Game #28 - Seniors' Day

Postby randy » Fri Nov 29, 2013 10:07 am

The following seniors will be playing the last home game of their collegiate careers.
  1. SG Kaniel Coley (So transfer)
  2. C Elliot Dare (JuCo recruit)
  3. C Hasheem Bailey (JuCo recruit)
  4. PG Shea Wheat (HS recruit)
  5. SG Malik Owes (JuCo recruit)

2/20/03: #12 Arizona (21-5, 13-4) @ #7 USC (23-3, 14-2)

Scouting Report
  1. Primary defense: M2M
  2. Offense focus: Balanced

Tip off (1st Half)

15:55, Up 9-0
Good defensive start; ARIZ 0-5 FG, 4 turn overs

11:37, Up 16-5

7:45, Up 18-9

3:44, Up 29-12

Halftime, Up 39-18

Highlights
  • Outstanding defense, whether on the half court, or in transition. ARIZ with only 5 FGMs (8 of their pts came from the FT line), zero fast break pts, zero 2nd chance pts.
  • On seniors' night, it is Fr SF James Slay who leads all scorers in the 1st half with 11 pts. Sort of like passing the baton, as Slay could very well be the foundation of this program the next few years.
Adjustments
  • Defense sets: M2M

Start of 2nd Half

The crowd appreciating that our starting lineup for the 2nd are all seniors

15:33, Up 44-23

11:46, Up 48-23
Over the next dead ball situations, the seniors will head to the bench one by one so they can be cheered and recognized by our fans

7:24, Up 52-25

5:13, Up 54-27
At this point, SG Kaniel Coley heads to the bench. No other player has meant more to the USC basketball program than Coley. But more than his contributions to the school, his emergence as a national star came at a time when the nation was still grieving from the disasters of 9/11 a few months earlier. All of us needed a distraction, whether someone to look up to, or someone to criticize .... just plainly someone to talk about. And Coley, whether he liked it or not, provided that "distraction".

Coley became an accidental celebrity. A young guy whose skills are limited to shooting the basketball, suddenly entrusted into the national limelight. Maybe the NCAA needed him as well, as the league has been plagued with scandals such as illegal recruiting, top programs getting on probation, etc.

But more than anything else, he is a basketball player who wanted to win. Perhaps the added media attention puts more pressure for him to win. And last year's NCAA tournament provided the stage for him to show that he is not just a temporary fad, but someone who can carry a team to winning a championship. His performance in last year's national title game, 40 pts (11 3pt shots), punctuated a season that will long be remembered for years to come.

While his production on the floor have dipped this season (no more games with 15 3pt shots), the whole nation is still eagerly anticipating what he can bring in the upcoming NCAA tournament.

The crowd is giving him a well-deserved standing ovation. And they seem dedicated to not stop clapping and remain standing, until the end of this game, even if Coley is already in the bench

Back to the game ...

3:57, Up 56-27
Everybody will play today, including walk-ons

  2. 2/6/03 (Home): Won 69-51

Tip off (1st Half)

13:27, Down 5-10
7 team fouls on us already; STAN has zero. I got an early technical

9:44, Down 13-14
SG Kaniel Coley with 3 triples, to keep us in this game

3:52, Down 21-25

Halftime, Up 31-26

Highlights
  • We tightened up or defense, plus poor F shooting by STAN (10-18 FT), and a buzzer-beating 3pt shot by PG Shea Wheat, gave us this 5-pt advantage at the half
  • STAN connected on 4-8 3PT, which is a bigger worry than their +9 in FTA
Adjustments
  • Defense sets: 1-2-2
  • Def intensity: Reduce to 6

Start of 2nd Half

15:41, Up 41-29
We came out the more aggressive team at the start of the half, always trying to get pts from the paint

11:38, Up 52-36
More inside pts, plus SG Kaniel Coley adding 2 more triples to his account. COley now with 17 pts, 5-7 3PT

7:36, Up 58-39
After just scoring 1 pt in the 1st half, C Elliott Dare exploded in the 2nd with 10 pts

