12/6/01: Marshall (1-3) @ #25 USC (4-1)

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: 2-3
2. Offense focus: Balanced
Tip off (1st Half)

16:00, Up 8-7

10:56, Up 19-13
SG Kaniel Coley 2-2 3PT

7:59, Down 19-20

2:54, Up 35-29

Halftime, Up 46-38

Highlights
  • Majority of the shots were from the outside, and both teams shooting well at 53% FG. It's also even on most categories, except for MARS committing 11 turn overs, while we only had 5. This resulted in a +8 differential in fast break pts in our favor
Adjustment
  • We'll shift to 1-2-2 zone in the 2nd half

Start of 2nd Half

14:30, Up 55-49
MARS came as close as 1 pt. C Antonio Forney on the bench with 4 fouls

After a bucket by SF Anthony Bryant, there was an exchange (twice) of 3s between SG Kaniel Coley (18 pts, 6-12 3PT) and MARS' SF Greg Kellum (17 pts, 5-7 3PT)

12:25, Up 63-55
...
A basket by MARS. And them Coley hits his 7th 3

11:05: 66-57
...
Coley with his 8th 3 of the game! Coley has scored our last 12 pts

7:53: Up 69-57
...
Coley with the trifecta #9
...
Coley sticks it from deep for three! His 10th of the game. Pandemonium in the arena. 18 straight points by Coley. Who says Coley-mania is beginning to die down

MARS calls a timeout. Maybe to cool down Coley?

6:58, Up 75-57

Even an iceberg won't cool down Coley. Coley lets one go. Coley fills it up from long range. #11

6:29, Up 78-57
...
MARS scores 2 (after about 5 mins of drought). A series of screens for Coley. Coley lets one go. Did Coley call the bank on that triple? It doesn't matter. That's triple #12! 24 straight pts by Coley

5:56, Up 81-59

MARS splits their FTs. Crowd dying of anticipation on our next offensive possession. Coley gets a pass. Coley puts up a shot. Coley missed that one
But SF Sam Millar grabs the board. Millar shoots, hits the iron, bounces up and in! Wow, everything is falling in, even for guys not named Coley. Or maybe Coley used mind control to direct that ball into the basket

4:42, Up 83-59

MARS with the possession. Block. We set up a play. Coley receives the pass again. He's about to attempt to attempt. But Coley passed to C Antonio Forney instead. Forney drives to the basket. SLAM DUNK!!!

4:00, Up 85-59
...
(fast forward) MARS on a mini 4-0 run. Perhaps that would stop our onslaught? Coley receives the pass. Coley takes a shot. Coley hits a three ball from DEEP! Triple #13.

2:50, Up 88-63
...
(MARS hitting a FT, and then later a FG. An unsuccessful play we ran not involving Coley. A miss by MARS) PG Shea Wheat is looking to make a pass. The pass is taken by Coley. Coley shoots. Coley fills it up from long range. #14

1:58, Up 91-63

MARS' SF Greg Kellum with a beautiful looking three pointer. Kellum having a good game, 22 pts, 6-9 3PT. But too bad for Kellum, perhaps no one will ever remember his performance in this game

A miss by Coley (he's human). Another 3 by MARS' Kellum (25 pts, 7th trey). Will Coley strike back? Coley fakes a 3. Same play earlier, Coley sent a pass to C Antonio Forney. Forney drives and scores

We steal. A basket by SF Sam Millar. MARS hitting 2 FTs. 0:08 left. We hits another 3! Nope it's not Coley, it's by PG Shea Wheat.

Final score: Marshall - 74, USC - 98

Notes
  1. On a different circumstance, MARS would have probably won this game, given the way they played today. They shot well, even from the outside, 10-16 3PT
  2. SG Kaniel Coley "only" scored 35 pts combined the past 2 games prior today, and has not shot well lately. Well, Coley is here to stay. Other PAC 12 coaches are probably burning the midnight oil now, figuring out ways on how to stop him

Game #8

Postby randy » Thu Nov 21, 2013 8:57 am

12/13/01: Arkansas (4-4) @ USC (6-1)

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: 1-3-1
2. Offense focus: Balanced (fast)
Tip off (1st Half)

15:57, Up 6-0
ARK 0-6 FG

10:54, Up 10-7

7:41, Up 16-9

3:59, Up 20-17

Halftime, Up 28-26

Highlights
  • Both teams have struggled in their shooting, in this primarily a defensive match. ARK 34% FG, while we're only slightly better at 42%
  • Stats are almost even across all categories; we're only slightly ahead in pts in the paint, but offsets it on their small advantage in fast break pts

Start of 2nd Half

14:30, Up 39-33
We'll now shift to Favor Inside, as we found more success there.

