March Awards

Player of the Month: Matt Bailey, Los Angeles Lakers – 29.4 points, 12.8 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.3 steals and 4.1 blocks per game.

Rookie of the Month: Ramon Johnson, Phoenix Suns – 7.2 points, 11.1 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 0.6 steals and 4.4 blocks per game.

We are on the home stretch with only six games to go in the regular season so hopefully we can sew up that second seed early.

The run home starts with a 118-95 beatdown of San Antonio as Tiago Splitter, Kevin King and Tyreke Evans all score over 23 points while Nick Babul gets close to a triple double with 12 points, 10 assists and 7 rebounds. Ex-Piston Evan Turner had a decent game with 21 points and 5 assists but shot 8/22 from the field.

Detroit Pistons 58-19

Utah still hasn’t got to 10 wins yet, and we keep it that way with a 116-87 humiliation on their home court with Tiago Splitter winning player of the game again with 22 points and 6 rebounds. The Jazz are horrible beyond compare and yet they have traded away their first round pick for Oti Brown who played all of 17 minutes in this game.

Detroit Pistons 59-19

After a six day break Seattle come to town and we take them down 94-83 as Tyreke Evans has a great all around game with 20 points, 5 assists, 5 rebounds and 5 steals but only one block. The Sonics had five players in double figures but no-one over 15 points.

Detroit Pistons 60-19

With three games to go we have secured the second seed so coach Woodson rolls out a line-up of this –

PG – George Hill
SG – Dwayne Wade
SF – Donte Hampton
PF – Ekpe Udoh
C – Yao Ming

And of course we got smashed, 105-89 to Orlando. Yao Ming was our best with 15 points and 12 rebounds while Dwayne Wade scored 19 points and Arron Afflalo hit 17 points off the bench. Blake Griffin took Ekpe Udoh to town with 19 points and 9 rebounds but all in all we didn’t embarrass ourselves.

Detroit Pistons 60-20

We lose again, this time to Phoenix 89-84 as it was the battle of the centres as rookie Ramon Johnson had 6 points, 17 rebounds and 11 blocks (yes and double double the hard way) while Yao Ming put up 6 points and 19 rebounds with George Hill pacing us with 21 points.

Detroit Pistons 60-21

Another close game, this time we go down to Philadelphia 90-86 as Yao Ming is really turning back the clock with 16 points and 14 rebounds. The best for the 76ers was Luol Deng who scored 17 points and grabbed 7 rebounds.

Detroit Pistons 60-22

That ends the regular season so here is the final standings.

Eastern Conference:

2019 NBA Playoffs

Eastern Conference:
#1 Toronto vs. #8 New Jersey
#2 Detroit vs. #7 Boston
#3 Orlando vs. #6 Memphis
#4 New York vs. #5 Philadelphia

Western Conference:
#1 Denver vs. #8 Dallas
#2 Los Angeles vs. #7 Houston
#3 Sacramento vs. #6 Oklahoma City
#4 Milwaukee vs. #5 Portland

The East is stacked this year but it is good that we don’t have the potential match up of New York as we should have Orlando’s measure. We have to get past the Celts though but I’m confident that we can get through and hopefully beat Toronto.

Eastern Conference First Round: Boston vs. Detroit

Point Guard
Tony Rein vs. Nick Babul
13.3 points, 2.8 rebounds, 6.3 assists vs. 17.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, 7.1 assists

In a mid-season trade the Pistons nabbed the youthful Babul who has been electric in the absence of Derrick Rose. Rein is tiny and even though Babul isn’t the biggest guy around he should have his way with the Celtic PG.

Winner - Detroit

Shooting Guard
Alan Green vs. Tyreke Evans
15.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.6 assists vs. 21.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists

Green was given a massive contract and he hasn’t really lived up to that deal but he is only 24 years old so he may grow into it. That won’t help him this series as Evans has been in All NBA form and Green isn’t the best defender.

Winner – Detroit

Small Forward
Jim Seymour vs. Kevin King
10.9 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists vs. 22.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.1 assists

Although King is also having an All NBA season he should have a harder time than Evans as Seymour is a better defender and has the length to stay with King. The fourth year player won’t be able to stop King though as he has way too many tricks for Seymour to handle.

Winner - Detroit

Power Forward
Chris Bosh vs. Tiago Splitter
18.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists vs. 13.2 points, 7.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists

This is the match up that the Celtics need to win if they want to win this series. Bosh has been a leader from day one and he needs to step his game up to another level to drag them over the line. Splitter is an above average defender who will do everything he can to stop Bosh.

Winner - Boston

Centre
Andrea Bargnani vs. Chris Reese
14.1 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2.0 assists vs. 11.2 points, 9.2 rebounds, 1.4 assists

Having so many scoring options on the team has given Reese the chance to ease his way into the NBA by being a great rebounder and average defender. Bargnani can still rain threes and but scoring is usually his only skill but this year he has upped his rebounding numbers to over eight which will go a long way to helping the Celtics keep the series close.

Winner - Detroit

Bench
Jules Riley, Derrick Chambless, Darren Collison vs. Donte Hampton, Dwayne Wade, Ekpe Udoh

All three Celtics bench players are too short for their position but their talents make up for their stature. On the other side, the Pistons size will bully Boston’s bench all series long.

Winner – Detroit

Prediction – Detroit in five.

Jules Riley tells everyone that he isn’t too small by putting up 26 points, 6 assists and 7 steals as the Celtics dominate us 116-104. Andrea Bargnani has his way with 28 points and 9 rebounds to pick for Chris Bosh’s 10 points and 8 rebounds. Nick Babul was our best with 22 points and 11 assists but Chris Reese fouled out in 18 minutes while Tyreke Evans shot 6/15. Not a good start to the series and the Celtic fans are giving it to me for being a out and proud Boston hater.

Boston leads 1-0

Our crowd is out for revenge and the team doesn’t disappoint as we rip the Celtics apart 112-97 behind Nick Babul’s 27 points and 9 assists while Kevin King aided him with 28 points and 7 rebounds. Andrea Bargnani was the only Boston player to step up with 30 points and 11 rebounds as Chris Bosh had another subpar game with only 8 points and 11 rebounds.

