Game #82

Jan 14, 2002: McNeese St (8-7, 3-1) @ #18 Alabama St (15-0, 4-0)

Pregame Notes

Tip off

We are using m2m defense exclusively, as MCNST historically shoots well from the outside against us. Defense has worked so far, as MCNST just 1-5 FG, and 6 turn overs already.
13:22, Up 14-4

We're not exactly shooting the lights out, as SG Joe Lewis is spending more time in the bench saddled with 3 fouls. But our defense remains consistent, esp from the perimeter.
6:14, Up 26-13

MCNST able to cut our lead to 9. We then went with a 2-PG lineup, and it helped us force more turnovers on MCNST, and speed up our offense.

Halftime, Up 43-27
Our bench once again delivered in the 1st half, scoring 24 pts.

Start of 2nd half

SG Joe Lewis making up for lost time. After going scoreless (in 6 mins) in the 1st half, Lewis has erupted for 14 pts so far in the 2nd half, including 4 from downtown. This game has now officially become a blowout
13:00, Up 66-32

SG Joe Lewis drained another 3 just for good measure, before retiring early to the bench, at the halfway mark of the 2nd half. Our bench warmers once again finished the game for us.

Final Score: McNeese St - 48, Alabama St - 92
All of our 13 scholarship players scored! To top it all, we only committed 3 turn overs the entire game. Very pleased with our performance today.

Game #83

Postby randy » Wed Oct 29, 2014 5:20 am

Jan 18, 2002: #15 Alabama St (16-0, 5-0) @ Austin Peay (6-10, 3-2)

Pregame Notes
  • PEAY shoots below 29% 3PT
  • C Robbie Wise is slightly injured, and will play just limited minutes today

Tip off

We're shooting poorly with 2-10 FG. We got PEAY into early penalty, but we're also missing from the line, 4-9 FT
12:17, Down 8-18

We started to take it more on the inside to get higher percentage shots. C Chris Hawkins scoring 7 pts off the bench. But PEAY is consistently hitting their outside shots.
7:57, Down 19-29

PEAY always had an answer for every small run we make. One of worst shooting teams in the conference, and yet they are making 55% FG today

Halftime, Down 35-46
We have to risk it more, and further increase def intensity which is near maximum already.

Start of 2nd half

We're forcing more turn overs on PEAY, and dominating the boards. We're currently on a 13-0 run, the last was a triple by SG Joe Lewis for the go-ahead basket.
16:30, Up 48-46

We committed 4 turn overs i less than 5 minutes, slowing down our momentum. Our foul count is also rising, due to the increased def intensity
10:52, Up 55-53

Both teams with 14 turn overs each. SG Joe Lewis just hit a 3 to give us a 6-pt lead. We're in the penalty though
6:07, Up 63-57

PEAY able to cut down our lead to 3. And then, PG Johnny Victor and SG joe Lewis hit back-to-back 3s
4:08, Up 69-60

PEAY also got into penalty, and we were contented to just exchange FTs with them for the remainder of the game. After scoring 46 pts in the 1st half, our improved defense limited PEAY to just 19 in the 2nd half.

Final Score: Alabama St - 74, Austin Peay - 65
Aside from our 2nd half defense, rebounding was also a key factor in our win.

Postby randy » Wed Oct 29, 2014 11:26 am

Jan 21, 2003: #15 Alabama St (17-0, 6-0) @ Texas Southern (11-6, 3-3)

Pregame Notes
  • A week ago, TXSO had a triple OT home win against MVST, with a final score of 122-109
  • TXSO is the highest scoring team in the country, with an average of 83.4 ppg.

Tip off

We are playing with a higher def intensity right from the start, and so far so good. TXSO shooting just 1-8 FG, along with 4 turn overs.
13:42, Up 15-3

Our turn over count also causing us problems. Fortunately, TXSO's shhoting percentage remains low at 19%.
7:29, Up 22-11

We gave up a lot of fouls and FTs to TXSO, but I'm still satisfied with our tight defense, not allowing easy shots to TXSO (18% FG!). PF David Andrews has been perfect so far, 14 pts, 5-5 FG (3-3 3PT).

Halftime, Up 38-22
TXSO with zero pts in the paint in the 1st half.

Start of 2nd half

TXSO still not scoring on a consistent basis, but their defense is getting a little better
13:51, Up 44-29

TXSO showing some improvement on their shooting, but SG Drew Walker hit a couple of 3PT baskets to keep us in control of this game.
8:15, Up 58-40

TXSO scoring back-to-back 3s, and our lead was suddenly cut to just single digits. I called a timeout to stop their momentum
1:53, Up 63-54

TXSO wasn't able to sustain their rally.

