Tip off (1st Half)

11:12, Up 21-13
Off to a fast start; literally as we were running like crazy. 5 turnovers for Lamar. K Griffin with 10 pts

7:59, Up 28-23
Both teams shooting more than 50% FG.

3:49, Up 43-34

Halftime, Up 49-45
Both teams at 55% FG. Lamar is doing it from the outside, with 6-15 3PT; while Rowles and K Griffin dominating the inside with 31 pts combined

Start of 2nd Half

14:41, Up 61-52
K Griffin and Rowles continue to carry our offense, scoring 10 of our 12 pts in the 2nd half.

11:43, Up 65-63
We cooled off on offense; Burditt only 2-13 so far. Lamar's SG Blossom has 12 pts

6:12, Down 69-72
Burditt continues to go cold. K Griffin back on the floor

We turned it over twice, and Lamar made us pay with 2 3-pt plays. Down 9, 69-78. 4:37

Rowles hits a basket. Lamar turned it over. Burdit got foul on the act, but missed both FTs! Down 7. We'll go heavy inside the rest of the way

Both teams trading misses. Burditt even got his shot blocked. Lamr hits another FG. Down 9. 2:30

Rowles answers back; he has 26 pts. Down 7. Another turn over for Lamar. I called time out

1:45, Down 73-80

Burditt hits only his 3rd FG. But Lamar with another perimeter shot. Still down 7, 1:03. Timeout. We need to shoot 3s

Burditt missed a 3. Lamar missed on their end also. On our ensuing play, Burditt hits a 3 this time. Down 4, 0:23. We need to foul intentionally. Thomas fouls. Its our 8th team foul. 1 and 1 for Lamar's PG Victor Wheat; he is 2-2 from the line so far

Wheat hits both. Down 6

Thomas hits a 3. 7 seconds. Down 3. I was yelling the team to foul at the back court, but Lamar effectively passed and run the ball around. Game over. 1st loss of the season
1. We wasted a good game by Rowles and K Griffin; they combined for 49 pts and 19 rebs
2. Lamar plays a similar 3-guard lineup. Their starting 3 guards outplayed ours, 41-26. We should have employed a more perimeter-heavy defense
3. Lamar's SG Donald Blossom was the player of the game, leading a balanced attack with 14 pts and 8 rebs.

Game #23

Postby randy » Mon Jul 15, 2013 12:15 pm

2/2/96: Texas A&M Corpus Christi (9-13, 4-5) @ #13 Sam Houston St (21-1, 8-1)
TAMCC is -5 in team prestige

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: Man
2. Offense focus: Balanced
3. Key players: So SG Tony Driver (14.9 ppg, 41% 3PT), Sr C Reggie Kamouna (7 ppg, 5.7 rpg); both were named 1st Team All Conference last season.
4. We beat TAMCC on the road, 68-60, primarily because of our denial defense on Driver (5 pts) and Kamouna (8 pts, 0 in the 2nd half). Our C Rowles finished with a double-double (25 pts, 10 rebs)

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Balanced
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 7 / 65%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 8
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: Auto / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 9
Tip off (1st Half)

15:20, Up 13-5
Prior to the media timeout, Burditt and Thomas hit back-to-back 3s. K Griffin had a good start with 5 pts. TAMCC's SG Driver continues to struggle against us, starting the game 0-2 FG

11:43, Up 17-15
TAMCC started to hit from the outside

7:39, Up 21-16
TAMCC is shooting better than us (50-42% FG), but we have forced them to commit 9 turnovers so far

4:36, Up 27-20
Out starting back court of F Griffin and Thomas both have 2 fouls. I decided to bring them both to the bench.

Halftime, Up 43-37
What started as an anemic game, both teams picked up their offense in the last 5 minutes of the half. Burditt (18 pts) and TAMCC's Driver (12 pts) had a scoring duel; all of Driver's pts came from 3s (4-7 3PT). K Griffin provided ample support for us (10 pts).

We will focus on m2m defense in the 2nd half, and double team on Driver.