Series tied 1-1

The series shifts to Boston and they punish us 111-91 as Chris Bosh finally steps into the leader’s shoes with 35 points as he went 23/30 from the foul line. Tony Rein had the best of Nick Babul with 20 points and 11 assists as we shoot a paltry 61% from the foul line. We had six players in double figures with Tyreke Evans leading the way with 21 points.

Boston leads 2-1

Chris Reese had his first proper game with 24 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks in our series tying 116-99 win. Kevin King had 26 points while Nick Baule playing facilitator with 17 points and 12 assists. Chris Bosh shoots 16/22 from the foul line for 30 points but the team shot 40% from the field to our 51%.

Series tied 2-2

There was only one series sweep as Toronto blasted New Jersey 4-0 with the other playoffs going strong.

For a series that is 2-2 the games really haven’t been close and tonight’s game wasn’t any different as we wallop them 119-99 with Kevin King doing the damage with 26 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists while Tyreke Evans does something with 22 points with Tiago Splitter and Nick Babul recording double doubles. Chris Bosh only shot eight free throws (making them all) for 18 points and 13 rebounds but the rest of the team were mediocre at best.

Detroit leads 3-2

Strangely enough, only one more series is over as #4 New York beating Philadelphia 4-1 with the other six series at 3-2.

We get out by a margin of 25 points as we finally put away those pesky Celtics by winning in Boston 111-86 as Kevin King (27 points) and Chris Reese (24 points and 11 rebounds) go to town. Jim Seymour had his best game of the series with 24 points but it was too little too late.

Detroit wins series 4-2

#6 Oklahoma City upset the #3 Kings in six games which puts an end to Derrick Rose and Orko’s playoff dreams while Orlando, Denver, Los Angeles and Milwaukee all beat their lower ranked opponents in seven games.

Up next – Orlando with their one/two punch of Marlon Zinn and Blake Griffin.

2018 NBA Playoffs

Eastern Conference:
#1 Toronto vs. #2 New York
#2 Detroit vs. #3 Orlando

Western Conference:
#1 Denver vs. #4 Milwaukee
#2 Los Angeles vs. #6 Oklahoma City

We went 1-2 on the season against the Magic but one of those losses was when we were resting our starters at the end of the season.

Eastern Conference Semi Final: Orlando vs. Detroit

Point Guard
Marlon Zinn vs. Nick Babul
21.4 points, 2.9 rebounds, 9.6 assists vs. 18.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, 9.7 assists

If Babul was matched against anyone else then he would get the nod but Marlon Zinn hasn’t gained the nickname ‘Buzzsaw’ for nothing. He tears up opponents in a way that is reminiscent of a prime Stephon Marbury who had the strength to get through defences but also being able to pass the ball with precision.

Winner - Orlando

Shooting Guard
Jason Roe vs. Tyreke Evans
10.9 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.7 assists vs. 15.8 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists

Evans had a terrible series by his standards as he shot a woeful 33% from the field but he should have his way with the subpar defender in Roe who may be taller and heavier (6’9, 232lbs) than Tyreke but is much, much slower.

Winner - Detroit

Small Forward
Jeff Green vs. Kevin King
11.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.6 assists vs. 23.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.8 assists

The only objective for the veteran Green – slow down Kevin King. The Magic won’t care if he scores in single digits but if he can keep King to less than 20 points it’s a huge win. Interesting tidbit, in his eight seasons King has had a total of two blocks. They both came in 2012 which means that he has been block-less for six seasons.

Winner - Detroit

Power Forward
Blake Griffin vs. Tiago Splitter
22.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, 1.9 assists vs. 11.7 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists

The same can be said of Splitter that was said of Jeff Green, he needs to slow down Blake Griffin. The Magic superstar has been in MVP form this season and will need to be better than that to get past the Pistons.

Winner - Orlando

Centre
Nikola Pekovic vs. Chris Reese
14.6 points, 9.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists vs. 15.8 points, 7.7 rebounds, 1.8 assists

The rookie Reese has been all by himself in this year’s rookie crop but Pekovic has gone from long term project to top 10 C in the league. His numbers are down on the season but Pekovic can take over games in an instant.

Winner - Orlando

Bench
Kenneth Thornton, Bobby Ellis, Daniel Orton vs. Donte Hampton, Dwayne Wade, Ekpe Udoh

There aren’t many teams that can match the Pistons’ big man stocks but with Thornton and Orton on the bench they can stay with Detroit. However, the rest of the Orlando bench doesn’t see much game time which could become problematic if their starters get in foul trouble.

Winner – Detroit

Prediction – Detroit in six.

Nikola Pekovic plays with Chris Reese all night long with 26 points and 17 rebounds but it was Tyreke Evans who had the best game with 35 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists in our 108-97 win. Orlando’s dynamic duo vanished as Blake Griffin was nullified with only 4 points while Marlon Zinn shot 6/16 for 20 points and 12 assists as Kevin King scored 23 points for us.

Detroit leads 1-0

There were two standouts in Toronto’s 130-90 win over New York as Tim Mozgov had 32 points and 21 rebounds while Rajon Rondo put up 18 points, 19 assists and 11 rebounds to take care of business. Oh, Tim got player of the game.

We go up 2-0 as we embarrass the Magic 112-75 with Kevin King taking the honours with 23 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds and 4 steals as Dwayne Wade turns back the clock with 17 points and 5 assists off the bench. Blake Griffin was again put in his place with 7 points and 7 rebounds while Kenneth Thornton was the best for the Magic with 11 points, 11 rebounds and 5 blocks off the bench.

Detroit leads 2-0

Going back to Florida is tough as those old folks are crazy and finally Blake Griffin has a blinder with 23 points and 18 rebounds but it wasn’t enough for our scoring balance as we take a commanding lead of the series with a 113-98 comfort win. The Pistons had eleven players with four points or more, led by Tyreke Evans’ 24 points and 5 steals. We shot 47% to their 48% but the Magic shot a paltry 51% from the foul line (15/29).

