Game #31 - NCAA Round 1

Postby randy » Sat Nov 09, 2013 9:50 pm

3/16/98: (12) Fairfield (20-11, 10-6) vs (5) #9 Sam Houston St (28-2, 13-1)

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: M2M
2. Offense focus: Outside
3. Key players: So SG Ron Walters (18.3 ppg - #1 MAAC, 41% 3PT, 141 3s made - #9 country)
4. Fairfield finished 2nd in the MAAC regular season, but they won the conference tournament beating top-seeded Wagner in the finals. They pass the ball well (#1 in asts in MAAC, #15 in the country) and take care of the ball (#2 fewest turnovers in MAAC)

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Favor Inside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 8 / 35%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 8
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 1-2-2 / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 7

We want to take away their perimeter game, and control the def glass. We'll also press more, to disrupt their setup game

C Glendon Jackson is still injured (90%) but suited up. I will Jackson with PF Rashif McCoy in the starting lineup
Tip off (1st Half)

15:43, Up 9-0
SG Keith Field (6 pts) aggressive driving to the basket. More importantly, he was able to fish 2 fouls from FAIR's Ron Walters (0 pts, 0-4 FG) who is now on the bench

11:56, Up 17-2
FAIR is 0-13 FG, and would find it more difficult to score without Walters on the floor. PF Rashif McCoy justifying his selection in the starting lineup with 5 pts, 4 rebs

7:56, Up 22-4
FAIR got their 1st FG on the 9:30 mark

3:48, Up 26-4

Halftime, Up 30-10
FAIR is 3-30 FG (10%), and only 1 ast (they average 16+ per game). Forgettable 1st half for FAIR's SG Ron Walters, 0 pts, 0-6 FG, in only 7 mins of action due to foul trouble

The only concern I had with the team is the 6 off rebs that we allowed for FAIR. Somehow expected with the absence of C Glendon Jackson. We'll increase def rebounding to 9 in the 2nd half

SG Field Field leads all scorers with 10 pts.

Start of 2nd Half

12:59, Up 48-17
SG Keith Field got his 3rd foul early in the 2nd half, but PG Ray Smith (6 pts) took over the scoring cudgels. PF Rashif McCoy continues his good game, 13 pts, 6 rebs.

7:48, Up 56-24

3:17, Up 64-27
I pull out my key players. Slow down the game

Final score: Fairfield - 33, Sam Houston St - 68

Box Score

Post Game Notes
1. The 1-2-2 defense certainly worked today.
2. PF Rashif McCoy outstanding job filling in for the starting 5 spot. It allowed me to sit out C Glendon Jackson for the game
3. FAIR's Ron Walters finished with a measly 5 pts (13 below his average), 2-14 FG

Game #32 - NCAA Round 2

Postby randy » Sat Nov 09, 2013 11:32 pm

3/18/98: (5) #9 Sam Houston St (29-2, 13-1) vs (4) #2 UNLV (28-4, 14-2)

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: M2M
2. Offense focus: Balanced (fast)
3. Key players:
- Sr SG Brad Willie (19.7 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 49% FG, 1-time All American, Norton finalist this year, #22 in his recruiting class)
- Jr SG Colin Norwood (11.1 ppg, 3.3 apg, #22 in his recruiting class, 1-time All-Conference)
- Jr(R) SF Mike Ransom (7.8 ppg, 5.8 rpg, #35 in his recruiting class)
4. UNLV's success can be attributed to their defense. They allow only 42% opp FG (#1 in MWC), and force their opponents to 18.8 turn overs per game (2 in the country)
5. How they got here:
- Won MWC regular season and conference tournament
- Defeated Delaware in Round 1, 60-45 (Willie - 22 pts, 5 rebs)

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Favor Inside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 8 / 35%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 8
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 2-3 / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 7

Unlike most volume-scoring SGs, UNLV's Brad Willie finds more success driving to the lane. He shoots only 38% 3PT, so we'll take our chances in forcing him to shoot from outside. In fact, none of their perimeter players shoot more than 40% 3PT

Also, one of UNLV's key big men PF Brendon Devone (9.6 ppg, 4.6 rpg, #40 recruiting class) is injured and won't play. This will force UNLV to go outside even more.