Start of 2nd Half

15:58, Up 52-47
Burditt and K Griffin (35 pts combined) continues to carry our offense, and TAMCC keeps on hitting 3s (8-12 3PT)

11:09, Up 59-53
TAMCC keeping it close. We seem to be doing a good job double teaming Driver (0 pts in 2nd half; Burditt even blocked one of his shots to the delight of our home crowd). But it is TAMCC's PG Dan Johnson (15 pts) who is causing us problems.

7:53, Up 64-55
We manage to keep TAMCC at bay, while Burditt gets a short rest; he's back on the floor now

5:43, Up 70-61
All of my 5 starters are now on the floor. Only Rowles is in foul trouble with 3. This is still a close game, despite TAMCC having +10 on turnovers

2:53, Up 72-61
Burditt broke a scoring drought (almost 3 mins) by both teams, by hitting a jumper; first time we have a double digit lead in this game

On the ensuing play, TAMCC committed yet another turn over. Thomas got the steal, and we are running. However, Thomas miss the layup. But Rowles cleaned up the offensive glass. We reset the play. 2:26, still up by 11

Burditt pulls up a J. He missed, but Rowles with another huge offensive rebound. He takes the shot and got fouled by Kamouna. 2 FTs

Missed both. TAMCC calls a time out. 2:08, still up by 11

TAMCC runs a shuffle offense with their C Kamouna receiving a pass beyond the arc. Rowles forced Kamouna to another turn over. Great defense by Rowles. 1:53

Burditt has the ball. He shoots. Missed, but he got fouled. 2 FTs

Makes the 1st, but missed the 2nd

1:32, Up 73-61

TAMCC has not scored for more than 4 minutes

TAMCC's Driver gets away from Thomas, but he was called for traveling. That probably quashes away any hopes of rally from them

Final score: Texas A&M CC - 63, #13 Sam Houston St - 76

Other Notes
1. Except for that late stretch in the 1st half, we played outstanding defense, forcing TAMCC to commit 27 turn overs! TAMCC's PG Dan Johnson offensive output of 15 pts was negated with his 8 turn overs.
2. TAMCC's SG Tony Driver finished with 16 pts, but only 4 in the 2nd half
3. Keyon Griffin had his 2nd consecutive game scoring 20+ pts. Despite Jamaal Rowles struggling with only 4 pts, his 2 offensive rebounds late in the game were huge.

Game #24

Postby randy » Mon Jul 15, 2013 5:49 pm

2/2/96: #10 Sam Houston St (22-1, 9-1) @ Texas-Arlington (11-12, 4-6)
UTA is -7 in team prestige

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: Man
2. Offense focus: Balanced
3. Key players: Fr C Eli Seabrooks (12.4 ppg, 5.0 rpg), Fr SF Tezale Mixson (10.1 ppg)
4. It was a blowout win for us against UTA in the 1st round, 83-57. We shot 10-19 FG in that game.

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Balanced
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 7 / 65%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 8
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: Auto / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 9
Tip off (1st Half)

15:51, Up 7-6
UTA's Seabrooks was called for a early foul. We have tried to post up Rowles more (4 pts, 2-4 FG); will continue to do so, and see if we can fish for Seabrooks 2nd foul. Changing off focus to Favor Inside

13:44, Up 11-10
Seabrooks picked up his 2nd foul, and he goes to the bench. We will revert back to a balanced offense

7:06, Up 24-21
UTA keeping it close via FTs. We are on the penalty; both starting back court, F Griffin and Thomas, are on the bench with 2 fouls each

4:46, Up 32-21
UTA brought back Seabrooks, and we immediately shifted to Favor Inside. Following Burditt's 3rd 3 of the game, Rowles rewarded us with 5 straight pts including a 3-pt play plus the 3rd foul of Seabrooks.

Halftime, Up 42-35
I wasnt happy with the way we ended the half. Aside from allowing UTA to hit 4 3s in the last 4 mins, we turned the ball over 3 times in a 2 minute span.

