Playing extensive minutes?

Postby randy » Sun Mar 24, 2013 11:33 pm

Aside from the obvious drop in endurance during the game, does playing many minutes on your players have an affect after the game?

High chance of injury? Feels more tired on the next game, especially if it's the next day (e.g. conference tournament)?

In my current season, I have 3 players averaging at least 30 mins. Not by design, but really no choice since I don't even have a reliable 6th man (let alone a deep bench).

Halftime, Up 48-31
Burditt almost outscoring the entire Drake team; he has 30 pts!

Start of 2nd Half

Burditt was "quiet" in the half; scoreless, but it's good to see his team mates stepping up now

11:11, Up 65-38

I don't think there is an after-game effect, either in how they perform in the next game or on the possibility of injury. I think that letting their energy drop to low levels during the game MAY increase the likelihood of injury during that game.

As to next-day games (e.g. tournaments), again I don't think how much they've played in the previous game (or how low their energy dropped) effects how they play the next game (although it would be good if there was a little bit of an effect).

11:05, Up 18-9
USC with 6 turn overs, and only 2 rebounds

Burditt is 1-4 FG. He'll take a rest. Rowles filling up the slack with 10 pts

3:18, Up 35-26
USC hanging in there. I'll bring back Burditt. F Griffin with 10 pts but his 5 turn overs allowing USC the opportunity to keep the score close

Halftime, Down 39-43
Out turn overs and poor perimeter did let us down. Time for Burditt to go to work

Start of 2nd Half

15:51, Down 46-51
F Griffin having a horrible day with 7 turn overs. I'll move Burditt to his natural position at 2, and Thomas will play the 1.

11:17, Down 56-58
USC in the penalty.

USC hits 2 FTs, and another basket. Burditt answers back with 2 pts; he has only 9 pts so far. Rowles with 4 fouls.
9:22, Down 58-63

Jeffries was fouled and able to convert both FTs. We foul again; we're in the penalty. USC was able hit 1 of 2 FT. Jeffries with a big 3 pt shot! We cut it down to 1 with 4 of our starters (including Burditt) on the bench
8:41, Down 63-64

We go full court press. Their C was called for traveling at mid court. Our ball.

F Griffin hits a 3. Up 2.

F Griffin with the steal. He lobs it to Jeffries who scores on the break. Up 4

12/19/95: #25 Sam Houston St (10-0) @ Arizona St (3-5)
AZST is +13 in team prestige

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: man
2. Offense focus: Balanced
3. Key players: SG Quintin Murray, 13.0 ppg, 3 3PTs per game; they also have a 3-man front court rotation averaging almost 25 ppg

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto (mostly Motion) / Balanced
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 7 / 65%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 7
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: Auto / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 9
Tip off (1st Half)

15:03, Up 14-7
AZST with 3 turn overs. Burditt has 8 pts. I'll give early playing time for Jeffries

11:56, Up 24-10
Burditt with 14 pts, but 2 fouls; he'll take a breather.

7:53, Up 32-18
Fouls are 8-2. Rowles also has 2 fouls

3:37, Up 41-26
Both teams shooting more than 60% FG. AZST's 8 turn overs (we have only 2) is the main difference

Halftime, Up 44-28
Foul count is 9-7, but AZST shot only 2-8 FTs. Burditt has 14 pts in only 9 mins, but he got ample support from Thomas with 8

Start of 2nd Half

11:41, Up 58-36
We continue to shoot well, but AZST could not keep pace.

8:43, Up 62-40
Still a lot of time left, but I'll pull out Burditt

6:28, Up 66-42
Turn overs have lessened, but AZST can't convert from long range; they are 0-9 3PT. I'll start clearing the bench
1. SF Justin Jeffries had another good game off the bench. He now is a regular part of my rotation. When he plays the 3, it gives me the opportunity to put Burditt at his natural 2 position.
2. Burditt, Thomas, and Rowles played only 21 mins each.
3. AZST shot only 3-18 3PT; highlighted by SG Quintin Murray's 0-6 from 3, and finishing only with 2 pts (his average is 13)

I don't know if it's coincidence or not, but it seems sometimes like if a guy plays significantly more minutes in a game than he has been averaging, the chance for an in-game injury increases even if his END didnt drop that low. Again that may just be a coincidence or seeing something that isn't there. Sure SEEMS to happen to me a lot though. A guy comes of the bench and is having a great game, and plays starter minutes and then WHAM when the game ends he's injured. I suppose that it IS possible that there is some sort of calculation in the game that makes use of both durability rating and minutes played. I've rarely seen a guy at the end of the bench getting injured.