3:24, Up 70-46
Can't see how STAN can come back. Clear the bench

Notes
  1. It's good to have a deep bench than can produce, in case some of our starters get into foul trouble. Despite our numerous team fouls, none among my players fouled out, which we needed in order to break away in the 2nd half

    • Fr PG Joey Bobbit (18.5 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 41% 3PT)
    • Jr PG Ronald Brooks (9.2 ppg, 3.6 apg)
    • Sr C Mike Reeves (7.8 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 51% FG)
  4. Notes:
    • Bobbit plays the 2, in their 2 PG starting lineup
  5. Strengths:
    • Seldom turn the ball: 12.2 topg (#1 MAAC, #11 Nat'l)
  6. Weaknesses:
    • Rebounding: 32.6 opp rpg (last MAAC)
    • Shooting percentage: 42.5% FG (2nd last MAAC), 32.3% 3PT (2nd last MAAC)
  7. How they got here:
    • Finished 6th MAAC; Won Conference Tournament
Strategies
  1. Defense: (1st half) 60:20:20 ratio; (2nd half) adjust

Tip off (1st Half)

15:17, Up 10-5
IONA 1-5 FG

9:21, Up 30-12
SG Kaniel Coley outscoring the entire IONA team, 18 pts, 7-9 FG, 4 triples already

6:28, Up 32-23
IONA scored 11 unanswered pts. I called a timeout to wake up the team

3:26, Up 38-23
C Hasheem Bailey seems to be nursing a slight injury

Halftime, Up 46-30

Highlights
  • IONA is a decent offensive team, but they have no one to match up against SG Kaniel Coley, who now has 23 pts, 9-12 FG, 5-8 3PT
  • We're +9 fast break pts
  • Both starting PF Valery Stuart and SF James Slay with 3 fouls each. With the slight injury to C Hasheem Bailey, we're a bit thin on front court depth

  • Defense sets: Use m2m defense exclusively
  • Defensive intensity: Reduce to 6

Start of 2nd Half

14:20, Up 63-45
Fans witnessed a shoot out to start the 2nd half. SG Kaniel Coley now with 33 pts, 7 triples

  2. We dished out 28 assists today
  3. Fortunately C Elliott Dare has no injury, and C Hasheem Bailey only has a sore shoulder (93%, 1 day) but he should be able to play on our next game

Game #33 - NCAA Tournament Round 2

Postby randy » Fri Nov 29, 2013 10:08 pm

A familiar opponent

3/18/03: (10) Stanford (18-12, 12-6) vs (2) #6 USC (29-3, 16-2)

Scouting Report
  1. Primary defense: M2M
  2. Offense focus: Balanced (slow)
  3. Key players:
    • Sr PF Kevin Garren (11.3 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 60% FG)
    • Fr SG Randy Jackson (11.6 ppg)
    • So PG Morgan Thompson (9.4 ppg, 4.9 apg)
  4. Notes:
    • Good balanced scoring, with 6 players averaging at least 7.7 ppg
    • In our 3 meetings with Stanford this season, they averaged only less than 10 inside ppg
    • Strengths:
      • Slow but efficient offense: 47.5% FG (#2 Pac 12, #14 Nat'l)
      • Gets to the FT line often: 21.3 FTApg (#1 Pac 12)
    • Weaknesses:
      • Rebounding: 27.8 rpg (last Pac 12)
    • How they got here:
      • Finished 4th Pac 12; Lost Conference Tournament Semi-Final
      • (Round 1) Def (7) #21 South Carolina St, 76-61; STAN shot 56% FG
    Strategies
    1. Defense: (1st half) 40:10:50 ratio; (2nd half) adjust

    Tip off (1st Half)

    15:51, Up 8-2
SG Kaniel Coley opened up the scoring with a 3pt shot. STAN 6 team fouls

