Mar 2:

Brad Nielsen and Bradley having another loud argument after the game. I don't know what it's about and I don't care. We don't need this kind of unnecessary disruption in the middle of the tournament. I talk to both and tell them if they don't want to knock off the nonsense they can stay back at the hotel tomorrow. They were both quick to apologize and seemed sincere. I hope that's the end of it.

Mar 3: Big South Tourney (4) Gardner-Webb(17-11)v(1)Presbyterian(20-8)

Postby CoachC » Thu Mar 28, 2013 11:42 am

No one needs to tell us the kind of effort is needed to take these guys down. We did play very well against them in each of our 2 regular season games. The first time we faced them at their place and we lost by 1 91-90. The second time at our place we were able to win 75-64. We were able to win that second time with balanced scoring and a big game from Godzilla despite playing without Sheals. It was a coming out party for O'Conner of sorts, and he has been playing well ever since.
In the win their big guy Crider and their talented freshman Lyles both got their points, but we were able to keep everyone else in check, and that's what it will take again. They are far to good at the inside/outside game to shut either one of those guys down completely, but we have to make Crider work for his points, and get out on the perimeter on Lyles as best as we can. To win we probably need to hold them under 40 pts combined.

I also hope that the remaining host fans, who saw their team fall to VMI in the first game will pull for us because the Presbyterian contingent will be loud.

O'Conner draws the 2nd foul on Crider at 10:23 which is big. Myers and Feeley both have 2 for us though, which leaves us vulnerable at the point.

They gamble bringing Crider back in and he picks up his 3rd personal with 2:38 to go in the half

I'm not sure we are capable of playing much better than we did in the first half. We shot 52% while holding their hi scoring offense to 35%. We hold Crider and Lyles to 7 points combined.

At the half we lead 43-27.

Crider picks up his 4th at 7:13 and we are doing what we need to do, still leading by 15.

They never get closer than 12 in the second half, and their fans sit on their hands the whole game, stunned. Evans and Kerr stay in Lyle's jersey all night and he gets just 3 shots off for 6 points. Godzilla thoroughly outplayed Crider all game and held him to just 6 points on 8 shots. Their 2 guard Jackson did get 21 points, mostly from downtown, but you have to give up something, and in all fairness we had switched Woods to guarding their point much of the game to keep Myers and Finney from further foul trouble.

Woods has 17 points, 7 rebs, 3 stls.
Myers did not have a great game, but added 12.
O'Conner had another double double with 15 pts and 11 rebounds going up against the best center in our league.
Sheals added 8 points
Moore had 8 rebs a steal and a block off the bench and was magnificent on the defensive end.
Evans and Kerr had the kind of game that doesn't show up much in the box score, but their defense was huge. They did still combine for 12 points and 3 steals.
Porter and Feeley both played well of the bench, too.

The Blue Hose never knew what truck ran them over.

For the 2nd straight year we knock of the 1 seed and advance to the championship game, this time on the heels of a 5 game winning streak, and confidence is high.

Final:
G-W 75 Presbyterian 58

2 seed VMI knocked off the host team Coastal Carolina in the earlier game 72-66

Once again the injury bug hits, this time to Gregg Porter who jammed his finger in last nights game and won't be available in the championship game.

Mar 5: Big South Tourney: (4)Gardner-Webb(18-11)v(2)VMI(20-9)

Postby CoachC » Thu Mar 28, 2013 1:50 pm

Our only regular season against the Keydets this year, I was forced to watch on television from the locker room because of my suspension. After leading at halftime, we were unable to stop them at all in the 2nd half and wound up losing 73-66 at home.

Most of this team was with us when we went to the championship game without Woods and put up a valiant battle in a losing effort. Able to play this time around, Woodsie is fired up and in no way wants his senior season to end, nor does Myers. Porter who played big in the championship game last year, is frustrated at having to sit this one out, but is in better spirits than we've seen him all season. He doesn't want it all to end here either... he wants one more chance to get on the court and redeem himself.

We are going to start with a 1-3-1 zone in this one. Their balanced scoring has proven to difficult for us to contain man to man.

With Presbyterian and Coastal Carolina both eliminated, the crowd for the championship game will be rather small. We and VMI both have brought about the same number of fans to the game, we can only hope that everyone else that uses their tickets for the game is rooting for the underdog.

