2018 NCAA Tournament

East Region

Sweet 16

(5) La Salle Explorers vs. (1) UConn Huskies

The venue for this Sweet 16 would be the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, we are quite found of this venue as we’ve won 3 straight Atlantic 10 Tournament Titles in this building. From the outset this would be completely different than the St. Joe’s game, both defenses brought their “A” games in order to advance. Sloppy at times, pure brutal in some instances the game was not pretty. We could care less as we took a 33-27 lead into halftime. In the second half UConn would flex its muscle in the paint, outscoring us 34-16 in the paint the score was tied at 60 at the two minute mark. A midrange shot by Eddie Robinson put us up by two. On UConn’s next possession Adam Fox dunk tied the game at 62. A Matt Graves turnover was converted into a layup by UConn. Down two we looked to Eddie, his missed three was rebounded by UConn and we fouled immediately. Mickey Arceneaux made the first but missed the second, we grabbed the rebound and a timeout was called. In the huddle I was faced with a tough choice, down 62-65 with 20 seconds left do we try to extend the game or go for the tie. Matt Graves found Eddie Robinson coming off a screen, his three point attempt bounced off the back of the rim into the hands of a UConn player. We gave it a great shot but fell 62-68 in the end.

La Salle Player of The Game: Eddie Robinson 16 points.

2018/2019 Non-Conference Review

Perfection is defined as : the state or condition of being perfect: the act of making something perfect or better : the act of perfecting something: something that cannot be improved : something that is perfect. Perfection can also be defined as the La Salle Explorers in the non-conference.

After two wins to start the season we were on our way to South Carolina for the Charleston Classic. In a 90-73 win against Virginia Tech Marcus Romar’s double-double 21-11 led five La Salle players in double figures. Three of the double figures scorers were bench players. Matt Graves came close to a triple double getting 11-7-7 in a 61-41 against Butler in the semifinals. Eddie Robinson’s 20 points and Peter Lutz 16 brought us the championship in a 91-83 win against Arizona State.

Four straight road wins were capped off with a 80-61 win against Georgetown. Number 19 New Mexico made the trip east for our last non-conference game. Marco Williams scored 14 off the bench in a 73-60 win. Eddie Robinson led us in scoring with 19.

We finished non-conference play 13-0 with a national rank of 10.

2018/2019 Atlantic 10 Review

Not only were we playing well but other teams around the league were, we started off A10 with back to back games against ranked opponents. The Liacouras Arena was rocking as we played number 20 Temple a visit. At halftime we were up 39-29 and seemingly would take control in the second half . . . . and then Bernard Robinson of Temple went off in the second half. Hitting 5 three’s in the second half he would finish with 31 points. His 5th 3 put Temple up 80-79 with 8 seconds left. Matt Graves rushed the ball up the court, his shot went off the rim. Marcus Romar rebounded and dunked home the ball just before time ran out. In addition to his game winning shot, Marcus scored 26 points.

Against 25th ranked St. Bonaventure led by Matt Graves and Peter Lutz broke open a close game in the second half en route to a 82-67 win. Matt had 19 points and 10 rebounds. Peter scored 18 points off the bench. In a 91-70 win at Richmond, Matt Graves dished out 17 assists. We ran our record to 17-0 heading on the road for a game at UMass. Led by Tim Barber and Jeff Ward the Minutemen shocked the college basketball world knocking us off 80-74. We rebounded from the loss with a 64-46 win over 22nd ranked Duquesne. On senior night Matt Graves recorded a triple double in a 73-58 win against Richmond. He scored 15, grabbed 10 boards and handed out 10 dimes.

We went 13-3 in Atlantic 10 play to finish the season 26-3 overall with a national rank of 8.

2019 Atlantic 10 Tournament

(1) La Salle Explorers vs. (9) St. Louis Billikens

We dominated the paint scoring 46 points in route to a 94-76 win to open the Atlantic 10 Tournament. Matt Graves narrowly missed his second straight triple double. He scored 18, had 10 assists and 9 rebounds. St. Louis could not handle our fast break as we scored 34 points in transition. Led by Aaron Slider’s 13 our bench scored 41 points.

La Salle Player of The Game: Matt Graves 18 points 10 assists 9 rebounds.

(1) La Salle Explorers vs. (5) St. Joseph’s Hawks

This game was eerily similar to the game we play against St. Joe’s in last season’s NCAA Tournament. Both teams were getting up and down the court as we took a 42-41 lead into halftime. Our bench once again gave us a massive left scoring 36 as a unit. Peter Lutz led the bench brigade with 15 points and 9 rebounds. Eddie Robinson’s layup with 40 seconds left put us up 77-71 and finally gave us some breathing room as we ended up winning 81-71.

La Salle Player of The Game: Peter Lutz 15 points 9 rebounds.

(1) La Salle Explorers vs. (3) Duquesne Dukes

Coming out of halftime with a 45-35 lead we struck quick to open the second half. Eddie Robinson made a three, that was followed up with a three from Matt Graves. Derrick Morrison recorded two dunks, Ryan Jones made a mid-range two and Marcus Romar’s dunk capped off a 14-0 run to start the second half. In a period of less than 3 minutes we extended our lead to 24 points. Duquesne would never recover as we coasted to a 76-64 win. Derek had 19 and 7 rebounds. Eddie Robinson scored 12, while Matt dished out 8 assists.

La Salle Player of The Game: Derrick Morrison 19 points 7 rebounds.

2nd Round

(2) La Salle Explorers vs. (15) Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens

I wasn’t enamored with being shipped out west, however the fact we are playing our 2nd and 3rd round games in Philadelphia gives us a huge advantage. Delaware was rattled from the start turning the ball over on their first five possessions. We came out of the gates with a 16-2 run and we never looked back. Delaware was out of their depth, a 42-24 halftime lead was just the beginning of things to come. The starters rested the bulk of the second half, our reserves didn’t let us increasing the lead. A 79-56 win meant we were advancing in the tournament. We have been a balanced team all season and this game was no different. Derek Morrison led us with 14 points, Eddie Robinson had 13, Peter Lutz had 12, Aaron Slider had 8, and Marco Williams had 7.

La Salle Player of The Game: Derek Morrison 14 points.
