Jess Wynn, to do the impossible

Making some progress

Postby Wayne23 » Sat Apr 27, 2013 9:11 pm

Still on the road but we need to turn this around, and NOW! At 7-6, 2-2 Western Illinois. They’re up and down. This won’t be easy but I think I have the guys ready to win one. If we stay out of foul trouble we can do that. To that end, reluctant as I am, I’m going to play more 2-3. We go about 70-30 man. I’m switching to 50-50.

1/11: Damn! That was easy. It’s a back and forth game, we go down by as many as 12 in the first half before going in down 35-40, but no one is close to being in foul trouble.

We play really well in the 2nd, continue to stay out of foul trouble, take a lead, expand it to 13, and win by 77-67.

+5 RB, fouls were 9-20.

21, 5, 3 for Henry, 11, 15, 1, 1 for Holden, 16, 3, 4 for Slak, 10, 6 for Clerq. Hopefully I’ve solved the problem. Time will tell.

Back home with 5-9, 3-2 UMKC. They struggle on the road and they really don’t play much D.

1/14: Of course maybe I’m just stupid. No one in foul trouble all night tonight either. We’re down 7 early but come back to take a 36-30 lead into the locker room. Henry is terrific.

We steadily increase the lead to 13 and win it 71-59.

+4, +2, 45-32%, fouls were 10-15. Yeah, I’m definitely stupid. Why didn’t I do this earlier!

25, 7, 4, 2 for Henry, 17, 4, 4, 1 for Slak, 11, 8, 3 for Holden, 11, 7, 2, 1 for Clerq.

Dad says no, I’m not stupid, I’m smart for figuring out what the problem is and not being too stubborn to change. He says lots of coaches, even some at the top, are way too set in their ways and will stick by their system even when it clearly isn’t getting results. He says he used to love to play those guys.

We’re only one game back of No. Dak. ST, tied with 2 teams for 2nd.
At 8-7, 2-4 South Dakota. They’ve lost 3 of 4, 4 of 6. Not good with the ball.

1/18: Oh, I guess I didn’t fix everything. We didn’t get in foul trouble but we shot 26.7%. We went down early and watched the deficit grow steadily throughout the game.

At one point we were down 28. 43-63 at the end. D wasn’t awful there just wasn’t any O, nor much of anything else.

-10 RB, they shot 47%. Frustrated, but maybe we were just a little luckier last year.

2 wins and a loss and some potentially big developments

Postby Wayne23 » Sun Apr 28, 2013 11:40 am

IUPU- Fort Wayne, 9-7, 4-3 is in. They’ve won their last 3.

1/21: Still avoiding foul trouble. Slak and Henry are staying in the game and really doing a great job of leading us. We go up early and take a 10 point lead into the locker room, 35-25.

The second half was pretty even. They never got closer than 5 and the final was 69-58.

+1, -6, 47-36%. Great D. Fouls were 14-13.

24, 4, 5, 1 for Slak, 19, 7, 3, 1 for Henry, 9, 9, 1 for Holden, 8, 6 for Clerq. Smid was unimpressive on both ends as was the bench.

AT ORU, one of three tied for 2nd (with Southern Utah and us). They’re 9-8, 5-3, and have lost 3 of 4, giving up LOTS of points. Their 5 is probably their best player but 1 and 2 score. This should be a tough road game.

1/25: Henry had serious foul problems- bound to happen now and then I guess, as did their best player, their C, so I guess it balanced. We chased them all night. At the half it was 33-44.

We got as close as 3, with the ball on two occasions in the 2nd but we couldn’t get any closer. Final was 69-76. D didn’t get it done.

+6, -3, 33-45%, so the O wasn’t too great either. Fouls were 21-21.

Henry managed to play 32 min. before fouling out and he had 21, 3, 4, 1, 13, 12, 1 for Holden, 9 each for Clerq and Slak. We’re 1-4 in in conf. road games.
That needs to change. Dad and I discuss it and then I speak with the staff about it.

At 7-11, 1-8 Oakland. 1-8 in their last 9 but it was a win at home against ORU. Beat them by 14 at our place. We need a road win.

1/28: The usual early back and forth but we were better than this team and it started to show about 10 minutes in. We took the lead and slowly expanded it to 41-29 at the half. Clerq was in foul trouble, unusual for him, but everyone else was okay.

We held the lead in the 2nd, even stretched it to 15 at one point. The final was 71-62.

+5, +1, fouls were even.