C Glendon Jackson still slightly injured but 96%. He will start
Tip off (1st Half)

14:07, Up 12-11
C Glendon Jackson with 6 pts, including 2 put backs. SG Keith Field also with 6 pts. UNLV's Brad Willie (5 pts) hitting 2 jumpers, including a 3

11:45, Down 14-15
UNLV has very good m2m defenders, and the have started to clamp down on our penetration

7:37, Up 25-17
Only SG Keith Field (17 pts) and C Glendon Jackson (8 pts) comprise our offense. Fortunately for us, Field is hitting his outside shots (including a 3)

4:31, Up 31-17
I gave SG Keith Field a few minutes of rest. We extended the lead by going to C Glendon Jackson. UNLV's Brad Willie missed his last 3 shots (all from outside)

1:55, Up 35-23
I called a timeout to stop whatever little momentum UNLV will gain

Halftime, Up 37-26
Jackson and Field combined: 33 pts, 16-25 FG; rest of team: 4 pts, 1-13 FG. SF Jafar Newby and PF Linehan Johnson are scoreless

UNLV's Brad Willie limited to 7 pts, 1-4 3PT, 3 tos

UNLV with 12 turnovers; we have 8

Start of 2nd Half

14:12, Up 45-37
UNLV mounting a rally, hitting back-to-back 3s. They also tightened their interior defense, making it difficult even for C Glendon Jackson to score inside

11:58, Up 50-39
PF Linehan Johnson has struggled against UNLV's interior defense. He was 0-7 FG until he hits his 1st shot plus a foul. he converted the bonus FT

9:42, Up 56-41
PF Linehan Johnson scoring our last 9 pts. Normally he's a player who doesn't show emotions on the court, but he pumped his fist after he hit his last FG.

3:36, Up 68-53
Just when UNLV is starting to mount another rally, C Glendon Jackson (20 pts) rediscovered his form and scored his first 6 pts of the 2nd half

3:22, Up 70-53
Both teams in the penalty. We'll start slowing down the game and chew some time in the clock. Max out on def rebounding

Final score: Sam Houston St - 74, UNLV - 58

Box Score
Field 27, 5, 6, 2 stls (*)

TO: -8 (11-19)

Fast Break: +10 (12-2)
Post Game Notes
1. SG Keith Field (37 minutes) and C Glendon Jackson (30 minutes, still slightly injured) were absolute workhorses today. PF Linehan Johnson, whose shots were blocked at least 5 times by the UNLV frontcourt, did not give up and found the right time to contribute
2. I am absolutely delighted that the players followed our game plan for the entire 40 minutes. We forced UNLV to shoot from the outside (25 3-pt attempts out of 54 total FGAs). Majority of those outside attempts were contested shots
3. SF Mike Ransom led UNLV with 12 pts (4-7 FG). Guards Brad Willie and Colin Norwood with 10 each, but shot a combined 7-31 FG (4-20 3PT).

Game #33 - Regional Semi Final (Sweet 16)

Postby randy » Sun Nov 10, 2013 9:21 am

3/23/98: (5) #9 Sam Houston St (30-2, 13-1) vs (1) #4 North Carolina St (27-4, 16-2)

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: 1-3-1 zone
2. Offense focus: Inside (fast)
3. Key players:
- Sr C Derion Dondon (13.5 ppg, 8.6 rpg - #1 ACC, 2.5 bpg - #2 Nat'l, 51% FG, 1-time All Conf, #43 class ranking)
- Sr SG Bryan King (12.9 ppg, 3.2 apg, 1-time All Conf)
- Jr C/F Brandon Brooks (9.1 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 1.2 bpg, 50% FG, #19 class ranking)
- So SF Mike Person (9.0 ppg, 3.6 spg - #1 Nat'l, 1-time Conf DPOY, 1-time All Conf, #26 class ranking)
4. NC State is as complete team as you can have:
- balanced scoring from all positions
- fast tempo + off efficiency = 73.8 ppg (#14 Nat'l)
- does not turn the ball over = 11.3 topg (#3 fewest Nat'l)
- rebounding on both ends = 36 rpg (#15 Nat'l)
- they force you to take bad shots and turn the ball = 56.3 opp ppg (#4 Nat'l), 17.9 opp topg (#6 Nat'l)
The only possible weakness they have is their depth at front court.
5. How they got here:
- Won ACC regular season; lost conference tournament final to UNC
- Defeated IUPUI in Round 1, 67-45 (Dondon - 17 pts, 8 rebs)
- Defeated Duquesne in ROund 2, 92-56 (PG Kyle Bratton - 25 pts, 5 asts)

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Favor Inside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 8 / 35%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 9
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 2-3 / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 7

Reserve G Ahmad Locklier is their only player who shoots >40% 3PT, and he averages only 13 mpg. We'll take our chances again from letting them shoot from the outside.

