row, this time to Milwaukee. Jrue Holiday had 24 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists while ex-Piston Trevor Ariza had 25 points as they ran us over from the get-go. Ekpe Udoh had a massive (for him) 29 points and 6 blocks, helped by Jason Beck’s 22 points but they shot a massive 43 free throws which hurt us all over the court.

Detroit Pistons 51-21

We started the month with an embarrassing loss to Cleveland, but tonight we snap our losing streak with a 115-92 win over Cleveland. Ty Lawson and Jeff Brown do their best Rose/Crawford impression with 26 and 22 points respectively which let our bigs do that they do best in rebound and defend. Carmelo Anthony needed 20 shots for his 21 points as they were held to only 40% shooting. Phew, that’s a relief.

Detroit Pistons 52-21

It’s two wins in a row with a 110-106 win over Sacramento as Orko lit the Kings up with 25 points in 31 minutes. Ekpe Udoh is becoming my favourite player, bench or not, with 20 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocks and he is showing a scoring touch that he didn’t have in previous seasons. DeMarcus Cousins had 23 points and superstar Tyreke Evans 21 points and 8 assists but they couldn’t contain our three point shooters, as we went 50% from downtown.

Detroit Pistons 53-21

Game eight of our nine game road nightmare is a 95-84 beatdown from Washington, as Omer Asik and Michael Nicholson come out on top of our front court. Asik had 19 points and 14 rebounds while Nicholson doubled up as we shot 39% from the floor with Jason Beck having 18 points and 12 rebounds on 8/17 shooting.

Detroit Pistons 53-22

Jordan Crawford is fully fit while Derrick Rose has been given the all clear to play with us again which equals a 109-88 win over Houston as Rose picked up from where he left off with 22 points and 11 assists while Crawford had 14 points. This was a real team effort as we had seven players in double figure scoring, while Houston’s top scorer was Andray Blatche with 15 points.

Detroit Pistons 54-22

We went 3-6 on our nine game road nightmare which puts us third in the East, with Toronto leading at 57-17 and New York right behind at 53-20. Cleveland look to have the wooden spoon all sewn up as they are seven games behind (in front?) of Charlotte at 17-58.

The Lakers are still topping the West with their 46-27 record but Dallas, Portland, the Clippers and Minnesota are all good chances of snatching top seed. Seattle won a whopping four games that month and put them on the cusp of not being the worst team ever, as they sit on the bottom with a 8-65 record.

Fourth and final round of draft prospects (previous rank in brackets) –

1 (4) – PF Matt Landram (Virginia Tech) Freshman
Would you look at that? Landram is now 0.8 rebounds away from averaging a double double on the season. It looks like he is finally finding his groove.

2 (5) – PF Damon Alexander (Georgia Tech) Junior
Numbers – 32.2 points, 14.5 rebounds and 6.6 assists per game. Not much else to say.

3 (1) – PF Jarrett Omara (Kentucky) Junior
A better defender than either of the other PFs above him as his numbers show – 3.4 blocks and 2.3 steals per game as a Yellow Jacket.

4 (2) – PG Sam Baron (Michigan State) Sophomore
This year is the ‘put up huge numbers’ college crop as Baron is averaging 28 points, 10 assists and 6 rebounds per game and is still only the fourth ranked player. BTW, the other MSU PG, Jeremy Dixon is averaging 25 points, 10 assists, 9 rebounds and 3 steals and is only at #7.

5 (NR) – PF Mike Garner (UCLA) Sophomore
Back in the top five with his sizzling month of play, but there is still another two PFs below him, making it six PFs in the top 10 draft prospects.

I’m too excited for the end of this season so I’m going to continue.

March awards –

Player of the Month: Dwayne Wade, Miami Heat – 25.1 points, 7.3 assists, 3.9 rebounds, 1.9 steals and 1.4 blocks per game.

Rookie of the Month: Jerry Dickenman, Seattle Supersonics – 15.9 points, 5.1 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game.

Six games to go and we have sewn up a playoff spot but I’m hoping for the second seed so we don’t play Toronto in the second round.

Whenever Orko shoots 4/20 and Jordan Crawford goes 9/23 the outlook will always been grim. 101-81 to the Thunder grim. Crawford had 28 points but Derrick Rose was held to only 9 points by Russell Westbrook who had 23 points of his own. To make matters worse, Orko strained his hamstring and Dex Floyd sprained his ankle and both will be out for over a week. There must be something in the water here in Detroit that makes our bones and muscles go brittle.

Detroit Pistons 54-23

Dirk Nowitzki turns back the clock for 12 points and 15 rebounds filling in for Dex as we win 111-105 in Utah, giving us a huge boost. Our back court had 43 points and 9 assists combined while Deron Williams was a one man wrecking crew with 22 points and 18 assists with DeMar DeRozan chipping in with 24 points. DeMar is averaging 13.5 points a game for the Jazz while starting all but eight games.

Detroit Pistons 55-23

I’m so glad I signed Derrick Rose. Sure the contract was probably too big but when he goes off for 37 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists and nearly single handedly dragging us to a 31-11 last quarter blitz as we won 96-80 over Minnesota. Evan Turner has torn his ACL and when Ricky Rubio is top scoring with 17 pionts they are in trouble. It’s exactly when Dex Floyd top scores for us, it’s not his job and we are worse for it.

Detroit Pistons 56-23

It’s a great 110-103 over a very good Washington team as Jason Beck does something for once with 25 points and 12 rebounds while Orko is healthy again and had 20 points. Dex Floyd and Derrick Rose double up while Omer Asik was the best for the Wizards again with 23 points, 11 rebounds and 6 blocks but they are really missing Rashid Shiran.

Detroit Pistons 57-23

Phoenix are fighting for their playoff lives and with their dynamic back court anything could happen. Including a 117-110 Detroit win with Orko top scoring with 24 points with five other Pistons in double figures. It’s strange that we shot 53% from the field but we 0/9 from the three point line. Marlon Zinn had 27 points with Nikolos Bocharkov had 26 points but we just outshot them and outscored them.

Detroit Pistons 58-23

It’s our last game of the season, if we win it will be five games in a row and if we win it will be a 40 win improvement over last year. And we do just that with a 115-108 win over Boston with Derrick Rose shooting 28 free throws, more than that whole Celtic team, hitting 18 of them on his way to 36 points and 8 assists. Jeff Brown torched the Celtics as well with 15 points in only 20 minutes. Chris Bosh had his way with Jason Beck for 32 points and 14 rebounds while Jules Riley had 27 points.

