I'll Be a Son of a Shark

Mar 17: We stuck around to root on the Falcons in the late game, but it was painful to watch as the Falcons were totally lambasted by Kansas 79-41 and were never in the game.

5 seed Syracuse blew out Cincinatti 69-39 and will be our opponent on Sunday, as we once again play a rematch.. this time trying to avenge a 73-64 home loss to the Orange back in November.

Mar 18: NCAA Tourney 2nd round:(5) #21 Syracuse(22-8) vs (4) #7 UNM(27-5)

When we lost to the Orange earlier this year, it was because we had a colossal fail at 2 things we normally do well: Rebounding, and protecting the lane. Their 7 foot 300 lb behemoth in the middle in the middle Ricky Stephenson had 19 pts, 18 rebounds against us. The few times that Martin Ray has struggled defensively in his career have been against these much bigger bruisers. Stephenson is coming off a 30 pt, 15 rebound performance against Cincinatti in round one. In order to have a chance tonight we have to keep him closer to his season averages of 16.6 pts, and 11 rebs. We'll probably start in zone tonight to give Ray more help. We may need to fit Inyo with an oxygen mask so that he can give us more than his usual 15 minutes tonight. The defensive play of our big men... ALL of our big men tonight is key. Then of course is their 3-2 zone. We'll see tonight how much we've matured as a team since November. They are bigger, but we are quicker and more athletic. Houston and Angelli must have good nights scoring. We need our A+ game tonight.

We accomplish our main objectives in the first half.. we control the boards (21-13, 6-2). and we play solid post defense holding Stephenson to 6 and edging them in points in the paint 16-14. Against the zone their perimeter guys hurt us some and they shoot 50% from the field. With some foul trouble we can't leave the zone in the 2nd half though, so it's a matter of "pick your poison". I don't think their perimeter guys can beat us... we already know their post players can. It was a war in the first half, but we take a 39-36 lead into intermission. Also, Larry Guy was put in for our last defensive possesion of the half, stole the ball and went length of the court for a slam dunk! It's been so hard to get Larry minutes this year, but it seems that whenever his number is called, he is ready.

Very proud of our team. We executed the game plan perfectly. Dominated the boards over all (41-31, 13-6) and kept Stephenson under control. The monster still had 15 points 12 rebounds, but Ray didn't back down from him in this one, and all our bigs played well. And we had just enough offense, thanks to 24 forced turnovers and 21 more shots to keep them chasing us.

Frontcourt: A

Not a lot of scoring from Angelli tonight, but he did what he had to do...4 pts, 2 asts, 4 rebs, 3 stils
Johnson terrorized another team, defensively. Not sure how we replace what he brings to the table next year, but he deserves to be Conference defensive player of the year. 7 pts, 2 asts, 6 rebs, and matched his career high with 7 steals. Against the bigger stronger Orange he gave no ground.
Ray was 1/7 trying to use his agility to get around the Stepenson, but we werent concered about his offense in this game... we just needed him to defend and board well, which he did...4 pts, 13 rebs, 1 stl, 2 blocks

Inyo Jackson and Steve Tatum were excellent off the bench. also some offensive help from Petion.

Backcourt: B+
Conley 5 pts, 4 asts, 2 rebs. 2 tos in 21 minutes. Howie's not flashy but he's steady as a floor leader, and we needed that tonight
Houston 19 pts as the leading scorer of the game and our only player in double digit scoring. He stopped being a freshman a long time ago.

Good enough bench play from the guards.

Bench: B+

I said we needed strong play from ALL our bigs tonight and that's what we got. Inyo, 4 pts, 8 rebs in 18 minutes. Steve Tatum 4 pts, 2 rebs in 12 minutes.

Thompson and Stetson were positive elements in there 12 minutes each off the bench. And with both Thompson and Conley in foul trouble in the frst half Bullock gave us 4 pts in 8 minutes (3 TOs again, however)

Overall: A

We discussed at length about what beat us the first time around against the Orange, and refused to let them beat us the same way twice. Not a great game offensively, but Houston gave us enough. We paid attention to detail tonight and help defense was there when help defense needed to be there.

Final: UNM 69 Syracuse 61

Mar 23: NCAA Sweet Sixteen (4) #7 UNM (28-5) vs (1) #1 Memphis (33-2)

Postby CoachC » Thu Jan 30, 2014 11:06 am

The Tigers only losses came to Gonzaga on the road, and to #5 Houston in the Conference USA championship game. They started the season by winning the pre-season NIT and have rolled ever since. 3 of the teams they beat in the NIT were teams we played as well: Boston College, Maryland, and Georgia Tech.

The Tigers are led by their shooting guard Anthony Gainous averaging 18.1. The matchup between Gainous and Houston will be one to watch. They also rebound very well. We do seem to match up with them well, but we are going to have to play exceptionally well to advance to the regional final.

Their defense was very good in the first half, but ours was better. Still we didn't get our first lead til :58 of the half. We take a 1 pt lead into the locker room 24-23. A very even battle in the first half. We need to win the battle of turnovers and keep rebounding.

We continue to play the better defense in the 2nd half, but have turned the ball over too many times, and given them too many offensive rebounds. We are tied at the end of regulation 44-44, however after a Houston steal for a Johnson fast break layup and a stop on the Tigers last possesion. After a timeout Thompson had the chance to win it with a 3 from the top of the key, but the ball bounced away.