    11:22, Up 13-6
Both teams cold shooting; it's out 6 FTMs that gave us the lead

    7:14, Up 23-9
We got more inside pts, and FTs

    2:24, Up 31-21
STAN beginning to hit their outside shots

    Halftime, Up 33-27

    Highlights
    • We're missing a lot of outside shots, contributing to our 33% FG. We need to take more advantage of our +12 differential in pts in the paint
    • STAN had zero off rebounds, zero 2nd chance pts, and zero fast break pts; yet their efficient offense (46% FG) only puts them in a 6-pt deficit
    Adjustments
    • Defense sets: Use m2m defense exclusively
    • Focus: Favor inside

    Start of 2nd Half

    14:57, up 42-37

SG Kaniel Coley gets a steal. PG Shea Wheat hits a medium-range jumper. Up 7. Coley with another steal, and in the ensuing offensive sequence, Coley hits his 3rd triple. Coley is very active on both ends of the court

    11:47, Up 47-37

    7:31, Up 55-41
We came up with a couple of blocks, and more pts in the low post

    3:23, Up 66-50
    We'll slow down the game

    Slay 7, 5, 0
    Dissinger 6, 3, 0
    Parker 5, 1, 3, 3 tos, fouled out
    Owes 4, 3, 2
    Wheat 4, 1, 5, 2 stls
    Martin 0, 0, 0

    TO: -5
    Paint: +18
    2nd Chance: +12
    Fast Break: +9
    [/INDENT]

    Notes
    1. Our 16 off rebounds helped us getting more possessions (+16 in FGA), resulting in 16 2nd chance pts, more than offeseting our low FG%
    2. STAN's 3-gurad rotation accounted for 36 of their 55 pts. Their big men almost non-existent on offense.

    • Rebounding - only +2.3 rpg differential; one possible explanation is they might be giving up off rebounds with DR of 73.8% (#3 CUSA)
  7. How they got here:
    • Finished 1st CUSA; Lost Conference Tournament Final
    • (Round 1) Def (14) Northeastern, 70-59; Mouring - 26 pts, 11 rebs
    • (Round 2) Def (6) Cincinnati, 80-72; MEM only 7 turn overs
Strategies
  1. As of 2 NCAA tournament games, MEM was only 5-20 3PT combined. They are however, scoring more on the inside, averaging 35 inside ppg on those 2 games. We can force them to shoot more from the outside
  2. What we want to avoid is for MEM to go to the line; they averaged 22 FTAs in their 2 NCAA tournament games
  3. Defense: (1st half) 30:50:20 ratio; (2nd half) adjust

Tip off (1st Half)

13:55, Down 10-14
MEM 67% FG, zero turn overs. Their front court has scored 6 pts; we'll go 2-3 exclusive. On the other hand, we're doing a good job on off rebounds (3), but PF Valery Stuart is 1-4 FT

11:54, Tied at 14

Consecutive turn overs, and misses from the outside, by MEM. SG Kaniel Coley (8 pts) hits his 2nd triple of the game, SF Brian Dissinger (4 pts) scores on a short jumper, and C Hasheem Bailey gets an inside bucket. SG Mail Owes gets a steal on MEM's back court, and SF Brian Dissinger converts another FG. Dissinger big off the bench with 6 pts.

It was a 9-0 run, until MEM answers back with a basket

9:12, Up 23-16

Trading misses. SG Maik Owes drives strong to the hole and scores. Another steal by Owes, and SG Shea Wheat scores an easy 2 on transition. After a miss by MEM, we go to Owes (6 pts) who connects on a jumper from the side. We made a great run, with an all-bench lineup on the floor!

7:03, Up 29-16

MEM continues to have problems solving our 2-3 zone, and their FG shooting has dropped to 33%

4:28, Up 35-16

Halftime, Up 49-37

Highlights
  • Fantastic contributions from a lot of players. SG Kaniel Coley with 13 pts (3 triples), Coley's back up SG Malik Owes with 10 (5-6 FG), 6 pts off the bench from SF Brian Dissinger, and PF Valery Stuart (despite his 1-5 FT) powered his way to 9 pts
  • Aside from our good half-court defense, we successfully managed to prevent MEM in getting pts from other sources - FTs (just 2-2 FT), 2nd chance pts (zero), fast break pts (zero)
Adjustments
  • Defense sets: Continue with 2-3 zone

