Game #3

Postby PointGuard » Wed Mar 06, 2013 6:36 pm

Game #3: Nov. 17, 2012; CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners (1-1) at McNeese State Cowboys(2-0)

The Cowboys have 4 players scoring in double figures and a 5th player is just below double figure scoring. The entire team’s red-hot shooting has carried them to two easy victories including a ripping of Western Carolina in the last game.

We hit just 2 of our first 18 shots while McNeese St. hit all 5 of their shots and we fell behind 14-4. The Cowboys hit 62% of their shots throughout the half while we could only manage to get 28% of ours into the hoop. We left the floor down 42-26. Jeremy Jones and Jerell Brown each had 7 points for us.

No matter what defense we applied or the intensity we tried to apply them with, McNeese St. was not to be denied. They never let us get back into the game and cruised to an easy win.

Final Score: McNeese St.-77, CSU Bakersfield-56. CSU Bakersfield season record: 1-2.

Scoring leaders: Brown-20, Jones-9.

Rebound leaders: Settles-9, Jones-5.

Assist leaders: Hill-5.

Player of the Game: McNeese St.’s C Nyah Hedde-16 pts, 9 reb, 4 assists, 2 steals.

Coach’s Pat on the Back Award: Jerell Brown-20 pts, 3 reb, 1 assists, 5 steals.

Other notes: McNeese St. hit 55% of their shots, we hit 33% of our shots. We were out-rebounded 36-31. They scored 32 points in the paint while we could manage just 8.

This was our 3rd game in 5 days with 2 of those on the road. Bad scheduling. Our guys may just have run out of gas.

Huge Upset

Postby PointGuard » Wed Mar 06, 2013 6:37 pm

Our conference’s record thus far is 6-18, but on Nov. 20th, Houston Baptist won their first game against 3 losses by beating #10 Arizona AT Arizona, 64-52. The Huskies simply outplayed the Wildcats in nearly every aspect of the game: FG shooting-49% to 39%; 3-point shooting-56% to 22%; Turnovers: 15 to 16; Assists: 19 to 15; and pulled down the same number of rebounds as Arizona.

(Do you think Coach Erlewine is still coaching Houston Baptist in 2012? Whadaya say, jksander? :D )

The refs have not been vindictive. I've seen little change. I think lots of them would love to see the things I'm proposing enacted, or at least some of them. Catch my interview on that new national sports network from Connecticut. I'm about free speech, consistency of officiating, and more paid training for refs. I may wind up with the refs union supporting me before it's over. Well, as long as they don't read my game reports!

Nobody BUT Erlewine could have taken that team to a win over #10 Arizona!

Game #4: Nov. 21, 2012; CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners (1-2) at Vermont Catamounts (1-1)

PG Roy Cue has socred 24.0 ppg for the Catamounts.

We played strongly throughout the first half, hitting 62% of our shots and forcing the Catamounts to make 14 turnovers while holding their shooting to 38%. We led 43-25 at the break. Jerell Brown’s 9 points led our scoring. We held Roy Cue to just 2 points for Vermont.

Vermont scored the first 10 points of the 2nd half and I burnt through 2 time outs in the first 2-1/2 minutes. Midway through the half they had whittled our lead to 49-45. Finally our offense came to life and we resurrected a double digit lead to win pulling away. We throttled Roy Cue, allowing him to make just 2 of 8 shots and score just 4 points.

Final Score: CSU Bakersfield-70, Vermont-54. CSU Bakersfield season record: 2-2.

Scoring leaders: Brown-20, Johnson-10.

Rebound leaders: Rivera-6, Brown-6.

Assist leaders: Hill-4.

Player of the Game: SG Jerell Brown-20 pts, 6 reb, 1 steal.

Coach’s Pat on the Back Award: C David Johnson-10 pts, 3 reb, 1 assist, 1 steal.

Other notes: Our shooting disintegrated in the first part of the 2nd half but we still hit 49% of our shots for the entire game while holding Vermont’s shooting to 42%. We made 19 turnovers but forced Vermont to make 25 as both teams were sloppy on the floor. The bulk of the foul calls went our way for a change and we made 12 more points that did the Catamounts from the free throw line.

I think at that point in the future it might be his grandson coaching there ... he'll be 90 in 2012, I believe.

19 Tos. I feel your pain. I've resorted to using the Harlem Globetrotters trick basketball on a string in my games.

Game #5

Postby PointGuard » Thu Mar 07, 2013 7:05 pm

Game #5: Nov. 24, 2012; CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners (2-2) at South Florida Bulls (1-2)

We play a Big East team tonight. They’re led by SG Andre Canady’s 15.7 ppg scoring, but PG David Nixon has been deadly coming off the bench, averaging 9.7 ppg in 12 mpg of play and hitting 77% of his FG’s and 86% of his 3’s.

I’m going to start Carlos Holmes in place of Kevin Hill at PG tonight, since Holmes’ A/TO ratio has been much better thus far.

We lead through most of the first half, but South Florida hits a 3 at the buzzer to tie it at the half, 36-36. We hit 55% of our FG attempts. Our leading scorer was Justin Williams with 10 points.

In the 2nd half, South Florida took control, built a lead and held us off.

Final Score: South Florida-81, CSU Bakersfield-69. CSU Bakersfield season record: 2-3.

Scoring leaders: Brown-29, Williams-12, Hill-10.

Rebound leaders: Williams-5, Brown-5.

Assist leaders: Hill-3, Brown-3, Holmes-3.

Player of the Game: South Florida’s SG Andre Canady-17 pts, 4 reb, 4 assists, 4 steals, 2 blocks.

Coach’s Pat on the Back Award: SG Jerell Brown-29 pts, 5 reb, 3 assists, 1 steal.

Other notes: South Florida controlled the boards 33-25. We shot just a little better than they did from the field, but they got 15 more free throw attempts, connecting on 11 more than we did. Starting at PG, Carlos Holmes fizzled offensively tonight.

Game #6

Postby PointGuard » Thu Mar 07, 2013 7:09 pm

Game #6: Nov. 28, 2012; CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners (2-3) at Idaho Vandals (2-4)

Idaho’s only won 1 of 3 games at home, so I’m hoping we can prolong their home court disadvantage.

Idaho didn’t score for 8-1/2 minutes, but during that period we were only able to build an 8-0 lead since we hit just 3 of 13 shots. Shooting was abysmal the entire half. We ended up hitting 24% while Idaho hit 25%. We had a 26-17 rebounding advantage. The top scorer for our team was Jerell Brown who wcored 9 points.

Shooting improved somewhat in the 2nd half for both teams, but our rebounding advantage allowed us to take more FG attempts and again the fouls went more against them than us, so we scored more points from the line. As the half moved into the final few minutes we were able to expand the small lead we held throughout the half and win going away. An ugly game but a road win is a road win.

Final Score: CSU Bakersfield-59, Idaho-45. CSU Bakersfield season record: 3-3.

Scoring leaders: Brown-22.

Rebound leaders: Brown-8, Williams-6, Settles-5.

Assist leaders: Hill-3, Williams-3.

Player of the Game: SG Jerell Brown-22 pts, 8 reb, 2 assists, 2 steals.

Coach’s Pat on the Back Award: SF Justin Williams-4 pts, 6 reb, 3 assists, 3 steals. (OK, OK...you're right...not much to crow about in this game)

Other notes: I’d like to say our defense was outstanding but I think Idaho’s shooting was just very poor. They hit 35%. We weren’t much better finishing by hitting just 36% of our shots. We out-rebounded Idaho 41-31. No Vandal scored in double figures.