Detroit leads 3-0

Another massive game in another series, this time it’s Matt Bailey with 23 points, 17 rebounds and 12 blocks in the Lakers’ 95-76 win over Oklahoma City.

It was Marlon Zinn’s turn to have a big game with 35 points and 9 assists but the score line went the same way as we sweep the Magic 117-100 with Kevin King having 31 points and five other Piston players in double figures. The Magic fans were not impressed with their two stars and some Orlando blog writers are starting to doubt whether Zinn and Griffin can co-exist together.

Detroit wins series 4-0

Toronto takes care of New York 4-1 while Milwaukee upset the top seed in the West as they down Denver 4-2. The next night the Lakers finally get past the Thunder in a 117-106 game seven win.

Up next: The marketers dream – Toronto vs. Detroit.

2019 NBA Playoffs

Eastern Conference:
#1 Toronto vs. #2 Detroit

Western Conference:
#2 Los Angeles vs. #4 Milwaukee

We won the regular season series 3-1 and I’m very confident that we can overcome the Toronto summit as they don’t have that go to scorer in Kevin King this time which can hurt them in crunch time. I have been fairly calm in the first two series because I was expecting a win but if we win this series you may see me running around Detroit with or without clothes on.

Eastern Conference Finals: Detroit vs. Toronto

Point Guard
Nick Babul vs. Rajon Rondo
15.9 points, 3.0 rebounds, 8.8 assists vs. 11.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, 12.8 assists

The young Piston has cooled from his stellar first round but is still a fantastic point guard. Rajon Rondo is one of the best point guards around and is probably the best pure PG in the league with a A/T ratio of 5.2 in this playoffs.

Winner - Toronto

Shooting Guard
Tyreke Evans vs. Trent Bailey
19.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.9 assists vs. 21.2 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.4 assists

With the removal of Kevin King Bailey has stepped up his scoring numbers to become the Raptors’ best wing scorer. He also has the height and defensive talents to trouble Evans but Tyreke was on a roll last series and should continue this one.

Winner - Detroit

Small Forward
Kevin King vs. Reggie Williams
24.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.5 assists vs. 14.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3.1 assists

The wayward son has returned on the other side of the fence and should rip apart Williams. He is angry that the Raptors traded him for a known cancer after giving seven of his years to the team. Look out Toronto.

Winner - Detroit

Power Forward
Tiago Splitter vs. Tim Mozgov
11.9 points, 7.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists vs. 19.4 points, 11.4 rebounds, 1.0 assists

It’s the international match-up with the big Russian taking on the roll of enforcer down low. He may not be as strong as Dwight Howard but he is much, much quicker and polished. Splitter did a great job on Blake Griffin last round but Tim Mozgov is taller and has the post skills to match.

Winner - Toronto

Centre
Chris Reese vs. Dwight Howard
14.8 points, 8.8 rebounds, 1.5 assists vs. 19.4 points, 11.4 rebounds, 1.1 assists

It’s the battle of the old and the new. Dwight Howard has been the best centre in the league for a long time until Matt Bailey came along while Chris Reese has the potential to be the next new one. He isn’t there yet so Howard has a big edge.

Winner - Toronto

Bench
Donte Hampton, Yao Ming, Dwayne Wade vs. Danny Granger, Zach Randolph, Nicolas Batum

The three Raptor bench players could all start for other teams and they also have #3 pick Battal Selaniki on there as well which gives them the edge over the aging Piston bench.

Prediction – Toronto in six.

I had to be ushered in the back door because security thought the Raptor fans would rip me apart for deserting them. I don’t see what is so wrong because they have won four straight titles and Tim Duncan has been great in my place. Tyreke Evans top scored with 31 points and Dwayne Wade had 19 points off the bench but Kevin King went 8/23 from the field but somehow we forced overtime. However it was all the D&M show as Tim Mozgov goes off for 31 points and 10 rebounds while Dwight Howard had 20 points and 12 rebounds as they draw first blood with a 121-116 win as the crowd booed every time we had the ball, which I expected because of our history.

Toronto leads 1-0

It would be great to steal a win in Canada and we get out to a 17 point lead in the first half only to see it evaporate to a 13 point loss, 107-94. It was the Raptors’ backcourt this time as Trent Bailey had a fantastic individual effort with 27 points, 9 assists, 7 rebounds and 7 steals with Rajon Rondo helping him out with 20 points of his own. Kevin King shot better for 30 points while Splitter and Reese combined for 31 points and 25 rebounds. This outcome forces us to win both games at home and hope for a win where only two teams won in the regular season.

Toronto leads 2-0

I may be biased but I reckon the Detroit crowd was louder than the Toronto one, probably because they haven’t been here before and are hungry for a title. Our guys don’t disappoint as all five of our starters score 13 points or more, and the one who scored only 13, Nick Babul, made up for it with 17 assists as we win 118-105. Kevin King was the beneficiary of those passes with 35 points and 8 rebounds while Tiago Splitter bested Tim Mozgov with 22 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks. Reggie Williams top scored for the Raptors with 21 points while Dwight Howard had 14 points, 12 rebounds and 7 blocks but we shot 18 more free throws in some good ol’ home cooking.

Toronto leads 2-1

The Raptors wanted revenge and had three players over 20 points and got out to a 10 point lead with five minutes to go in the game before Kevin King took it upon himself to be the hero and got us out of jail with a 101-96 series tying win. King had 27 points, eight in the last two minutes while Nick Babul and Tiago Splitter recorded double doubles. Dwight Howard (22 points), Trent Bailey (20 points) and Reggie Williams (20 points) tried their best and kept us to 36% from the field but we shot a massive 56 free throws and had a FT differential of 30 which fouled out two Raptors and three others had five fouls. I swear I didn’t pay the refs, nor did any of my associates which my lawyer told me to say.

Series tied 2-2

The West series is also tied at 2-2 with the Bucks making it very hard for Matt Bailey to dominate games like he usually does.