Detroit Pistons 59-23

Let’s go to the standings –

Eastern Conference:

1st – Toronto Raptors – 63-19 (.768)
2nd – Detroit Pistons – 59-23 (.720)
3rd – New York Knicks – 58-24 (.707)
4th – Philadelphia 76ers – 54-28 (.659)
5th – Memphis Grizzlies – 54-28 (.659)
6th – Washington Wizards – 51-31 (.622)
7th – Boston Celtics – 48-34 (.585)
8th – New Jersey Nets – 41-41 (.500)
Last – Cleveland Cavaliers – 18-64 (.220)

Unfortunate for the Pacers as they were also on 41-41 but were left out of the dance because of win-loss. The East is still packed with six teams over 50 wins which is what the 90s must have felt like for the West when they were the best conference by far.

Western Conference:

1st – Los Angeles Lakers – 54-28 (.659)
2nd – Los Angeles Clippers – 50-32 (.610)
3rd – Portland Trailblazers – 50-32 (.610)
4th – Dallas Mavericks – 49-33 (.598)
5th – Minnesota Timberwolves – 48-24 (.585)
6th – Oklahoma City Thunder – 45-37 (.549)
7th – Phoenix Suns – 41-41 (.500)
8th – Golden State Warriors – 40-42 (.488)
Last – Seattle Supersonics – 8-74 (.098)

There you have it readers, the 2016-2017 Seattle Supersonics are the worst team in the history of the NBA. Another historic moment, I’m almost certain this is the first time both Los Angeles team have been 1-2 on the standings at the end of the season but I may be wrong.

Detroit Top Points – Derrick Rose (20.5), Jordan Crawford (18.2), Osmo Koslewski (14.3), Jason Beck (14.2)
Detroit Top Rebounds – Dex Floyd (10.2), Jason Beck (8.5), Ekpe Udoh (5.1), Osmo Koslewski (4.6)
Detroit Top Assists – Derrick Rose (8.4), Jordan Crawford (3.1), Ty Lawson (2.7), AJ Price (2.1)

On the Toronto team, Kevin King has a torn MCL and will be out for nearly a year and Zach Randolph has a broken hand and will be out for over a month. Tough times up north but they are still the favourites with Reggie Williams starting at SF and Randolph was coming off the bench. Tim Duncan is one shrewd general manager.

Toronto Top Points – Kevin King (23.2), Tim Mozgov (15.3), Trent Bailey (14.7), Dwight Howard (14.0)
Toronto Top Rebounds – Tim Mozgov (10.0), Dwight Howard (8.2), Zach Randolph (6.6), Kevin King (4.4)
Toronto Top Assists – Rajon Rondo (9.3), Kenny Costa (3.8), Trent Bailey (3.7), Kirk Hinrich (3.3)

League Top Points – Kevin Durant OKC (24.5), Lebron James DAL (24.2), Monta Ellis GSW (23.3), Kevin King TOR (23.2)
League Top Rebounds – Travis Randolph NEV (11.2), Blake Griffin ORL (11.1), Marc Gasol MEM (10.8), Kevin Love MIN (10.5)
League Top Assists – Deron Williams UTA (11.1), Chris Paul PHI (10.5), Rajon Rondo TOR (9.3), Vlasi Kazapov LAC (9.0)
League Top Blocks – Justin Cabrera CHI (4.8), Travis Randolph NEV (4.4), Mike Ohnstad LAC (4.0), Derrick Favors NJN (3.6)
League Top Steals – Andre Iguodala LAL (2.2), Sam Dye PHO (2.0), Monta Ellis GSW (2.0), Raymond Felton NYK (1.9)
League Top Turnovers – Dwayne Wade MIA (5.0), Vlasi Kazapov LAC (4.4), Russell Westbrook OKC (4.1), Tyreke Evans SAC (4.1)

Rookie Top Points – Osmo Koslewski DET (14.3), Jerry Dickenman SEA (13.2), Lawrence McSwain CHA (11.9), Kyle Wallace MIN (11.5)
Rookie Top Rebounds – Ashley Mosley MIL (9.2), Jarvis Collier PHO (8.0), Alan Slocum SEA (6.9), Rob Penders HON (6.5)
Rookie Top Assists – Ron Nelson SAS (6.1), Tahric Tahid DAL (4.1), Jerry Dickenman SEA (4.0), Kyle Wallace MIN (3.7)

We have a new problem child in Jarvis Collier, who is worse than Travis Randolph and Justin Cabrera if you can believe it. Look for him to be traded many, many times.

2017 NBA Playoffs

Eastern Conference:
#1 Toronto vs. #8 New Jersey
#2 Detroit vs. #7 Boston
#3 New York vs. #6 Washington
#4 Philadelphia vs. #5 Memphis

Western Conference:
#1 Los Angeles Lakers vs. #8 Golden State
#2 Los Angeles Clippers vs. #7 Phoenix
#3 Portland vs. #6 Oklahoma City
#4 Dallas vs. #5 Minnesota

We won the regular season series 3-1 against the Celtics and I really don’t want to lose to Boston.

2017 NBA Playoffs First Round Boston vs. Detroit

Point Guard
Tony Rein vs. Derrick Rose
13.9 points, 2.9 rebounds, 5.9 assists vs. 20.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, 8.4 assists

Rose has been a revelation in Detroit as his play and leadership has rejuvenated the Pistons and when he went down with injury the team suffered. It won’t be as easy for Rose as Rein is an outstanding defender and will push the tempo at any opportunity.

Winner - Detroit

Shooting Guard
Jules Riley vs. Jordan Crawford
15.2 points, 3.4 rebounds, 4.0 rebounds vs. 18.2 points, 3.0 rebounds and 3.1 assists

It’s the battle of the undersized two guards as Riley is a 167lb PG while Crawford is only 6’4. The only difference is that Crawford is suited to this position and racks up points like it’s going out of fashion. Riley is good but most of the league thinks that he would do better as the dominant PG on a team.

Winner - Detroit

Small Forward
Jim Seymour vs. Osmo Koslewski
10.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists vs. 14.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.8 assists

Since coming into the league three years ago, Seymour has started every game he has played in. However, he doesn’t have that many skills apart from his above average rebounding. Koslewski, or Orko to his friends, has drawn comparisons to a young Kevin King in his scoring ability which is a lot of pressure to put on a 19 year old Polish kid who doesn’t know much English.

Winner - Detroit

Power Forward
Chris Bosh vs. Jason Beck
19.9 points, 9.4 rebounds, 2.2 assists vs. 14.2 points, 8.4 rebounds, 1.8 assists

As Rose was a turning point for Detroit, so was Bosh for the Celtics. With such a young team like Boston having a player like Bosh to bring in the points in the clutch is something that this team has missed since Paul Pierce.