It's going to be tough to score in the paint against their defense, but we'll still dump the ball in post early the game, hoping their big men gets into foul trouble and test their bench
Tip off (1st Half)

15:36, Up 8-7
All our pts are from low post, C Glendon Jackson and PF Linehan Johnson with 4 each. NCST's C Derion Dondon showing his shooting touch, converting 2 medium-range jumpers

11:47, Up 17-13
Our perimeter guys providing some much-needed outside shooting. We're controlling the def glass, so no 2nd chance opportunities for NCST. NCST is 3-8 3PT, but we'll stick with the 2-3 zone for now

4:46, Up 25-19
Two reserve guards have been the most productive payers so far: PG Ray Smith (8 pts, 2 asts) and NCST's Ahmad Locklier (7 pts)

3:37, Up 27-19
SG Ray Smith (10 pts) hits another running jumper to give us our biggest lead

Halftime, Up 33-26
Baskets by Jackson and Johnson towards the end of the half allowed us to hang on to the lead. Our 25-10 advantage in rebounding is the big difference in the game.

NCST's outside shooting have soured; after hitting 3-8, they were only 1-8 since

PG Ray Smith leads us with 10 pts, and C Glendon Jackson always steady with 9 pts, 9 rebs. NCST's reserve PG Ahmad Locklier having a big game for them, with 10 pts, 2-4 3PT. Starting PG Kyle Bratton, who scored 25 pts in their Round 2 win against Duquesne, is scoreless after the 1st half

A big concern is our 10 turnovers. Fortunately, it has only lead to 3 fast break pts by NCST, but we still have to take care of the ball in the 2nd half.

Start of 2nd Half

17:25, Up 35-33
NCST off to a fast start, capped by PG Kyle Bratton's 1st FG (a 3). I called timeout to break momentum

15:19, Up 40-35
Clutch baskets by SF Angelo Wallace and a 3 by SG Keith Field. NCST's PG Kyle Bratton beginning to heat up with 5 pts, all in the 2nd half

13:35, Up 42-41
PG Kyle Bratton (8 pts) and SG Bryan King (10 pts) each hitting a 3, to cut our lead to 1. We'll shift to 1-2-2 zone

11:55, Up 46-41
2 FGs by PF Linehan Johnson (12 pts), and a long 2 by SG Keith Field (9 pts). We're hanging in there

11:02, Up 50-43
SG Keith Field (13 pts) beginning to take over, connecting on another jumper, and then 2 more FTs on the next possession off PG Kyle Bratton's 3rd foul

9:58, Up 50-48
NCST capitalized on our 2 successive turnovers, and very quickly it's just a 2 pt game

5:45, Up 56-53
We're doing good on our perimeter defense with the 1-2-2, but NCST began to shift their offense towards their big men. PG Ray Smith (12 pts) just scored his 1st basket of the 2nd half, and another jumper by SG Keith Field (15 pts). Field is exhausted and I'll give him a short rest

4:40, Up 56-55
NCST hits 2 FTs. We've given up a number of off rebounds after the shift to 1-2-2 zone. I have a decision to make. Remain with the 1-2-2 or go back 2-3 (but risk getting us burned by their shooters)? I decided to stay with the 1-2-2, but max out on def rebounding. I also have no choice but to bring back SG Keith Field (1 min rest in the 2nd half)

SAM: Immediately, SG Keith Field (17 pts) goes back to work and gets another basket.

