The UMass Minutemen (2-1) flew across the country to take on the Oregon State Beavers (3-2). The first half of the game was back-and-forth, featuring 14 lead changes and 12 ties. In the last minute of the half, the Beavers scored the last two buckets and took a 39-35 lead into the locker room. The second half, the Beavers kept that minimal lead and never allowed the Minutemen to tie it up or take the lead. After some late game free throws, the Beavers won 82-74.

The Minutemen shot 50% from the floor but only 6-19 from three. We won the rebound battle 29-26, but had five more turnovers than the Beavers and gave up ten more points in the paint. OSU center Josh Morris finished with 16 big points, missing only one of his eight shots, in leading the Beavers to a win.

Heading back to Amherst, the Massachusetts Minutemen (2-2) host the Monmouth Hawks (2-3), looking to get back in the win column. This one, as you may figure, wasn't too close. The teams traded buckets early to a 2-2 tie, but the Minutemen rolled to a 69-53 win. Although the UMass defense forced 22 turnovers, they still allowed the Hawks to shoot 51.1% from the floor including 5-10 from deep. The FG% defense early on is a definite concern for Coach Sanders. Senior point guard Robb Ezell exploded for a career-high 25 points.

The Hawaii Warriors (2-3) march in to the Mullins Center and stun the Massachusetts Minutemen (3-2) by stealing a win, 61-50. UMass shot 17-53 from the floor (32.1%) and connected on only one of their 14 attempts from deep. Hawaii dominated the glass 40-26 and proved to be the difference in this one.

What is going on?!? The UMass Minutemen (3-3) traveled to take on the lowly Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers (1-5) and get stunned! The Panthers shoot a blazing 60% from the floor and get a much needed win 75-66. Just no words to describe the low of this loss...

The Commonwealth Classic featuring the Boston College Eagles (4-4) and the Massachusetts Minutemen (3-4) is the biggest rivalry game for each of these teams out of their respect conferences every season. This game is huge for recruiting implications for in-state recruits. Fortunately for UMass, this one wasn't close.

The Minutemen had the lead the entire game and never looked back. Their lead continued to grow up until the final buzzer with score ending at 69-47. The Minutemen woke up and shot 50% from the floor to the Eagles' 36%. UMass also attempted ten more free throws and had the Eagles in foul trouble all game long. Robb Ezell was big again tonight with 21 points.

The lowly Bellarmrine Knights (1-6) come in to the Mullins Center and hang with the UMass Minutemen (4-4), but the upset fell short as the maroon and white pull out a 65-52 win. Forcing 20 turnovers was a huge reason for the UMass win. Center Travis Arnold (21 points, 7 boards) was also too much for the Knights to handle in the paint. Freshman Ryan Mardis saw his first action since the season opening loss to Florida. He logged 11 minutes off the bench, poured in nine points on 4-5 shooting, but only 1-4 from the line. He added one rebound and four turnovers. Jason Barber is still firmly glued to the bench behind a stable of solid big men.

Points: Travis Arnold (21), Thomas Delk (13),Ryan Mardis (9)
Rebounds: Travis Arnold (7), Jason Prince (7), Nate Davenport (5)

The UMass Minutemen (5-4) hosted the Valparaiso Crusaders (7-3), a mid-major that always poses threats to bigger schools. It's always great to play games against teams like Valpo, especially when you win. UMass led this game 32-31 at halftime, but outscored the Crusaders by 15 in the second half and won 73-57. Jason Prince had a game-high and career-high 20 points in leading the way in the win. Ryan Mardis saw action in his second straight game. He put up ten shots in 11 minutes, but only connected on two of them, while hauling in three boards as well.

Points: Jason Prince (20), Gregory Murphy (11), Thomas Delk (10)
Rebounds: Nate Davenport (7), Gregory Murphy (6)
Assists: Senecca Goff (7), Jason Prince (5)

The UMass Minutemen (6-4) face perhaps their biggest challenge before the conference schedule today as they head to South Carolina (7-4). The SEC handed UMass a big loss to open the season as the Florida Gators dominated, but that did not happen tonight. The aggressive nature of UMass led to 22 free throws for the road team as the Gamecocks attempted just six en route to a 70-63 win. That was the difference in the game as almost every statistical comparison was just about even. Big man Travis Arnold put in work down low as he scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed six boards.

Points: Travis Arnold (17), Jarod Daniels (13), Thomas Delk (12)

The defending A-10 champion George Washington Colonials (5-8) visit the Mullins Center to take on the Massachusetts Minutemen (7-4) to start the conference schedule. Winning the turnover battle as well as shooting ten more free throws allowed the Minutemen to take this game 63-58, but the game wasn't that close. Player of the Game honors goes to Jason Prince, who put up a well-rounded stat line of five points, five assists, four rebounds and eight steals.

