Will Wynn- Slow and steady and straight to the top

Postby Wayne23 » Wed Apr 10, 2013 12:26 pm

3/12: Selection Day. I expect us to be #1 in the East.

Yep, #$1 East. Illinois #2, Alabama #3, Pitt #4, Syracuse #5.

Florida is #1 in the Midwest.

Oregon #1 South.

Michigan State #1 West.

It’s Cal ST. Bakersfield first. 17-14, 6-8, finished 6th in conf., won the tourney and the NCAA play in. They have the proverbial two chances.

3/16: 63-34. +1, +13, 43-26%. Fouls- 13-20. If we RB like this we’ll get knocked off early.

17, 10, 3, 1, 2 for Wall, 15, 3, 2, 2 for hare, 6, 9, 4, 3, 4 for Reed.

#9 seed, Oklahoma, 19-11 in the second round. Their 2 can score. I don’t think they can stay with us.

3/18: 71-47. They hung with us for the first half. Then we got serious.

+14, +9, 41-35%. Fouls- 9-22. Rebounding was better but 17 TOs. If these guys think they can’t lose, they will.

29, 10, 3, 3 for Wall, 11, 13, 6, 2, 1 for Reed, 13, 9, 2, 1, 2 for Thurman.

UConn lost in the first round of the Big East tourney, finished 14-14, and was not invited anywhere. Will the job open up?

#5 seed, #25 ranked Syracuse, 20-11 is next. Beat them by 35 at our place. They lost their 3 to grades. Their strength is outside.

3/23: 65-34. We fell behind early, as usual. The challenge in this one was that Sharp played exactly 12 minutes due to fouls. Fortunately, Stidham was terrific in his place.

We were down 5-11, and from there we went 29-4 for the rest of the half, going in up by 19. We simply extended it in the 2nd.

+11, +4, 44-27%. Fouls- 12-10. First time we commit more fouls than the opponent in a LONG time.

13, 18, 3 for Wall, 12 each for Thurman, Hare and Stidham, 6 and 10 for Reed.

#$2 seed, #6 ranked 28-5 Illinois is next. They’re the toughest team we’ve faces. Tough at every spot except the 3. We’ll need to be at the top of our form.

3/25: 61-39. Way easier than expected, they led 3-2, and we ran away and hid from there on.

+8, +5, 31-25%. Fouls- 10-15. Their D was very good, ours was terrific!

16, 13, 1, 2, 5 for Wall, 12, 10, 1, 1, 1 for Thurman, 14, 7, 4, 2, 1 for Reed, 14, 1, 2, 1, 1 for Sharp. Back to the Final Four!

Final Four, round of four

Postby Wayne23 » Wed Apr 10, 2013 4:48 pm

#4 ranked, 31-3, Michigan State vs. #3 ranked, 34-2 Oregon in the other game.

We face #2 ranked, 36-1 Florida. Their only loss was to #16 Alabama, by 6. They play great D. Not much bench, four players really, their 3 is weak. This one will challenge us. No easy teams still playing.

4/1: Down 3, 17:22. #2 on Sharp, 14:28, down 6. Damn! Their PG is giving it to us. Down 4, 6:33. Down 4, 3:11. Mini-run, 22-20 at the half., A REAL defensive battle.

+1, -3, 25-25%. Fouls are 6-6. Can’t get much more even.

Down 3, 14:44. Down 6, 11:11. I go to man, level 8, double the PG. #3 on Sharp, down 5, 6:44. I leave Sharp in.

Down 1, 4:02. We’re rolling, up 4, 3:02. Up 9, 1:54. #4 on Sharp, 1:00.

Going O/D, taking the air out. They hit a 3, steal, hit another 3, up 3, :15.

They foul, :13. Thurman misses the 1 and 1, they RB, they miss a 3, RB hit a 2. :02.

We get it in bounds, pass and the clock runs out. 43-42.

+8, even, 28-23%. Fouls were 10-15, but we were 10-20 from the line. Their free throw defense was tough!

Seriously, the D for both teams was amazing. If we had hit a few more free throws it would have been easier but we didn’t. What we DID do was gut it out.

8, 10, 1, 1 for Wall, 12, 4, 5 for Sharp despite the foul trouble, 5, 12, 2, 3, 2 for Reed, and MAN will we miss this four year starter, 11, 7, 1 for Hare. Whew!

Hare hurt his foot and he’ll be at about 85% but at this point you play.

Champions again!

