Game #10

Postby PointGuard » Thu Feb 21, 2013 10:21 pm

Game #10; Dec. 17, 2011; CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners (4-5) at Texas State Bobcats (4-5)

Texas State has won 4 of 6 at home, so tonight’s game will be a difficult one for us but if we play well enough, they can be beaten. Their two guard and center are all scoring in double figures.

We held a slim lead through most of the first half, but the Bobcats hit some late shots that allowed them to walk off the court with a 39-38 lead. Andrew Powers knocked down 10 points to pace our scoring.

The game went back and forth for the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half, then the refs began calling foul after foul against us and our shooting went cold. Texas State pulled away and we were unable to get back into the game.

Final Score: Texas State-79, CSU Bakersfield-65. CSU Bakersfield season record: 4-6.

Scoring leaders: Powers-16, Bivins-11, Chase-10, Holmes-8.

Rebound leaders: Chase-8, Settles-5.

Assist leaders: Bivins-6.

Player of the Game: Texas State’s C Ben Ellis-17 pts, 7 reb, 1 assist, 1 block.

Coach’s Pat on the Back Award: PF Johnny Chase-10 pts, 8 reb, 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks.

Other notes: Texas State hit 48% of their shots, while we could only manage to knock down 41%. But the big difference in the game was that the Bobcats got 15 more free throws and scored 11 more points from the charity stripe than did we.

Game #11

Postby PointGuard » Thu Feb 21, 2013 10:22 pm

Game #11; Dec. 21, 2011; CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners (4-6) at Utah Utes (7-2)

Utah scheduled us to fatten up their record before Pac-12 conference play begins. James Trotti and Kendric Meekins, their starting guards, are averaging a combined 33.6 ppg.

The refs called 6 fouls against us in the first 3 minutes while assessing none against Utah and we trailed 9-2. We fought back to tie the game at 15-15 with 8:42 remaining in the half. We basically played them even except that their 6th men on the floor (the refs) awarded them 13 more free throws than us allowing them to score 11 more points at the line. The half ended with Utah ahead by those 11 points, 33-22. Rashun Kamura came off the bend to score 5 points to lead our scoring.

Both our starters and our bench played very well in the 2nd half and we cut the Utes lead to 46-44 with 9-1/2 minutes to play. Utah turned on the afterburners in the final 5 minutes and drove to victory.

Final Score: Utah-68, CSU Bakersfield-54. CSU Bakersfield season record: 4-7.

Scoring leaders: Bivins-12, Hill-11.

Rebound leaders: Johnson-11, Chase-6.

Assist leaders: Bivins-4.

Player of the Game: Utah’s SG Kendric Meekins-21 pts, 5 reb, 2 steals.

Coach’s Pat on the Back Award: C David Johnson-6 pts, 11 reb, 2 assists, 1 steal.

Other notes: Utah’s 43-34 rebounding advantage was a decisive factor as were their 8 more points they scored at the free throw line. Otherwise we played them pretty evenly, so I was very proud of how our team played on the road against a strong team. Utah’s guards (Trotti and Meekins) combined for 38 points.

Game #12

Postby PointGuard » Thu Feb 21, 2013 10:23 pm

Game #12; Dec. 24, 2011; CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners (4-7) at Mount St. Mary Mountaineers (3-5)

Mount St. Mary’s wins are against Virginia Tech, Central Michigan, and Tulsa, so they are a better team that their record indicates. Their top scorer is PG Keiron Bailey (16.0 ppg).

The first half was closely contested throughout, but Mount St. Mary’s 61% shooting allowed them to take a 37-35 lead to the locker room. Greg Bivins scored 8 points to lead our scoring.

The Mountaineers continued to shoot well in the 2nd half and built a 13 point lead. We cut that to 6 but couldn’t climb the mountain.

Final Score: Mount St. Mary-72, CSU Bakersfield-63. CSU Bakersfield season record: 4-8.

Scoring leaders: Bivins-12, Holmes-10, Chase-8.

Rebound leaders: Hill-6, Johnson-5, Chase-5.

Assist leaders: Bivins-7.

Player of the Game: Mount St. Mary’s PG Keiron Bailey-17 pts, 4 reb, 8 assists, 2 steals.

Coach’s Pat on the Back Award: Greg Bivins-12 pts, 3 reb, 7 assists, 1 steal.

Other notes: Mount St. Mary hit 54% of their shots and out-rebounded us 36-26.

Game #13

Postby PointGuard » Thu Feb 21, 2013 10:25 pm

Game #13; Dec. 28, 2011; CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners (4-8) at Rutgers Scarlett Knights (5-5)

The two guards and small forward starters for Rutgers are collectively averaging nearly 40 ppg so we will have to try to control all three of them.

The score stayed close until the final 5 minutes of the half when Rutgers took advantage of our turnovers to pull out to a 31-23 halftime advantage.
Rutgers hit 56% of the FG attempts to our 31% shooting but we dropped in 5 of 8 threes and out-rebounded the Scarlett Knights 19-13. Rutgers’ defense forced us to turn the ball over 11 times. Our leading scorers were Greg Bivins and Andrew Powers with 6 points each.

Rutgers must have had a “come to Jesus” meeting in the locker room at halftime, because they came out on fire and roared to a 20 point advantage. We repeatedly cut their lead to 12 or 14 points but could never get closer.

Final Score: Rutgers-71, CSU Bakersfield-52. CSU Bakersfield season record: 4-9.

Scoring leaders: Bivins-17, Powers-12, Jones-11,

Rebound leaders: Bivins-8, Settles-7, Jones-6, Williams-5.

Assist leaders: Powers-5.

Player of the Game: Rutgers’ SF Mike Howard-16 pts, 4 reb, 1 steal, 1 block.

Coach’s Pat on the Back Award: PG Greg Bivins-17 pts, 8 reb, 2 assists, 2 steals.

Other notes: Rutgers dropped in 49% of their shots, we could only manage to connect on 31% of ours. Surprisingly we controlled the boards 42-34. We made 17 turnovers to Rutgers 10 though.

Oh well, I think we took care of any chance of that with this recent 4 game road swing. :(

Playing on the road has been tough on us. We went 0-6 playing away from home in pre-conference games. We need to pick up some road wins in the upcoming conference games, otherwise winning 10 games this season will be very difficult to achieve.

The road is tough for good teams. For teams that are rated low it's REALLY tough.

I guess I'm not the only one getting zebra'd to death.
