2017-2018 Delaware Roster

Starters

#14 Donnie Watkins 3.5/4 Sr. Rs 6-0 170
#1 Glendon Avery 4.5/5 Fr 6-5 212
#40 Jason Marshall 3.5/4.5 Sr. 6-7 208
#45 Taliek Deren 4.5/5 So. 6-8 196
#25 Ray Stanfield 4/5 Jr. 6-7 216

Overview: Turnovers could be a problem with this team as the only Point Guard on the roster is Tim Fife who is sitting out the season due to being a transfer. Shooting won't be a problem as Watkins and Avery can flat out shoot. Our front line is undersized but extremely active and athletic.

Bench

#33 Jonte Guinn 3/4.5 So. 6-8 217
#11 Jaraan Hall 2/4 So. 6-5 174
#35 Eddie Howard 2.5/2.5 Sr. 6-8 214
#22 Mark Royten 2/4.5 Fr. Rs 6-8 215
#41 Nathan Williamson 2.5/3 Jr. 6-10 260
#24 Sam Landram 2/2 Sr. 6-8 202
#34 Brian Kanaskie 1.5/4 Fr. Rs 6-3 211
#52 Lamoni Nelson 1.5/4 Jr. 6-9 248
#32 Jerry Nabity 0.5/3 Fr. 6-7 238 (Redshirted)
#31 Casey Fowler 1.5/4 Fr. 6-7 229 (Redshirted)
#4 Tim Fife 3.5/4 Jr. 6-0 189 (Transfer Michigan)

Overall: Hall should get a lot of time off the bench seeing how he is the only guard we have off the bench, in terms of front court players we can throw a variety of people at other teams.

CAA Tournament

(1) Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens vs. (8) Virginia Commonwealth Rams

VCU came into this game determined to let anyone not named Glendon Avery beat him, between repeated double teams and defenses such as a Diamond and 1 VCU did everything they could. In theory their plan work as Avery scored 12 points, however they spent so much focus on Avery that we had 7 guys score between 8-12 points. Offensively VCU didn’t have much punch and we cruised to a 75-60 win. Taliek Deren scored 12 points and grabbed 7 rebounds, and Lamoni Nelson had 10 points and 7 rebounds off the bench.

(1) Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens vs. (4) Old Dominion Monarchs

Old Dominion is known for being a strong half court team, in our first meeting they held us to a season low 43 points. The game plan was to get them into a running game, I figured if they tried to get in a running game they would play right into our hands and our depth would wear them down. They strategy in theory was great but midway through the first half ODU was beating us at our own game, they did a marvelous job of breaking our press. In addition to them beating us at our game they did a great job of harassing Glendon Avery who shot 2-7 in the first half, we were lucky to only be down 38-46 at halftime. The dilemma I faced was to either continue with our strategy or try to slow the game down in the second half, I stayed course figuring they would eventually wear down playing at our tempo. The never did and late in the game with them up 71-52 their fans broke out with an “overrated, overrated,” chant. A conference tournament title wasn’t in the cards this season as we lost 64-76. Avery had 13 points but shot only 5-16, Ray Stanfield had 12 points and Lamoni Nelson and Jaran Hall each had 11 points.

(5) Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens vs. (12) BYU Cougars

Glendon Avery is our leading scorer as well as our best player, as of late he has been struggling offensively as defenses have keyed into him. Heading into our opening tournament game against BYU my job was to come up with a plan to get Glen going. Practices leading up to the game we spent a lot of time setting screens to free Glen and having him attack defenses without the ball. First play of the game we set three screens to get Glen and he responded by hitting a three. Next time down the court Glen faked spotting up for a three and cut backdoor for a layup. Donnie Watkins found Glen off a curl for a mid-range jumper and then Glen made another three which resulted from a great pick by Taliek Deren. BYU called a timeout as Glen had outscored them 10-0 to start the game. Once we established Glen everything else fell into place on offense, we never looked back shooting 57% in route to a 74-60 win. Glen had 26 points on 10-14 shooting and Watkins had 11 points.

(5) Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens vs. (4) LSU Tigers

In coaching you head into some game feelings apprehensive about a particular matchup, sometimes you feel really good about a particular matchup. I really felt good about playing LSU, they were a good team but in looking at the tapes I felt we matched up extremely well. They are a small team who rely on perimeter play, teams with good big men have cost us problems but we wouldn’t have to worry about that. In terms of the backcourt, despite them being an SEC team I feel our guards are better than their guards. They scored the first 6 points of the game, we responded by going on a 19-2 run to go up 11 early on. LSU’s guards are smallish and our length in the backcourt was giving them fits, defensively we were great forcing 14 first half turnovers. Our defense fueled us to a 41-23 lead at the half, we knew they couldn’t beat us. We breezed through the remainder of the game advancing to the Sweet 16 with a 81-63 win. Glen Avery led the way with 26 points, off the bench Lamoni Nelson had 17 and Jaraan Hall had 12.

Just read through this entire thread and I love it! You have turned Delaware into a perennial tournament team and are able to lure some elite players to your program. Great job and good luck in the Sweet 16!

Question: do you play your games or do you sim them?
