Coaching my way up

Coaching my way up

Postby SouthernRebel » Mon Dec 12, 2011 12:55 am

Hello. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is RJ Freeman. A dream of mine has just come true as I have been named head basketball coach at a div. 1 college. OK, it may not be Arkansas, Kentucky, or UCLA, but hey it is div 1.

A little about my background. I have always loved sports. I dreamed of someday playing in the NBA. But alas, I am only 5'10" and 170 lbs. and wasn't even good enough to play in college. Luckily I was a good baseball player and got a scholarship playing shortstop for Div 2 Arkansas Tech. After graduating college I spend 4 years coaching high school basketball, leading the Dover Pirates to a couple of state championships. I was then offered a position of assistant coach at my alma mater Ark. Tech. After 1 season I was given the head coaching job and won 2 conference championships in 3 seasons.

Then Div 1 University of Central Arkansas offered me the head coaching job. It looks like quite a challenge. UCA moved up to Div 1 in 2006 and have struggled ever since. They have never been able to win more than 4 conference games a year in that time. Last year they went 1-15 in conference and 5-24 overall. They give me an $80,000 contract for 3 years. They expect a conference championship.

My ambitions and academics are high, discipline and temper are average, and integrity is very high.

I plan to run a fairly up tempo game with tough defence. We will use motion offense and mostly man to man defense.

Conference V predictions:
1 Florida Gulf Coast
2 South Dakota St.
3 Winston Salem St.
4 SIU-Edwardsville
5 Seattle
6 Houston Baptist
7 North Dakota
8 South Carolina Upstate
9 North Carolina Central
10 North Florida
11 Bryant
12 Central Arkansas
13 Cal St Bakersfield
14 South Dakota
15 New Jersey Tech
16 Presbyterian

So they have us 12th. The good news is since we are already in the bottom conference, we can't go down.

my projected starters:

Tom Harrick PG 6'0" SR 2 stars
Daniel Seitz SG 6'3" FR 2 stars
Ivin Cole SF 6'8" JR 2 stars
Marc Rowe PF 6'8" SR 3 stars
Chris Reeves C 6'9" SO 3 stars

Nov 14 2011 Savannah St @ Central Arkansas
First game of the season. Home against Savannah St. Everything went our way and we kept a comfortable lead the whole game. We shot well and played good defense. My center Chris Reeves was player of the game with 27 points, 7 rebs. Marc Rowe PF had 17 points, 12 rebs. Maurice Tony-El came off the bench for 12 pts.
Final score: Central Arkansas 77 Savannah St. 56

Nov 17 2011 Cental Arkansas 1-0 @ Cal Poly 0-1
First road game. Tough game that went to the wire. We trailed most of the way, but our boys never gave up and got us the victory. Marc Rowe was player of the game with 20 points and 5 rebs. Center Chris Reeves had 17 points and 5 rebs. I decided to start Maurice Tony-El in place of Daniel Seitz at SG and he scored 19. My PG Tom Harrick had 10 assists.
Final score: Central Arkansas 77 Cal Poly 75

Nov 21, 2011 Coastal Carolina 0-2 @ Central Arkansas 2-0
Close game all the way. They out rebounded us and hit more 3 pointers but the difference in the game was fouls. They shot 10 out of 19 free throws while we hit 20 out of 28. My big man Chris Reeves was player of the game with 26 points and 11 rebs. Marc Rowe had 18 points.
Final score: Central Arkansas 76 Coastal Carolina 70

Nov 24, 2011 Central Arkansas 3-0 @ Colgate 1-2
Colgate completely outplayed us in the first half and my two big men got into foul trouble. But my boys showed lots of heart. We trailed 52-26 at halftime but out scored them 41-28 in the second half. Reeves had another solid game, 20 points 11 rebs
Final score: Colgate 80 Central Arkansas 67