Winner - Boston

Centre
Andrea Bargnani vs. Dexter Floyd
13.4 points, 8.7 rebounds, 2.1 assists vs. 7.7 points, 10.2 rebounds, 1.5 assists
It’s pure offence versus pure defence as Bargnani can light it up from all over the court, his defense is porous at best. On the other hand Floyd gets most of his points off putbacks and dunks but is a dynamite scorer. Whoever can win this battle might well win the series.

Winner - Draw

Bench
Alan Green, Derrick Chambless, Darren Collison vs. Ekpe Udoh, Dirk Nowitzki, Chucky Durden

Even though the Pistons have great big man depth, their back court subs aren’t as good as Boston’s, with Alan Green and Darren Collison starting quality players.

Winner – Draw

Prediction – Detroit in 5

In game one of our series, Chris Bosh puts up 21 points and 18 rebounds but the rest of the Celtics go 19/70 as we wallop them 101-77 as Jordan Crawford takes adavantage of Jules Riley with 28 points, 8 assists and 5 rebounds. Derrick Rose shoots 9/11 for 24 points and 8 assists while Orko has 24 points of his own.

Detroit leads 1-0

In almost an identical game as game 1, we hold the Celtics to an abysmal 33% shooting for a 101-76 win. Orko top scores for us this time with22 points and 7 rebounds while Derrick Rose has 18 points and 10 assists and Jordan Crawford 11 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists. Andrea Bargnani was the best of a bad bunch for Boston with 15 points and 16 rebounds but in two games they haven’t topped 80 points. Piston Crush ACTIVATES!

Detroit leads 2-0

I knew going into Boston would be scary after all the bad words I have used to describe them, and the crowd gave us lot room to operate. They booed us EVERYTIME we touched the ball but that didn’t stop us from pounding them into the ground with a 107-87 win. Orko again stood up with 26 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists while our backcourt combined for 49 points, 18 assists and 6 rebounds. For the Celtics, Jules Riley had 28 points but Jim Seymour is virtually nonexistent in this series, averaging 6 points a game on 30% shooting.

Detroit leads 3-0

It’s all on the line for Boston, one win and they go home to a town that hates losing. Luckily for them Jim Seymour decided to turn up, scoring 24 points in their 110-100 win. Jules Riley had 25 points and 6 assists as they lead all the way. Our backcourt had 42 points but took 38 shots to get them. One win doesn’t matter, but I don’t want to make a habit of losing.

Detroit leads 3-1

There has been no sweeps so far, but the Toronto/New Jersey series is tied up at 2-2 which is surprising.

Going back to Detroit I want this to be over and look forward to the next round, and Derrick Rose had the same idea. Our leader had 31 points and 9 assists in our 111-94 series clinching win. Dirk Nowitzki had 16 points in 19 minutes and Jordan Crawford lent a hand with 21 points, 6 assists and 5 steals. Chris Bosh shot 8/20 for 24 points, 13 rebounds and a massive 8 turnovers. Andrea Bargnani was also decent with 21 points and 11 rebounds but the Celtics were 38% from the field.

Onto the next round!

Detroit wins series 4-1

In the west the #1 Lakers took care of #8 Golden State 4-1, while #4 Dallas and #3 Portland eliminated #5 Minnesota and #6 Oklahoma City.

The next day #4 Philadelphia wiped out #5 Memphis while #7 Phoenix upset the #2 Clippers which sent half of Los Angeles into a deep depression.

The series that went the distance were surprising; with Toronto/New Jersey and New York/Washington being decided in game seven.

Toronto smash New Jersey 128-87 behind Dwight Howard’s 30 points and 17 rebounds but New York needed overtime to get past Washington as Varlam Bebutov and Raymond Felton combine for 66 points, 17 assists and 11 rebounds in their 113-106 win.

2017 NBA Playoffs

Eastern Conference:
#1 Toronto vs. #4 Philadelphia
#2 Detroit vs. #3 New York

Western Conference:
#1 Los Angeles Lakers vs. #4 Dallas
#3 Portland vs. #7 Phoenix

It has been a while since my team has lost a season series but we lost 3-1 against New York and the Knicks are looking really good.

2017 NBA Playoffs Second Round New York vs. Detroit

Point Guard
Varlam Bebutov vs. Derrick Rose
22.9 points, 5.3 rebounds, 7.3 assists vs. 23.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, 8.6 assists

Rose is the heart and soul of the Pistons and will need to bring his A game for the Pistons to continue. Unfortunately for him, Bebutov has become arguably the best point guard in the league as he can do everything from score to facilitate to rebound and defend.

Winner – New York

Shooting Guard
Raymond Felton vs. Jordan Crawford
19.1 points 4.4 rebounds, 5.4 assists vs. 21.0 points, 4.6 rebounds, 6.2 assists

If it was up to most GMs Felton would be a starting PG and not playing out of position at SG. Crawford played very, very well against a PG playing SG in Jules Riley and will probably do the same here.

Winner - Detroit

Small Forward
Danilo Gallinari vs. Osmo Koslewski
21.6 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.1 assists vs. 19.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists

It’s the battle of the Euro SFs with Gallinari becoming a lethal three point shooter and spreading the floor for their two star guards. And even though Orko is a 19 year old rookie he is capable of scoring in bunches.

Winner – New York

Power Forward
Marlon Sanden vs. Jason Beck
7.7 points, 8.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists vs. 9.6 points, 8.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists

Even though Beck has been disappointing he is a superior player to Sanden and the New York PF is an atrocious defender, so look for the Pistons to pound the ball into Beck all series long.

Winner – Detroit

Centre
Kelvin Rivers vs. Dexter Floyd
7.0 points, 11.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists vs. 5.2 points, 8.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists

Rivers has a point to prove as he was drafted by the Pistons but unceremoniously dumped when he wouldn’t get along with others. Both he and Floyd are bereft of offensive talents but can rebound and defender with the best of them.

Winner - Both

Bench
Anthony Randolph, Arron Afflalo, Corey Brewer vs. Ekpe Udoh, Dirk Nowitzki, Chucky Durden

Randolph never lived up to his early hype but has become a quality bench player while Afflalo and Brewer are below average at best while the Pistons bench has depth all down the chart.

Winner – Detroit

Prediction – Detroit in 7.

If you were to say that we would shoot 39% from the field and only lost by 7 I would have taken that. But unfortunately its much worse when its when we lose home court advantage in the Eastern Conference Semi Finals 113-105. Raymond Felton was the best for the Knicks with 27 points while Marlon Sanden told the critics to ‘Suck it’ on his way to 20 points and 12 rebounds. Derrick Rose tried his hardest with 33 points and 9 assists and Dex Floyd had 20 rebounds but we shot horribly and its going to be hard to get this series back and we HAVE to win the next game to stand a chance.