Burditt and Rowles each with 13 pts. UTA's Mixson lead them with 8 pts; Seabrooks only played 8 mins due to foul trouble, and has only 3 pts

We wont make any adjustments yet, except for milking the low post for Rowles whenever Seabrooks is on the floor for UTA

Start of 2nd Half

15:20, Up 51-39
Burditt hits a couple of baskets to bring our lead to double digits. F Griffin picked up his 3rd fouls early in the half. UTA's Seabrooks has yet to play in the 2nd half

We'll try shifting to a 1-2-2 zone, as UTA is shooting outside shots more

9:34, Up 62-50
UTA brought back Seabrooks, and they immediately pounded us from the inside. We abandoned the 1-2-2, and went back to m2m (double on Seabrooks). Burditt continues his hot outside shooting, hitting 2 more 3s

Seabrooks picked up his 4th foul at the 9:19 mark; again by isolating a big man (this time, its Chris Doss) against him in the low post

4:56, Up 69-54
Seabrooks just checked in a minute ago, and he was called for hist 5th and final foul, against Burditt who drove it strong to the hoop

UTA had a mini 4-0 run to cut the lead to 11, but Burditt answered back with another FG

2:16, Up 71-58

Both teams in the penalty. A foul was called against us. UTA shot 2 FTs. We went to Bruditt again, and he scored again

1:55, Up 73-60

UTA's Mixson hits a 3, to cut the lead to 10. I called time out. I put in a small lineup (3 guards) for ball handling purposes. Our next play is simple - get the ball to Burditt and let him do his thing. Off pace set to 1 (slowest)

1:31, Up 73-63

We cant get the ball to Burditt. Thomas has it. All we need to do is milk the clock, but Thomas took a quick shot! He missed.

UTA got the ball to Mixson who hits another 3. I call another time out. I was screaming during the huddle

1:05, Up 73-66

UTA immediately fouls F Griffin. Only their 9th team foul, so 1-and-1 situation

F Griffin hits the 1st but missed the 2nd. Rowles grabs the offensive board, but he was called for travelling. UTA ball

0:58, Up 74-66

They would most likely go for another 3, so we'll shift to 1-2-2 zone

We foul. They missed both FTs, but they get the off rebound. They cant get an outside shot. They took a shot from the low post, but missed it. We rebound. They give up another intentional foul. This game is over except for the final score

Final score: #10 Sam Houston St - 78, Texas-Arlington - 69

2. Burditt has been on fire the past 2 games, averaging 30 ppg
3. Doss and Jeffries played well from the bench, and got extended minutes today.

Game #25

Postby randy » Tue Jul 16, 2013 1:07 pm

2/9/96: Texas-San Antonio (13-11, 8-3) @ #10 Sam Houston St (23-1, 10-1)
UTSA is -3 in team prestige

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: 2-3 zone
2. Offense focus: Balanced
3. Key players: So SG Keith Anderson (18.0 ppg - 2nd in the conference behind Burditt, 49% 3PT), Fr C Chris Smith (8.4 ppg, 6.0 rpg)
4. It was close during our last game with UTSA. We were down by 5 with 5 mins to play, but finished the game with a 15-3 run to win 68-61. Burditt had a miserable shooting performance in that game (10 pts, 4-17 FG), but 5 of those pts came during that late run.
Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Balanced
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 7 / 65%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 8
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: M2M / 8 (double on Anderson)
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 9
Tip off (1st Half)

15:55, Tied at 7
Both teams hitting outside shots

11:14, Down 14-16
We have 5 turn overs already, 4 of which were traveling violations.

7:18, Down 18-19
Both teams shooting bricks, after a hot start. I'll bring back Burditt, after a couple of minutes rest

4:59, Down 18-26
UTSA's PJ Reuter (Anderson's backup) rattled in 7 straight pts off the bench. We'll switch to a 1-3-1 zone, to try to generate more turn overs and transition pts. On offense, we'll switch to Favor Inside

Halftime, Down 22-29
The defensive adjustments somehow worked as we gave up only 3 pts in the last 5 mins. However, our offense continues to struggle (38% FG).