This is it. We need to win this game to have a chance at upsetting the Raptor juggernaut. Too bad Tim Mozgov woke up again with 32 points and 14 rebounds while Trent Bailey and Reggie Williams pitched in with 18 points apiece. But Rajon Rondo went 0/10 from the field which gave Dwayne Wade the chance to become the spoiler with 21 points and 7 assists off the bench as we take the series lead 3-2 with a 116-107 win. Tyreke Evans won player of the game with 27 points while Kevin King had a great all around game with 21 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists as we are one win away, in Detroit, to get this giant monkey off our backs.

Detroit leads 3-2

Did I say that last game was it? Well with a packed out crowd and a standing area the crowd thinks that this is the game. We don’t want to go back to Toronto to try and steal another game there. Dwight Howard had 33 points and 14 rebounds while Reggie Williams 23 points but the Toronto backcourt went 2/22 (!), compared to ours that had 45 points, 9 rebounds and 11 assists as we take the series 4-2 with a history making 108-96 win. The great part was that neither our guards was named player of the game, that honour went to Tiago Splitter who destroyed Tim Mozgov with 23 points, 14 rebounds and 4 blocks. I just need to step outside for a second...

YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WE DID IT!! WE BEAT TORONTO AND ARE PLAYING FOR THE TITLE! Suck on that Tim Duncan, riding on my coattails.

Detroit wins series 4-2

Ahem, well played to Toronto as we will now face to Cinderella Milwaukee Bucks who upstaged Los Angeles 114-107 in game seven behind Jrue Holiday’s 38 points. I have a great feeling that we can beat the Bucks and I sure am happy that we won’t be going up against Matt Bailey and the Lakers.

Up next: Bring It ON!

It was crazy as I really didn't think we were ready to beat the behemoth of the Toronto Raptors. Luckily for us we had Kevin King on our side which really made the difference in the series.

2019 NBA Finals

#2 Detroit vs. #4 Milwaukee

We lost the series 0-2 against the Bucks but the way we have been playing in this post season I really think we can go all the way.

NBA Finals: Milwaukee vs. Detroit

Point Guard
Brandon Jennings vs. Nick Babul
17.1 points, 3.5 rebounds, 7.1 assists vs. 14.3 points, 3.1 rebounds, 8.1 assists

This will be a key matchup because of the different styles that each player exhibits. Jennings is a flashy guard that loves to put up big points while Babul held his own against Rajon Rondo last series and loves to get the ball to the open man. The Piston gets the nod purely on his superior talent.

Winner – Detroit

Shooting Guard
Jrue Holiday vs. Tyreke Evans
18.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4.9 assists vs. 20.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.1 assists

Evans was good against the big Trent Bailey and he loves to demolish smaller SGs. Holiday has been fantastic this post season but he is three inches and 30lbs lighter than Evans and this difference will be telling during the series.

Winner - Detroit

Small Forward
Jason Thornton vs. Kevin King
18.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.2 assists vs. 24.4 points, 5.4 rebounds, 4.3 assists

Thornton is the guy that every team wants – he is the quintessential glue guy who doesn’t do anything great but handles all aspects of the game well. Too bad King is one of the guys who DOES do everything great and will eat Thornton for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Winner - Detroit

Power Forward
Joey Kouser vs. Tiago Splitter
12.7 points, 9.6 rebounds, 1.8 assists vs. 14.3 points, 8.8 rebounds, 1.4 assists

The closest match-up so far for the Bucks as Splitter is probably the fifth best Detroit starter. Kouser has the length to bother Splitter but at 216lbs he is a twig ready to be snapped. Luckily for Kouser he is a fantastic defender and outside shooter that will trouble the Brazilian who usually likes to play closer to the ring.

Winner - Draw

Centre
Ashley Mosley vs. Chris Reese
9.5 points, 12.7 rebounds, 1.8 assists vs. 13.0 points, 9.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists

It’s the battle between offense and defense as Reese is a great scorer while Mosley is a great defender. Another key battle that could swing the momentum to the team with the victor, especially as Reese will be banged up for the first game.

Winner - Draw

Bench
Joshua Potter, James Harris, Paul Milsap vs. Yao Ming, Donte Hampton, Dwayne Wade

Wade was the difference in the Toronto series as his scoring skills dragged the Pistons over the line in some of the games while Potter and Hampton are exact opposites like the Mosley/Reese matchup. The Detroit bench is simply too strong for the shallow depth of the Bucks’ reserves.

Winner – Detroit

Prediction – Detroit in four.

Since I have been in the league the Pistons have gone 300-438 which includes my two seasons. You would think that the fans would be craving a title but everyone I talk to think that this one is in the bag and are already celebrating. This is trouble and I will only celebrate when that final siren sounds and we are on the winning side.

The last time the Pistons won the title was in 2004 with the star team, opposed to the team of stars with Ben and Rasheed Wallace, Rip Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince and of course Chauncey Billups. I saw all five of those ex-players when I walked in the stadium sitting in the front row together with huge grins on their faces as they want this team to win. That kind of pressure didn’t help as we didn’t lead all game and lost the first test 96-81 as the whole state of Michigan was stunned. Jrue Holiday led from the front with 26 points and 8 assists while Ashley Mosley got the best of Chris Reese with 10 points and 20 rebounds. Nick Babul was bullied all game and turned the ball over 11 times and the whole game was a mess. We need to regroup and start the next game ready to go.

Milwaukee leads 1-0

Kevin King got into the team before the start of game two and told them to have some pride in that jersey and show some balls. The pep talk worked as we ran the Bucks off their feet, outscoring them 56-39 in the second half to win 107-93 to tie the series 1-1. King backed up his bark with 29 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists while Nick Babul looked like a totally different person with 21 points, 15 assists and only 4 turnovers. Ashley Mosley was again terrific with 14 points and 16 rebounds but we shot 19 more free throws than Milwaukee.

Series tied 1-1

The Bucks haven’t won it all since 1971 so their fans were practically foaming at the mouth going back to Wisconsin, especially after they stole game one. They were practically storming the court when they were up by eleven at three quarter time but the reason I traded for Kevin King was that he had ice water in his veins and knew how to finish games. Fourth quarter score – 30-19 Detroit which gave us back the home court advantage with a 105-98 come from behind win. King had 27 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists as all our starters were on song with Tyreke Evans chipping in with 24 points and Chris Reese and Tiago Splitter doubling up. Ashley Mosley had a quiet night, fouling out in only 13 minutes which left a huge hole in the middle which we could take advantage of. In fact, three of the Bucks’ starters fouled out as we shot 48 free throws, hitting 34 of them.