11:33, Up 47-40
SG Kaniel Coley struggling, 1-11 FG. SF Anthony Bryant with a double-double

7:59, Up 55-43
Coley finally gets something to fall. Only his 2nd FG

3:15, Up 73-55

Final score: Arkansas - 60, USC - 77

Box Score

REB: +16
AST: +4
TO: -2
Paint: +16
2nd Chance : +18
Fast Break: +4
Notes
  1. Our rebounding was responsible for this win; 17 off rebs resulting to 21 2nd chance points
  2. We need to be able to contain SG Kaniel Coley's shot selection, as he gets to streaky at times. It's good if he's making them, but it will also cost us some losses against defensive-oriented teams during the NCAA tournament. Arkansas is one such team that has a talent level that we could face during the tournament. We didn't outshoot them today; we just outworked them on the boards
  3. As an interim solution, we will be using favor inside focus while Coley is on the floor, to minimize attempts from 3. I will also have to change Coley's shot preferences, maybe add some driving penetration among his arsenal of shots

Game #10 - Start of Conference Play

Postby randy » Thu Nov 21, 2013 10:58 am

12/13/01: UCLA (4-5, 0-0) @ USC (8-1, 0-0)

Scouting Report
  1. Primary defense: M2M
  2. Offense focus: Balanced (fast)

Tip off (1st Half)

16:00, Up 12-1
UCLA 0-4 FG, 4 turn overs

9:16, Up 27-12
SG Kaniel Coley scoring straight 8 pts in a 10-0 run

7:03, Up 30-14
SG Kaniel Coley just hit his 3rd trey. Coley in double figures with 11 pts

3:19, Up 40-21

Halftime, Up 48-26

Highlights
  • Our offensive execution was excellent in the 1st half; 49% FG, 11 asts, only 3 turn overs. Also, we did not force too many 3s, even if SG Kaniel Coley was on the floor.
Top Performers
  • USC: C Antonio Forney, 10 pts, 9 rebs
  • UCLA: PG Omar English, 9 pts

Start of 2nd Half

15:55, Up 52-31

10:40, Up 55-45

Notes
  1. A game of two-halves for us, in terms of offense. We didn't shoot well in the 2nd half, and committed 10 turn overs.
  2. However, our rebounding was consistent the entire game, and helped us kept the game out of reach from UCLA
  3. UCLA shot 9-27 3PT. UCLA's starting guards both had a great game, often leaving their defenders behind to get an open shot.

Revisiting Strategies

Postby randy » Thu Nov 21, 2013 1:56 pm

Offense
  1. Sets
    • Primarily Motion
    • Started practicing Triangle
  2. Focus
    • Favor Inside (default)
    • Balanced (alternative)
  3. Pace: 3
  4. Freedom: Zero

Rebounding
  1. Offensive: 9
  2. Defensive: 10

Defense (half-court)
  1. Sets
    • Mixed during 1st half, e.g. 60% m2m, 20% 2-3 zone, 20% 1-2-2 zone
    • Situational during 2nd half
    • Double team everyone, except PG, when using m2m defense
  2. Intensity: 7

Defense (pressure)
  1. Sets: 2-2-1 full court
  2. Frequency: 10

Game #11

Postby randy » Thu Nov 21, 2013 2:54 pm

12/30/01: Stanford (7-4, 0-1) @ USC (9-1, 1-0)

Scouting Report
  1. Primary defense: M2M
  2. Offense focus: Balanced (slow)

Tip off (1st Half)

15:19, Tied at 3

11:07, Down 9-10
Were shooting 36% FG, 4 turn overs

6:16, Up 19-11
Fast break plays off STAN's turn overs helped us get some easy points

3:41, Up 25-18
SG Kaniel Coley hits back-to-back treys

Halftime, Up 38-26

Highlights
  • On our pressure defense, the using 2-2-1 FC exclusively generated numerous steals on STAN's back court, and we got a lot of easy baskets in transition (15 in 1st half)
  • On offense, it is still unknown if a slower pace is the better approach, with the premise that it would generate better looks and increase our FG%. Our 54% FG is misleading, since we had a lot of layups in transition
Adjustments
  • Defense: Use m2m exclusively. Lower def intensity (we had 11 fouls during the 1st half)