Nov 28, 2011 Central Arkansas 3-1 @ Dartmouth 2-2
A tight game with 16 lead changes. In the end we out rebounded them and shot well, while keeping their shooting percentage down. The game was closer than the final score and I'm just glad to come out of there with a win. Chris Reeves is player of the game again, getting 30 points and 5 rebs. Marc Rowe had 15 points and 7 rebs.
Final score: Central Arkansas 76 Dartmouth 68

December 2011

December 1 Central Arkansas 4-1 @ Butler 2-2
Butler reminds us we are just a V conference team. It wasn't pretty. Reeves had another great game, 24 pts. 12 rebs, but he didn't get much help.
Final score: Butler 82 Central Arkansas 51

December 5 St. Bonaventure 3-2 @ Central Arkansas 4-2
Tight game that we were able to pull out in the end. Reeves had 20 pts, Marc Rowe had 18 pts 10 rebs.
Final score: Central Arkansas 88 St. Bonaventure 83

December 8 Central Arkansas 5-2 @ Idaho St. 4-3
The Bengals outplayed us the first half and led 49-31. We were never able to make up any points in the second half. Reeves had 34 pts.
Final score: Idaho St. 90 Central Arkansas 72

December 12 SMU 2-6 @ Central Arkansas 5-3
Both teams played well. They had a nice balanced attack while we once again got most of our scoring from the big boys. Reeves 27 pts, 11 rebs., Rowe 14 pts.
Final score: Central Arkansas 85 SMU 80

December 19 TCU 4-4 @ Central Arkansas 6-3
Our boys played a beautiful game and we were in control the whole way. Our starting SG Maurice Tony-El returned after missing the last 2 games with injuries and scored 19 points. Reeves had his usual game 25 pts.
Final score: Central Arkansas 88 TCU 78

December 26 Kent St.6-4 @ Cental Arkansas 7-3
Kent St was just too much for us, they won the rebounding battle and the game. Our biggest problem was that Reeves got in foul trouble and was only able to play 19 mins. He had 14 pts. PF Marc Rowe had a disappointing game, going 2 for 7 for 8 pts. Tony-El was high scorer with 15.
Final score: Kent St 82 Central Arkansas 75

Going into conference play I'm satisfied with how we are performing. We are shooting and rebounding well. We are 181 RPI.

Starter Stats:
Chris Reeves C 24.0 ppg 7.1 rpg. .709 fg% .533 ft%
Marc Rowe PF 13.2 ppg 5.9 rpg 1.1 apg .440 fg% .905 ft%
Ivin Cole SF 5.5 ppg 4.8 rpg 1.4 apg 1.4 spg .348 fg% .650 ft%
Maurice Tony-El SG 11.0 ppg 2.8 rpg 1.6 apg 1.0 spg .521 fg% .900 ft% .357 3pt%
Tom Harrick PG 5.4 ppg 2.7 rpg 6.5 apg .353 fg% .789 ft% .400 3p%

Reeves is second in the nation in FG% and the nice thing is he is just a sophomore

January 2, 2012 Central Arkansas 7-4 @ Winston Salem St.7-4
We travel to Winston Salem St. for our first conference game. Things didn't go as planned. They completely outplayed us. We had trouble shooting and they out rebounded us 41-27. They also went to the free throw line about twice as often as us. Reeves had an off night (for him) and went 7-15 for 15 pts. Daniel Seiltz came off the bench for 10 pts.
Final score: Winston Salem St 86 Central Arkansas 65

Jan 5, 2012 South Dakota 3-9 (0-1) @ Central Arkansas 7-5 (0-1)
A little closer than expected, they led 34-30 at halftime, but in the end a bear beats a coyote. Reeves had 23 pts.
Final score: Central Arkansas 71 South Dakota 63

Good non-conference play and RPI.

Re your first conference game: those road games can be hell.

Thanks PG I'm having lots of fun. That RPI was a misprint, it should have been 181.