4:49, Up 58-55

NCST: SF Jafar Newby steals the ball. Newby a non-factor on offense (2 pts, 1-6 FG) so far, but has stepped up on defense with 5 steals already
SAM: Newby gets the ball. He dribbles. He pops from top of the key. It's good! What a time for Newby to get only his 2nd basket of the game (4 pts, 2-7 FG). NCST calls a timeout

4:06, Up 60-55

During the huddle, I told the team to just relax and just continue what we're doing on defense (1-2-2 zone)

NCST: Another steal! This time by C Glendon Jackson
SAM: PG Ray Smith sets up a play. Pass to PF Linehan Johnson. Johnson is left open for 7 feet. Johnson (14 pts, 6 rebs) banks one in for the score. Good court vision by Smith (6 asts) to find the open man

3:34, Up 62-55

NCST. They go to PG Ahmad Locklier at the right corner. Locklier lets go of a 3. He had a good look but couldn't convert. We get the defensive board. Locklier limited to only 1 pt in the 2nd half, after scoring 10 in the 1st
SAM: More than 3 minutes; still a long way to go. PG Ray Smith pass to SF Jafar Newby. Newby with his new-found confidence, begins to make his move off the dribble. He stops and goes for a step-back jumper. He hits nothing but the bottom of the net! Newby (6 pts, 3-8 FG) converting his last 2 FGs. We're on an 8-0 run in the last 1:30. I shouted instructions to press all the time

3:02, Up 64-55

NCST: PG Ahmed Locklier, despite missing his attempt in their previous possession, hoists up another long 3. He scores on a bank-shot triple!. What a clutch basket

2:49, Up 64-58

SAM: PG Ray Smith finds the open PF Linehan Johnson. Same play and same result. Johnson (16 pts) scores again. Smith (7 asts) has done a great job running the offense under extreme pressure

2:33, Up 66-58

NCST: We took off some precious game clock with our full court press. 17 secs left on the shot clock. PG Ahmed Locklier with the ball again. He dribbles. Goes up for the jumpshot, and scores. Locklier (16 pts) scoring NCST's last 5 pts

2:14, Up 66-60

SAM: We need to keep being aggressive on offense. PG Ray Smith to SG Keith Field. Field drives and shoots the ball. Miss. But C Glendon Jackson with the offensive rebound. He follows up and scores! Jackson has a "quiet" double-double, 11 pts, 11 rebs

1:53, Up 68-60

NCST: We press again. Reserve SF David Silva drives to hoop. Shot was off but there was a foul on C Glendon Jackson. Silva to shoot 2 FTs. He calmly hits both. I called a timeout

1:37, Up 68-62

My players need a breather; all 5 players on the floor have played at least 30 minutes each. Just hang in there

SAM: SF Jafar Newby gets the pass. Newby shoots. Brick. NCST gets the def board. Up 6, 1:19
NCST: They went for a quick 2, instead of a 3. PF Brandon Brooks puts up a shot. Miss. PF Linehan Johnson (6 pts) with a big defensive rebound. I was signalling from the bench that we slow down.

1:05, Up 68-62

SAM: SG Keith Field trying to dump a pass to C Glendon Jackson. Stolen by NCST. Its our 17th turn over. NCST calls a timeout

0:49, Up 68-62

I replace SG Keith Field with PG Devor Holmes, to us a 2 PG lineup for ball handling purposes. I reminded the team to box out and not let CST get the off rebound

NCST: We commit a foul. Smart foul as it is only our 6th team foul. 0:41 left. They inbound. They go to SF Mike Person. Person with a very long 3. He hits it. It is just a 1 possession ball game.
SAM: We inbound, gets the ball in our front court, and called a timeout

0:30, Up 68-65

I reinserted SG Keith Field. Given the time remaining, they surely will give up fouls. Problem for NCST, is that they only have 1 team foul

The crowd are on the edge of their seats.

SAM: NCST commits their 2nd team foul. We inbound again. PG Ray Smith about to get fouled, but he got away. He was left open from about 15 feet. He shoots the jumper. He scores! What a bold move by Smith (14 pts). NCST calls a timeout

0:26, Up 70-65

NCST: SG Bryan King got fouled. Our 7th team foul. King for a 1-and-1. King hits both. I shouted instructions that we don't need to shoot

0:22, Up 70-67

NCST has to give up a succession of fouls

Foul (3rd team). 0:14
Foul (4th team). 0:13
Foul (5th team). 0:09
Foul (6th team). 0:08
Foul (penalty)

SAM: PG Ray Smith to shoot a 1-and-1. If he gets the 1st, the game is over. Pressure-packed FTs for Smith. He goes to the line.

