We checked out 10 players who are transferring and made offers to two. I nearly fell out of my chair when they both called saying they were accepting our scholarship offer and looking forward to playing for me.

C Andrew Kresse, 6-10 So, 7.4 ppg, 5.5 rpg for Notre Dame last year, 2.0/4.0 stars—attitude problems

PF Awvee Calton from CSU Bakersfield was picked by the Minnesota Timberwolves, but unfortunately just missed out on being a 1st round draftee:

We primarily target good high school players in the Northeast initially and begin to contact them, view films, and try to get some to visit. We then expand our net to include quality JC players. We struggle to get players interested, but the task seems a little easier than it had been at CSU Bakersfield.

We made an early offer to a stud high school center, but weren’t surprised when he shot us down and opted for Ohio State. We than made an offer to a high school PG and rose to the top of his schools of interest, but then his stock slipped and we got word that he needed to work harder. We withdrew the offer and offered that scholarship to a much higher rated junior college PG whom we had been courting. He accepted and our recruiting was done for the year.

PG Vernard Strickland, 6-0 JC So, Stuarts Draft, VA, 2.7 GPA: 16.7 ppg, 3.7 apg, 2.4 rpg, 2.5 spg, 0.5 bpg. Excellent ball-handling skills, very good passer, good scorer and outside shooter, good at stealing the ball, weak rebounder. Ranked #69 in the nation; Overall Rating: B.

Since a couple players were near going onto academic probation and several other players had so-so academic records, I matched up a number of players with tutors throughout the summer. Overall the results were positive.

Tough start to practice with trash talking, hard fouls, and fight threats. One guy who was in the middle of much of this was Andrew Kresse. I call him and another player, Chris Babul. Both were defensive but we’ll see how things unfold.

Later in the practice season Chris Babul again pushed a couple guy hard. I again talked with him which did no good, so I suspended him for a week.

Freshman PF Kory Finley has great potential, but also needs a lot of development. Since he won’t get much on-court time this year, I decide to redshirt him. But I mess up the paperwork and miss the deadline, so remains on our active roster and will play this year.

At the beginning of the season all players, with the exception of Bobby Havens, now have good GPA’s. Even with near constant tutoring, Bobby still has a GPA well below what will qualify him to play for us next year. That means more tutoring for him. His failure to improve his GPA even with the intensive tutoring thus far makes me a little nervous.