New York leads 1-0

The crowd at the Palace was on edge for our next game, and luckily for us we had a scorcher winning 107-99 as Jason Beck made up for his poor performance last game with 23 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks while Derrick Rose had 21 points and Ty Lawson torched the Knicks bench with 14 points in only 16 minutes. Raymond Felton was again their top scorer with 23 points while Danilo Gallinari was held to only 15 points. We got this one back but I will sleep easier if we win one in the Big Apple.

Series tied 1-1

Derrick Rose had 27 points and 11 assists, Dex Floyd had 16 points, 21 rebounds and 8 blocks and the Detroit Pistons win in overtime 124-118 to take back home court advantage. Raymond Felton had 28 points and Danilo Gallinari broke free of Orko with 27 points but it’s good news for Detroit.

Detroit leads 2-1

Or so it seems. The doctor came to see me after the game and told me the reason Derrick Rose came off the court at the end of the game wasn’t because he got conked in the nose and was bleeding, it was because he tore his MCL and will be out for a very long time. I believe we can push the Knicks without him but I’m very sceptical that we can win this series without him. Ty Lawson has been moved into the starting line-up.

How about that. Without our leader we only go down 99-95 as Jason Beck had 18 points and Dex Floyd flirted with a triple double with 6 points, 21 rebounds and 9 blocks but the intensity of this series has been sucked out and I’m feeling awfully hollow. Varlam Bebutov had 30 points and was helped by Danilo Gallinari helped with 24 points. Eurgh.

Series tied 2-2

No sweeps yet, with Toronto/Philadelphia tied at 2-2 and both top seeds in the West holding a 3-1 series lead.

In one of the funniest and kindest moves by a crowd yet, our Pistons mob were all dressed in black for the ‘passing’ of Derrick Rose, and our team fight valiantly only to go down 114-111 as Jordan Crawford took over the slack with 29 points while Ty Lawson had 14 points and 9 assists in place of Rose. Danilo Gallinari had 22 points while Kelvin Rivers had 20 rebounds. I’m over this series.

New York leads 3-2

#1 Los Angeles Lakers win their series 4-1 to move onto the Western Conference Finals and the other series continue.

And there it is a 129-110 loss which cuts our season short. Raymond Felton had 29 points and 7 rebounds while Danilo Gallinari top scored with 34 points while Jordan Crawford had 35 points on our side. Orko had 18 points but we are all looking forward to what next season brings.

New York wins series 4-2

Toronto wins 4-2 while Portland upends Phoenix in seven games. In the Conference Finals Portland causes the upset by sweeping the Lakers and Toronto again making it to the Finals again with a 4-2 series win over New York.

2017 NBA Finals

Toronto vs. Portland

Point Guard
Rajon Rondo vs. Mike Conley
10.4 points, 3.6 rebounds, 10.7 assists vs. 10.3 points, 1.8 rebounds, 6.0 assists

The captain of the two time defending champions is doing what he usually does, get good looks for his teammates. He has never been a good scorer but with the firepower on this team he doesn’t need to be. Conley on the other hand is a decent point guard but Rondo is an elite defender which will make Conley’s job extremely hard.

Winner - Toronto

Shooting Guard
Trent Bailey vs. Brandon Roy
20.9 points, 3.7 rebounds, 5.3 assists vs. 18.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, 6.1 assists

It’s the battle of the young versus the old. When Trent Bailey was drafted he was compared to Brandon Roy for his ability to do everything on the court but he isn’t at Roy’s level just yet.

Winner - Portland

Small Forward
Reggie Williams vs. Paul George
17.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.3 assists vs. 17.6 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.1 assists

Your leading scoring has gone down for the season, don’t worry because your second best SF averages nearly 18 points in his place. That is the depth of the Raptor team. George is long at 6’9 and has the quickness to hassle Williams all series.

Winner - Draw

Power Forward
Tim Mozgov vs. Chris Kaman
18.7 points, 9.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists vs. 12.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, 1.4 assists

One of the few teams in the league that has the height to match Toronto but unfortunately for the Blazers they just don’t have the talent. The big Russian was named to the All Star team last season and when Dwight Howard went down injured Mozgov stepped up his game to another level.

Winner - Toronto

Centre
Dwight Howard vs. Greg Oden
19.2 points, 13.5 rebounds, 1.3 assists vs. 16.3 points, 10.4 rebounds, 0.8 assists

And then we get to Dwight Howard. Three time league MVP, has won the last six Defensive Player of the Year awards, six times All NBA 1st team and six time All Defence 1st team. Those accolades tell a tale more than one reporter can. While Greg Oden is a great defensive talent he is no Superman.

Winner - Toronto

Bench
Zach Randolph, Kenny Costa, Roy Michaels vs. Joel Przybilla, George-Marie Gauthier, Willie Warren

Do you want to know just how good the Toronto depth is? They have Zach Randolph who on any other team would be averaging a double double. They have this year’s #1 overall draft pick in Roy Michaels and they are doing it all without their best player in Kevin King who is out injured.

Winner – Toronto

Prediction – Toronto in 4

Game One @Toronto
Portland 91 Toronto 117
Player of the Game – Dwight Howard – 27 points, 19 rebounds and 4 blocks

Game Two @Toronto
Portland 101 Toronto 112
Player of the Game – Tim Mozgov – 29 points, 15 rebounds and 3 blocks

Game Three @Portland
Toronto 102 Portland 93
Player of the Game – Tim Mozgov – 20 points, 12 rebounds and 6 blocks

Game Four @Portland
Toronto 117 Portland 97
Player of the Game – Dwight Howard – 25 points, 19 rebounds, 2 blocks

Well there you go a three-peat for the Toronto Raptors. It was pretty much a formality as they are the best team in the league by far and if they can resign Dwight Howard (even if they can’t) they will be the overwhelming favourites to win again next season.

2017 NBA Lottery –

16 – Indiana (0)
15 – Miami (0)
14 – Sacramento (0)
13 – Houston (0)
12 – Milwaukee (0)
11 – San Antonio (0)
10 – Philadelphia (0)
9 – Denver (0)
8 – Philadelphia (0)
7 – Utah (0)
6 – San Antonio (0)
5 – Honolulu (0)
4 – Charlotte (0)
3 – Cleveland (-1)

Finally, some movement.

2 – Seattle (-1)
1 –Denver (+2)

Its award time and Orko has a real shot at winning ROY, but I don’t think anyone else is in the running with all our injuries.

