Game #31; Mar. 16, 2015: (#10 seed) Marshall Thundering Herd (20-11) vs #20 (#7 seed) CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners (25-5)
Marshall finished 4th in Conference USA then lost in the championship game of the conference tournament. They primarily employ a 2-3 zone defense. SG Nic Haginas is averaging 15.1 ppg. He shoots well from all over the court.
The lead juggled back and forth in the initial stages of the 1st half as both teams shot well, but our defense then throttled them so we could gain an advantage. We held the lead throughout the final 10 minutes but Marshall never gave it and kept things close by hitting 5 of 10 threes. We hit 43% of our shots against Marshall’s 37%. We forced 10 turnovers by Marshall and only made 4 ourselves. The score at the half was 35-30 in our favor. Randy Durham led our scoring with 7 points. Nic Haginas scored 11 for Marshall.
Nothing much changed in the first 8 minutes in the 2nd half, but with the score 45-39, Jerell Brown was charged with his 4th foul at the 12:08 mark. The refs nicked us with our 7th team foul at 11:39…Marshall had been charged with none at that point. With 10 minutes to play, Marshall tied the score at 45-45. With 5 minutes to play, Marshall hit a jumper from the key to go ahead 53-51.
We trailed 61-59 with 1:29 to play. We tied the game at 0:49 on a jumper by Darius Dunn. Marshall missed their shot, we rebounded and I called a time out with 31 seconds to play and 30 seconds on the shot clock, telling my team to hold onto the ball so we could call a time out with less than 10 seconds to play to set up a final shot. During the ensuing time out, we set up a pick and roll. The play didn’t work, but Jerell Brown took the ball on the right of the key, cut over to the foul line, turned and sank the 15 foot jumper with 1 second on the clock.
Final Score: CSU Bakersfield-63, Marshall-61. CSU Bakersfield season record: 26-5.
Scoring leaders: Jrl Brown-15, Dunn-10, Durham-9, Saunders-8.
Rebound leaders: Jrl Brown-6, Lyde-5, Bryson-5, Durham-5.
Assist leaders: Durham-5, Jrl Brown-4, Bryson-3.
Player of the Game: SG Jerell Brown-15 pts, 6 reb, 4 assists, 2 steals.
Coach’s Pat on the Back Award: PG Randy Durham-9 pts, 5 reb, 5 assists, 1 block.
Other notes: Revealing how close the game was, we hit 42% and Marshall hit 41% of our shots. They held a 38-27 rebounding advantage, but we offset that with an 18-9 turnover advantage. With his shot right before the buzzer, Jerell Brown showed how he can deliver in crunch time. Rather than jump for joy when he hit the basket, I could only exhale a sigh of relief.
But pulling out this first victory for CSU Bakersfield in an NCAA Tournament was a huge deal for our team, school and fans. Playing in Syracuse has made it difficult for many of our fans to be there, but the TV ratings for our game were high in Bakersfield.
Nic Haginas hit 6 of 9 shots for 17 points for Marshall.
