NCAA Tournament

Postby PointGuard » Thu Apr 25, 2013 4:50 pm

Round 1:

New Jersey Tech vs Boston College—Boston College gradually built a lead in the first half finishing ahead, 37-28. They then expanded their lead to 22 points in the 2nd half and never looked back. BC outshot the Highlanders 46% to 37%. They also forced New Jersey Tech to make twice as many turnovers (20 to 10). Dan Snyder led Boston College’s with 17 points and 15 rebounds. Earl Cliff had 19 points and J.R. Allen had 10 rebounds for New Jersey Tech. Final: Boston College-72, New Jersey Tech-51.

Semifinals:

#11 Syracuse-70, #8 Georgia-67
#1 Florida-72, #5 Utah-61

Championship:
#11 Syracuse-58, Florida-52

Obviously not a good year for #1 seeds, but a #11 seeded team winning the big enchilada? You don't see that very often.

Farmer Sean

Postby PointGuard » Thu Apr 25, 2013 4:54 pm

Sean likes working on the farm, particularly when he gets to work with cattle. He’s not out of the woods on the alcohol front though. He’s had a couple relapses. After this happens a couple times, Roy Olson, the farmer and his boss, lays down the law to Sean. He tells Sean in no uncertain terms that if he wants to work on his farm and with his livestock, there will be “no coming to work reeking of alcohol and alcohol can not affect Sean’s work”. This seems to make an impression on Sean. While he doesn’t stop drinking all together, he cuts back significantly and makes sure he doesn’t drink before going out to the farm.

I’m still amazed that Sean, who probably never was on a farm before being hired by Roy Olson, likes it so well. I can only imagine what his friends back in Philly would think. Mom and Pop are thrilled that he’s found something that has finally triggered a fire within him.

Now the big problem is getting Sean to take off his boots BEFORE he comes into the house.

End of year activities

Postby PointGuard » Thu Apr 25, 2013 4:59 pm

The only goal set by the administration was to win at least 10 games…so succeeded. (BFD! )

While I’m not looking to leave CSU Bakersfield, no school was looking at me for a head coaching position either.

I decide to let my 1st Assistant Stephen Osbourne go. His player development skills just aren’t sufficient to justify his salary. I also fire my 3rd assistant Gerrod Hedde in an attempt to get a better recruiter. I promote my 2nd assistant Rodney Willis to 1st assistant and hire 58 yr old Scott Roberts as my 2nd assistant who will be in charge of player development. I then hire 64 yr old Larry McIntyre as my 3rd assistant. He’ll be my recruiter.

I meet with the board and request that they approve a plan for facilities improvement. They don’t go for it. I’m not surprised.

Season 2012-2013 is OVER.

Season 2013-2014 Begins

Postby PointGuard » Fri Apr 26, 2013 4:57 pm

2011-2012 seemed like a year when we made some significant improvements over previous years. 2012-2013 felt like a filler season to me since we made slight improvements to set a foundation for the future, but were unable to do what was necessary at the end of the year.

Unlike last year, we have a number of changes in the makeup of the team for the 2013-2014 season. Also I believe expectations within the school’s administration, the student body, and local fans are beginning to change. They will expect us to make an big upward step this year. This is evidenced by the administration’s goals changing from “win more than 10 games” to “finish in the top 3 in the conference”. Not an overly aggressive goal, but certainly a step up from the first two years.

The challenge for 2013-2014 will be: can we produce now that we are bringing in players who have strong individual skills?

Team and Conference Prestige

Postby PointGuard » Fri Apr 26, 2013 4:58 pm

We lost one fewer game and lost 2 fewer games than the previous year, but finished a little lower in the conference (3rd vs 2nd), didn’t win the conference tournament and therefore didn’t return to post-season tournament play. So my expectation was that our almost invisible prestige of 3 would be unchanged or could even drop. To my complete surprise, our prestige increased from 3 to 5.

I’m not sure what the conference prestige was for 2012-2013, but it was 7 for 2011-2012. For 2013-2014 it’s now risen all the way to 8.