Detroit leads 2-1

It was Milwaukee’s turn to play spoiler with a 40-28 fourth quarter blitz and tied the series 2-2 behind Brandon Jennings (28 points), Ashley Mosley (21 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks) and Jrue Holiday (20 points). It was a track meet as both teams were over 50% as Kevin King had 29 points while Donte Hampton rose from the bench with 14 points and 8 rebounds as Chris Reese was again nullified. One more game in Milwaukee then two in Detroit but I don’t want it to get that far.

Series tied 2-2

Well that was embarrassing. We shoot 29% from the field in a 115-79 white washing to leave the Bucks one win from the title. Let me say that again – 29% from the field. I don’t want to go over this game and just get back to Detroit. Where is that brain bleach to remove this game from my memory?

Milwaukee leads 3-2

Ah some home cooking. Nick Babul shows up again after being Brandon Jennings’ bitch last game with 22 points, 11 assists and 5 rebounds in our series tying 99-78 win. Our starters combined for all but eight of our points while Jrue Holiday was the best for Milwaukee with 23 points while Ashley Mosley put up 8 points, 16 rebounds and 6 blocks. One more game.

Series tied 3-3

My heart is beating like it wants to run away. I don’t want to be that team that loses the championship after being practically given the trophy before it started. The crowd is massive and loud and I heard after the game that it set off many car alarms. There was a huge screen set up outside the stadium for all the people who couldn’t get tickets and it was being tipped as being the highest watch television broadcast in Detroit history. All that is needed is for us to pull through and win the game.

Ashley Mosley had a massive night, going 25 points, 21 rebounds and 6 blocks while the Bucks’ backcourt combined for 35 points and 11 assists. They just weren’t enough for our superstar who took over the game when no-one else would as Kevin King was named player of the game and Finals MVP in our 105-94 championship clinching win with 26 points and 5 steals!! Our backcourt was better with 40 points, 12 rebounds and 14 assists as streamers came from the ceiling, giving our Dad’s Army of Yao Ming, Dwayne Wade, Dirk Nowitzki and Kobe Bryant another championship ring before they retire. Sure some will come back but Kobe will be gone after 22 seasons and I wouldn’t be surprised if others follow suit.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE DETROIT PISTONS, THE 2018-2019 NBA CHAMPIONS!!!!!

As I stand in the corner as the team jump and scream and hug loved ones while holding the Larry O’Brien Trophy I contemplate my own future. In just nine years I have taken two different teams to three championships, and I wonder how many teams one GM has taken to the Promised Land. I decided over my first of many glasses of champagne that I will break that record.

From this day forward, I will dedicate my life to winning a championship with all 32 teams in the NBA. Two down, thirty to go...

How the Pistons won the Title

First and foremost, it started with General Manager Felix Elwood who didn’t care if he stepped on someone’s toes and if he saw someone better he traded anyone and everyone to get them. Here are the players who did it for him –

#14 Andrew Norwood, PG, 6 year pro, Oregon State
Stats – 31 games, 7.7 minutes, 2.3 points, 2.1 assists, 0.6 rebounds, 0.1 steals, 0.0 blocks
Acquired by – free agency

A favourite of Elwood’s because of his work ethic and great personality, he may not be the best player on the team and spent a lot of time on the IR list but his work in practice really pushed the other teams to try harder.

#13 Kobe Bryant, SG, 22 year pro, High School
Stats – 32 games, 8.0 minutes, 3.7 points, 0.9 rebounds, 0.8 assists, 0.3 steals, 0.0 blocks
Acquired by – free agency

Although he is 39 years old and has been on the IR for a while now, Bryant knows how to get a team going and isn’t shy about putting people in their places. He has been a huge asset because of his drive and vast knowledge that comes with experience.

#25 Arron Afflalo, SG, 11 year pro, UCLA
Stats – 46 games, 8.4 minutes, 4.1 points, 0.9 rebounds, 0.4 assists, 0.2 steals, 0.1 blocks
Acquired by – free agency

Being the third SG on a team that has Tyreke Evans and Dwayne Wade can be difficult but Afflalo has waited his time and now has a ring to show for it. At 6’5 he has the body to push Evans and Wade at practice to get better.

#41 Dirk Nowitzki, PF, 20 year pro, Germany
Stats – 44 games, 7.3 minutes, 3.5 points, 1.5 rebounds, 0.3 assists, 0.1 steals, 0.0 blocks
Acquired by – free agency

The big German may have slowed due to age but it was Nowitzki who pioneered older players to take a massive pay cut and come to Detroit looking for a ring. He was excellent last season as the first big man off the bench and could be called upon to score this year when the chips were down.

#7 George Hill, PG, 10 year pro, IUPUI
Stats – 57 games, 3 starts, 10.7 minutes, 5.6 points, 0.8 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 0.4 steals, 0.1 blocks
Acquired by – trade

At the time trading Josh Smith for George Hill was in the favour of the Warriors but the way Hill captained the team when Nick Babul was resting was outstanding. His numbers aren’t big but his discipline and intelligence made the team trust him to make the proper pass or play.

#34 Tim Leep, PF, 5 year pro, Duke
Stats – 3 games, 12.7 minutes, 6.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 0.7 steals, 0.7 blocks
Acquired by – free agency

Tim only played in 3 regular season games because he was picked off the free agent pile late but he played well in those games as well as the playoffs. Some ponder if he was given proper minutes and help he could have been a starter in the league.

#50 Yao Ming, C, 16 year pro, China
Stats – 72 games, 3 starts, 8.3 minutes, 3.6 points, 3.0 rebounds, 0.4 assists, 0.2 steals, 0.5 blocks
Acquired by – free agency

At 37 years old some people may say that Yao is finished, but his play during the playoffs was of someone 10 years younger. He is molasses slow now but his rebounding and finesse around the basket will never go out of style.