Points: Travis Arnold (12), Thomas Delk (9), John Collins (9)
Rebounds: Travis Arnold (8), Gregory Murphy (4), Jason Prince (4)

UMass (8-4) heads to Ohio to take on Xavier (8-4), but lost with a 68-62 loss. Although they won the turnover margin by 10, they shot just 39.4% from the floor, including 3-22 from deep. Xavier, on the other hand, shot 52% and knocked down six of their nine three-point attempts. You live by the three...

Points: Senecca Goff (13), Thomas Delk (12), Travis Arnold (10)
Rebounds: Gregory Murphy (7), Nate Davenport (5), Derek Neal (5)

The lowly Bonnies from St. Bonaventure (4-9) travel to Amherst to take on the Minutemen of Massachusetts (8-5). Coming off a tough loss at Xavier, the 25-point win over the Bonnies, 79-54, was a welcomed site. The Minutemen clamped down defensively and held the Bonnies to 31.4% from the field. Wins like this will increase the excitement in the locker room.

Points: Jason Prince (13), Robb Ezell (12), Senecca Goff (12), Jarod Daniels (11)

Massachusetts (9-5) @ La Salle (2-12)

The Minutemen head into Tom Gola Arena and dominate the Explorers 63-42. Senecca Goff was the Player of the Game with 19 points, four assists and three rebounds. The difference in the game was the defense for UMass as they held the home team to just 35% shooting.

Points: Senecca Goff (19), Thomas Delk (12), Travis Arnold (11)
Rebounds: Travis Arnold (7), Gregory Murphy (3), Senecca Goff (3)

Duquesne (9-7) vs. Massachusetts (10-5)

Another dominant performance for the Minutemen as they seal up an 84-62 home win. They had four players score in double-figures, but freshmen Ryan Mardis and Jason Barber still don't see they floor at all.

Points: Thomas Delk (20), Travis Arnold (16), Senecca Goff (15), Jason Prince (10)
Rebounds: Travis Arnold (7), Gregory Murphy (4), Senecca Goff (4), Jason Prince (4), Nate Davenport (4)

Massachusetts (11-5) vs. Fordham (4-12)

Well you can't win every game by 20 points, but who says you can't win by ten? The Minutemen do that as they take home a 66-56 win over the Rams of Fordham. Being a plus-12 from beyond the arc was a huge reason why we were able to win this one.

Points: Senecca Goff (10), Thomas Delk (10), Travis Arnold (9)

Dayton (10-7) vs. Massachusetts (12-5)

Before hosting the Dayton Flyers tonight, the UMass Minutemen were winners of nine of their last games. After tonight, make it ten of the last eleven. A 61-55 home win brings the Minutemen' record to 13-5, including 6-1 in conference. That's good for a tie for first in the Atlantic 10 Conference with the Richmond Spiders who sport the same exact record. Richmond, once ranked in the top-25, has now stumbled out of the rankings and leaves the conference open for the taking.

Points: Thomas Delk (16), Travis Arnold (16), Senecca Goff (9)

Massachusetts (13-5) vs. Temple (13-5)

Two bitter rivals take the floor. Temple was once a top-25 team in the nation, but a 4-3 start in A-10 play has brought them back down to earth. In a hard fought battle, UMass ballooned their largest lead to 15 points, but Temple fought back to cut it within two. After a couple late free throws, the Minutemen pulled out an 82-77 win. The Minutemen were on fire from the floor, shooting a scintillating 58%.

Points: Senecca Goff (15), Travis Arnold (11), Robb Ezell (10), Jarod Daniels (10)
Rebounds: Travis Arnold (6), Gregory Murphy (5), Thomas Delk (4)

St. Joseph's (15-6) vs. Massachusetts (14-5)

Another game where the Minutemen find themselves with a 15-point second half lead, another game where they cling on to a close win. This time, the Minutemen get themselves a 77-73 win at home. Both teams shot 50+% from the floor. The Hawks hit all four of their three-point attempts, but the Minutemen were nine of ten from deep and forced eight more turnovers. St. Joseph's kept it close by winning the battle of the glass, 27-20, but it wasn't enough to get a win.

Points: Thomas Delk (15), Senecca Goff (15), Gregory Murphy (12), Robb Ezell (12), Jason Prince (12)
Rebounds: Travis Arnold (5), Gregory Murphy (4)

Looks like UMass is starting to raise its profile a bit more towards the Camby era. Good things for an assistant coach.

Yes, I'm thinking this could be the year we finally make a return to the NCAA tournament. I'm hoping to finish up this season today as I'm flying out on vacation early tomorrow and won't be back until Friday night. The weather outside isn't making it any easier to dedicate time to this game, though.