Start of 2nd Half

11:37, Up 50-34

6:49, Up 52-37

3:34, Up 61-39

Final score: Stanford - 43, USC - 73

Box Score
Coley 17, 0, 3, 5-15 3PT
Millar 13, 8, 4 2 stls, 3 tos (*)
Forney 12, 3, 1, 2 stls
Bailey 10, 5, 1, 2 stls
Bryant 8, 9, 0
Wheat 7, 3, 6, 6 stls, 3 tos
Dare 4, 6, 0
Parker 2, 1, 0, 4 tos

REB: +13
AST: +9

Fast Break: +15

Notes
  1. The results on defense were encouraging. We picked up a lot of steals (14) due to full court pressure all the time, and low opp FG% because of our constant double teams. Those steals turned into easy fast break pts (19)
  2. PG Shea Wheat seems perfect fit for the 2-2-1 FC press, with 6 steals
  3. Even if we shifted to Favor Inside focus, we still managed to launch enough shots from the outside. We connected on 7-19 3PT, 5 treys coming from SG Kaniel Coley

7:49, Down 13-14

3:27, Up 29-16
SG Kaniel Coley spreading fire on our cold offense, scoring 10 pts in the current 16-2 run

Halftime, Up 34-18

Highlights
  • Our objectives on defense were met superbly in the 1st half, getting 6 steals en route to 16 turn overs for WASH. Also, WASH shot 11 less FGAs than us. WASH did not have a single fast break point
  • We got a modest 8 fast break pts, which counts a lot in a defensive-oriented game like this. Our 9 turn overs still too many and can be improved

    Adjustments
    • Defense: Use m2m exclusively

    Start of 2nd Half

    15:58, Up 39-24

    11:43, Up 47-33

    Notes
    1. Our defense wins this game for us again. Final defensive metrics: 10 steals, 21 turn overs, only 1 off reb for WASH, 40% FG for WASH
    2. On offense, SG Kaniel Coley provided the spark once again. Coley's shot selection has improved, since we made changes on strategy (e.g. slow pace, focus inside)

1/6/02: Oregon St (4-8, 2-1) @ #24 USC (11-1, 3-0)

Scouting Report
  1. Primary defense: M2M
  2. Offense focus: Balanced (slow)
  3. Key Player: Sr SG Casey Robertson (16.3 ppg, 2-time All Conf)

Tip off (1st Half)

15:16, Up 11-7

7:50, Up 22-13
Good game for SF Sam Millar, 9 pts, 7 rebs

1:11, Up 37-24
SG Kaniel Coley scored 10 of our last 14 pts

Halftime, Up 39-27

Highlights
  • We shot 54% FG in the 1st half, including 4-9 3PT. We dished out 11 assists, and turned the ball over only 5 times
  • Defense was not bad, forcing ORST to 8 turn overs, 40% FG, and zero 2nd chance pts. We only allowed 2 fast break pts.

    Adjustments
    • Defense: Use m2m exclusively
    • Off Rebounding: Increase to 10

    Start of 2nd Half

    15:49, Up 47-32
SF Sam Millar continues to have a good game, 14 pts, 8 rebs

    11:34, Up 50-39
ORST went to as close as 8 pts earlier. Our rotation is shortened; both C Elliott Dare and PG Antonio Parker with 4 fouls

    7:56, Up 55-46
ORST starting to capitalize on our penalty situation. Lowering def intensity to 5

    3:26, Up 61-54
Our lead increased to 14, on the heels of a back-to-back triple by SG Kaniel Coley. But ORST bouncing back with 7-0 run prior to the last media timeout

USC: C Antonio Forney missing 2 FTs. Forney is 2-8 FTs today
    ORST: Turnover
USC: SF Sam Millar hits both FTs. Millar with 20 pts

    2:45, Up 63-54

    We'll slow down the game

ORST missed their shots on consecutive possessions. C Elliott Dare converts on his 3-pt play opportunity. We go up by 12, which seals the game for us.