We will quicken up the pace in the 2nd half (off pace = 9; def rebounding = 7)

Start of 2nd Half

15:40, Down 27-37
UTA's began to dissect our 1-3-1 zone with success. Reverting back to m2m, and increasing def intensity

11:20, Down 34-44
Fouls beginning to creep up on us. Burditt scored all of our 12 pts in the 2nd half, and I'm not sure if I can afford to give him even a short rest

8:04, Down 38-48
Going back to a balanced offense. Hopefully, our outside shots will fall. My starting lineup are all on the floor. If we have any hope of rallying back, this is the time

Burditt hit 2 3s, sandwiching a couple of UTSA baskets. Thomas just committed his 5th foul. Its our 7th team foul.

UTSA's PJ Reuter hits both. He leads UTSA with 13 pts

5:12, Down 44-54

Both teams missing their shots

Burditt got fouled on the act of shooting. Hits both FTs

4:44, Down 46-54

Rowles got his 4th foul. UTSA missed both FTs. We rebound

Burditt missed a 3. UTSA's Anderson missed as well. We went to the post with K Griffin. Missed it as well

UTSA turned the ball over. On our next possession, we also turned it over. I think Im going to lose a couple of hair strands in this game

2:16, Down 46-54

We'll go Favor Outside, and look for 3s

Burditt gets a steal. Passed to Jeffries. Jeffries lays it in. Can't convert but got fouled. 2 FTs. Hits both

1:55, Down 48-54

UTSA scores an inside bucket

Burditt missed a 3, but K Griffin with the put back

1:16, Down 50-56

Turn over for UTSA. I called a time out. 1:09. Down 6. We'll run a pick and roll, with F Griffin and Burditt

We run the play. Burditt missed a 3. But another off rebound by K Griffin. We reset, and this time Burditt hits a 3. 0:24 left. Down 3. We have to foul

But our defense broke down. UTSA pushed the ball and gets an easy layup. 0:15, Down 5. We missed a desperation 3.

Final score: Texas-San Antonio - 58, #10 Sam Houston St - 53
1. Burditt took 26 out of the team's 54 FGAs. Can't blame him though, as the rest of his teammates shot 8-28 FG (29%).
2. It was UTSA's balanced attack that helped them.. Chris Smith had 11 pts and 10 rebs. Anderson had a quiet night with 8 pts
3. We need to lessen our dependence on 3s. We shot 6-22 from 3 today (27%)

Game #26

Postby randy » Tue Jul 16, 2013 2:15 pm

2/11/96
Charles Burditt was named as a semifinalist for the Norton award

2/13/96: Texas St (14-11, 6-6) @ #10 Sam Houston St (23-2, 10-2)
TEXST is -6 in team prestige

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: M2M
2. Offense focus: Inside
3. Key players: Fr C Kenyon Richardson (11.0 ppg), Fr C Jean Goodwin (12.8 ppg, 5.8 rpg)
4. We won our last meeting with them, 74-60, because we were effective with our 2-3 zone.

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Balanced
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 7 / 65%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 8
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 2-3 zone / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 9
Tip off (1st Half)

15:57, Up 14-3
Burditt continues his torrid scoring spree, opening up with 10 pts including 2 3s. TEXST's big men Richardson and Goodwin were reduced to jump shooters, as they can't operate inside our 2-3 zone

11:45, Up 27-9
Burditt with 15 pts (6-7 FG); early rest for him in this 1st half.

5:29, Up 39-15
With Burditt on the bench, the other players took on the offensive load. K Griffin has 11 pts, while F Griffin is having a good all around game with 7 pts, 6 rebs, and 5 asts

Halftime, Up 50-20
The players have responded well after playing poorly during our last game. This is almost as perfect game as I could have imagined. 14 asts out of 17 FGMs, 29% opp FG, 12-13 FTs, only 4 turn overs. To top it all, Burditt only played 9 mins.

Will play the starters a few mins to start the 2nd half, but the bench will get extended minutes today

Start of 2nd Half

14:26, Up 60-25
It took us almost 3 mins before we scored our 1st pts in the 2nd half. But TEXST continues to shot poorly from the outside. Thomas converted a couple of 3s, to further extend our lead

11:50, Up 62-25
Took Burditt out. The only thing unsettled is whether F Griffin can get a triple double; he's 7-9-8 so far.

