Mar 26: In Sunday's finals
#4 UCLA knocked off #3 Florida 71-52
#2 Arizona downed #5 Houston 72-61.

With no team east of the Mississippi in the Final Four, the talking heads at ESPN will no doubt be talking about how this has been a disappointing tournament.

We'll be facing Texas A&M nest Saturday. UCLA and Arizona will battle it out in a Pac 12 showdown.

Way to GO! Great win against #1 (well they WERE #1) Memphis!

Maybe they just won't carry the Final 4 on TV on the East Coast this year...they can always replace it with reruns of the Jersey Shore.

Final Four!!! One thing that's perfectly accurate in DDS:CB2 is the incompetence of the officials.

Last week's 20 point win over UConn came no surprise to Aggies fans. They watched their team blow out the Huskies by 29 back in November! The Aggies won the regular season Big Twelve title by 2 games, and played a tough non-conference schedule as well. Our only mutual opponent was their conference foe Kansas, from whom they took 2 out of 3. Losing to Kansas in the first round of the Big 12 tournament probably cost them seeding and rankings prior to the tournament, but rest assured this is a team that belongs here, and we are taking them very very seriously. Anyone that thinks we caught a break by not having to play Arizona or UCLA today needs to get off the pipe!

They are lead by wingman Ivin Keith who averages 19 pts a game, and almost 28 pts/g in the tournament, but they have some balanced scoring behind him. Our defense needs to be outstanding yet again. We have struggled offensively in this tournament though, and it's time for that to change. I think we need to shoot well over 40% tonight to win while keeping Keith in line.

Fortunately there is no Big 12 crew chief officiating the game tonight, or I may have gotten my first T before the opening tip!

With Angelli picking up 2 quick fouls at the outset we struggled to stop Keith who had himself a half. Our biggest problem however was a total lack of effort on the defensive boards. At the half we trail 31-37.

In the 2nd half we did a better but not terrific job on the defensive boards, much more importantly though, Angelli was able to stay out of foul trouble and turn the tables on Keith who not only was held scoreless in the 2nd half, but quickly got into his own serious foul trouble trying to guard the quicker Angelli on the dribble drive. When Keith picked up his 4th foul with 10:38 to go you could hear the wheels falling off the wagon. He finally fouled out with :58 to go desperately trying to stop the freight train known as Martin Ray on a breakaway dunk.

Frontcourt: A
Ray was one of 4 Lobos in double figures with 10 pts, 8 rebs, 4 stls and a block
Vernon Johnson couldn't get to the boards in this one (credit Ivin Keith's older brother Pete for doing a great job getting position throughout the game), but had 7 pts, 3 sls,and played good post defense.
Angelli was the difference maker in the 2nd half, determined to make Ivin Keith a non-factor in the 2nd half, he did just that and finished with 13 pts, 11 in the 2nd half, 4 asts, 4 rebs and 2 stls in 22 minutes.
Inyo and Larry Guy gave great play off the bench.

Backcourt: B+

Howie Conley had 13 pts, 6 asts , and although he struggled at times defeinsively against his opposite number, his willingness to take(and make) the open shots in this one were huge.
Houston was the games leading scorer with 18, and also pulled down a career high 8 rebs. His 5 turnovers were a couple too many but we'll give him a pass.
Not much help off the bench, again though.

Bench: C+
Inyo Jackson had his best game of the post-season with 7pts, 2 asts, 4 rebs, and 4 big blocks off the bench.
In a game uniquely fitted for him to get minutes, Larry Guy had 4 pts, 1 reb in 10 minutes, and played some solid defense on Keith at the end of the first half when Angelli was in foul trouble and it was clear that Stetson was too unndersized to get the job done, and Petion was out of his element.

Stetson's poor tournament play is a concern, but at least in this one there were factors involved that made it understandable.

Overall: B+
We finally shot the ball well (48.3 for the game), held them to 32.2 percent, and with the inspired play of Jon Angeli in the 2nd half were able to cut off the head of the snake and expand the lead heading to the finish line.

We play for the National Championship Monday night...take that Selection Commitee!

Final: UNM 78 Texas A&M 65

Mar 31: In the nightcap, #2 Arizona knocks off #4 UCLA 60-54. We played the deeply talented Wildcats a year ago very early in the season and lost. We well know what we are up against though, which helps. Last year's NCAA Player of the year and 1st team all American DuPree is still there, and he's still not the only thing we have to solve. We have matured since a year ago...enough to win? I dunno....I won't be getting much sleep in the next 48 hours.