Most Valuable Player:
Chris Paul, Philadelphia 76ers – 17.7 points, 10.5 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 1.7 steals

Defensive Player of the Year:
Justin Cabrera, Chicago Bulls – 9.6 points, 1.6 assists, 10.0 rebounds, 0.9 steals and 4.8 blocks

Sixth Man of the Year:
Andray Blatche, Houston Rockets – 10.5 points, 1.7 assists, 6.1 rebounds, 1.0 steals and 0.9 blocks

Rookie of the Year:
Ashley Mosley, Milwaukee Bucks – 7.6 points, 1.6 assists, 9.2 rebounds, 0.9 steals and 2.9 blocks

Coach of the Year:
Mike D’Antoni, New York Knicks – 58-24 (.707)

It’s the first time Dwight Howard has not won the DPoY award as Cabrera was a shot blocking machine. I’m not sure about Mosley over Orko or even D’Anoni over Mike Woodson but I think that is my bias coming out.

All NBA First Team:
Chris Paul, Philadelphia 76ers
Dwayne Wade, Miami Heat
Lebron James, Dallas Mavericks
Chris Bosh, Boston Celtics
Marc Gasol, Memphis Grizzlies

Funny to see the ex-Three Kings make it to the first team now they have split up.

All NBA Second Team:
Deron Williams, Utah Jazz
Tyreke Evans, Sacramento Kings
Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City Thunder
Kevin Love, Minnesota Timberwolves
Tim Mozgov, Toronto Raptors

I send Tim a congratulatory text as he has always had this talent in him but being the great team guy that he is he always deferred to his teammates. Great job to him.

All NBA Third Team:
Varlam Bebutov, New York Knicks
Monta Ellis, Golden State Warriors
Wesley Johnson, Philadelphia 76ers
David Lee, Golden State Warriors
Matt Bailey, Los Angeles Lakers

All Defence First Team:
Chris Paul, Philadelphia 76ers
Dwayne Wade, Miami Heat
Wesley Johnson, Philadelphia 76ers
Gelnn Harris, Indiana Pacers
Justin Cabrera, Chicago Bulls

All Defence Second Team:
Varlam Bebutov, New York Knicks
Tyreke Evans, Sacramento Kings
Andre Iguodala, Los Angeles Lakers
Derrick Favors, New Jersey Nets
Andrew Bogut, Los Angeles Clippers

All Rookie First Team:
Kyle Wallace, Minnesota Timberwolves
Tahric Tahid, Dallas Mavericks
Osmo Koslewski, Detroit Pistons
Rob Penders, Honolulu Sharks
Ashley Mosley, Milwaukee Bucks

All Rookie Second Team:
Lawrence McSwain, Charlotte Bobcats
Albert Wampler, Orlando Magic
Nick Wise, New Orleans Hornets
Roy Michaels, Toronto Raptors
Jarvis Collier, Phoenix Suns

Rob Penders is the first award winner for the Honolulu Sharks and I think that putting Michaels in the second team has more to do with him being the first overall pick than his play.

Mr McCreight rings me the next day and nearly made me deaf.
“I knew you were good but to turn a 19 win team into a 59 win team was unbelievable! Do you know how many more season ticket holders we got compared to last year? HEAPS! There are people pre-ordering their season tickets already because they know we will make the playoffs.”

He really doesn’t care about winning; he just wants the money that goes along with it.

“So next year, we will make the playoffs, right?” He asks.
“With this team and no injuries, absolutely.” I tell him.
“Good, and money wise?” He slips in quietly. I don’t like how money is always on his mind.
“No more than $10-15 million over the cap.” I say coolly. I want to see his reaction to see how much I can play with.
“Hmm, try and keep it to the lower end of that scale and I’m alright with it.”

Good times.

“I will try my best.” I say before hanging up the phone.

The consensus mock draft comes out and if a team wants a SF or PF then this is the draft to do it. We don’t have a pick in either rounds and I’m not really interested in anyone in particular so I will be keeping out of it unless a good deal comes around.

2017 Mock Draft

1 – Denver – PG Sam Baron
2 – Seattle – SF Quadree Johnson
3 – Cleveland – PG Danny Gilmore
4 – Charlotte – SG Sapir Ruffin
5 – Honolulu – PF Matt Landram
6 – San Antonio – SF Nate Morris
7 – Utah – PF Damon Alexander
8 – Philadelphia – C Kenny Leith
9 – Denver – PF Jarrett Omara
10 – Philadelphia – SG Luther Marquis
11 – San Antonio – PF Darrell Hoiberg
12 – Milwaukee – SF Jon Pinckney
13 – Houston – SF BJ Hope
14 – Sacramento – PF Mike Garner
15 – Miami – PG Jeremy Dixon
16 – Indiana – SF Marcus Strong

No way Johnson goes #2 and I’m surprised to see Omara and Alexander so low. Jeremy Dixon shouldn't fall to #15 but Miami would be very grateful if he does.

2017 NBA Draft

In my opinion, this draft consists of Jarrett Omara and then everyone else. By the looks of it he is a great defender and scorer already and would go #1 if I was picking. The rest of the pack seems good, but there is no-one else that stands out as a bonafide superstar.

1 – Denver – PF Jarrett Omara
Correct pick I think and he will get plenty of playing time for the Nugs.

2 – Seattle – PF Damon Alexander
The critics like it and so do I but unfortunately he is a bit lazy which might cause the Sonics grief.

I go shopping to see if I can get rid of Jason Beck. I nearly have a deal in place that would have sent Beck and Jeff Brown to Toronto for last season’s first pick Roy Michaels but they decided that if I was dealing with them then they would be getting the short end of the stick and nixed it. I did find someone though –

Detroit trades:
PF Jason Beck

Minnesota trades:
SG Evan Turner

Why for Detroit:
Both coach Mike Woodson and GM Felix Elwood was sick of Jason Beck not living up to his monstrous contract and they wanted him gone. So in comes two-time All NBA Second Team Evan Turner who has a torn Achilles and will be out for around five months. He will look good next to Derrick Rose as they sit in their suits.

Why for Minnesota:
They don’t have a true Centre on the team and even though Beck isn’t a C he does have the size to be one, which shifts Kevin Love to his natural PF position.

Winner – Detroit
On paper it looks like a tie but now the Pistons don’t have to give Jordan Crawford the massive contract he has been asking for. And at 6’7 they have a big back court, as Rose is a large 6’4.

I’m happy with that trade but it means I will have to hold onto Jeff Brown as he is now our best SG until Turner comes back.

3 – Cleveland – PG Sam Baron
If you can think of strength of a point guard, Baron has it. Great vision, hustling defense, fantastic leader but the experts were split. Some were siding with me and other hated this pick and thought Baron’s teammate Nixon should have gone first.

4 – Charlotte – SF Nate Morris
This guy was not talked about much until the combine where he set the court on fire. 6’9 burly guy that could have been picked lower but it’s not much of a stretch.

5 – Honolulu – SG Sapir Ruffin
Is not the best shooter, needs to learn the game more and is only 6’2 but he will have loads of time in Hawaii to tweak his game and it should pay off big in the end.