He hits the 1st. Yes!!!!
He also hits the 2nd

0:07, Up 72-67

NCST got a meaningless uncontested layup for the last shot of the game

We're in to the elite 8! What a game. Lots of heroic efforts

Final score: Sam Houston St - 72, NC State - 69

Post Game Notes
1. Our performance today can be likened to a track relay team. Someone else takes over the game, pass the "baton" to another player, and let the other guy weave his magic. Smith, Field, Newby, and Johnson all had their magical moments in the game; while Jackson remains consistent
2. Except for NCST's 2 clutch 3s in the end, our adjustment to use 1-2-2 zone middle of the game, helped us limit their production from the perimeter. NCST finished with 9-29 3PT (31%). Our rebounding advantage helped offset the number of turnovers we had in this game
3. NCST's Ahmed Locklier was big off the bench with 16 pts. C Derion Dondon finished with 12 pts, 5 rebs, 2 blks

Game #34 - Regional Finals (Elite 8)

Postby randy » Sun Nov 10, 2013 4:26 pm

3/25/98: (2) #7 Indiana (29-5, 14-4) vs (5) #9 Sam Houston St (31-2, 13-1)

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: 1-3-1 zone
2. Offense focus: Inside
3. Key players:
- Jr C JD Harris (14.1 ppg, 9.5 rpg - #8 Nat'l, 2.2 bpg - #3 Nat'l, 53% FG, 2-time All Conf, Norton finalist this year, #34 class ranking)
- Sr SG Rodney Clark (13.2 ppg, 53% 3PT)
- So PF Rod White (11.2 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 2.2 spg - #3 Big 10, 54% FG, #19 class ranking)
- Jr PG Torris West (10.0 ppg, 4.2 apg - #2 Big 10, 44% 3PT, #50 class ranking)
4. Indiana has guards who can shoot a high percentage from beyond the arc, but they seldom take 3s (only 6.9 3PApg - last in Big 10). They prefer to pound the ball inside to Harris and White. This allows them to capitalize on their strengths:
- efficient offense = 49.6% FG (#5 Nat'l)
- get 2nd opportunities = 36.7% OR (#2 Nat'l)
- get to the FT line = 18.1 FTApg (#1 Big 10)
- plus, they force a lot opp turn overs = 18.0 opp topg (#3 Nat'l)
5. How they got here:
- Finished 3rd Big 10 regular season; lost conference tournament semi-final to Michigan
- Defeated Holy Cross in Round 1, 84-59 (Harris - 16 pts, 11 rebs; IND: 40 inside pts)
- Defeated Pittsburgh in Round 2, 74-67 (Clark - 21 pts; IND 28 FTAs)
- Defeated #3 Houston in Sweet 16, 72-69 (Clark - 20 pts; IND 25 FTAs)

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Favor Inside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 8 / 35%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 9
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 2-3 / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 7

It's a match-up between 2 teams of almost similar style of play. Whichever team who can force the other out of their comfort zone, has a big chance to advance to the Final 4.

We'll clog the lane on defense, getting def rebounds is an absolute must, and stay away from foul trouble; IND has won their last 2 games, both close ones, by shooting 20+ FTAs.

We'll be in trouble if IND's guards convert their 3s, and/or we commit too many turnovers.
Tip off (1st Half)

15:16, Up 9-4
IND going almost exclusively to C JD Harris (1-4 FGA). We connected on 3 outside shots, 2 by SG Keith Field and 1 by SF Angelo Wallace.

10:45, Up 22-17
Opposing SGs on a scoring duel: SG Keith Field (10 pts, 2-2 3PT) and IND's SG Rodney Clark (9 pts, 2-3 FG). IND already 6-6 FTs.

6:37, Up 24-22

2:04, Up 34-31
We were able to cling on to the lead, while both C Glendon Jackson and SG Keith Field are resting on the bench. Both are back on the floor now

Halftime, Up 38-35
SG Keith Field leading our offense, with 14 pts. PG Ray Smith played only 7 mins because of foul trouble, but PG Davor Holmes able to fill in nicely with 6 pts.

IND's bench has kept them in the game, contributing almost half their output (17 pts). Only SG Rodney Clark (12 pts) and C JD Harris (6 pts) scored among their starters.

Both teams took care of the ball well; we only had 2 turnovers while IND has 5.

