Finding ways to win

Games #103, #104, #105

Nov 29, 2003: Evansville (1-4) @ Alabama St (4-0)

We shot 60% FG in the 1st half (HT: Up 48-33). Not even EVAN's 11 3PT shots could save them, as we took full advantage of their 24 turn overs, en route to 30 fast break pts.

Dec 1, 2003: Alabama St (5-0) @ Mississippi (1-3)

OLEMISS able to come back from a 15-pt deficit to take the lead at the half (HT: Down 38-40), mainly from their outside shooting (7-12 3PT). Our defense couldn't keep up with OLEMISS' fast pace offense in the 2nd half, as they continue making outside shots. WE still have a lot to work on our defense.

Dec 5, 2003: Hawaii (2-4) @ Alabama St (5-1)

Too many fouls given up by both sides in the 1st half, but our 57% FG shooting was the difference (HT: Up 48-33). Our big men took control of the offense in the 2nd half, and we played the brand of tough defense that was absent in our last game, limiting HAW to just 20 2nd half pts

Dec 8, 2003: Alabama St (6-1) @ Pennsylvania (6-2)

PENN with 10 turn overs in the 1st half (HT: Up 39-26). We got into early penalty, as PENN able to keep close much of the 2nd half, until 5 mins remaining when they took over the lead after making back-to-back 3s. It was a see-saw battle for the remainder of the game. SG Joe Lewis scoring 5 straight pts in the last minute was enough to hold off PENN for this close win. We got totally outplayed in the 2nd half; Lewis was just clutch in the end.

Dec 12, 2003: Alabama St (7-1) @ Old Dominion (3-5)

Both teams with 11 turn overs each, which overshadowed that both sides shot more than 50% FG (HT: Up 38-37). Our inability to extend our defense beyond the 3PT line was again exposed today, as OLD dropped a lot of outside bombs to rally after being down by as many as 11 pts midway in the 2nd half. We were in the lead by just 2 pts with 0:40 remaining. An offensive rebound putback by C Marcus Moore gave us an all-important 2 possession lead, as we escape another close one. Not a pretty game to watch, as both teams were horrendous in keeping the ball, combining for 42 turn overs

Bothteams below 40% FG, but UAB's 10 turn overs in the 1st half giving us more possessions (HT: 38-21). We shifted our focus to favor inside in the 2nd half, and our FG% increased, giving UAB not much of a chance in this game.

Game #129 - 2004 NCAA Tournament Round of 64

Postby randy » Tue Nov 04, 2014 2:33 am

Mar 16, 2004: (11) Central Florida (20-11, 10-6) vs (6) #9 Alabama St (28-2, 15-1)

Pregame Notes
  • Key Players
    1. Fr SG Matt Evans (21.8 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 50% 3PT)
    2. So PG Tommie Levy (14.2 ppg, 3.4 apg)
  • How they got here
    1. Finished 2nd Conference USA; 1st Runner Up, CUSA Tournament
  • Strengths
    1. 3PT shooting of Evans, who takes almost 11 #PT attempts per game, and making half of them. Evans is #3 in the nation in 3PT shots made (167).
  • Weaknesses
    1. Due to their fast-paced style of game, UCF gives up 70.1 opp ppg (#277 nat'l). They also give up a lot of FTs to opponents
  • We need to focus our defense on their perimeter shooters

Tip off

UCF's Matt Evans already with 14 pts (4 triples); this kid can shoot!
14:17, Down 14-19

UCF's offense became quiet while SG Matt Evans is resting on the bench with 2 fouls. UCF also in the penalty, and our 9-11 FT shooting helped us back in the game.
7:47, Up 27-23

Evans go stucked at 14 pts, but the other UCF players stepped up in the latter part of the 1st half to keep themselves close.

Halftime, Up 39-33
Our scoring was balanced led by SG Joe Lewis' 10 pts and C Robbie Wise with 7.

Start of 2nd half

SF Jason Brown and C Robbie Wise took over our scoring at the start of the 2nd half. For UCF, it's all been SG Matt Evans and PG Tommie Levy doing all the work in the 2nd half.
12:22, Up 55-45

UCF's starting back court combining for 19 pts in the 2nd half, but getting little support. Our shooting percentage getting better in the 2nd half.
6:18, Up 70-57

Because of our balanced scoring, we were able to rotate our players more often, and our starters (with fresh legs) able to give us a good finishing kick.

Final Score: Central Florida - 69, Alabama St - 85

Game #130 - 2004 NCAA Tournament Round of 32

Postby randy » Tue Nov 04, 2014 9:26 am

Mar 18, 2004: (6) #9 Alabama St (29-2, 15-1) vs (3) #12 Butler (25-6, 14-2)

Pregame Notes
  • Key Players
    1. Sr PG Tobarie Bogans (15.8 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 3.2 apg)
    2. Fr PG Justin Buckner (11.8 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 49% FG)
  • How they got here
    1. Finished 1st Missouri Valley; Lost Quarterfinals, MVC Tournament
    2. (Round 64) Def Western Carolina, 60-47 (Bogans 19 pts, 8 rebs)
  • Strengths
    1. Rebounding: 35.8 rpg (#10 nat'l)
    2. Defense: 56.4 opp ppg (#7 nat'l), 37.1% opp FG (#4 nat'l)
  • Weaknesses
    1. Relies mostly on outside shooting on offense: 44.2% FG, 35.9% 3PT
    2. We have to keep the lane shutdown, so they don't get high percentage shots, and prevent off rebounds

Tip off

SG Joe Lewis with 2 early fouls. We're doing ok on defense and rebounding, but we should handle the ball better (4 turn overs)
12:12, Up 12-11

Backup PG David Meeks shooting a couple of triples, against BUT's exclusive use of the 2-3 zone. BUT is 1-6 3PT.
7:57, Up 18-16

BUT's PG Tobarie Bogans hitting 3 straight triples to take a 7 pt lead. We managed to score the last 6 pts of the 1st half to get ourselves back in this low-scoring game. BUT didn't get called for a foul in the entire 1st half

Halftime, Down 26-27

Start of 2nd half

SF Jason Brown (15 pts) has been our most consistent player so far, as SG Joe Lewis spending more time on the bench with 3 fouls. It's been our turn overs (10) that has prevented us from gaining enough momentum
13:56, Up 39-36

I am losing my patience with the team, as we can't stop throwing the ball away (16 turn overs). We got down by as high as 10 pts earlier. BUT still hasn't been called for a foul, and I letting the refs know that
6:18, Down 48-53

We came to as close as 1 pt, but BUT always seem to have an answer.
2:12, Down 55-60

SG Joe Lewis gets a shot to fall. Down 3. We let BUT take an open 3, and they hit it What a defensive lapse. Down 6. BUT hits another shot. Timeout. Not looking good now.
1:07, Down 57-65

We started shooting 3s. SG Joe Lewis got one to fall, but it was too late. BUT hit 2 FTs to ice the game. BUT had a better game plan, as we didn't get much from our big men today. Season over. Disappointing end once again.