Postby Wayne23 » Wed Apr 10, 2013 9:40 pm

It’s #3 ranked, 35-2 Oregon for all the marbles. We beat them by 28 but they’ve gotten a lot better since 12/5. They’ve won 29 straight, and they do not give up points. They did lose a very good 3 to grades but again, they haven’t lost since.

4/3: They lead 3-2 and then we get the next 13. Up 10, 8:56. #2 on Sharp, 3:22, up 14. 35-25 at the half. Our D was STIFLING!

+3, -3, 38-26%. Fouls are 8-9.

10-4, 2, 2, 2 for Wall. It’s only 10 points but it feels like we’re in control. I’m calm in the locker room and tell them to take care of the ball better but otherwise, just keep doing what they’re doing.

Hare seems fine. I’m resting him but he played 14 minutes.

We start with a 16-2 run, up 24, 15:21. Up 26, 11:18. Up 20, 5:44.

The realization sets in that this is the last game for Reed. I’ll make sure he gets his ovation. He’s out now but he’ll go back in. Up 25, 2:12.

Time for curtain calls and emptying the bench. I will have Seniors Wills and Roberts in at the end but will take Reed out shortly.

1:19, up 23, Reed comes out to a huge ovation. He has done so much for our program and was a four year starter and the first to win 4 national titles. Wills and Roberts won four as well but they weren’t starters. 69-43 at the end.

+9, +1, 43-24%. Fouls were14-25. The D was incredible.

24, 14, 3, 3, 3 for Wall, 8, 12, 3, 0, 4 for Reed, whose man had 6 and 2. 15, 2, 1 for Sharp, 10, 2, 3, 1, 2 for Thurman, and 7, 2, despite the injury, for Hare.

What a run, undefeated season, 39-0!

The new season

Postby Wayne23 » Wed Apr 17, 2013 9:17 pm

(Editor’s note: I’ll give it one more season. I’m going to zoom through, simming… If I get the UConn job at the end of the season Will lives, if not, this association dies. I’m sure I’ll bring him back again in a new association though.)

5/1: Bought national, Eastern and Southern Gold reports.

6/5: D. J. Brey transferred out. I have lots of guards. Going after Top 10 SF Transfer Al Bryant.

6/12: Got Bryant. Now to get him eligible.

6/25: Going to all the camps.

6/26: 3 to fill, looking at 5, a PG, 2 SGs, an SF, a PF.

7/11: All 5 recruits are saying we’re “awesome.” That’s awesome!

Our kid camps open and I get my first look at my team.

7/25: We’re going to be hard to beat again this year. Lots of really, really good players. We are DEEP!

8/7: Chad Sharp is #1 on the Norton list, Scott Crooks #6, Jay Thurman #13, Abel Stidham #14, Amir Stone #37.

8/21: Wish I could grab all 5 of the recruits I’m chasing. I go for a PF, a PG, and an SG. I like our chances with all 3.

9/11: PG Dave McGee, #6, commits.

9/18: Got ‘em all. And we have a schedule. At the JAG in December. Wouldn’t have been my first choice. Tough schedule, as always.

10/2: Practice begins.

11/6: Final recruit ratings are: Jake Jones, #2 SG, Jed Grant, #3 PF, Dave McGee, #6 PG. Not bad!

No exhibitions again this year.

11/13: Ready to zip through the season.

11/27: We crush our 1st 4 opponents, 2 at home, 2 on the road. Our 3 recruits all sign.

Undefeated regular season

Postby Wayne23 » Wed Apr 17, 2013 9:19 pm

12/11: 4 more, over 4 top 10 teams. #1 ranked, #1 RPI.

12/25: Bryant’s GPA is 1.9. We need to keep building it, almost there.

1/8: 16-0, #1, #1.

1/29: 22-0. 1 up on NC ST, at least 3 on the rest.

2/26: 29-0. Undefeated regular season.

39-0, undefeated again

Postby Wayne23 » Wed Apr 17, 2013 9:20 pm

3/12: We win the tourney.

4/1: In the final four. Playing #2 ranked Mich. ST. #4 Syracuse plays #3 Georgetown.

4/3: We play #3 ranked Georgetown for the title. We win by 30. Back to back undefeated seasons.

4/4: Awards: Mo Wall, tourney MVP. I get Coach OY. Nothing else nationally, which I find offensive and stupid. In conf., Wall makes 1st team, Sharp and Corrks make 2nd.

4/9: UConn or the- the- the- that’s all folks.
