Still on the road but we need to turn this around, and NOW! At 7-6, 2-2 Western Illinois. They’re up and down. This won’t be easy but I think I have the guys ready to win one. If we stay out of foul trouble we can do that. To that end, reluctant as I am, I’m going to play more 2-3. We go about 70-30 man. I’m switching to 50-50.
1/11: Damn! That was easy. It’s a back and forth game, we go down by as many as 12 in the first half before going in down 35-40, but no one is close to being in foul trouble.
We play really well in the 2nd, continue to stay out of foul trouble, take a lead, expand it to 13, and win by 77-67.
+5 RB, fouls were 9-20.
21, 5, 3 for Henry, 11, 15, 1, 1 for Holden, 16, 3, 4 for Slak, 10, 6 for Clerq. Hopefully I’ve solved the problem. Time will tell.
Back home with 5-9, 3-2 UMKC. They struggle on the road and they really don’t play much D.
1/14: Of course maybe I’m just stupid. No one in foul trouble all night tonight either. We’re down 7 early but come back to take a 36-30 lead into the locker room. Henry is terrific.
We steadily increase the lead to 13 and win it 71-59.
+4, +2, 45-32%, fouls were 10-15. Yeah, I’m definitely stupid. Why didn’t I do this earlier!
25, 7, 4, 2 for Henry, 17, 4, 4, 1 for Slak, 11, 8, 3 for Holden, 11, 7, 2, 1 for Clerq.
Dad says no, I’m not stupid, I’m smart for figuring out what the problem is and not being too stubborn to change. He says lots of coaches, even some at the top, are way too set in their ways and will stick by their system even when it clearly isn’t getting results. He says he used to love to play those guys.
We’re only one game back of No. Dak. ST, tied with 2 teams for 2nd.
At 8-7, 2-4 South Dakota. They’ve lost 3 of 4, 4 of 6. Not good with the ball.
1/18: Oh, I guess I didn’t fix everything. We didn’t get in foul trouble but we shot 26.7%. We went down early and watched the deficit grow steadily throughout the game.
At one point we were down 28. 43-63 at the end. D wasn’t awful there just wasn’t any O, nor much of anything else.
-10 RB, they shot 47%. Frustrated, but maybe we were just a little luckier last year.