I agree with you about the last part, PG. I'd love to see some lasting effects of fatigue in tournaments, or even to some degree any time they have less than 2 days off between games. Actually even more than that, I'd like to see some lasting fatigue effects between halves!

MIAOH is +23 in team prestige

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: 2-3 zone
2. Offense focus: Balanced
3. Key players: Inside-outside combo of C Ross Gresham, SF Darius Greene, and SG Derek Murphy, all averaging in double figures
4. In their last game, MIAOH limited Portland to only 38 pts. There were 2 other occasions where their opponents scored less than 50 pts

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto (mostly Motion) / Favor Outside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 7 / 65%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 7
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: Auto / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 9
Tip off (1st Half)

14:34, Up 14-7
Another torrid start for Burditt with 10 pts

10:39, Up 24-14
Rebounding advantage to us at 11-4. We are controlling the quicker pace, which MIAOH can't match

7:07, Up 29-21

3:49, Up 33-27
We're in the penalty, allowing MIAOH to creep in to our lead via FTs. Burditt will come back in the game.

Halftime, Up 44-31
Burditt has 19 pts, scoring 6 of our last 11 pts of the half, to bring the lead back to double digits. MIAOH doing a good job keeping it close on FG% and rebounding, but turn overs (2-8) were the main difference

Start of 2nd Half

15:57, Up 53-36
Thomas and Roles now both in double figures with 10 pts each. We're shooting 7-16 3PT.

11:47, Up 57-45
MIAOH's PF Williams leading their rally with 11 pts

7:53, Up 59-48
Both teams' shooting went cold. Burditt and Thomas still on the bench resting

7:02, Up 59-50
They score gain, and we turn it over. I've seen enough. BUrditt and Thomas are back on the floor

5:35, Up 59-57
We forgot to score, as we were limited to only 2 pts in the last 6+ mins. On our last possession, F Griffin traveled.

After trading misses, MIAOH hits from downtown. Our home crowd is stunned. Burditt only 5 pts in the 2nd half. I was screaming during the time out.
4:46, Down 59-60

On our next play, everyone thought that Burditt will take it strong to the hoop. He opted to pass it to F Griffin who puts up a 3. It's good! We go on 1-2-2 press and we stole their inbound pass. Thomas with the easy deuce, and just like that, we scored 5 quick pts

4:13, Up 64-60

MIAOH misses again. K Griffin comes away with the rebound; his 7th. MIAOH goes to their usual 2-3. F Griffin passes to Burditt on the outside. He buries a 3. Burditt with 27 pts. 8-0 run! Our home crowd is alive again

3:38, Up 67-60

We went 2-3. MIAOH hits a jumper. We'll go man defense exclusively for the rest of the game. Up 5

We miss. They miss. On the ensuing play, F Griffin hits another jumper. He has 8 pts. Lead back to 7

MIAOH's SF Greene connects a 3 despite the outstretched arms of Burditt. Lead down to 4. These Red Hawks won't go away without a fight. I cal time out to settle down the boys. We'll let Burditt take the inbound pass

2:23, Up 69-65

Burditt passes to Rowles who just checked in back to the game. He drive sto the basket and got fouled. 2 FTs. Rowles is 2-2 FT so far in this game

Miss the 1st. Miss the 2nd! MIAOH rebounds

MIAOH's SG Murphy can't get a shot. He passes to Greene who hit a 3 earlier. Greene is double teamed but still puts up a shot. Brick. F Griffin rebounds. We'll slow down the pace to 4

Thomas makes a pass to Burditt. You can see it in his eyes that he is deadset to score on this possession. He takes a shot from 3. Nothing but net! What a big basket. Burditt has 6 3s, as part of his 30 pts.

