COL's outside shooters went cold before the end of the half. But they still shot a good 5-12 3 PT (44%) in the 1st half

3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 9
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 2-3 / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 9

Previous Meetings
1/20/00 (Home): Won 81-64 (Hutson - 21 pts)
Tip off (1st Half)

15:30, Down 8-9
We turned the ball over twice in the 1st 30 secs. We recovered courtesy of PG Marquel Jamison's 2 3s

11:36, Up 16-13
We suddenly became a 3-pt shooting team, 4-8 3 PT (3 from PG Marquel Jamison)

7:07, Up 25-20

3:55, Up 30-28
We have 7 turn overs, and UTAH scoring on the fast break

Halftime, Up 32-33
More turn overs, 12 total in the 1st half. I'm surprised we're only down by 1. Certainly not pleased with the team

Start of 2nd Half

17:17, Down 35-41
Game getting out of hand now. UTAH seem to be making every shot. I called an early time out. We go m2m defense

15:47, Down 35-43
2 more turn overs for us. We have not made a single FG in the 2nd half

11:58, Down 41-45
Had several chances to cut the lead to 2. We're crashing the boards (+16 rebs) but still can't hit our shots

Whenever we need a jolt of energy, we go to PF Brian Salvi. He didn't disappoint. He converted a 3-pt play to cut the led to two. After a UTAH missed, he gets the def board. On our possession, Salvi scores again from the post. Salvi now with 10 pts, 4 rebs

9:00, Tied at 48

We get a steal, and SG Mark Austin scores on the break. Another steal. PG Marquel Jamison hits a 3. And suddenly, we lead by 5. UTAH came back with a 3 of their own

6:48, Up 53-51

Salvi drives to the lane, and scores again. We get another steal. And PG Marquel Jamison has drilled another 3! It's his 5th 3 of the game.

5:38, Up 58-51

UTAH goes 5-out. They tried to post their SG against SG MArk Austin. Austin blocks the shot. And Jamison hits another jumper. Jamison with 17 big points

5:09, Up 60-51

3:22, Up 62-51
UTAH can't seem to get anything going on their offense. After getting their biggest lead earlier 35-43, we go on a 27-8 run

Final score: Utah - 57, USC - 68

Box Score
Jamison 17, 2, 4, 3 tos, 5-9 3PT (*)
Hutson 12, 9, 4, 2 blks, 4 tos
Salvi 12, 4, 1
Myers 10, 11, 1, 3 blks
Austin 6, 3, 1
Thorne 5, 8, 1, 2 stls, 5 tos

Post Game Notes
1. PG Marquel Jamison is the player of the game, but it was reserve PF Brian Salvi who got us back when everything seems to be falling apart.

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: M2M
2. Offense focus: Outside
3. Key players: Jr SG Frank Perry (21.9 ppg - #1 Pac 12, 5.5 rpg, 1-time Conf POY and DPOY)

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Favor Inside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 8 / 35%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 9
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 1-2-2 / 8

Previous Meetings
1/27/00 (Away): Won 58-45 (Myers - 22 pts)
Tip off (1st Half)

15:36, Up 10-4
C JR Myers and SF Damion Hutson with 4 pts each. OR, 1-5 FG.

11:39, Up 25-9
Nobody has been able to stop C JR Myers, 14 pts, 7-8 FG. SF Damion Hutson also enjoying a good start, 8 pts, 3-3 FG. OR's SG Frank Perry, 5 pts

7:56, Up 29-11
The team onthe floor did a good job protecting our lead, while our top scorers Myers and Hutson were on the bench resting

3:48, Up 33-19

Halftime, Up 37-23
It was the C JR Myers show in the 1st half, 18 pts, 7 rebs, 9-15 FG.

We're +12 rebs, and has done a good job preventing OR to get 2nd chance pts

OR's SG Frank Perry with 7 pts, 3-7 FG.

Start of 2nd Half

15:45, Up 45-31
C JR Myers picked up his 3rd foul on the 1st play of the half. He's sitting on the bench since. Also, both C Aaron Thorne and PF Brian Salvi with 3 fouls as well; so my main 3-man post rotation all in foul trouble

11:39, Up 50-39
We're just buying some time, until I can put back C JR Myers back on the floor

7:55, Up 53-46
We're in the penalty, and OR getting back in this game via the FT line. I bring back C JR Myers now

2:30, Up 70-56
Our offense went back into full swing, with every one on the floor contributing, including 6 more pts from C JR Myers

Final score: Oregon - 62, USC - 76
We've done it. The first ever Pac 12 Conference Tournament Title for USC!!!
1. OR's SG Frank Perry scored 19 pts, but wasn't really consistent in his shooting (6-15 FG) to pose much of a threat during the game

- Jr PF Robert Adams (9.9 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 1-time All Conf, 1-time Conf DPOY)
- Sr SF Jake Hamilton (8.2 ppg, 1-time All Conf)

4. An average offensive team, 43% FG, 30% 3PT. Their strong suits include:
- Rebounding: 34.1 rpg (#1 A-Sun)
- Defense: 58.8 opp ppg (#1 A-Sun); 41.6% opp FG (#1 A-Sun)

