The Tigers only losses came to Gonzaga on the road, and to #5 Houston in the Conference USA championship game. They started the season by winning the pre-season NIT and have rolled ever since. 3 of the teams they beat in the NIT were teams we played as well: Boston College, Maryland, and Georgia Tech.
The Tigers are led by their shooting guard Anthony Gainous averaging 18.1. The matchup between Gainous and Houston will be one to watch. They also rebound very well. We do seem to match up with them well, but we are going to have to play exceptionally well to advance to the regional final.
Their defense was very good in the first half, but ours was better. Still we didn't get our first lead til :58 of the half. We take a 1 pt lead into the locker room 24-23. A very even battle in the first half. We need to win the battle of turnovers and keep rebounding.
We continue to play the better defense in the 2nd half, but have turned the ball over too many times, and given them too many offensive rebounds. We are tied at the end of regulation 44-44, however after a Houston steal for a Johnson fast break layup and a stop on the Tigers last possesion. After a timeout Thompson had the chance to win it with a 3 from the top of the key, but the ball bounced away.
In the OT, Thompson made one of 2 freethrows with :11 for a 3 point lead, and they miss a long range 3 at the buzzer! WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER!
This was a war between two evenly matched teams. Both teams had difficulty taking care of the ball, as we turned the ball over 23 times to their 22. They edge us on the boards 48-46, but we allowed them 18 offensive rebounds mostly after the first half. Still they only edged us on second chance scoring 12 -10. Pts in the paint were 20-22, and fastbreak pts were 10-14. They also shot much better at the freethrow line which kept us from ever pulling away. They were 11-15 at the stripe, we were a miserable 6-13 including 5 big misses late in regulation and in the overtime. Our biggest lead was 6 in the OT, Their biggest lead was 8 very early in the game. We held them to 23.8 % shooting though, while shooting 35.5% which was just enough to get us the win.
Frontline: B+
Ray had 8 pts, 17 rebs, 1 stl, and an amazing 11 blocked shots!
Angelli had 6 pts, 5 rebs, 4 stls and a block
Johnson had some problems with their bigger post players, but 5 pts, 5 rebs, 1 stl, 1 block
Tatum was excellent off the bench. We needed someone other than Ray hitting the defensive boards in the 2nd half, however.
Backcourt: C
Houston easily one the battle between the two leading scorers with a game high 15 pts, 4 rebs, and handcuffed Gainous who was held to 8 pts. His one steal with 24 seconds remaining in regulation led to a game-saving fast break
The usual steady Conley had a subpar game with 4 pts, 3 rebs, but just 1 asts and 4 turnovers in 14 minutes.
Thompson was the only one perimeter player to give us anything off the bench tonight
Bench: C-
Tatum had 10 pts as our only other double digit scorer, along with 6 rebs, 2 stls in a season high 25 minutes.
Inyo gave good defense while he was in.
Thompson had 6 asts, 4 rebs, 1 stl, but also coughed the ball up 5 times in 31 minutes, but played good defense and helped out on Gainous quite a bit.
We had nothing at all from anyone else off the bench tonight.
Overall: A-
This was the top-ranked team in the nation after all, and we got the win. Our team defense was the deciding factor, the TIgers had no one in double figures, and that alone makes it hard to rate our performance any lower than this.
Final: (OT) UNM 51, Memphis 48