1:42 , Up 72-65

MIAOH missed. We rebound. And they foul Thomas. Only their 5th team foul. 1:12 to go. We'll slow things even further

MIAOH fouls Thomas but he was able to put up an attempt. Smart play. 2 FTs. Hits both. This is over.

Final score: Miami (OH) - 67, #25 Sam Houston St - 79

Box Score

Other Notes
1. We led by as many as 17 with 5 mins into the 2nd half, and found ourselves down by 1 with less than 5 mins remaining in the game. So that's an 18-point turn around by MIAOH in 10 mins. Good recovery by our team to regain their composure. A good lesson learned here. Next time we are comfortably ahead, I'll remind the guys to remember what happened in this game.
2. Both teams shot well from beyond the arc. We hit 10-22 3 PTs, while MIAOH had 8-18
3. Very balanced scoring for MIAOH, with 7 players scoring between 6 and 11 pts.

1. Primary defense: Man
2. Offense focus: Balanced
3. Key players: SG David Carter, 15.9 ppg
4. SMISS is #6 in the country in FG% at 49.4%

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto (mostly Motion) / Balanced
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 7 / 65%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 7
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: Auto / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 9
Tip off (1st Half)

15:50, Up 12-2
SMISS is 1-5 FG. We grabbed 5 off rebounds already.

12:18, Up 21-6
Thomas with 8 pts

7:31, Up 28-8
SMISS can't seem to get it going, shooting 3-13 FG. F Griffin with 10 pts.

4:57, Up 30-18
SMISS making a run, led by their PG Tom Cook with 10 pts

2:14, Up 30-23
Burditt not a factor offensively; only 2 pts, 1-5 FG

Halftime, Up 37-28
Lead went down to as low as 7. If not for some FTs late in the half, we might have been facing a deficit by now. We're shooting 38%. SMISS' backup guard TOm Cook with 18 pts in 10 mins. Burditt with 5 pts

Start of 2nd Half

15:44, Up 37-36
Our drought continues, shooting 32% FG. I didn't hide my disappointment during the time out

11:51, Up 47-45
SMISS briefly took the lead. Our +5 in FTMs keeping us barely afloat in this game. SMISS SG David Carter now heating up with 16 pts. Thomas and BUrditt to get a brief rest on the bench

6:56, Up 59-51
I will reinsert Burditt and Thomas. Good job by F Griffin (17 pts) and the bench for increasing our lead

3:37, Up 63-56

We just turned the ball over. SMISS traveled. They foul again. 2 FTs for K Griffin. Split his charities. We'll go man defense teh rest of the way; increase defense intensity to 9, and max out def rebounds

3:12, up 64-56

We foul. Our 7th. 1-1 for SMISS. They hit both. I call time out. Burditt to get the pass from the inbound

2:36, Up 64-58

Burditt can't get a shot. Passed to Thomas, who had an open look but can't get it to fall. We knock the ball out of bounce. SMISS ball.

They throw it away. 14 turn overs for SMISS

With 2 secs on the shot clock, Burditt puts up a J. Missed it, but Rowles was there for the off rebound. And Rowles' followup is good. We'll slow down the pace

1:07, Up 66-58

We foul. 1-1 for SMISS. They hit both. We just need to hold on the ball and wait for their foul

0:47, Up 66-60

The foul came. F Griffin hits the 1st but missed the 2nd. Rowles is there again the off board. Rowles is fouled. He splits his charities

0:40, Up 68-60

Other Notes
1. We lead by as many as 22 pts in the first half, and again (just like in our MIAOH game), that evaporated quickly with SMISS taking the lead midway in the 2nd half.
2. You won't win a lot of games shooting 35% FG. Off rebounding plus our +18 advantage in FTAs kept us in the game.
3. SMISS' David Carter scored 18 pts, but their backup PG Tom Cook gave them a boost with 21 pts in only 13 mins of play. Their starting PG, Jon Mardis, had only 4 pts, 1-6 FG, 27 mins. Again, why was Cook not playing in the end game???