Pace is very slow, as IND almost always consume the entire shot clock before they attempt a shot. Both teams only with 2 fast break pts each.

IND has gotten to the FT line more, shooting 9-11; we're 2-5 FT

Start of 2nd Half

15:05, Up 42-41
We committed more turn overs in the 1st 5 mins of the 2nd half (4 already) than in the entire 1st half, and allowed easy pts for IND on the break. This was the focus of our huddle during the timeout

10:59, Up 53-45
SG Keith Field (21 pts, 3-4 3PT) contributed 7 pts in the current 11-4 run.

8:59, Up 57-47
Inside baskets by PF Rashif McCoy and C Glendon Jackson, and we're up by double digits. Jackson nearing another double-double, 12 pts, 8 rebs

5:51, Up 63-53
SG Keith Field (25 pts) hitting 2 more outside jumpers, to keep IND at bay. I'll give Field a brief rest

4:21, Up 63-53
Both teams trading misses. I put SG Keith Field back in. This is the final push! We'll max out def rebounding, and press all the time

SAM: SG Keith Field get's the ball at the 3 pt line. Gets closer. Jump shot is off the mark. IND gets the rebound. 4:05 left
IND: PG Kyle Underwood gets a screen from C JD Harris. He shoots. Miss. We get the rebound. 3:48 left
SAM: SG Keith Field gets the ball again. Field drives. A little strong. But SF Jafar Newby gets the offensive rebound. Newby shoots. Newby scores (6 pts, 3-9 FG).

3:32, Up 65-53

IND: PG Kyle Underwood takes a quick shot. Underwood scores (9 pts).

3:18, Up 65-55

SAM: PG Ray Smith's pass was stolen
IND: SF Issac Collier gets the pass on the break. Collier missed a wide open dunk. We get the rebound. 3:01 left
SAM: SG Keith Field with the ball. He gets a screen. Field fires a shot. Field buries the J! Field (27 pts) pumps his chest after that basket

2:46, Up 67-55

IND: PG Kyle Underwood called for traveling. I call a timeout

2:38, Up 67-55

We'll slow things down

SAM: SF Jafar Newby gets the pass. Newby lets one go. Newby with the kiss off the glass and scores (8 pts).

2:20. Up 69-55

IND: Miss by C JD Harris
SAM: We pass the ball around to waste some time. PG Ray Smith drives. Smith can't convert. Off rebound by C Glendon Jackson and was fouled on the follow up. 2 FTs. Jackson splits his charities (13 pts, 10 rebs)

1:44, Up 70-55

I replaced the entire 5 on the floor.

Final 4! Unbelievable.

Post Game Notes
1. SG Keith Field has averaged 23.7 ppg over the past 3 tournament games, all against top-10 ranked teams. In just 1 week, he has become a household name. A lot of players contributed, but it's safe to say that Field carried the team on his shoulders towards the Final 4.
2. IND was only 1 pt behind at the 15 minute mark, Field took over, and we protected our double-digit lead the rest of the way
3. IND only took 5 3s (making 2), which allowed us to continue with our 2-3 zone and limiting their post up and drive-in plays. IND finished with 11-15 FT, but did not attempt a single FT over the last 15 minutes
4. IND's SG Rodney Clark (14 pts, 4-9 FG) and and JD Harris (13 pts, 7 rebs, 5-15 FG) were relatively quiet in the 2nd half. PG Torris West and PF Rod White combined for only 7 pts, which is 14 pts below their combined average.

Game #35 - National Semi Finals (Final Four)

Postby randy » Sun Nov 10, 2013 9:18 pm

4/1/98: (5) #24 Villanova (25-10, 9-7) vs (5) #9 Sam Houston St (32-2, 13-1)