    Notes
    1. ORST was more aggressive offensively than us in the 2nd half, finishing the game with 7 off rebs, and converting 21-29 FT. Timely shots from SF Sam Millar and SG Kaniel Coley were enough to hold our lead
    2. Despite ORST's 19 turn overs, we didn;t get too many fast break pts (6). Our FT shooting were below par today, 13-22

Game #14

Postby randy » Fri Nov 22, 2013 12:38 am

1/10/02: Washington St (7-6, 3-1) @ #17 USC (12-1, 4-0)

Scouting Report
  1. Primary defense: 2-3
  2. Offense focus: Balanced (slow)
  3. Key Player: Sr C Ricardo Gunn (14.2 ppg, 1-time All Conf)

Tip off (1st Half)

15:33, Up 11-5
Another good start for SF Sam Millar, 9 pts, 4-5 FG

11:36, Up 16-10

6:38, Up 27-16
SG Kaniel Coley with 2 treys

2:40, Up 30-22
Both teams FG shooting dipped below 40%

Halftime, Up 32-25

Highlights
  • Our defense limited WASHST to only 29% FG and 8 turn overs. It was WASHST's 8-10 FT performance keeping them in the game
  • We found more success hitting from behind the arc (6-11 3PT) rather than inside, because of WASHST's 2-3 zone. Overall we only shot 36% FG, and committed 6 turn overs. We only got to the FT line twice

    Adjustments

    Notes
    1. It wasn't a pretty game for most part. Until SF Sam Millar took matters to his own hands. Millar on good form lately, averaging 26 ppg over the past 2 games.
    2. Before Millar's explosion in the 2nd half, our offense was not in the best form. But we kept the lead because of our defense yet again. For the game, WASHST shot only 24% FG and committed 18 turn overs. Since we made adjustments on our defense, we have stifled opponents to less than 40% FG and forcing an average of almost 20 turn overs

Game #15

Postby randy » Fri Nov 22, 2013 2:06 am

1/13/02: #17 USC (13-1, 5-0) @ Colorado (8-6, 3-2)

Scouting Report
  1. Primary defense: M2M
  2. Offense focus: Balanced
  3. Key Player: Sr SF Andrea Thompson (16.8 ppg, 3-time All Conf)

Tip off (1st Half)

15:48, Up 10-2
COL has 2 freshmen starting at the 4 and 5 spot. We are taking the ball at their heart of their defense, scoring all 10 pts inside the paint

11:49, Up 12-9

8:44, Down 14-18
A series of turn overs leading to easy transition pts by COL. I called a time out to stop momentum

3:57, Down 23-24
Our last 9 pts were inside the paint. We're doing a good job grabbig 8 off rebounds, but our turn overs (9) keep on preventing us to take momentum

Halftime, Down 29-37

Highlights
  • Our defense bogged down towards the end of the half. COL shot 54% FG in the first half, and they have done a good job taking care of the ball with only 5 turn overs
  • We're 0-6 3PT. SG Kaniel Coley a non-factor, scoreless. If not for our 9 off rebs (leading to 8 2nd chance pts), this is a blow out game already

    Adjustments
    • Defense: Use m2m exclusively
    • Off focus: Change to Heavy Inside

    Start of 2nd Half

    15:14, Down 33-49
COL wisely going to 2-3 zone to shut down the lane. We went back to balanced offense. COL can't seem to miss in the 2nd half, including 2 treys from SF Andrea Thompson

    11:32, Down 41-52

We cut the lead down further to 9, 43-52

COL scored 4 straight including a break away layup, and we're staring at a 13-pt deficit again, 43-56

We managed a 7-0 run, including the 1st basket of SG Kaniel Coley, to go closer at 50-56. COL scored 3 pts since then

    6:28, Down 50-59

2 FTs by SF Anthony Bryant and a big 3 by SF Sam Millar, and we're only 4 pts down. However, COL's SF Andrea Thompson answerd back with a 3 of his own. Thompson has been huge for COL, 20 pts, 7-10 FG. C Antonio Forney fouled out, and COL added 2 more FTs

    4:35, Down 55-64

SF Sam Millar with another 3, but COL responded back with 5 straight pts

    2:41, Down 58-69

We go Heavy Outside. Look for 3s

We hit 3 consolation treys, but COL got enough FGs at the end to finish whatever hope we have

    Final score: USC - 67, Colorado - 77

    Box Score

    Bryant 9, 5, 3
    Coley 9, 2, 1, 3 tos, 3-10 3PT
    Bailey 4, 3, 0, 3 tos
    Wheat 2, 1, 2, 5 stls
    Parker 0, 0, 4, 3 tos
    Perry 0, 0, 0

    Notes
    1. We didn't do a good job disrupting COL's offensive flow. They dished out 22 assists, en route to shooting 54% FG. It didn't helped us that they were on fire from the outside, going 8-11 3 PT
    2. We tried to offset COL's good shooting with our rebounding, particularly on the offensive glass (13 off rebs) giving us 17 2nd chance pts. But it wasn't enough in the end
    3. SF Andrea Thompson had a good game for COL, finishing with 22 pts, 7-10 FG, 5 rebs.