5. How they got here:
- Finished 5th Atlantic Sun regular season; won conference tournament

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Favor Inside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 8 / 35%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 9
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 2-3 / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 9

They are a very balanced team, inside and out, with 7 players averaging at least 6 ppg. We'll take out their inside game, and challenge them to shoot from outside. Percentage-wise, they are not a good 3PT shooting team
Tip off (1st Half)

14:01, Up 9-6
Very edgy start for us, missing our 1st 5 FGAs, and then we hit our last 4

9:36, Up 19-10
We're being force to shoot from the outside because of their zone; fortunately, we're hitting them esp SF Damion Hutson, 8 pts, 4-5 FG

7:22, Up 25-12
We're 3-4 3PT

2:40, Up 33-28
KENN hit 4 consecutive 3s to get back in this game. We'll shift to 1-2-2 zone

Halftime, Down 35-37
In a shocking turn of events, KENN scored the last 6 pts of the half, the last was a fast break at the buzzer.

After starting the game 0-3 3PT, they hit their next 5. KENN was led by reserve SG Chad Ewing 11 pts, 3-3 3PT. PF Greg Hyle with 10 pts

C JR Myers and SF Damion Hutson each with 10 pts. PG Marquel Jamison in foul trouble again

We'll go m2m defense in the 2nd half

Crowd starting to sense a possible upset. We better wake up!

Start of 2nd Half

15:38, Up 47-39
We cranked up our defense, getting 5 steals and scoring some easy transition pts, and go on a 12-2 run to start the 2nd half

11:54, Up 54-49
Game is definitely not over, with KENN's SG Chad Ewing putting his team on his back, 21 pts, 8-8 FG.

7:40, Up 62-54
KENN's SG Chad Ewing finally missed a FG, but we have an eternity of basketball left

Just when everyone thought we had a "comfortable" 13-pt lead, KENN came roaring back again, scoring on 7-0 run. On our next possession, PG Marquel threw the ball away

5:48, Up 67-61

KENN: (SG Chad Ewing current on the bench resting). They score. I called a timeout

5:19, Up 67-63

USC: C JR Myers shoots the ball. Miss. Off rebound by PF Jesse London. London shoots and scores. London has been big off the bench, 6 pts, 5 rebs

4:55, up 69-63

KENN: Reserve SG Andy Taflinger connects on a 3. That is Taflinger's 1st shot of the game.

4:38, Up 69-66

USC: PF Brian Salvi missed. KENN ball
KENN: Turn over
USC: PG Marquel Jamison shoots from the right corner. Miss
KENN: Block by C JR Myers. They recover the ball. SG Andy Taflinger shoots. Taflinger scores again! Taflinger with 5 pts, 2-2 FG

3:28, Up 69-68

USC: PF Jesse London on the low post. London shoots. Miss. London gets the off board. Shoots again. Misses but got a foul. 2 FTs. Hits both. London has 8 pts, 6 rebs, 4-4 FT

3:10, Up 71-68

KENN: They miss.
USC: Turn over by PF Brian Salvi
KENN: They run the break. Scores on a break away jam! Timeout

2:23, Up 71-70

I bring back C Aaron Thorne and SF Damion Hutson.

USC: SF Damion Hutson shoots a 3. Hutson scores. What a big basket. Hutson with 21 pts, 10-15 FG

2:08, Up 74-70

KENN: They drive. Miss. But SG Jake Hamilton gets the off rebound. Hamilton shoots and scores.

1:46, Up 74-72

USC: PG Marquel Jamison surveys the defense. He pass to SG Mark Austin. Austin shoots a 3. Austin scores. Wow, what a game! Austin with 13 pts, 5-10 FG

1:30, Up 77-72

KENN: (interestingly, KENN's coach has not put back SG Chad Ewing) SF Germaine Warren drives to the basket. Warren was met by a double team. Warren twists his shot in teh air. And it went in!

1:09, Up 77-74

USC: Ball goes to C JR Myers at the post. Myers shoots. Miss. Out of bounds. KENN ball. Timeout KENN

0:57, Up 77-74

KENN: Series of screens and passes. Turn over. I call a timeout

0:34, Up 77-74

No need to shoot quickly. They will foul. Slow down the game. I replaced C Aaron Thorne (a poor FT shooter) with PF Jesse London (4-4 FT today)

USC: They foul SG Mark Austin. Only the 6th team foul for KENN. Inbound again. They are not fouling. 0:15 left. With 0:03 left, SG Mark Austin fires up a shot. Miss. Def rebound by KENN. Time expired

Whew! What a relief!