Clerq fouled out in 22 min. 24, 6, 5 for Henry, 15, 6, 5, 1 for Slak. Holden played well, as did Lepore, from the bench.

1/29: BIG developments on the SAT front. The guy we offered to, Tim Langhi, hit 850, which is too low for any of the schools he is most interested in. We’re stepping up our efforts. Two other guys look very much worth pursuing.

Jay Freeman, #17 PF, hit 810. We’ll go after him HARD. Qual Stoud, #66 C, hit 830 and we’ll go after him just as hard. I am transferring two guys to hardship scholarships right now to free up the room. That happened after an all night phone conversation with Dad. He asked if I expected to be here at SDSU for long. I said I didn’t think I’d get any really decent offers for at least 2-3 years. He said I should roll the dice and go for these guys in that case.

Low SAT guys, either through regular recruiting or through the transfer route, are the only way to attract guys here, and it was worth the gamble. I’m going for it.

Soph Leon More is the first to go. Curt Camel has been an overachiever but with a ½ star potential, he’s the other cut.

We offer to Stoud and Freeman and we’ll court two other low SAT guys, Rex Alek, #39 PF, 860, and PG Matt Myers, #78, 860. Let’s see what happens. Our Team Prestige didn’t take a hit, which is pretty shocking.

We beat the conf. leader

Postby Wayne23 » Sun Apr 28, 2013 2:10 pm

Dad flies in for his first visit this season. 4 of our next 6 are at home and he’s here for a couple of weeks. He is always a huge help. I think he misses hoops and he’s here for a fix. It can only help us.

IUPU beat us by 9 at their place and that shouldn’t have happened. We plan to win this one. They’ve lost a lot of games lately and they’re 6-13, 3-7. Bring it.

2/1: Wow! A 58 point 1st half. Our guys had fire in their eyes when they came out and they held the intensity throughout, 58-32.

We kind of relaxed in the 2nd but it was never a game, 88-64.

+10 RB, 50-35% shooting, fouls were 21-12 but it wasn’t a factor.

30, 6, 6, 1 for Slak, 22, 7, 4, 1 for Henry.

Back in a 3 way tie for 2nd. Seems like every time that happens we lose a game.

At Southern Utah, we won by only 5 there. They’re 6-2 since.
2/4: We play well on the road for the 2nd straight game. We build a double digit lead and hold it for most of the 1st half, 34-27 at the break.

In the 2nd we build it to 15 before they shrink it a little toward the end. 67-59 is the final score.

-10 RB (unusual), +7 TO, 41-39%. Fouls were 13-9 but not a factor.

All 5 starters plus Don Lepore played well.

2/5: Jay Freeman is showing some interest. Nothing from the others but we’ll keep at it. Freeman’s #17, higher than anyone we’ve ever come close to landing.

Dad’s at every practice and really helping out. He meets with the staff afterward and his input is terrific.

Conf. leader No. Dak. ST, 15-6, 11-1 is in next. They won by 13 there and they’re beating up on everyone. They do everything well. In the first game they beat us badly inside. Their 4 and 5 hammered ours, and their PG had 22. We work on some strategies.

2/8: Another game where we take charge early. That’s becoming a pattern for us and hopefully it will continue. The lead got to 12, and it was 41-31 at the half. 2 fouls each for Henry and Slak, but the 2nd happened late for both. We did the job inside way better than last time.

We’re having Clerq play closer to the hoop on D than he normally would, ready to double and to hit the boards. On the outside we’re doubling the PG. Their 2 is open but you can’t cover everything.

We build the lead to 13. They come at us three different times, getting the lead down to 4 twice, but we stop the run and battle back.

Henry gets #4 at 5:34, which adds some stress but Robin does a great job of filling in. When Slak gets his 4th at 1:36 we’re up 10 and it’s too late to matter. The final is 73-66.

This is a great win. We won’t catch NDSU but now they know we can beat them, hopefully they’ll remember that if we meet in the conf. tourney.

+7 RB, and the rest of the stats were pretty even.

26 for Henry, 12, 8 for Clerq, 11, 6, 5 for Slak, 8, 9 for Holden and great work by Robin. Their 2 got 19 but we controlled their 1, 4, and 5, which is how we won. Thanks Dad, it was your plan.

Tied with ORU, 2 games back.

2 wins and an ugly loss

Postby Wayne23 » Sun Apr 28, 2013 2:40 pm

10-12, 5-8 Western Illinois is in. We won by 10 there. They’re losing more than they’re winning, and they haven’t won on the road since 12/14.

