[An aside] I played Game #27 FOUR times...and New Jersey Tech beat us each and every time by 9-17 points. The DDSCB2 program had some sort of hiccup and wouldn't save after each of the first 3 times I played the game and I had to close thus losing Game #27 results. I seriously expected to lose this association, but it finally successfully saved after the 4th try.

The first time, we dropped behind by about 20 in the 2nd half and ALL the foul calls (100%) had been against us the entire game. I ended up getting 2 technicals and earning an early departure to the locker room.

The next 2 times I stayed home (due to a new problem with Sean) and let my 1st assistant handle the reins (i.e., I simmed both attempts). In both we had our rallies but the Highlanders rallies were always more sustained than ours.

And you know how attempt #4 came out (I played out that attempt).

On attempts 2 thru 4, I was sort of afraid the Roadrunners would win and negate what really happened in attempt #1....but the Highlanders just are a better team than us when playing us on their own court (actually they beat us earlier on OUR court as well). :(

Big West Conference Tournament, Day 1

Postby PointGuard » Wed Apr 24, 2013 3:57 pm

WE WIN!!!! (The coin toss with Houston Baptist, that is, and are rewarded with the 3rd seed.)

Utah Valley (7-20, 2-12) vs North Dakota (12-2, 19-8)—North Dakota controls the game defensively (holding Utah Valley’s shooting to 30%) and dominates the boards (44-33). Shortly after the beginning of the game, they take the lead and never relinquish it. North Dakota successfully works the ball inside to hammer Utah Valley in the paint. After falling far behind, Utah Valley resorts to lobbing up 3’s but can’t hit enough of them. Herb Dahl leads North Dakota with 26 points and Daman Lang pulls down 10 boards. Matt Rosen’s 15 points are high for Utah Valley. Final: North Dakota-69, Utah Valley-51.

Seattle (10-17, 4-10) vs New Jersey Tech (18-9, 10-4)—The first half is close with New Jersey Tech moving out on top at the end to lead 33-29. The Highlanders spurt ahead in the 2nd half and open as much as a 22 point lead, before relaxing toward the end when the game was well in hand. New Jersey Tech hit 18 of 34 from 3-point distance. Andy Boardman scored 24 for New Jersey Tech and also pulled down 6 rebounds and dished out 7 assists. J.R. Allen added 11 rebounds for the Highlanders. The Redhawks were led by Phil Higgins’ 18 points. Final: New Jersey Tech-80, Seattle-67.

Chicago St. (12-15, 7-7) vs Houston Baptist (14-13, 8-6)—Houston Baptist came to play. They never trailed in this contest forging a 36-27 halftime lead and then opening a 24 point lead in the 2nd half. Offensively they dominated inside and hit 56% of their shots while holding Chicago State to 39% shooting. Chicago State turned the ball over 20 times while Houston Baptist had just 11 turnovers. Houston Baptist had 4 starters score in double figures, led by Lennox Jepsen’s 16 points. Craig Hawkins added 14 points and 8 rebounds. Chicago State’s [i]Brooks Erskin scored 14. Final: Houston Baptist-77, Chicago State-58.

Game #28: Mar. 1, 2013; TX Pan American Broncos (7-20, 5-9) vs CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners (14-13, 8-6)

I’d like to say this should be an easy win for us, but since we split our games against the Broncos this year, obviously there’s no room for cockiness. During practice, I pound into my players’ heads that they can NOT look ahead, but have to focus fully on the Broncos.

We maintained a small lead throughout most of the first half but could never break the Broncos. We were hitting our shots (59%) but TX Pan American was also shooting well (46%). We expanded the lead to 8 in the last few minutes to leave the floor with a 42-34 lead. Mike Settles dominated inside, scoring 13 points and grabbing 4 of our 15 rebounds.

Offensively we were like the waves of an ocean in the 2nd half, continually rolling in over the beach. We steadily built our lead to as much as 17 points before the refs (and my too early deployment of the far end of the bench) allowed the Broncos to close in a rush at the end of the game.

Final Score: CSU Bakersfield-82, TX Pan American-79. CSU Bakersfield season record: 15-13.

Scoring leaders: Settles-17, Brown-16, Kamara-16, Hill-8.

Rebound leaders: Brown-6, Settles-5, Hill-5.

Assist leaders: Five players with 2 each.

Player of the Game: SG Jerell Brown-16 pts, 6 reb, 1 assist, 1 steal.

Coach’s Pat on the Back Award: C Mike Settles-17 pts, 5 reb, 2 assists.

Other notes: We hit 56% of our shots, but TX Pan American canned 50% of theirs. We held a 29-26 advantage in rebounds and made 13 turnovers compared to the Broncos 18. The referees skewered us with fouls in the 2nd half…they called 24 on us throughout the game giving the Broncos 16 more free throw attempts that we got.