#39 Ekpe Udoh, PF, 8 year pro, Baylor
Stats – 73 games, 3 starts, 11.4 minutes, 3.4 points, 2.2 rebounds, 0.5 assists, 0.1 steals, 1.5 blocks
Acquired by – trade

Even though his minutes have been severely reduced from 26.5 in 2016-17 to 11.4 this year he hasn’t grumbled too much. Sure there were times when Elwood tried to trade him but was denied because of his massive contract but Udoh stuck it out and is now a world champion.

#3 Dwayne Wade, SG, 15 year pro, Marquette
Stats – 53 games, 3 starts, 13.7 minutes, 7.0 points, 1.4 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 0.6 steals, 0.2 blocks
Acquired by – free agency

One of the reasons that the Pistons are winners is because of Wade’s ability to swallow his pride and become a bench player. Especially when he goes off for 19 and 21 points in decisive games in the Toronto series. At 36 he still has a few years left in the tank which bolsters Detroit’s reserves immensely.

#47 Donte Hampton, PF, 1 year pro, UCLA
Stats – 74 games, 14 starts, 24.3 minutes, 6.6 points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 0.6 steals, 0.1 blocks
Acquired by – trade

The X-Factor of the team because when Hampton is on his game then the Pistons usually win. With suffocating defensive skills and the ability to inhale rebounds he is everything a team needs in a bench big.

#52 Chris Reese, C, rookie, Baylor
Stats – 81 games, 76 starts, 28.7 minutes, 11.2 points, 9.2 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 0.7 steals, 0.7 blocks
Acquired by – draft

Replacing the inconsistent Dex Floyd at centre, Reese took his time to adjust to NBA life but when he did the whole league was put on notice. Already have career highs of 27 points and 25 rebounds the future looks bright for Reese and the Pistons.

#22 Tiago Splitter, PF, 8 year pro, Brazil
Stats – 79 games, 62 starts, 31.2 minutes, 13.2 points, 7.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 0.8 steals, 2.3 blocks
Acquired by – free agency

After turning down a contract from the lowly Spurs estimated at over $10 million a year, Splitter decided that he wanted to go to a contender and provided the steady leadership that only experience brings. At 33 years old he was the guy who rallied the big man troops by example and was able to score in bunches and provide the shot blocking Detroit needed.

#20 Nick Babul, PG, 2 year pro, Kansas State
Stats – 78 games, 78 starts, 34.5 minutes, 17.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, 7.1 assists, 1.6 steals, 0.2 blocks
Acquired by – trade

Replacing captain Derrick Rose was going to be a huge task but the young Babul did it wonderfully. Filled with youthful swagger he produced nights where he was electrifying not only scoring the ball but finding the open man with a bullet pass.

#24 Tyreke Evans, SG, 9 year pro, Memphis
Stats – 78 games, 78 starts, 38.0 minutes, 21.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 1.7 steals, 0.8 blocks
Acquired by – trade

Acquiring Evans from Sacramento proved to be the catalyst for the team, as they realised that they have a shot at immortality. Not only a dynamite scorer he is a fantastic all around player that bonded with Kevin King almost immediately.

#29 Kevin King (Captain), SF, 7 year pro, Syracuse
Stats – 79 games, 76 starts, 37.8 minutes, 22.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 2.1 steals, 0.0 blocks
Acquired by – trade

Took to the captain’s role like a duck to water, King showed that you don’t have to have a big voice to be effective, but you better have a big game to back it up. He wasn’t scared to get into people’s faces to tell them what he thought but most of the time led from the front with his skill and grace. Was named Finals MVP for his outstanding performance in leading his team to their first championship in over 15 years.

Coach – Mike Woodson, 8 years experience, 60-22, 1st NBA Championship

Coach Woodson was thought to be finished as he hadn’t coached in around six years until Elwood came knocking. Last season he was instrumental in bringing team that was almost completely new and bonded them together with intensity and caring. It is his first championship as a coach but for his sake, hopefully not his last.

1st Assistant – Tye Coursey, 41 years old
2nd Assistant – Damon Stoudamire, 45 years old
3rd Assistant – Jeff Ruland, 59 years old
General Manager – Felix Elwood, 46 years old

Chris Paul really shouldn’t have won this many MVPs as there are plenty of players who are more valuable than him. Matt Bailey would have romped it in if he wasn’t injured for half the season. Good to see Reese win RoY but it wasn’t contested while Mike Woodson got robbed for CoY.

Mr. McCreight bowled me over when I answered the door and hugged me until my ribs nearly broke. He asks me about next season and I pause. I tell him that I have done all I can for the team and I’m going to spread my wings elsewhere.

“What!?!? You’re leaving us just after we have won it all? Don’t you want to build a dynasty here or do you hate it here?”

I was close to telling him about my goal but I don’t think he would like me going to another team and building them up to championship contender.

“Sorry but I have made my mind up.” I responded.

“Well, too bad for you, YOU’RE DEAD TO ME!” And he stormed out. I didn’t expect that at all.

The next day I ring up Utah to see if I can right that mess but they want to stay in mediocrity. I get a call from Gil Danbert, the owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers who offered me the job without hearing my proposal.

“I think your resume speaks for itself.” Mr. Danbert interjected.

And what a situation I have landed in, he is a great owner! He cares about the basketball and not making a profit, which shows that the first thing he told me is that he wants to be competing for a championship in four years and I have a near unlimited amount of money to work with. Just my kind of guy, and I’m sure we will get along just fine.

I look over the coaches and I’m nearly sick to my stomach. Isiah Thomas is head coach. No freaking way. I fire him and promote 1st assistant Kevin Garnett to head coach. Garnett has all the making of a fantastic coach, with potential to be the best coach in the league in a few years so getting him in the spotlight early will do him wonders. Kyle Bakken and Bob Beyer also get promoted to first and second assistant respectively while I signed Doug Overton to the third assistant role.

Here is the Cleveland roster before the draft –

PG Sam Baron, 2 year pro
Sam is the cornerstone of the franchise and at only 22 years old we have high hopes for him. Like Marlon Zinn high.

