“Do you remember Osei Burns” asked one of my assistant coaches, a definitive yes was my response. Burns was an elite recruit out of New Jersey a few years ago, seen him play at the camps and loved his game but I also knew at the time we could not get a player of his caliber to play at UD. Last I heard he went to Arizona, started for two seasons and left the school because of academics.
The coach brought his name up because he learned Osei wanted to transfer to an east coast school to be closer to his family and with our recent success we should make a play to get him into our school. Talent wise I would love to have Osei at UD, but the academics were an issue. For starters I pride myself on the fact ALL of my players go to class and ALL of them get college degrees. Two UD has very good academic standards so getting him admitted should he decide to come will be a process in itself. I decided I would look into it provided I did my homework.
My first call was to the staff at Arizona to find out everything I needed to know, in terms of personality they all said Osei was extremely coachable who didn’t give them any attitude issues. Osei was a smart kid, with his high school grades and SAT scores he could have got into any school in the country. Work ethic wise all of the coaches said he was a hard worker so with all of that I wondered why he had academic problems.
In the words of an Arizona assistant “Osei loves the social life” was the reason for his academic issues, the kid started missing some classes and forgetting to turn in assignments due to him enjoying the night life too much. The University of Arizona has a beautiful campus, it has warm weather all year, and traveling to San Diego, Las Vegas, Los Angeles are all options being in Arizona. I was assured that there weren’t any drug or legal issues, the kid just love going out.
Weighing the pros and cons I decided to fully recruit Osei and try to get him to come to UD. Delaware isn’t exactly known for its social scene, and his family would be in close proximity so I felt we could control his social scene to an extent. The next step in the process would be meeting with Osei and his family to sell them on Osei coming to UD.
My key sell point to Osei Burns and his family was solely academic; the importance of education and the fact Osei would get his college degree if he came to UD. I produced the annual report of the graduation rates of the NCAA Tournament teams, at the top of the list, UD. Osei is a great basketball player and that will take care of itself so if he decided to come we would have plenty of time to discuss basketball. Osei and his family seemed to be impressed, I was told he would look at a few more schools and then make a decision.
A week after the Burns visit, my family and myself were at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, Virginia on a family vacation when my cell phone starting ringing. The area code was a New Jersey which meant it was either Mike Stallings or Osei Burns, seeing how it was a number I didn’t recognize that eliminated Stallings. Osei called to tell me he was going to accept our scholarship offer, once all the paper work was finished he was admitted into UD and immediately was placed in summer classes.