Game #32 - NCAA Tournament Round 2

Postby randy » Sun Nov 17, 2013 1:23 pm

3/18/00: (7) Auburn (20-10, 11-5) vs (2) #7 USC (28-3, 16-2)

Scouting Report

1. Primary defense: 2-3 zone
2. Offense focus: Balanced
3. Key players:
- Jr SF Jimmie Woodward (13.3 ppg, 5.3 rpg)
- Sr SG Tanner Temple (9.6 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 4.0 apg)

4. Looks like starting PF Victor Slade (31 mpg, 6.8 ppg, 6.8 rpg) won't play, as he is still injured with a sprained ankle

Strengths
- Rebounding: 37.2 rpg (#1 SEC, #8 Nat'l)
- Defense: 40.9% opp FG (#2 SEC)

But with the absence of Slade, it significantly affects their rebounding and inside defense.

5. How they got here:
- Finished 2nd SEC (West) regular season; lost conference tournament semi-final

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto / Balanced
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 8 / 35%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 9
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 1-2-2 / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 9

More weight will be put on the shoulders of their guards, with the absence of their starting PF. Which means they may take more outside shots

Also we need to hit our outside shots, in order to loosen up their 2-3 zone
Tip off (1st Half)

14:32, Up 18-10
Our guards have the green light to shoot, and they are delivering. SG Mark Austin, 11 pts, 3-3 3PT; PG Marquel Jamison, 5 pts, 1-1 3PT

11:18, Up 22-13
AUB's SF Jimmie Woodard with 6 pts, 2-3 3PT

7:46, Up 32-19
PG Marquel Jamison falling in love with the 3 pt shot, 11 pts, 3-6 3PT

3:36, Up 38-28
We extended the lead to 17, but AUB is currently on a 7-0 run.

Halftime, Up 42-28
AUB's shooting has cooled down lately. Before that, AUB was shooting above 50% FG, so a 14 pt deficit is something they can easily overcome

We shot 6-11 3PT in the 1st half. SG mark Austin leads all scorers with 13 pts, 3-4 3PT. PG Marquel Jamison, 11 pts, 3-6 3PT

Start of 2nd Half

15:04, Up 51-35
We buried a couple more 3s

11:28, Up 58-42
AUB can't afford to just trade baskets

6:34, Up 67-49

2:46, 74-58
No 2nd half meltdown this time. The players learned their lessons from our previous match. Clear the bench. Slow down the game

Final score: Auburn - 58, USC - 78

Box Score
Austin 18, 3, 1, 4-5 3PT

4. Defense Sets / Intensity: 2-3 / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 9

We'll try to initially prevent inside pts for Minnesota, esp for PF James Takaki. But PG Ron Fox, whose having a great tournament so far, amy pose a problem so we'll have to be ready to adjust.

We had success breaking the zone in our last game, so we'll use again a balanced offense
Tip off (1st Half)

13:41, Up 9-7
We scored 9 straight, and the MINN with the last 7 pts

11:38, Up 11-7
Both teams shooting in the low-30s FG%

5:27, Down 18-28
Disastrous sequence of turn overs, and missed shots. We found ourselves down by 12, 13-25, we scored 5 straight, and then MINN hits another 3. MINN is now 4-8 3 PT. My decision to go 2-3 at the start back fired. We'll shift to 1-2-2 zone

2:19, Down 20-28
Better defense, but we still can't hit our shots

Halftime, Down 27-30
Considering that we were down by 12 at one point, and the way we were shooting (38% FG), we're only down by 3

Both teams with 10 turnovers

SG Mark Austin leads all scorers with 12 pts, 5-6 FG. We need C JR Myers to score more inside pts; he only has 4 pts at the half

MINN's Ron Fox has 6 pts, 2-4 3PT

We'll shift to favor inside in the 2nd half, to get higher-percentage shots. Also, we'll max out on pressure defense

Start of 2nd Half

15:53, Down 30-36
PG Marquel Jamison connected on a 3 to tie the game, but MINN came up with a 6-0 run. MINN has done a good job packing the lane, and we still can't get enough inside pts

11:14, Down 38-48
MINN's PF James Takaki heated up, and now has 10 pts. We'll go m2m defense. We have 16 turn overs, and shooting 37% FG.

8:06, Down 40-49
We are attempting too many 3s. We'll go heavy inside. We need to find a way to attack MINN's zone

PG Marquel Jamison hits a 3. Down 6. After a MINN miss. Jamison connect on a long jumper. Down 4. MINN's Rox Fox, who has been quiet in the 2nd half, answers back with a 3. Deficit back to 7. Teams traded baskets. And then MINN hits a dagger 3. And then we turn the ball over, our 18th of the game. MINN's breaks our press to get an easy 2

3:52, Down 47-59

More misses on our part, including the last attempted 3

1:18, Down 49-63

Not going to happen. Gallant effort by the team. MINN had a better game plan defensively, and we were not prepared.

Final score: Minnesota - 68, USC - 55

Post Game Notes
1. This is not the 1st time we had a poor shooting night, and we usually still win those type of games. The difference today is that MINN did a good job boxing out, and prevented us to get offensive rebounds. MINN executed their defensive game plan not just on their formation, but also on how to control the defensive glass
2. PF James Takaki had a good 2nd half for MINN; he finished with 13 pts, 6-11 FG, 11 rebs
All our players will return next season. A year of experience playing together would surely make this team a lot better.
