(5) Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens vs. (9) Ohio State Buckeyes

In recent years we have run into problems when playing against teams from the Big 10, blowout losses to Purdue and Michigan have knocked us out of the NCAA Tournament in recent seasons. Heading into our Sweet 16 game against Ohio State we were actually glad to be playing a Big 10 team, this was due to Ohio State upsetting top seeded Texas 69-68 in their last game. In the first half Ohio State did a good job of imposing their as they were able to slow tempo. Losing 35-31 at halftime I told the players they must play through the physical nature of the game. To start the half we threw a new wrinkle against the Buckeyes in the form of a 1-2-2 press, having not seen that on any of our game tapes they committed 5 quick turnovers which led to 11 points as we opened the half on an 11-0 run. After that run we never looked back in route to a 77-68 win. Glen Avery had 25 points while Jaraan Hall scored 11.

(5) Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens vs. (6) UNLV Runnin’ Rebels

Offensively I wouldn’t label us as a one man team, granted Glendon Avery was the only player to average double figures scoring but we had 4 players who averaged between 7 and 9 points per game. Everyone on the team knows their roles offensively and have shown an ability to step up when needed, today would have to be one of those days if we wanted to win as UNLV made it their mission to stop Glen at all costs. To stop him they unleashed a Diamond and One defense, it was working a Glen shot 2-10 in the first half. The rest of the team didn’t shoot much better as we went into the half down 33-22. Starting the second half we played even worse as we found ourselves down 51-31 with 13 minutes left in the game.

With our perimeter shooting off I made the call to go with a bigger lineup hoping that length would cause some turnovers to get some easy points as we couldn’t score in the half court. It was the first time all season we used the lineup of Watkins-Guinn-Marshall-Deren-Stanfield, one guard and four forwards. A 10-2 run led by our defense cut the deficit to 53-41 with nine minutes left. Two steals Guinn led to a dunk from Deren and a three by Watkins to make it 53-46 with less than eight minutes left. Over the next three minutes both teams struggled to score as UNLV maintained a 57-50 at the four minute mark.

The four forward lineup did its job but I needed shooters in the game so Glen and Jaraan Hall were put into the game. Back to back threes from Hall and Watkins cut UNLV’s lead to 57-56, UNLV responded with four straight points to hold a 61-56 lead with three minutes left. Deren rebounded a miss by Glen and dunked and got foul as he completed a three point play. After a stop on defense Glen finally hit a three to give us our first lead 62-61 with two minutes left. UNLV hit a three on their next trip but Stanfield scored a hook shot to tie the game at 64 with one minute remaining. UNLV missed on their next shot but grabbed the offensive rebound, with 10 seconds left their point guard hit a floater. I decided not to call a timeout so UNLV couldn’t set their defense, Glen missed a decent look at a three that went off the rim. Deren got the rebound and shot a hook shot that rimmed out, Marshall tapped the ball out to Watkins whose last second three went off the front of the rim sending UNLV to the Final Four. Glen was our only player in double figures with 12 points but shot 4-17 to get those 12 points.

CAA Tournament

Delaware Fightin Blue Hens (1) vs. Hofstra Pride (8)

I'll give Hofstra credit, their game plan was to slow it up and that's what they did. We only scored 64 points but at the end of the day they only scored 52 points. The slowed game created a limited amount of shots, however our shooters are better than their shoots and it showed through the course of the game. Glen Avery led us with 16 points while Mark Royten had 10 points