2/11: We don’t start fast in this one. We’re down 7 at 15:39. Still 7, 7:02. We gpo on a late run, 29-30 at the half. At halftime I convince them that we’re in control and that we’ll win this one. We make a couple of small changes to get guys a little more open.

We never build a big lead but we stay ahead for almost the entire 2nd half. AT the end it’s 63-57.

16 TOs hurt (They had 9). We held them to 32% shooting. We won this one from the line, 18-24 vs. 7-13.

23, 4, 2 for Henry, 18, 4, 3, 2 for Slak, 10, 6, 1 for Holden, 13 RBs for Clerq. Les Robin played well again. He’s about the only bench guy who gives us anything.

Alone in 2nd, 2 back with 4 to play.

At 8-15, 6-8 UMKC. Beat them by 12 at home. They’ve lost their last 2. It’s a road game. I keep hammering that to my guys. You simply need to play harder and smarter on the road.

2/15: We don’t. Well, we don’t after the first half. We go up 8 early then watch the lead evaporate. 30-30 at the half. We simply don’t show up for the 2nd half. At one point I pulled everybody. It didn’t help. 52-71.

If not our worst performance of the year it was pretty close. I can’t think of anything we did well.

Dad’s only here for a few more days. He works with the staff on how to get your kids back after a bad loss. We’re encouraging but demanding complete focus.

We don’t wear the guys out in practice but go with intense short bursts followed by chalk talk, working plays, things like that.

Back to a tie for 2nd, still; 2 back. NDSU lost so we missed a golden opportunity.

South Dakota, 12-12, 6-9 is in. Lost by 20 on an awful night there. They’ve lost 3 of 4. We’re the better team. Now we need to play like it.

2/18: Much better. The first half stayed close for about 17 minutes, then we went on a run. 38-30 at the half.

As bad as we were in the 2nd half last game, we were that good this game, 83-58.

+24 RB and we shot 52%.Our starters plus Robin all put up great numbers. Henry fouled out in 26 minutes but Robin was solid.

NDSU lost again, tied with ORU 1 back with 2 to play.

18-7, 11-5.

End of the regular season

Postby Wayne23 » Sun Apr 28, 2013 3:09 pm

If we ever needed a road win this is the one. IUPU-Fort Wayne is 14-11, 9-7, tied for 4th, 2 back of us. We won by 11 at home. They’ve won 3 after losing 3. They’re tough at home. Their 2 can light it up. They just lost their back up 3 to a broken hand, not a big deal but it shortens their bench. They’re sloppy.

2/22: They slapped us around for the entire 1st half, leading by as many as 13. It was 22-32 at the break. I raised every kind of hell I could at halftime and we were a different team in the 2nd.

We took a 4 point lead with 1:01 left. With 11 ticks to go we were up 3. They came down, we played excellent D, and a little used sub SF threw up a prayer at the buzzer.

It went in off the glass and we were in OT. We battled on every possession and the end was almost a rerun of the end of regulation. It was tied with :08 left. They came down and hit a 3 at the buzzer. 69-72. A VERY tough loss. Any sort of a break at all and we’d have won.

The stats were all pretty even. Their bench won it, 19, 16 to 3, 7. Our bench hasn’t helped much this year and it killed us tonight.

NDSU clinched 1st so they’ll host the tourney.

ORU is in to determine 2nd place. They’re 15-11, 11-6, to our 18-8, 11-6. They won by 7 there. They’ve been erratic lately. As with most teams they’re much better at home. They get most of their points from the 1, 2, and 5 spots. They’re a good team and we need to come to play.

We’ve already met our two goals of finishing top 3 and winning 15+ games but we want more.

2/25: And come to play we did! We scored the first 14 and by that time the sellout crowd had the stadium vibrating they were so loud. We went in up 49-26.

We got it to 25 early and then then Henry picked up # 3 and 4 on consecutive trips down the flor. I sat him at 13:28. Robin came in and focused on D. He handcuffed the other PG and we held onto the lead, or at least enough of it. 78-64 at the end and we finish 2nd in conf.

+7, -1 (only 9 TOs), 48-34% shooting, and fouls were even.

23, 8, 8, 1 for Slak, 16, 13 for Clerq, 19, 3 for Henry in 17 min., 13, 5, 1, 1 for Holden. Great D by Smid and Robin.

With a little more luck and a little deeper bench we could have won the regular season but we were picked #5 so I’ll take this. RPI #30, 19-8, 12-6, 1 back of 1st place.