In the OT, Thompson made one of 2 freethrows with :11 for a 3 point lead, and they miss a long range 3 at the buzzer! WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER!

This was a war between two evenly matched teams. Both teams had difficulty taking care of the ball, as we turned the ball over 23 times to their 22. They edge us on the boards 48-46, but we allowed them 18 offensive rebounds mostly after the first half. Still they only edged us on second chance scoring 12 -10. Pts in the paint were 20-22, and fastbreak pts were 10-14. They also shot much better at the freethrow line which kept us from ever pulling away. They were 11-15 at the stripe, we were a miserable 6-13 including 5 big misses late in regulation and in the overtime. Our biggest lead was 6 in the OT, Their biggest lead was 8 very early in the game. We held them to 23.8 % shooting though, while shooting 35.5% which was just enough to get us the win.

Frontline: B+
Ray had 8 pts, 17 rebs, 1 stl, and an amazing 11 blocked shots!
Angelli had 6 pts, 5 rebs, 4 stls and a block
Johnson had some problems with their bigger post players, but 5 pts, 5 rebs, 1 stl, 1 block
Tatum was excellent off the bench. We needed someone other than Ray hitting the defensive boards in the 2nd half, however.

Backcourt: C
Houston easily one the battle between the two leading scorers with a game high 15 pts, 4 rebs, and handcuffed Gainous who was held to 8 pts. His one steal with 24 seconds remaining in regulation led to a game-saving fast break
The usual steady Conley had a subpar game with 4 pts, 3 rebs, but just 1 asts and 4 turnovers in 14 minutes.
Thompson was the only one perimeter player to give us anything off the bench tonight

Bench: C-
Tatum had 10 pts as our only other double digit scorer, along with 6 rebs, 2 stls in a season high 25 minutes.
Inyo gave good defense while he was in.
Thompson had 6 asts, 4 rebs, 1 stl, but also coughed the ball up 5 times in 31 minutes, but played good defense and helped out on Gainous quite a bit.
We had nothing at all from anyone else off the bench tonight.

Overall: A-
This was the top-ranked team in the nation after all, and we got the win. Our team defense was the deciding factor, the TIgers had no one in double figures, and that alone makes it hard to rate our performance any lower than this.

Mar 25: NCAA Regional Finals: (11) Kansas (20-14) vs (4) #7 UNM (29-5)

Postby CoachC » Thu Jan 30, 2014 12:52 pm

One game away from the Lobos first ever Final Four appearance. We need to play great post defense and rebound well in this one, something the Falcons were unable to do in getting blownout by the Jayhawks. They are led by their 6-7 215lb power forward Leon Sessoms who averages 15.5 pts, 11.3 rebs and he's the key guy we need to keep in check. Vernon Johnson is an outstanding defensive player, but he won't be able to do it alone. Smart team defense and good help will be required.

They manage just 3 field goals in the first half, but some silly fouls combined with a lot of questionable calls put them at the line enough times to stay in contact. Both Thompson and Conley pick up 3 personal fouls in the half, which means Bullock will have to play a lot of minutes in the 2nd half, with Stetson him backing him up. We need to shoot better ourselves than 37.9 and hit the boards harder, although our post defense was stellar again.

At the half we lead 26-19.

The officiating in this game was absolutely atrocius, and none of this crew should have been refereeing in NCAA tournament game. The incompetent zebras kept them in this game much longer than they should have been

Frontcourt: A-
Ray was finally more aggressive in the post tonight, but we still need him to take more than 8 shots. for the game he had 12 pts, 8 rebs, 2 stls, 3 blocks.
Johnson had 6 pts, 4 rebs, 5 big steals and a block, and played about as well as can be expected with Sessoms allowed to climb all over his back all night.
Angelli was our leading scorer 14 pts, 5 rebs, and 5 big steals of his own.
We had some big plays defensively from unexpected sources tonight as well. Sessoms was their only double digit scorer with 10 pts, 13 rebs. Considering how the idiots in stripes were calling the game, our post defense was very very good again.

Backcourt: C-

What few points they got from their guards tonight were mainly at the freethrow line.

Houston had a tough night offensively though going just 3/17 with 10 pts, 5 rebs

Conley and Thompson combined for just 23 minutes between them tonight because of foul problems and had just 2 pts, 1 ast combined. THey had just 1 turnover between them too, however and that was important.

In the biggest stage of his life Pat Bullock played exceptionally well off the bench in what could have been a nightmare.

Bench: C
Bullock played a crucial 15 minutes at the point tonight with 4 pts, 5 asts, and just 2 turnovers.
We had absolutely nothing again from any of the other guards off the bench.
The other key contributors were a couple of guys who have been struggling for minutes and gave us their all. In 8 minutes Larry Guy had 2 pts, 1 reb, and 2 HUGE steals near the end of the first half to keep the Jayhawks at bay. Gene Frederick played 6 big minutes too with Johnson and Angelli in a bit of foul trouble and had 2 stls that resulted in 2 run out baskets at a point in the game in the 2nd half when the stripes were doing their best to take the game away from us.

Overall: C+
Poor officiating made everything tough for us tonight, but we have to shoot better than 34.6 for the game. We needed a better presence on the boards as well, although with Sessoms getting away with mugging people for rebounds all night that wasn't easy. We won the game with our defense though, along with forcing 23 turnovers and outscoring them on the break 16-8. We also made all of our freethrows in the closing minutes to close things out.