Start of 2nd Half

14:08, Up 56-35
MEM connected on a couple of 3s, but we were able to score enough to keep them from making a big run. SG Kaniel Coley now has 18 pts, including 4 triples

11:50, Up 58-38
MEM hits their 3rd triple of the 2nd half, but no big rally in sight for them. MEM is also in the penalty

7:09, Up 62-48
MEM continues to shoot better from the perimeter in the 2nd half. I'll bring back my starters, and switch to m2m defense

3:22, Up 66-51
Our offense hit a drought, but our defense stepped up a notch since the shift to m2m, allowing MEM only 3 pts in almost 4 mins. We'll slow down the game now.

Final score: Memphis- 54, USC - 70

Notes
  1. Our defense was consistent the entire game, not allowing MEM to make any big runs even if they hot 6 3pt shots in the 2nd half
  2. We gave up some outside shots to MEM, but we took away their inside game starting the middle of the 2nd half when we shifted to 2-3 zone. That adjustment was enough to give us a big lead, which we never relinquished
  3. MEM C James Stacey had good game defensively, 9 rebs and 10 blocks!

Game #35 - NCAA Tournament Regionals Final (Elite 8)

Postby randy » Sat Nov 30, 2013 5:36 am

3/25/03: (2) #6 USC (31-3, 16-2) vs (1) #4 Georgia Tech (28-5, 14-4)

Scouting Report
  1. Primary defense: M2M
  2. Offense focus: Balanced
  3. Key players:
    • Sr C Brett Watkins (15.3 ppg, 11.4 rpg, 58% FG)
    • So PG Andre Vanlier 15.2 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 5.4 apg, #5 class rank)
    • So PG Booker Randolph (11.4 ppg, #29 class rank)
    • Sr SF Brad Smith (10.9 ppg)
  4. Notes:
    • GT only has 3 legitimate big men (PF/C) in their lineup. Their starting PF is injured (85%) and may not play, while the other backup C is academically ineligible. This leaves only Watkins as the only one available for this game. Aside from SF Brad Smith, they only have one other available SF on the bench.
  5. Strengths:
    • Defense - 59.7 opp ppg (#1 ACC), 41% opp FG (#3 ACC), 16.6 opp topg (#2 ACC)
  6. Weaknesses:
    • Off Rebounding - on their last 2 NCAA tournament games, they averaged only 6 off rebs, and 4 2nd chance pts. Aside from C Brett Watkins, they dont have any other legitimate big men in their lineup today
  7. How they got here:
    • Finished 1st ACC; Won Conference Tournament
    • (Round 1) Def Arkansas St, 61-42; Vaniler 23 pts, 8 rebs, 4 asts
    • (Round 2) Def (9) Georgia, 76-59; Randolph 30 pts, 6-6 3PT
    • (Sweet 16) Def (4) #16 Indiana, 76-59; Vaniler 26 pts, 6 rebs
Strategies
  1. In 3 NCAA tournament games, Watkins has not been a factor offensively, with only 5 ppg. It is their guards who are doing the damage
  2. If we can take out Watkins with early foul trouble, GT will have to field in a small lineup (no PF/C), and we can attack the paint relentlessly
  3. Defense: (1st half) 1-2-2; (2nd half) adjust
  4. Off focus: Favor inside (when Watkins is not on the floor)

Tip off (1st Half)

15:50, Up 10-4
GT 3 turn overs, all of which we converted to 3 transition baskets

11:30, Tied at 17
GT's first 3 attempts from beyond the arc all went in

An inside basket by PF Kevin Martin, the 2nd triple by SG Kaniel Coley, and 2 more FTs for C Hasheem Bailey comprise our current 7-0 run. GT sent C Brett Watkins to the bench, so we'll shift to Focus Inside

9:12, Up 24-17

GT continues to shoot well from the outside, 4-6 3PT, but we were able to get the 3rd foul of GT's C Brett Watkins. Heck, we'll go Heavy Inside and pound them further