PG LaVell Deeter, 6 year pro
Is a good bench PG but his defense is lacking. I will keep him around unless I need to include him in a blockbuster trade.

PG Chucky Searcy, 1 year pro
He should not be in the league and after his contract runs out he is out of the Cavs team.

SF Quadree Johnson, 2 year pro
Huge prospect but has terrible work ethic. He will be traded as soon as possible because his value won’t be any higher.

SF Carmelo Anthony, 16 year pro
He can score the ball but isn’t very good at other things anymore. That is understandable at 34 years old but I will try and trade him because I don’t think he is worth $17 million a year.

PF Reggie Young, 5 year pro
Not as good as hyped when he came out of college but I believe that he can nab someone elite in a trade. He is also owed $102 million which is unacceptable for someone of his talent.

PF Ed Lilly, 5 year pro
He is a wonderful bench player and is paid properly as well. Lilly will definitely be in a Cleveland jersey when the season starts.

C Dex Floyd, 5 year pro
Still unbelievably inconsistent which annoys me no end. Another player who will be traded as soon as possible.

So as you can see, if I have my way most of the current players won’t be on the team when the next season starts.

Consensus mock draft –

1 – Chicago – PG Gorazd Spaho
2 – Boston – C Joe Price
3 – Houston – SF Ketevan Abashidze
4 – Oklahoma City – PF Steven Dukes
5 – Dallas – PG Mark Borman
6 – Seattle – SF Delawn Pederson
7 – Philadelphia – SG Bill Stetson
8 – Philadelphia – C Kyle Parker
9 – Golden State – C Ben Kante
10 – Phoenix – PG John Williams
11 – Minnesota – SG Michael Howard
12 – San Diego – SF Joe Hite
13 – San Antonio – PF David Christian
14 – Miami – SF Luciano Tafarel
15 – Nevada – PG Riccardo Lucetti
16 – Cleveland – SG Schea Cooper

This seems alright, maybe John Williams a bit higher but I will be very happy if Cooper falls to us.

2019 NBA Draft

1 – Chicago – PG John Williams
Wow! Big leap of faith here. Williams is good but I really don’t think that he is #1 pick good.

Time to go shopping.

Cleveland trade:
PF Reggie Young

Miami trade:
PF Darrell Holtz

Why for Cleveland:
Coming out of college Young was touted as the next big thing but five years on he is a very good player, just not great. Holtz is one of those great players as he has been selected to the All NBA teams twice in five years.

Why for Miami:
They still have faith in Young to be THAT guy which he definitely can be. It’s up to him now because the Heat gave up a lot to get him.

Winner – Cleveland
Right now Holtz is better than Young but if Young can pull his finger out then it could become very even soon.

2 – Boston – C Joe Price
He should have gone first so the Celtics are very happy. Even at 22 years old he still has plenty of areas to work on but all reports say that his work ethic is sky high.

Trading time take two. Damn, Toronto won’t budge on Dwight Howard so I sit put for at least another pick.

3 – Houston – SF Ketevan Abashidze
Another nice pick here and the experts applaud it. Some say that he is a poor man’s Osmo Koslewski as he is 6’10 and has a very nice stroke.

I have my PG and PF for the future so all I need now is a SG, SF and C. That won’t be hard will it?

A-ha! I knew they would come around –

Cleveland trade:
C Dexter Floyd
SF Quadree Johnson
PG Chucky Searcy

Toronto trade:
C Dwight Howard

Why for Cleveland:
Sure he is 33 years old and when his contract runs out he will be 37 but right now he is a fantastic centre that can contribute many times more than Dex Floyd could.

Why for Toronto:
They needed some youth in the team so they got someone less talented but five years younger. Quadree Johnson is a huge project but if he can grow into his potential he will be a steal.

Winner – Draw
Cleveland got better talent but for how long? Toronto is building for the future.

OK that means I only have Carmelo Anthony to trade and I should be good, but who will take a 34 year old on a giant salary?

4 – Oklahoma City – PF Steven Dukes
He slipped off the radar late but he is still a fantastic prospect. Good to see that the Thunder are building a balanced team unlike past seasons.

5 – Dallas – PG Gorazd Spaho
Slipped because he was exposed a little in the combine at only 158lbs but is a great shooter and can actually battle for rebounds.

There really isn’t many good tall SGs in the league these days so I try and find an elite PG to make a Felton/Bebutov like guard rotation. Too bad the 76ers don’t want to trade Chris Paul but I do find a decent deal that I think will help us.

Cleveland trade:
SF Carmelo Anthony
16th pick

Golden State trade:
PG Stephen Curry

Why for Cleveland:
GM Elwood didn’t like paying Melo that much money for being one dimensional so he picked up an unselfish player in Steph Curry who should mesh with superstar Sam Baron to for a small yet potent backcourt team.

Why for Golden State:
Their SF stocks haven’t been good for who knows when and even though Melo is on the downward slope he can still bring it every night. The #16 pick will help too.

Winner – Cleveland
Curry and Baron will become the new Raymond Felton/Varlam Bebutov of the league while the Warriors will stay in the mid range.

I am now out of trading assets so I’m done for the moment.

6 – Seattle – SG Bill Stetson
If Stetson was a couple of inches taller he would have gone #1 no doubt. Silky smooth shooter and an excellent passer look for the Sonics to run and gun.

7 – Philadelphia – SG Michael Howard
Hmm, not sure about this one. Very streaky shooter that could have been taken at the end of the lottery.

8 – Philadelphia – SG Schea Cooper
Why did they take two SGs in a row? Cooper is probably the better player but it is baffling taking Howard then Cooper.

9 – Golden State – SF Delawn Pederson
Isn’t a very good defender but he is a fantastic outside shooter. He will have plenty of tutelage from Carmelo Anthony.

10 – Phoenix – PG Mark Borman
Another skinny PG (158lbs) and not the best shooter or decision maker. Still for number 10 there are worse options.

I’m looking to trade up to snag Joe Hite but all I have left are next season’s first round picks from us and Detroit so it’s slim pickings at the moment.

11 – Minnesota – C Kyle Parker
The best remaining C on the board and follows on from previous small Cs in the league at only 6’9. He could have been taken later but the Timberwolves are desperate for a legitimate centre instead of PFs masquerading as Cs.

