Game #28 - Seniors' Day
Posted: Fri Nov 29, 2013 10:07 am
The following seniors will be playing the last home game of their collegiate careers.
2/20/03: #12 Arizona (21-5, 13-4) @ #7 USC (23-3, 14-2)
Scouting Report
Tip off (1st Half)
15:55, Up 9-0
Good defensive start; ARIZ 0-5 FG, 4 turn overs
11:37, Up 16-5
7:45, Up 18-9
3:44, Up 29-12
Halftime, Up 39-18
Highlights
Start of 2nd Half
The crowd appreciating that our starting lineup for the 2nd are all seniors
15:33, Up 44-23
11:46, Up 48-23
Over the next dead ball situations, the seniors will head to the bench one by one so they can be cheered and recognized by our fans
7:24, Up 52-25
5:13, Up 54-27
At this point, SG Kaniel Coley heads to the bench. No other player has meant more to the USC basketball program than Coley. But more than his contributions to the school, his emergence as a national star came at a time when the nation was still grieving from the disasters of 9/11 a few months earlier. All of us needed a distraction, whether someone to look up to, or someone to criticize .... just plainly someone to talk about. And Coley, whether he liked it or not, provided that "distraction".
Coley became an accidental celebrity. A young guy whose skills are limited to shooting the basketball, suddenly entrusted into the national limelight. Maybe the NCAA needed him as well, as the league has been plagued with scandals such as illegal recruiting, top programs getting on probation, etc.
But more than anything else, he is a basketball player who wanted to win. Perhaps the added media attention puts more pressure for him to win. And last year's NCAA tournament provided the stage for him to show that he is not just a temporary fad, but someone who can carry a team to winning a championship. His performance in last year's national title game, 40 pts (11 3pt shots), punctuated a season that will long be remembered for years to come.
While his production on the floor have dipped this season (no more games with 15 3pt shots), the whole nation is still eagerly anticipating what he can bring in the upcoming NCAA tournament.
The crowd is giving him a well-deserved standing ovation. And they seem dedicated to not stop clapping and remain standing, until the end of this game, even if Coley is already in the bench

Highlights
- Outstanding defense, whether on the half court, or in transition. ARIZ with only 5 FGMs (8 of their pts came from the FT line), zero fast break pts, zero 2nd chance pts.
- On seniors' night, it is Fr SF James Slay who leads all scorers in the 1st half with 11 pts. Sort of like passing the baton, as Slay could very well be the foundation of this program the next few years.