7:35, Up 76-28
With a good interior pass to Doss leading to a basket, F Griffin registered a triple double! He leaves the game with 13 pts, 10 rebs, 10 asts. All starters are now resting on the bench

Final score: Texas St - 42, #10 Sam Houston St - 80

Other Notes
1. Overshadowed by F Griffin's great all around game, were the equally impressive performance of the other players. K Griffin teared up TEXST's interior defense plus adding 6 off rebs, and the significant contributions of Thomas and Jeffries
2. TEXST's Goodwin and Richardson combined for only 9 pts. Richardson was 0-6 FG.
3. A pattern that I can see is if either one of our big man (Rowles, K Griffin) has a good offensive game in the low post, it opens up our outside shooters and shoot a high percentage from beyond the arc. F Griffin, Thomas, and Burditt combined for 8-13 3PT.

Postby randy » Tue Jul 16, 2013 6:15 pm

With UTSA's loss to TEXST earlier in the day, we have wrap up our 3rd straight Southland Conference regular season title!

2/16/96: #10 Sam Houston St (24-2, 11-2) @ Central Arkansas (14-12, 8-5)
UCA is -7 in team prestige

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: M2M
2. Offense focus: Balanced
3. Key players: Sr SF Damian Dixon (15.9 ppg)
4. The 2 highest scoring teams in the conference actually both had poor offensive performance during the 1st meeting. We won 69-58. Burditt shot 9-22 FG, while UCA's Dixon managing only 4-15. We don't expect Dixon to have that kind of performance again, esp playing at home. It's a tricky matchup for us, as UCA starts with 3 athletic SFs on their lineup

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Balanced
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 7 / 65%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 8
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: M2M / 8 (double on Dixon)
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 9
Tip off (1st Half)

14:36, Up 13-4
We went on a 9-0 run to break a 4-4 tie. Fouls are going against us though, at 5-1. Thomas and Rowles both with 2 fouls, and I was forced to use the bench early

11:04, Up 17-14
F Griffin also called for his 2nd foul. My bench is going to be tested here. Burditt and UCA's Dixon almost cancelling out each other, with 7 and 6 pts respectively

8:04, Up 22-14
So far, the bench have responded well. Cook/Slater/Jeffries has combined for 9 pts, while Doss doing a good job on the boards with 7 rebs already

3:43, Up 35-17
After putting Burditt back on the floor, he scored our last 7 pts. UCA's home crowd is stunned, considering 3 of our starters are on the bench saddled with foul trouble. Doss continues his great game with 11 rebs.

Halftime, Up 52-27
What a shooting performance by Burditt - 24 pts, 10-12 FG, 4-5 3PT. As a team, we shot 69% from the field!

Start of 2nd Half

15:55, Up 56-37
UCA's offense starting to get some life, with Dixon scoring 8 of their 10 pts in the 2nd half. Burditt cooled down, going 1-4 FG in the half so far. Thomas picked up foul #3

11:06, Up 67-43
UCA's Dixon got his 3rd 3 of the half, but Burditt regained his shooting touch, who now has 33 pts

7:46, Up 68-50
Almost 4 mins without a FG for us. I gave Burditt a rest. He may need to go back in case our lead dwindles further

3:21, Up 77-57
This game is over. No need for Burditt to come back. I pulled out the rest of my starters

Final score: #10 Sam Houston St - 88, Central Arkansas - 72

Other Notes
1. Burditt could have gone scoring 45 to 50 pts, if I left him on the floor. If he brings this kind of performance in the NCAA tournament, he could be a top 5 pick.
2. Our bench contributed 35 pts today! Hopefully, that gives them confidence heading to the tournament games.
3. It was UCA's Dixon turn to lit up the scoreboard in the 2nd half. He finished with 25 pts. Unfortunately for him, the game was long decided when he scored majority of those points.
4. It was raining 3s today. UCA shot 14-32, while we connected on 8-12