Final Score: Alabama St - 67, Texas Southern - 59
In a match up between 2 high-scoring teams, it turned out to be a defensive battle. Limiting TXSO to more than 20 pts below their average, on their home court, is quite satisfying

Game #85

Postby randy » Wed Oct 29, 2014 2:08 pm

Jan 25, 2003: Prairie View (6-12, 1-6) @ #14 Alabama St (18-0, 7-0)

Pregame Notes
  • PV lost their 1st 6 conference games, giving up more than 80 ppg during that losing streak

Tip off

We're successful almost every time we drive strong to the hoop. We'll shift to favor inside on offense.
13:35, Up 12-5

Our outside shooting still off, so we'll continue to score inside as much as possible.
6:00, Up 21-12

Just 1-10 3PT shooting in the 1st half. Fortunately, our defense is spot on today, limiting PV to just 29% FG while committing 12 turn overs.

Halftime, Up 31-17
More than half of our offense came from inside the paint (20 pts). If we still can't find our range outside, we might as well use heavy inside focus in the 2nd half

Start of 2nd half

Both teams struggling to put pts on the board. We're definitely not out of the woods here, as PV might heat up from the outside later in the game.
13:30, Up 38-25

We're finally hitting some outside shots, including 3 triples, enabling us to build a more comfortable lead.
8:06, Up 50-27

Just enough offense for the remainder of the 2nd half was enough to make this game a blow out. PV just horrible in handling the ball; 22 turn overs as compared to just 5 assists.

Final Score: Prairie View - 31, Alabama St - 64
Personally, I prefer these type of results where we show consistency on defense. We won't always shoot 50% from 3PT (were 4-18 3PT today), but we can still win easily if we play good defense for 40 mins

Postby randy » Wed Oct 29, 2014 8:19 pm

Jan 28, 2003: Mississippi Valley St (12-7, 6-2) @ #14 Alabama St (19-0, 8-0)

Pregame Notes
  • MVST averaging almost 87 ppg in their current 4-game win streak

Tip off

SF Jason Brown with 11 pts. We're having some problems containing MVST's C John Bond (9 pts), who has the ability to take the ball from the outside, and drive to the lane.
12:20, Up 16-14

MVST has been getting a fair share of the offensive rebounds. We must do a better job on the boards.
6:44, Up 29-24

Our offense caught fire in the latter part of the 1st half, partly because of MVST's 14 turn overs.

Halftime, Up 48-39
We still need to contain MVST's advantage on the boards, which got them 14 2nd chance pts. As much as possible, we'll field in a taller lineup in the 2nd half

Start of 2nd half

Relative a better job on the glass at the start of the 2nd half. Backup C Chris Hawkins playing well off the bench today, with 11 pts.
13:53, Up 58-46

MVST continues to turn the ball over, now with a total of 20, as we are slowly pulling away.
7:24, Up 74-54

MVST never got closer than 17 pts the rest of the way. MVST shot decently at 46% FG, but 23 turn overs is just too much for them to have a chance in this game.

Final Score: Mississippi Valley St - 73, Alabama St - 90
We rotated 4 centers on the 4 and 5 spots for the most part of the 2nd half, and that somehow slowed down MVST on their 2nd chance scoring. 2nd consecutive game that SF Jason Brown was judged best player. While SG Joe Lewis is still considered our best offensive player, the performance of Brown would be the "x factor" in determining how far we will go this year.

Feb 1, 2003: #11 Alabama St (20-0, 9-0) @ Jackson St (5-15, 4-5)

Pregame Notes
  • JKST ranks 7th worst in the country in turn overs, at 17.2 topg

Tip off

Right on cue as JKST with 4 early turn overs, which we turned most of them to easy fast break pts
13:23, Up 18-7

We're shooting just 3-12 3PT, but our defense responsible for our lead.
6:28, Up 30-14

JKST finished the 1st half shooting just 27% FG (0-6 3PT), and committing 10 turn overs.

Halftime, Up 44-21
We'll go with favor inside in the 2nd half, as our outside shooting not very consistent today

Start of 2nd half

After not hitting a single 3 in the 2st half, JKST already with 3 triples in the 2nd half. However, they are not making enough stops.
13:31, Up 55-34

We increased the lead to as many as 32. JKST on a last gasp attempt to turn this game around, currently on an 8-0 run.
7:08, Up 68-44

JKST's offense continued to get better in the 2nd half, but it was too late for them.