6 – San Antonio – PF Donte Hampton
A reach for me, he is a great rebounder and has all the tools to become a lockdown defender but there were some better prospects than this guy.

7 – Utah – PF Matt Landram
This guy is RAW. Like cut meat off a cow and put it on a plate raw. He is an elite athlete and has good hands but this is a big risk/bigger reward type of pick that a brave GM makes, so I applaud Utah.

8 – Philadelphia – C Kenny Leith
Needs a C in a bad way and Leith fits the bill. He isn’t very strong and will get pushed around and is lazy but he is the best C in a terrible C crop.

9 – Denver – PG Jeremy Dixon
The Nuggets have been given an A+ for this draft as they pick up two excellent players at their slots. Dixon will rival Baron in a few years if he can keep his head.

10 – Philadelphia – PF Paul McClain
Is a decent rebounder but doesn’t have the best hands. A bit too early to select McClain here as he needs to learn to cut down turnovers.

11 – San Antonio – SF BJ Hope
A very tall SF (6’10) who is rail thin. Is a decent shooter, even out to 3 point range but can put the ball on the floor and drive hard at the rim. Decent selection.

12 – Milwaukee – SG Luther Marquis
Very good shooter and shoots it quickly. Definitely an offense player first and foremost which will hurt him later on.

There are still some good players on the board like Mike Garner, Quadree Johnson, Jon Pinckney and Darrell Hoiberg and yes they are all forwards.

13 – Houston – PF Darrell Hoiberg
Only 222lbs for a 6’10 PF but has muscle and a long wing span. A great pick by the Rockets as he could have gone higher.

14 – Sacramento – PF Mike Garner
Is not as good as advertised with his athleticism being called into question but for pick 14 its a very good selection.

15 – Miami – PG Colin Broderick
A great passer and has a decent mid range shot but the Heat needed a PG and they were upset that Dixon didn’t fall to them.

16 – Indiana – PG Danny Gilmore
The PG that Miami should have taken, Gilmore slipped because he wasn’t that good of a shooter but he is a ball thief but gambles too much to be called a good defender.

17 – Golden State – PF Emmanuel Card
Good rebounder but is still raw. I thought that if the Warriors were going for an upside player they would have gone with Quadree Johnson. Card is a good pick but with All NBA David Lee sucking up all the PF minutes Card isn’t going to get much experience.

18 – Cleveland – SF Quadree Johnson
They Cavs are rebuilding and having one of the best SF in the league in Carmelo Anthony mentoring Johnson he will get better in leaps and bounds. Probably won’t see any minutes this year as he is rawer than Matt Landram.

19 – Denver – PG Kwame Armstrong
Small PG who is a great passer. Very unself and wants what is best for the team, which is exactly what every team wants. Not the best pick though and would probably been available 5-10 pick lower.

20 – Oklahoma City – SG Clay Watkins
After trading away Jordan Crawford and realising Skapasky or whatever wasn’t cutting they went for another SG. Too bad this guy should not have been selected in the first round and is just a wasted pick.

21 – Minnesota – SF Jon Pinckney
Very, very good selection here and will bolster the Timberwolves bench. Won’t make a difference straight away but if they stick with him he is a steal in the making.

22 – New Jersey – SG Roger Adams
Six food eight monster of a two guard who can single handedly win games for a team or go 0/12 and lose everything. Not the best pick at this stage.

23 – Dallas – PG Al Jackson
Shortened his name to Al so people wouldn’t confuse him with country singer Alan Jackson; he is a steal at this point in the draft.

24 – Los Angeles Clippers – PF Steve Stapleton
He finally goes as he should have been picked 10 slots before. The Clips should be celebrating as he has been tabbed a poor man’s Blake Griffin.

25 – Portland – PF Grant White
Slipped a little because of his slow foot speed and has polarised the critics. Some say a small steal, other say he was too high.

26 – Washington – SF Marcus Strong
Not the best shooter or ball handler but with John Wall on the team it won’t be as bad. Good driver of the ball and is a decent rebounder.

27 – Milwaukee – PG Tyler Moore
Only 5’11 and at this stage it’s a decent selection but after his rookie contract his up it will be hard for him to get another.

28 – Utah – C Eryon Evans
A big stiff, he has slow feet but is a great rebounder and shooter. A good pick for someone that will help fill the void of Nikola Pekovic.

29 – Philadelphia – PG Glenn Marlow
Was a bench player for Davidson, which should give you all the information that is needed. One his scouting report the best thing was that he was a good free throw shooter.

30 – New York – SG Yitzhak Taikos
Going for a young, tall Latvian that they can stash overseas to see if he pans out is a good strategy as the Knicks backcourt is stacked.

31 – Milwaukee – SF Chad Clarke
I like this pick only because he name is Chad, which makes me laugh for some reason. He is a good player and a good pick here and at 6’9 will help the Bucks’ SF stocks.

32 – Toronto – PG Brian Harris
A bit of a nothing selection as Harris is plainly not NBA quality. Not a good selection to be giving a guaranteed contract to.

There were a lot of nothing trades which I won’t go over, but there was one doozy of a trade during the draft.

Los Angeles Lakers trades:
PG Mills Watkins

Sacramento trades:
SG Lloyd Grundman

Why for the Lakers:
Watkins was a good player but he was always injured. I mean always. In his stead they pick up versatile Grundman who at 6’6 can still man the PG position so he will boost the Lakers guard stocks immediately.

Why for Sacramento:
The Kings only had rookie Nick Babul with PG skills so getting rid of a player that wasn’t getting much court time backing up Tyreke Evans for a much needed back-up for the inconsistent Babul was key.

Winner – Sacramento
Watkins probably has the edge over Grundman for talent and is needed more for the Kings than Grundman is for the Lakers.

Sacramento trades:
SG Demond Neeser

Toronto trades:
PG Kenny Costa

Why for Sacramento:
With Grundman gone wanted to clean out their SG bench so they got rid of the intriguing Neeser for three time champion Kenny Costa. A steal at pick 24 three years ago, Costa has become a very good player and will give experience to Nick Babul, even though he is only 23 years old.

Why for Toronto:
Even though Trent Bailey played well at PG when Rajon Rondo was injured, he is still in the starting line up and they traded away their best bench PG. They also drafted bust Brian Harris in the first round which makes it two mistakes in a row for GM Tim Duncan.

Winner – Sacramento
Kenny Costa will do wonders with Nick Babul while the Raptors need some more PG depth if they want to get a fourth consecutive championship.

New Jersey trades:
SF Danny Granger

Denver trades:
SF Jonas Jerebko

Why for New Jersey:
They are trying to save money and this trade saves them $4 million right off the bat. Both players are expiring but every dollar counts when you are so close to the luxury tax.