Massachusetts (15-5) vs. Charlotte (11-9)

The streak has, finally, come to an end... The Charlotte 49ers hand the Minutemen their first loss since January 5th as they took this one 73-63. We just settled for too many three-point shots instead of sticking to what worked for us the last few games and attacking the rim. One positive, from a recruiting assistant's point of view, was the return of freshman Ryan Mardis to the court. Coach Sanders gave him 11 minutes of playing time and he responded with seven points on three of six shooting, one board and one assist.

Points: Jarod Daniels (10), Thomas Delk (9), Travis Arnold (9)
Rebounds: Travis Arnold (8), Robb Ezell (5), Nate Davenport (4)
Assists: Robb Ezell (4), John Collins (4)
Steals: Thomas Delk (4), Gregory Murphy (2), Derek Neal (2)

Rhode Island (8-13) vs. Massachusetts (15-6)

Home sweet home! After a tough loss in Charlotte, the Minutemen coast to an easy 64-48 win at the Mullins Center. A 40-17 lead at halftime allowed Coach Sanders to play his bench quality minutes in the second half. Thomas Delk was the Player of the Game with 11 points, four steals, three assists and two steals while Ryan Mardis chipped in seven points on three of seven shooting in 12 minutes of playing time.

Points: Robb Ezell (12), Thomas Delk (11), Jarod Daniels (10), Ryan Mardis (7)
Rebounds: Travis Arnold (6), Robb Ezell (5), Senecca Goff (4)

Saint Louis (13-10) vs. Massachusetts (16-6)

If the Minutemen thought the Rhode Island game was a breeze, they didn't know that Saint Louis was going to lay down and die early in this one. Another big home win for the Minutemen, this one to the tune of 77-45, leaves the Minutemen all alone at the top of the conference standings at 10-2 with both Charlotte and Richmond two games back at 8-4. With only four games left for all A-10 teams, the Minutemen could lock up the #1 seed in the conference tournament in the next week if things go their way.

Points: Thomas Delk (24), Jarod Daniels (14), Senecca Goff (9)
Rebounds: Gregory Murphy (7), Nate Davenport (4)
Assists: Robb Ezell (5)
Steals: Derek Neal (2), five others with 1 each

Massachusetts (17-6) vs. Richmond (15-8)

With a chance to put some serious separation between themselves and the Spiders of Richmond, the Minutemen blew it today. It's always tough playing on the road against some of the top competition in this league and it showed today as Richmond held on to win a 72-68 thriller. The Spiders led by as much as 14 in the second half and the Minutemen kept battling to chip away at the lead but ran out of time at the end. With this loss and a Charlotte win, both the 49ers and Spiders are now just one game back of the Minutemen for the #1 seed.

Points: Thomas Delk (13), Jason Prince (12), Senecca Goff (8), Jarod Daniels (8)
Rebounds: Nate Davenport (6), Gregory Murphy (5), Travis Arnold (4)
Assists: John Collins (6), Robb Ezell (3)

Massachusetts (17-7) vs. George Washington (11-15)

In what is almost a must-win game to continue to hold first place all alone, the Minutemen steal a 1-point on the road 77-76! With that win and botch Charlotte and Richmond losing, UMass is again two games up on both of them with only two games left. A Minuteman win will clinch the #1 seed and A-10 regular season championship!

Points: Travis Arnold (17), Jarod Daniels (14), Thomas Delk (11)
Rebounds: Travis Arnold (6), Thomas Delk (4)
Assists: Senecca Goff (4), five others with 2 each
Steals: Gregory Murphy (3), Thomas Delk (2)

February 20, 2013

Xavier (16-9) vs. Massachusetts (18-7)

The UMass Minutemen, with an 80-68 home win, clinch their first A-10 regular season title under Coach Sanders! What made it even more special was the fact that they got to do it in front of their home fans. This will guarantee them a spot in the NIT, but a chance to go dancing for the first time since 1998 is what this team is really shooting for.

Points: Thomas Delk (17), Senecca Goff (15), Jason Prince (14)
Rebounds: Travis Arnold (4), Thomas Delk (4)
Assists: Thomas Delk (4), Senecca Goff (4)
Steals: Thomas Delk (6), Senecca Goff (3), four players with 2 each

Massachusetts (19-7) vs. St. Bonaventure (8-18)

After clinching the #1 seed in the A-10 tournament, Coach Sanders decided to rest some of his starters. There was a bit of a let down to be expected and it happened tonight as the Minutemen fell to the Bonnies 72-59. It would have been great to have secured a 20th win in the regular season, but the Minutemen will have to pick that up in the A-10 tournament.

Points: Robb Ezell (12), Senecca Goff (10), Travis Arnold (10)
Rebounds: Travis Arnold (4), Thomas Delk (4), Senecca Goff (4), Robb Ezell (4)