Final Score: Alabama St - 80, Jackson St - 64
Effort pts as I call them; 18 2nd chance pts, 21 fast break pts, and that's almost half of our entire offensive output today

Feb 4, 2003: Grambling (12-9, 6-4) @ #11 Alabama St (21-0, 10-0)

Pregame Notes
  • Scoring on the road has been a problem for GRAM, averaging less than 60 ppg

Tip off

We haven't taken advantage much of GRAM's 6 turn overs, as we're shooting just 33% FG.
12:11, Up 13-11

Score was knotted at 13 all, and then we went on an 11-0 run, as the turn over problems (9) continue for GRAM
8:12, Up 24-13

Both teams not shooting well. We're 1-12 3PT. The difference in the game was so far is GRAM's 10 turn overs.

Halftime, Up 34-26
We'll shoot more inside, in order to lessen our attempts from 3.

Start of 2nd half

We're still not getting much production on our half court sets, but we're making it up on pts in transition.
13:09, Up 48-35

C Marcus Moore has been our consistent player on offense today (12 pts, 8 rebs), getting baskets mostly from inside. GRAM now with 17 turn overs
7:50, Up 56-41

GRAM hit 6 3PT shots in the last 2 minutes, but we had enough cushion at that point to hang on for the win.

Final Score: Grambling - 65, Alabama St - 75
We had a total of 14 steals and 22 fast break pts, which was more than enough to compensate for our 3-21 3PT shooting performance.

Feb 8, 2003: Alabama A&M (13-9, 8-3) @ #8 Alabama St (22-0, 11-0)

Pregame Notes
  • After losing to us in the conference opener, ALAM won 8 of their next 10 games

Tip off

Good start offensively, something we never had for quite some time.
11:57, Up 26-15

Our 2nd unit wasn't able to sustain the good start we had on offense, but our tight m2m defense have shackled ALAM's shooters
7:13, Up 31-21

SG Joe Lewis, who hasn't surpassed the 20-pt mark for the past 8 games already has 20 in the 1st half.

Halftime, Up 48-35
We shot 53% FG in the 1st half, as compared to ALAM's 38%.

Start of 2nd half

We're not just playing good defense on ALAM (39% FG), but we have given them only 2 off rebounds, preventing their chances for 2nd chance opportunities
11:47, Up 68-45

Our lead didn't go below 20 the rest of the way. SF Jason Brown had a good 2nd half, and SG Drew Walker almost getting a surprising double-double.

Final Score: Alabama A&M - 63, Alabama St - 85

Pregame Notes
  • ALCST likes to slow down the tempo, but they were unsuccessful during our 1st meeting this season (94-68 home win).

Tip off

SG Joe Lewis with 2 3PT shots. Our rebounding has been improving lately, esp on the def glass.
13:53, Up 14-8

Poor perimeter shooting by ALCST, 5-17 FG, 0-5 3PT
7:05, Up 23-12

Our big men contributing their share on offense, by dominating inside the paint. C Marcus Moore and C Robbie Wise, sharing time on the 5 spot, combining for 13 pts.

Halftime, Up 39-21
We'll continue to clog the lane on defense as much as we can, as ALCST has not shown consistency in knocking down their outside shots (2-12 3PT)

Start of 2nd half

We're not exactly lighting up the scoreboard (42% FG), but ALCST's shooting has dropped further to 26%, putting them in a deeper hole.
13:23, Up 48-24

Game was virtually over halfway in the 2nd half. Scoring was somehow padded during garbage time

Final Score: Alabama St - 73, Alcorn St - 54
As in most games we had during conference play, our defense (and rebounding) was able to compensate for our sub-par shooting performance

Game #91

Postby randy » Fri Oct 31, 2014 5:28 am

Feb 15, 2003: Northwestern St (10-14, 5-8) @ #6 Alabama St (24-0, 13-0)

Pregame Notes
  • We survived a low-scoring affair during our 1st meeting (54-45 road win)

Tip off

NWST yet to score, starting the game with 0-8 FG, 3 turn overs.
13:30, Up 15-0

NWST scored their 1st pt, on th FT line, at the 12:04 mark. They had their 1st FG on 9:01 mark. We have 7 off rebounds already
6:56, Up 25-5

NWST showed a little improvement on their offense towards the end of the 1st half. But we have improved our shooting as well, esp the 2nd unit led by SG Drew Walker (10 pts) and C Robbie Wise (8 pts)

Halftime, Up 43-17
We had a huge rebounding comparison in the 1st half, 27 to 12.

Start of 2nd half

We scored our 1st 2 baskets in the 2nd half, after getting offensive rebounds, and our dominance in the boards has been the story most of the game. NWST had a horrible shooting game (3-22 3PT), which made things easier for us to control the paint.

Final Score: Northwestern St - 42, Alabama St - 85
I am pleased with the scoring balance we showed today