6:20, Up 28-24

We are successful in our inside pays, either getting a basket, or a foul. But GT continues to shoot well on their outside shots. Particularly, PG Andre Vanlier (11 pts, 3-3 3PT) and PG/SG Booker Randolph (8 pts). We will go to m2m defense, double team on both Vanlier and Randolph

3:53, Up 32-28

With just over a minute left in the 1st half, GT scored their 5th 3pt shot of the game, to cut our lead to just 1 pt. PF Valery Stuart answers back on an inside basket. GT's PG Booker Randolph connects on a long jumper, with 2 defenders in his face. SF James Slay finished the scoring for us, with his 3rd FG of the game

Halftime, Up 40-37

Highlights
  • Both teams finished with identical 15-33 FG (46%) but the manner on how these pts were produced are of extreme contrast. GT connected on 5-8 3PT plus countless of long 2-pt shots, while we relied on our 20-0 advantage in inside pts. The 2nd half will be decided on which team can stop what the other team likes to do
  • We still can't figure out how to stop GT's starting guards, who have combined for 25 pts. We tried 1-2-2 and m2m double teaming both of them.
Adjustments
  • Defense sets: Continue with M2M, doubling GT's starting guards
  • Off focus: Change to favor inside

Start of 2nd Half

We opened up the 2nd half with a turn over that GT capitalizes on an easy transition basket. Fortunately, we were able to score back quickly to restore our 3 pt lead.

Teams traded misses and turn overs. PF Valery Stuart with another inside basket, but was answered by another 3 from GT's PG Booker Randolph. Up 2. We scored, but GT connected on 2 FTs

16:00, Up 46-44

I replaced SG Kaniel Coley, and will try 2 SFs to man our 2-3 spots. One of them will then have to cover GT's SG Booker Randolph, and hopefully limit their outside shooting

GT's SF now joins their outside shooting party, connecting a medium-range shot to tie the game. After we miss, we got called for a foul. GT splits their FT to take the lead, I think for the 1st time in the game

15:05, Down 46-47

We turn the ball over, but we recovered and get a steal which we converted to an easy 2 in transition. Up 1

After a GT miss, we got the bal into the low post to C Hasheem Bailey who got fouled on the act of shooting. That was GT's C Brett Watkins' 4th foul. 2 FTs. Bailey splits. Up 2. With Watkins on the bench, we'll go Heavy Inside

GT missed a 3. But we turned the ball over again. Wasted opportunity

GT hits a 3 this time. Down 1. Another turn over on our end, and GT runs the break and scores. Down 3. SF James Slay answers back to cut our deficit to 1.

GT hits 2 FTs. Down 3. I reinserted SG Kaniel Coley back to the floor. A couple of plays later, Coley connects on only his 2nd 3pt shot of the game, and we are tied

9:42, Tied at 54

A miss by GT. PF Valery Stuart drives hard to the lane, and scores inside again. Stuart has been productive in this game, 14 pts, 8 rebs. Up 2

A turn over by GT, resulted in a fast break score for us. Up 4. But GT answers back with another on their next play. Up 1

SG Kaniel Coley thought about a 3. But he dumps it inside to C Hasheem Bailey, who got fouled again. 2 FTs. Split. Up 2

We foul a jump shooter. Bad foul. But GT missed both FTs

We miss a shot. GT called for traveling. Media timeout. A very exciting game so far

7:50, Up 59-57

We got called for traveling also. It's our 13th turn over; GT has 11

A miss by GT. We got fouled again on the low post, this time it's PF Kevin Martin. 2 FTs. Martin missed both FTs!

Trading misses. On GT's next possession, we got called for another foul while their PG is shooting a jump shot. 2 FTs for PG Andre Vanlier. Vanlier hits both. Vanlier now with 19 pts, 7 asts.