Scouting Report

1. Primary defense: (no scouting report? bug?)
2. Offense focus:
3. Key players:
- Fr C Kyle Leep (13.5 ppg, 8.9 rpg, 54% FG)
- Jr SF Jonte Harris (10.2 ppg, 5.0 rpg, #47 class ranking)
- So SG Steve Grace (10.7 ppg)
Tough to ascertain Villanova's style of play with no scouting report. Looks like though they are a "balanced" and deliberate (slow-paced) team. Their wing players, Harris and Grace, both shoots less than 32% 3PT. Leading scorer Leap can score both inside and outside.
4. Villanova is not a high-scoring team (65 ppg - 3rd last in Big East, bottom 40 Nat'l), nor an efficient one (41.2% FG - 3rd last in Big East, bottom 40 Nat'l). But they have 2 qualities that can win them a championship:
- Defense: 56 opp ppg and 38% opp FG (both #1 Big East, and #4 Nat'l)
- Rebounding: 36 rpg (#1 Big East, #13 Nat'l)
5. How they got here:
- Finished 8th Big East regular season; lost conference tournament quarter-final to Louisville
- Defeated Oregon in Round 1, 77-67 (Leep - 18 pts, 22 rebs; NOVA: 17 2nd chance pts, 18 off rebs)
- Defeated Arkansas-Little Rock in Round 2, 66-58 (PG Jamaal Hanley - 17 pts, 5 asts; NOVA: +15 rebs)
- Defeated Connecticut in Sweet 16, 60-40 (Grace - 15 pts; NOVA 28% opp FG)
- Defeated #10 Gonzaga in Elite 8, 64-39 (Leep - 18 pts, 11 rebs; NOVA: 22% opp FG)

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Favor Inside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 8 / 35%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 9
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 2-3 / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 7

Villanova may not have the big names that our previous opponents do, but they are scary good in defense. In their past 2 games, they limited opponents to 23% FG (they limited Gonzaga to 39 pts, just a little over half of their 72 ppg average)

In case they play m2m defense, we need to take high percentage shots in the inside. Despite Villanova's outstanding overall defense, they don't have a dominant shot-blocking center

We will challenge them to hit their outside shots. As a team, they averaged only 28% 3PT during the season. SF Jonte Harris shooting only 16% 3PT in the tournament so far; SG Steve Grace slightly better at 22%
Tip off (1st Half)

14:24, Up 15-4
Good execution on offense so far. Except from a 3 by Field, all our pts were either from post up or drive to the basket. C Kyle Leep is the only scorer for NOVA.

11:52, Up 23-12
NOVA using more 2-3 zone now. Doesn't matter to C Glendon Jackson (10 pts, 5-5 FG) as he has repeatedly ripped NOVA's interior defense. SG Keith Field (9 pts) continues his excellent tournament scoring run.

5:00, Up 35-14
We've created a confusing problem in which NOVA's defense having difficulty dealing. If they pack the shaded too much, SG Keith Field (13 pts, 5-9 FG) will hit them with his zone-busting jumper. If they sag a little, C Glendon Jackson (14 pts, 7-8 FG) can take his man for an inside bucket

Halftime, Up 43-21
SF Jafar Newby (10 pts) scored our last 8 pts in the 1st half, to join C Glendon Jackson (14 pts) and SG Keith Field in double figure scoring

C Kyle Leep the only consistent player on NOVA's offense, with 8 pts. His team mates can't hit outside shots, going 1-12 3PT.

Despite all the misses, NOVA only had 2 off rebs and zero 2nd chance pts. Team is doing a good job taking away NOVA's strengths. 20 more minutes. No 2nd half meltdown, and we're heading to the national title game!

Start of 2nd Half

15:18, Up 51-28
NOVA connecting on 2 3s to start the half, but we're just trading baskets. I reminded the team not to be complacent though

12:32, Up 61-31
SG Keith Field with a double-double, 17 pts, 10 rebs

10:37, Up 66-34

6:32, Up 74-39
I pull out SG Keith Field (22 pts), and rest him for the big game ahead. The rest of the key players will follow. Slow down the game

Final score: Villanova - 53, Sam Houston St - 80

Box Score
Field 22, 10, 2, 2 blks
Jackson 18, 8, 0, 9-11 FG

Wallace 8, 4, 3

Post Game Notes
1. SG Keith Field showing that he is a multi-dimensional player; not only he grabbed 10 rebs, he also played good perimeter defense
2. We took care of the ball well today, despite NOVA's frequent use of pressure defense. Once the break is press, NOVA does not have elite shot blockers on their lineup, and we capitalized on that weakness
3. NOVA shot better from the outside in the 2nd half, and got better contributions from everyone. Too late they didn't do that early. C Kyle Leep top scored for them with 11 pts, 7 rebs. SF Jonte Harris had a forgettable game, 8 pts, 3-17 FG.