Tonight we had a good balanced attack. I was particularly impressed with the play by both Mike Settles and Rashun Kamara (and personally would have picked either of them as Player of the Game rather than Jerell Brown). Settles hit on 8 of 9 shots and Kamara knocked down 8 of 10 shots. Both played their hearts out.

Big West Conference Tournament, Day 2

Postby PointGuard » Wed Apr 24, 2013 4:00 pm

Houston Baptist (15-13) vs North Dakota (20-8)—The first half was close throughout but Houston Baptist came out of it with a 28-25 lead in a defensive battle. The Huskies moved out to a 10 point lead in the 2nd half and then held on to upset the highly favored Fighting Sioux. Houston Baptist hit 50% of their shots and held a 16-11 turnover advantage. Lennox Jepson scored 16 for Houston Baptist. Herb Dahl was the top scorer for North Dakota with 17 points. Final: Houston Baptist-72, North Dakota-65.

Game #29: Mar. 2, 2013; CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners (15-13, 8-6) vs New Jersey Tech Highlanders (19-9, 10-4)

New Jersey Tech’s 2-3 zone has stymied us in our previous meetings. We hit 32% and 39% of our shots in those two games. I’m switching up my starting lineup to get players with who I think can better exploit the 2-3 zone. So Rashun Kamara will start at PG rather than Kevin Hill, Jeremy Jones will start at SF rather than Justin Williams, and David Johnson will start at PF rather than Johnny Chase. Jerell Brown’s shooting percentage has been low against the Highlanders, so if he’s not connecting, Andrew Powers may see more time than usual at SG.

We turn the ball over 4 times in the first 5 minutes of play, but the Highlanders come out flat and we hit our shots to forge ahead 16-9 with 12:22 to play. With 4:31 remaining in the half we have rallied to a 33-18 lead based on 58% shooting and a 19-8 rebounding advantage. New Jersey Tech is hitting just 31% of their shots and is 1 for 10 from beyond the arc. The Highlanders woke up at that point and started hitting shots plus forcing us into turnovers to cut our lead to 39-36 at the half. Jerell Brown led our scoring with 19 points.

After going 1 of 10 on 3’s at the beginning of the game, the Highlanders hit 8 of their next 12 and we trailed 50-47 with 13:25 to play. We abandoned our zone defense and went to m-2-m. The second half story: Highlanders shoot well, we don’t; we turn the ball over, they don’t. Result: A recipe for defeat.

Final Score: New Jersey Tech-80, CSU Bakersfield-69. CSU Bakersfield season record: 15-14.

Scoring leaders: Brown-30, Settles-10, Williams-8.

Rebound leaders: Brown-10, Settles-9, Johnson-6.

Assist leaders: Kamara-9, Holmes-6.

Player of the Game: New Jersey Tech’s PG Andy Boardman-20 pts, 3 reb, 5 assists, 2 steals.

Coach’s Pat on the Back Award: SG Jerell Brown-30 pts, 10 reb, 1 assist, 3 steals.

Other notes: Our shooting tailed off badly in the 2nd half so we finished by hitting 43% while New Jersey Tech popped in 46% of their shots. We held a 39-29 rebounding advantage but that was offset by our making 17 turnovers to just 9 for the Highlanders.

Jerell Brown’s double-double (30 points, 10 rebounds) went for naught.

Houston Baptist (16-13, 8-6) vs New Jersey Tech (20-9, 10-4)—New Jersey Tech took the lead and ended the first half ahead, 37-30. They moved out to an 18 point lead in the 2nd half and cruised to the championship with a stingy defense. Adam McLean scored 19 for New Jersey Tech while Chris Myers led Houston Baptist with 13. Final: New Jersey Tech-71, Houston Baptist-59.

Norton Award

Postby PointGuard » Wed Apr 24, 2013 4:04 pm

While still nursing our wounds caused by our ouster from the Great West Tournament, we get the exciting news that Jerell Brown has been named a finalist for the Norton Award.

Other Jerell Brown news:

--Jerell was named Great West Player of the Week 6 of the 14 weeks this season. He also was named Great West Freshman of the Week all 14 weeks this season. He was named Freshman of the Week nationally once this season.

--He ended the season with the following stats: 20.9 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 1.4 apg, 2.0 spg, .842 STP%, 4.1 TOFC.

--We also get the good news that he is not going to declare for the NBA Draft, so we will have him back next year.

NCAA Selection Show

Postby PointGuard » Thu Apr 25, 2013 4:46 pm

Number 1 Seeds: Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Florida, Cincinnati

New Jersey Tech: 13th Seed in San Antonio Region playing Boston College in Round 1

North Dakota: not selected for NIT or CBI--I was hoping they'd make on or the other of those since they had such a good year until round 2 of the conference tournament