Our zone defense is very good in the first half, and despite Woods picking up his 2nd personal just after the 8 minute time out and sitting out the rest of the half we lead 33-27 at intermission. We get to the freethrow line 15 times, which helps overcome our own cold (40%) shooting from the field. We have to keep playing good defense in the second half, take care of the ball a bit better (TOs even at 8), and keep Woods from getting his 3rd foul so we can generate some offensive rhythm.

at 11:57 we still lead 44-37 and our still playing good defense, but continue to turn it over too much against their pressure. (turnovers even at 13, but what can I say.. I'm greedy!)

At 6:44, the lead has been cut to two as the turnovers continue. Although our zone defense has been good overall, their pointguard has been making a living from 3 lately, and the referees apparently under some mandate from the league office have joined the side of evil. It's been all i can do to avoid a technical. At one point Kevin actually shoves the blanket in my mouth.

We decide to go man out of the media timeout. At 3:35, Woods picks up his 4th foul, yet another phantom call. We still lead by two, but they are in the double bonus and at the line. I tell them to dig deep. It'll take a massive effort to pull this out going 5 on 8. O'Conner is fouled in the act at 1:57 (apparently the officials forgot which end of the court they were on) and hits both freethrows to make it a 4 point game. They miss and Godzilla rebounds at 1:35. Henry hits a 12 foot jumper to make it a 6 point lead with 1:20. They hit a pair of freethrows at 1:08. Woods hits a pair of freethrows at :56 to put it back to a pure 2 possession game. They use their last time out and hit a jumper at :46 to cut it to 2. They foul, but we are not yet in the bonus. I call timeout and get our freethrowers in and to set up our inbounds strategy against pressure. They foul Henry at :36. He sinks both freethrows to put it back to 6. They hit a three at :26 to cut the lead in half. Myers is fouled at :23, still in one and one. He makes both, back to two possession lead. They can't get off a quick shot and finally hit a 3 with :01. We inbound and cover up.. GAME!!!!

The celebration is wild! Woods is overcome with emotion. I'm overcome with emotion.

Each of the 6 seniors climb the ladder first to snip the net with Woods first, of course. It's going to take a some time for this to all sink in to everyone about what we've just done.

Woods has 22 pts and 3 stls.
O'Conner continues his journey to manhood with 17 pts, 9 rebs, and 2 stls.
Myers has 9 pts, 4 asts.
and Evans who didn't take a shot in the game has 6 asts and 4 steals.

A great championship run. I'm speechless.

O'Conner is named tournament MVP.

final:

Big South Champion Runnin' Bulldogs 70, VMI 67

Had em all along.

After the game I'm informed that not only will this be G-W's first post-season appearance of any kind, but our 19 wins ties a school record in DI. Apparently, quite a few years ago, in their last season as a member of the Atlantic Sun conference, G-W managed to win the regular season title with 19 wins, but at that time the A-Sun had no conference tourney, and no automatic qualifier to the NCAA and their season ended there. It feels good to be part of history.

Mar 5: A day later and I still am in disbelief. Our final RPI is 83, which should be good enough to keep us out of a play-in game, but you never know. Presbyterian and VMI finish with RPIs of 61 and 74 respectively and should both be playing somewhere.

Mar 11: Selection Sunday. A mammoth big sceen TV is set up in the student union. A crowd of about 500 jams the room, more than we had at some of our games in our first season. We learn that a beat reporter from the Shelby newspaper has been assigned to cover us in the NCAA tournament. Furthermore, the local radio station is rumored to be in negotiations with the university to broadcast our games beginning next year. Our AD has probably never looked less glum in all his life. Instead of looking like he just lost his best friend, he only looks like his cat just got run over by a car. Big improvement for him.

We watch the selection show with baited breath...

First come the 16 seed play-in games. We aren't in them. Big cheers from the crowd!

Duke is #1 overall in the east, and will play one of the teams playing in. Some groans of disappointment from the crowd....

Then immediatley there after.. we see our name 15 seed in the East Regional against 2 seed UCLA. At least we didn't get a 16 seed! Thunderous applause from the crowd. Some crazy person yells, "We get Duke in the regional final!" and it breaks some of the tension. We watch the rest of the show. UNC also in the east as 5 seed.. that brings up a mixture of boos and cheers.

UCONN is 1 seed in the North.
Kansas is the 1 seed in the South.

Grand Valley St. a team we played twice last year as a DII school gets a 7 seed in the South in their first year in DI with an impressive 26-4 record. Suddenly I don't feel so bad about losing to them twice last season.

Louisville is the number 1 seed in the West. Central Arkansas, a team we beat in the non-conference season is in as a 14 seed. Indiana St. a team we beat at home earlier this year is in as a 12 seed.. those wins certainly helped our RPI.

NC St 7 seed in the west.. more boos.