I will now begin to put the taller SF James Slay to guard Vanlier, and make some switches on the other defensive match ups

6:05, Tied at 59

SG Kaniel Coley gets the pass back. Coley puts up a shot. SWISH! It's good for three! Coley's 3rd triple, 13 pts. But what a clutch shot. Up 3

With about 8 secs on their shot clock, GT went to SF Brad Smith who is now being guarded by the smaller SG Kaniel Coley because of our defensive switches. Smith now realizing his mismatch takes a shot and scores. Smart move by GT. Up 1

5:12, Up 62-61

Coley missed a 3 this time, but GT turns the ball on a bad pass.

The pass is taken by SF James Slay. Slay takes a shot. Slay's shot hits nothing but the bottom of the net. Slay has been very consistent in this game, 12 pts, 5 rebs, 4 asts. Up 3

GT's PG Andre Vanlier being hounded by the much taller SF James Slay. Vanlier throws out a horrible pass. Great pressure defense by Slay

PF Hasheem Bailey gets the ball in the low post. He is being guarded by GT's C Brett Watkins who has 4 fouls. Bailey knows this and goes strong to the hoop and gets the easy 2. Watkins impotent on defense. Another strong performance by Bailey off the bench, 12 pts. Up 5

3:54, Up 66-61

A miss by GT. On our next play, SF James Slay missed a medium jumper

GT goes to Brett Watkins down low. His shot was blocked by C Hasheem Bailey. But Watkins recovers, and scores on a short jumper. That's just the 1st FG of Watkins

3:09, Up 66-63

A miss 3 by SG Kaniel Coley. He hurried that one. GT also missed. I call a timeout

2:37, Up 66-63

We'll continue to go inside

We go to SF James Slay. Slay makes his move off the dribble. Slay pulls up. Slay scores! Slay with 14 pts. Up 5

GT scores on a drive. This is far from over. Up 3

2:00, Up 68-65

SG Kaniel Coley trying to throw a pass to C Elliott Dare. It was a terrible pass. Turn over number 14

GT goes to SG Booker Randolph. He puts up a shot despite a double team. Missed the shot badly. Out of bounds. Last touch GT. I call a timeout

1:24, Up 68-65

SG Kaniel Coley dumps the ball to C Elliott Dare. Dare shoots. Miss. GT rebounds. Their C Brett Watkins, who is 1-4 FG today, shoots a long 18 ft jumper. Brick! Out of bounds. Our ball. Bad possession for GT

0:52, Up 68-65

I didn't call a time out. I just signaled that we slow down

We pass the ball around, wasting some clock. With about 5 secs left on the shot clock, PF Valery Stuart gets the pass but he is way beyond the 3 pt line. He hurriedly pass the ball but commits a turn over. Timeout

We'll go 1-2-2 zone to prevent a 3. I will insert a tall lineup to guard the perimeter

0:19, Up 68-65

We got called for a foul. Our 8th team foul. Perhaps a smart foul (?) by PF Valery Stuart. 1-and-1 for GT's C Brett Watkins, who has the chance to redeem himself with that bonehead shot attempt he put up in an earlier play. This is Watkin's 1st trip to the line in this game.

Watkins hits the 1st. And the 2nd. Wow, pressure-packed FTs. I called a timeout.

0:14, Up 68-67

No need to put up a shot. GT have no choice but to foul. I'll put SG Kaniel Coley at the 1 spot, so he'll be likely the player who will get fouled

Here we go. Full court pressure by GT. Coley safely gets it across the timeline. Foul by GT. Problem for GT is, it's only their 4th team foul.

0:08 left. We inbound again. 5th team foul. 0:07. 6th team foul. 0:06

Coley suddenly finds himself open after getting the inbound. He decided to put up a shot. It goes in! 0:02 left. GT with no timeout

Final 4 for the 3rd straight year!!!

But that was a tough match

Final score: USC - 71, Georgia Tech - 67

Notes
  1. It was like a chess match, making adjustments and counter adjustments all game long. Despite their disadvantage on their front line, GT capitalized on their strength which is their outside shooting. We countered it with repeated inside plays to expose their weakness. We were just lucky enough to have the last possession, and control the end game. That's how clse the game was, a difference of one possession
  2. Our 3-man rotation at the post (Dare/Stuart/Bailey) did a good job following our game plan, and combined for 35 pts