Why for Denver:
Although Granger is 34 years old he can still fill it up as he averaged 19.9 points a game last season. This trade gives them loads of flexibility with their scoring load as they have a big time scorer on their team at last.

Winner – Denver
Getting a player like Granger for not much, and not taking a long contract is a great deal in my book.

Let's hope Denver's coaches have decent skills to help players develop. It would be a shame to have two promising youngsters end up as regular mediocre players.

Omara looks fantastic already and is starting from day one while Dixon is the first guard off the bench. George Karl is still coaching the Nugs and he is only average at player development but their third assistant Tim Grgurich is very good.

I renounce Chucky Durden and bench warmer Dusty Faust as they won’t have a place on the team with Colin Horvath hopefully stepping up but the biggest heartbreak was renouncing Jordan Crawford. With the acquisition of Evan Turner I won’t be able to pay both of them and Turner is taller and more talented. I keep Ekpe Udoh though because if I can’t find a suitable starting PF I’m more than happy for him to start.

The Summer League season has come around again with Jeff Brown, Orko, Cedric Fields, Colin Horvath and Dexter Floyd being invited.

Our first game is a 103-83 loss to New Jersey with Joshua Potter going nuts for 32 points and 11 rebounds on the Nets while Jeff Brown and Orko top scoring for us with 20 points. Dex Floyd went 0/8 from the field but had 15 rebounds.

It’s a double header as Honolulu and San Antonio both coming to Detroit on the same day, and we won both games. In our game against the Sharks which we won 98-65, Orko top scored with 22 points while Dex Floyd had 13 points, 11 rebounds and 6 blocks with Colin Horvath backing him up with 7 points, 10 rebounds and 6 blocks. In our 92-87 win against the Spurs, Orko had 20 points and 10 rebounds while Dex Floyd showed his scoring skills with 16 points and 17 rebounds.

[That’s right the Pistons played two games on the same day which must be something to do with the expansion of the league.]

We win again, this time 100-92 against Seattle with Orko again showing why he was tabbed as the #1 pick in his draft with 26 points while Brian Lawrence and Eugene Williams had 11 and 10 points respectively. Second overall pick Damon Alexander had 18 points but took 19 shots to get them.

What a surprise! Orko top scored for us again in our 101-92 win over Phoenix. Orko had 22 points and 8 rebounds while Eugene Williams was a star off the bench with 15 points.

In our last game of the summer league we stomp all over the Trailblazers 91-76 with Orko having 25 points and Dex Floyd 12 points and 13 rebounds. As you can probably tell Portland didn’t have any standouts.

Free Agency

Although this year’s crop isn’t as good as last seasons, there is great depth which will help us out in finding a starting PF with the mid level exception.

Best free agents –
PG Marlon Zinn
PG Sam Dye
SF Carmelo Anthony
PF Andrew Reed
C Dwight Howard
PF Josh Smith
C Marc Gasol
PG Tony Rein
PG Deron Williams
C Justin Cabrera

I have narrowed my search for a PF to Nikolos Bocharkov, Claudio Carrera, Boroda Beketov and Tiago Splitter while giving Ekpe Udoh a 5 year, $35.7 million contract. It may be overpaying for a bench player but I like him and he seems to like it here.

It seems Ekpe likes money more than Detroit and rejected our offer, but I will get him in the end. I give Tiago Splitter our MLE which would be awesome if he signed.

Finally, someone from the top players list signs, and it’s Sam Dye who puts his pen to paper with Miami to the tune of a 5 year, $71.9 million offer sheet. I’m not sure if Phoenix will match that.

Wow, Phoenix is in trouble as Orlando signs Marlon Zinn to an offer sheet worth $68 million and if the Suns don’t sign then the Magic got a whole lot better with Zinn throwing alleys to Blake Griffin. Chucky Durden gets paid by Minnesota for a 4 year MLE contract while Andrew Reed signs with New Orleans for a 5 year maximum contract.

Bad choice by Phoenix by letting Sam Dye walk to Miami but this means that they will probably re-sign Marlon Zinn who is the better player.

On the 27th of July 2017 it seemed like everyone either re-signed or signed with a team. Here is a brief rundown –

Carmelo Anthony – re-signs with Cleveland
Jamaal McFadden – re-signs with Los Angeles Lakers
Claudio Carrera – accepts tender offer with Memphis (damn)
Boroda Beketov – accepts tender offer with Philadelphia (double damn).

There were 27 players who accepted their team’s tender offers, so next season will be huge.

Marlon Zinn and Andrew Reed sign with Orlando and New Orleans respectively while Nikolos Bocharkov re-signs with Phoenix for around $10 million a year. I’m still waiting on Splitter and Udoh to make their minds up.

Ed Davis gets paid for some reason as he gets a $31 million contract with Memphis and Ekpe Udoh re-signs with us.

Outstanding! Tiago Splitter decided to sign with us for a 5 year MLE. Unfortunately he will be 37 years old when he comes out of contract but I don’t really care about that right now. The two best Cs in the crop, Marc Gasol and Dwight Howard, re-sign with Memphis and Toronto for $10 million and $13 million respectively.

I lose the war for Nicolas Batum to Toronto which angered me, while Philadelphia signed Jordan Crawford for a 4 year MLE which makes them very dangerous, but very small in the back court.

For some reason Josh Smith and Yao Ming sign with us for a two year minimum while Deron Williams makes the Lakers very, very scary by signing for five years.

With 14 players signed and $7.5 million over the salary cap I’m done and I’m so very happy with this team, well until Derrick Rose and Evan Turner get back from injury.

Actually, I lie. I see that the 38 year old Kobe Bryant is still available so I offer him a two year minimum, which he signs.

Preseason training camp comes and goes and Jeff Brown shows more skills but he is still not very happy. Hopefully playing and practicing with Kobe Bryant will get him going in fulfilling his potential. On the other hand, Orko looks LEGIT. He is the real deal and his comparisons with Kevin King are getting closer and closer to the mark which makes me so happy. And on the third hand, Colin Horvath has improved a lot but when he is behind Dex Floyd, Tiago Splitter, Ekpe Udoh, Yao Ming, Josh Smith and Dirk Nowitzki which means he is not even going to be able to sniff the court let alone playing on it so he is assigned to the D-League.

Pre-season Eastern Conference Standings –

1 – Toronto
2 – Philadelphia
3 – Detroit
4 – Memphis
5 – Boston
Last – Miami

The only team in the top five that I have a problem with is Boston as they haven’t changed at all and all the other teams have gotten better, while New York is always being underestimated as they placed at #7 here.

Pre-season Western Conference Standings –

1 – Los Angeles Lakers
2 – Dallas
3 – Sacramento
4 – Minnesota
5 – Oklahoma City
Last - Utah

If the Lakers don’t win the West with a Deron Williams/Rodney Stuckey/Andre Iguodala/LaMarcus Aldridge/Matt Bailey line-up then they should all be fired and have to work in the coal mines.