12 – San Diego – SF Joe Hite
Damn, there he goes. At 6’10 he should be able to step in and start at SF from day one if all the cards fall his way. Great pick.

13 – San Antonio – PG Brian McMillian
Good shooter but doesn’t stand out in most areas. Terrible pick for in the lottery and could have been taken at least 10 picks lower.

14 – Miami – SG Brandin Schafer
At last a SG who is over 6’3 and is the player that the Spurs should have taken.

15 – Nevada – PG Riccardo Lucetti
The enigma of the draft as he could become the next Varlam Bebutov or he could flame out and be out of the league after his rookie contract.

16 – Golden State – C DerMarr London
A massive unti at 7’5 and can score with the best of him. Unlucky for the Warriors he has terrible hands and needs time and experience to become a legitimate NBA player.

17 – Dallas – PG Shawn Williamson
Is pretty much a spot up shooter but when you have Lebron James and Rashid Shiran on the team that is all that is required from a PG.

18 – Houston – PG Oliver White
Streaky as they come but when he is on he is on. Everything else? As Charles Barkley would say, “Turrible”. I do not like this pick at all.

19 – New Jersey – SF Lucino Tafarel
Great pick from the Nets as Tafarel should have been taken at least five picks earlier. This could be the steal of the draft.

20 – Oklahoma City – PG Caswell Seek
Seek is the first guy I have ever seen called Caswell, and that is probably the best thing about him. At least he has a good ice breaker when he meets the team and when the door hits him on the way out.

21 – Boston – SF Landon Denis
Another player that could have been taken much earlier which may give the Celtics the best grade in the draft.

22 – Memphis – SG Darryl Dixon
Dixon is a great scorer and has a fantastic ability to rise above a defender to get a good shot off. For pick number 22 this is a decent one.

23 – Indiana – PF David Christian
A player who has a great shot but takes a while to get it off. He needs a good PG to feed him the ball but he is another pick that gets a passing grade.

24 – Philadelphia – SF Jasper Caspers
Like Caswell Seek another player with an outstanding name, but unlike Seek Caspers is a great pick. I would even go as far as picking Caspers over Seek.

25 – New Jersey – SG Charles Clark
Ladies and gentlemen, here is your steal of the draft. He can score from anywhere on the court and is an average defender. How did other teams let this guy slip through?

26 – New York – SF Tommy Hassell
A player that likes to get out and run and at 6’7, 231lbs no one will get in his way. He will never be a great scorer but having Raymond Felton and Varlam Bebutov getting him the ball this pick looks very, very good.

27 – Sacramento – C Ronell Minor
I can’t believe how many steals there has been at the end of this draft and Minor is no different. A rebounding monster he should have enough lateral movement to play with DeMarcus Cousins to form a massive frontline.

28 – Los Angeles – SF DeWayne Tyler
Yep, another steal. Maybe we should just get rid of the middle of the first round and just go to the 20s and have the players picked where they should be picked.

29 – Milwaukee- SG Battal Isa
An unbelievable shooter but is too unselfish with the ball. Even though he is a decent pick at this stage the steal run has finished.

30 – Orlando – PG Vidal Gray
A great passer but can’t shoot to save himself. Needs to work on his shooting or will be out of a job.

31 – Golden State – C Jermaine Cummings
Cummings is a ridiculous athlete that at 6’11 can do dunks a 6’4 guy can only dream of. He needs to work on his skills to become a decent player at this level.

32 – Toronto – PG Eric Schau
The best thing Schau has on his scouting report is that he is a good free throw shooter. Not even a great one, which makes him one of the worst first round picks I have ever witnessed. Tim Duncan is not a good drafter.

There were some pretty big trades in the draft –

Portland trade:
PF Grant White

Chicago trade:
SG Jackie Summerall

Why for Portland:
It may be a trade where they got less talent back but Summerall doesn’t need much court time, he is a great guy and plays decent defense. Exactly what they need from a bench guard.

Why for Chicago:
They are taking a huge risk because although White is a good player and could start for most teams he is known to be a locker room cancer that will disrupt team’s confidence.

Winner – Portland
Getting rid of White makes it an automatic win for the Trailblazers.

San Antonio trade:
SG Shane Rein

Indiana trade:
PG Dan Besecker

Why for San Antonio:
Having Evan Turner, Kyle Craig and Rein on the same team without a proper PG was disastrous last season so they shipped out the least valuable of the three and brought in a legit PG in Besecker, who at only 21 years old can grow up with the reins of the team.

Why for Indiana:
SG Dennis Stone has the capabilities to play the PG like Brandon Roy does for the Blazers so putting him together with a nice young SG in Rein will make this team stronger.

Winner – Both
Great move from both teams getting something that will move them forward.

Seattle trade:
PG Jerry Dickenman
PG Myron Anderson

Utah trade:
PF Roy Michaels

Why for Seattle:
Michaels has star potential that was being wasted at Utah and even though Seattle now have to hope Cerrah Melen comes back at PG they have a very nice, balanced team on their hands.

Why for Utah:
They finally sort out their depth imbalance while getting a sweet young PG prospect in Dickenman. Oti Brown moves to his natural PF position as the Jazz have no-one player under contract past next season.

Winner – Seattle
Sure it helped out the Jazz a bit but Michaels can be an All Star very soon and should get the opportunity in Seattle.

Sacramento trade:
PF Mike Garner

Milwaukee trade:
SG Luther Marquis

Why for Sacramento:
One hole in the Kings outfit was that they didn’t have a proper SG after they traded Tyreke Evans away. In comes Marquis who was electric in his rookie season at Milwaukee but had the sophomore slump last season. He should explode the time with passes from Derrick Rose and Osmo Koslewski.

Why for Milwaukee:
The Bucks had too many guards and not enough forwards so they rebalance their line-up by slotting in Garner at PF. They now have a very nice front court of Garner and Ashley Mosley who will terrorize opposition forwards for years to come.

Winner – Both
Another trade where both teams trade young stars for someone who balances out their roster. Win/win for the Kings and Bucks.