We start the season with a line-up of –
PG Jeff Brown
SG Kobe Bryant
SF Osmo Koslewski
PF Josh Smith
C Tiago Splitter.

And said line-up gets us beat down to a 118-99 flogging to San Antonio. Adam Lofton had 26 points for the winners while #6 pick Donte Hampton killed Josh Smith for 20 points of his own. On our side Kobe had 27 points and Jeff Brown helped with 18 points and 8 assists but they shot a massive 54% from the field.

Detroit Pistons 0-1

After the game Ekpe Udoh blasts Mike Woodson for only playing 8 minutes as he was assuming that with his fat contract he would get more minutes so I blast him back, which he didn’t like. I’m thinking that with this much frontcourt talent if anyone mouths off too much I will look to trade them. Ekpe, you have been warned.

Another demolition of our team in a 113-82 loss to New York shows how much we rely on Derrick Rose and hopefully Evan Turner. Danilo Gallinari had 26 points while keeping Orko to 5/21 shooting as Kobe Bryant is our top scorer with only 13 points.

Detroit Pistons 0-2

I know it’s super early but we lose again, 101-95 to Oklahoma City as Orko gets manhandled again. This time it was Kevin Durant who had 28 points and 8 rebounds while Russell Westbrook was one rebound away from a triple double with 11 points, 13 assists and 9 rebounds. Orko had 20 points while Jeff Brown shot an efficient 14 points but we are flailing. So much for our stupendous team.

Detroit Pistons 0-3

We finally notch our first win of the season with a 94-84 scramble over Memphis. Tiago Splitter had 25 points and 13 rebounds while Kobe Bryant helped with 17 points. Orko is shooting way too much as he is 27/80 (.338) to start the season. On the losing side both OJ Mayo and Louis Williams top scored with 16 points.

Detroit Pistons 1-3

I take my finger away from the trade trigger with a 113-88 shellacking of Indiana behind eight Pistons in double figures. Orko was the best with 18 points on 17 shots while Evan Turner came back from injury early with 13 points and 7 assists.

Detroit Pistons 2-3

I go looking for a trade and seeing as I can’t trade Josh Smith I find a willing partner to get rid of one of my more annoying players.

Detroit trades:
C Dexter Floyd
2020 1st round pick

Cleveland trades:
2018 1st round pick

Why for Detroit:
The once favourite of GM Felix Elwood, Floyd was starting to grate with his inconsistent play that would see him go missing for games at a time. He was also up for free agency so getting a high pick is a good deal.

Why for Cleveland:
It’s only early but they have fallen into a 1-8 slump to start the season. Getting a good C, the Cavs are hoping that acquiring a player of Floyd’s calibre will get them out of this quagmire.

Winner – Unknown
It will take until the halfway mark of the season to see who wins this trade, but as right now it’s too early to tell.

Our first game since the trade is a big one – Toronto in Toronto. Luckily for us Evan Turner is practically healed and scored 33 points in our 109-100 lashing of the defending champs. Tiago Splitter and Josh Smith contained D&M to only 23 points between them while Reggie Williams top scored with 17 points on 17 shots. They are missing Kevin King dearly who is still three weeks away.

Detroit Pistons 3-3

All that effort in beating Toronto and we back it up with a 89-84 loss to the 1-8 (now 2-8) Bucks. Sebastjan Sbroczynski top scored for them with 20 points and I hope he never does again so I don’t have to type that long name again. On our side, Orko had 21 points and 9 rebounds as we had only three players in double figures.

Detroit Pistons 3-4

We outscore the Nets 38-25 in the final quarter to record a come from behind 110-98 win with Evan Turner having 27 points and Tiago Splitter joining in with 18 points, 10 rebounds and 5 blocks. Derrick Favors was the best for the Nets with 24 points, 7 rebounds and 6 blocks but they have 6’9 PF Joshua Potter starting at SG which is very strange indeed.

Detroit Pistons 4-4

We finally get a winning streak happening with a 119-98 beat down of Denver as Evan Turner was found his stride with this team with 36 points, 9 assists and 6 rebounds while Tiago Splitter lent a helping hand with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Even though Tiago is playing well at C I really want to get a proper centre on the team so he can slid to PF, but I want to trade Josh Smith so it won’t be until he becomes available. The two star rookies on the Nuggets had very different games with Jeremy Dixon gaining the start and played wonderfully for 29 points while Jarrett Omara had a night to forget with only 3 points and 3 rebounds before fouling out.

Detroit Pistons 5-4

Charlotte has raced out to a 7-2 start but we put a stop to that with a 101-90 crushing as it was Evan Turner and Tiago Splitter again being the heroes with 19 pionts, 8 assists for Turner and 12 points, 12 rebounds and 7 blocks for the Brazillian. Jarrett Jack had 23 points on 8 shots for the Bobcats as ex-Piston JJ Hickson only had 10 points in the loss.

Detroit Pistons 6-4

We are getting into our groove with our fourth win in a row, this time a 112-97 thrashing of Portland. Evan Turner had 32 points but it was Orko who stepped up with 25 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Brandon Roy is still playing out of position at PG and it showed. He scored 22 points but turned the ball over a massive 8 times to increase his turnover average to a whopping 4.8 a game.

Detroit Pistons 7-4

I don’t know when the Neon will be good but it’s not tonight as we pummel them 110-86 with Evan Turner again top scoring with 24 points and Josh Smith actually does something with 14 points, 8 assists and 4 blocks. No-one on Nevada’s team played any good so I’m not going to bow down to that level.

Detroit Pistons 8-4

The Magic show how dangerous they are with a 104-83 statement against us. Marlon Zinn has been electric this year and he showed us first hand with 28 points and 11 assists while Blake Griffin had 18 points and 10 rebounds as he is loving not being the main focus. Our top scorer was 15 points by three players but when a team shoots 39% from the field they don’t get to be named.

Detroit Pistons 8-5

Our last game for the month is a laugher against Nevada with the score being 101-84. Tiago Splitter was the best man with 18 points and 17 rebounds while Orko shone with 22 points. Travis Randolph is back for the Neon with 13 points and 12 rebounds but when the rest of the team isn’t up to scratch there is nothing he can do.

Detroit Pistons 9-5

So after a rough start to the season we bounce back to be sitting fourth in the East, with New York on 15-1 and Toronto on 14-1. Cleveland is still last with a 3-13 record which makes me very happy.

In the West it’s the Thunder on top with a 9-3 record, but the Clippers and Sacramento are breathing down their necks. And where are the Lakers you ask? Sitting seventh with a record of 11-8 which is very disappointing.
