Jess Wynn, to do the impossible

NCAA first two rounds

Postby Wayne23 » Sat Aug 03, 2013 3:54 pm

We’ll be #1 somewhere, but where?

#1 Midwest. Louisville #2, Michigan State #3, FL #4, Texas #5.

We’ll play Coastal Carolina, 16-15, 8-8, from the Big South
. They finished 7th and then somehow won their tourney. This won’t be pretty.

3/16: 65-42. They played well and hung in for about 33 minutes.

+4, +7, 41-32%, fouls 12-23.

20, 8, 1, 4 for Garr, 18, 4, 2, 3 for Mack, 17, 6, 1, 1, 2 for day. 8 assists for Brown.

Arizona won, too.

3/17: Stanford and UCLA won.

#8 seed Georgetown, 22-8, 10-6 is next.
They did not finish strong, 3-4 for the last 7. They have some talent but if we play we’ll be fine.

Garr has bronchitis but he’ll play.

3/18: 66-40.
Never a game.

+5, +9, 34-29%.

38, 12, 4, 1, 2 for Mack, 8, 10, 2, 2, 1 for Day, 10, 4, 1 for Wilk. Brown had 10 assists.

#1 overall Georgia Tech was upset by giant killer Arizona. A path has opened.

3/19: UCLA and Stanford won again.

Sweet 16, Elite 8

Postby Wayne23 » Sat Aug 03, 2013 4:45 pm

#5 seed, #20 ranked Texas, 24-9, 12-4 is next in the Sweet Sixteen. We beat them by 11 early on. They finished 4th, lost in the 2nd round. 3-2 in their last 5. Starting PG is hurt but he’ll play. This is a good team, we’ll need to play our game.

3/23: 71-49. Never in doubt.

+5, +5, 37-29%, fouls 8-17.

19, 6, 3 for Mack, 14, 12, 2, 1, 2 for Day, 13, 10 for Garr, 11, 2, 3, 2 for Wilk.
Arizona lost.

3/24: UCLA and Stanford both won again.

#2 seed, #5 ranked Louisville, 30-5, 14-2 in the Elite Eight. Finished 1st and won the Big East tourney.13 straight wins, 17 of 18. Very strong inside.
We need to hold our own there and turn them over. This is a tough match up.

3/25: They never led, 59-44. Our bigs ate theirs up, and our guards outplayed theirs as well. Final Four! Our second ever. We won it all last time.

+11, +2, 35-28%, fouls 14-20.

20, 6 for Mack, 12, 10, 2, 1, 1 for Garr, 8, 9 for Day, 8, 6, 4, 1, 2 for Brown, 6, 4, 5, 1 for Wilk.

We’ll play #13 ranked, #3 seed Virginia.

3/26: #1 Kansas beat Stanford, #2 UCLA beat New Mexico.

Still excited to be in the Final Four.

34-2, 14-2.

The rest of the season

Postby Wayne23 » Sat Aug 03, 2013 5:43 pm

Virginia is 26-7, 10-6. 6-1 in the last 7. Finished 4th, lost in the 2nd round. Tough inside but guards can be pressured. That’s what we’ll do. Our bigs have taken us this far so we feel good about this one.

4/1: 63-53. They owned the first half, led by as many as 9, 5 at the half. At the half I talked about keeping the pressure on their guards and it worked.

We went at their PG and he fouled out. We knew the back up was weak and that did it. The last 10 minutes belonged to us.

+6, even, 31-32%.

23, 4, 2, 3 for Mack, 15, 15, 2, 1, 5 for Garr, 6, 3, 8, 3 for Brown.

We’ll play #1 Kansas, 34-1, 16-0, for the title. They lost their season opener to UCLA and never lost again. They play incredible D. They play 6 guys and all 6 can PLAY! They score inside and out, rebound, and take care of the ball. This is a tall order.

4/3: We were up 11 at the half. They came and took a three point lead with 1:31 to go.

Mack came down and hit a 12 footer, down 1, 1:11. We fouled, they hit the first, missed the 2nd, Garr got the RB, down 2, :52.

Brown took it himself, threw up a 3 and it went in. up 1, :24. We fouled their C with :09 left and he hit both. Down 1.

I took a TO. Mack had to take this shot. He’s our guy and we were going to live or die with him. They doubled him but Call set a great screen (Garr had fouled out) and Mack worked off it to shake both defenders.

He put up a 14 footer and it went in with :01 left. Final score 64-63 and we’re the champs!

What a feeling!

-12, +3, 39-32%, fouls 20-22. Our bigs beat theirs, our guards beat theirs but their bench almost did enough to win.

24, 9, 1, 2, 3 for Mack in his last college game. 14, 4, 2, 1, 1 for Garr, 10, 1, 6, 3 for Brown in his last game, 9, 4, 2, 1, 2 for Wilk, 6,4 for Day. The bench got 1 point but 6 RBS, 5 assists.

I’d forgotten what an incredible feeling this is.

36-2, 14-2.

4/4: Awards: Mack won the Norton and the tourney MOP and made national 1st team. I got Coach of the Year. In conf., Mack was POY and 1st team, along with Garr. Brown led the nation in assists and didn’t make the conf. team? Makes no sense.

4/9: Huge job offers, Oklahoma State and Wake Forest will get visits from me.

Going to Wake Forest
. They have 7 excellent players returning and 2 outstanding recruits. Their budget ($400,000) and facilities (A+) are top shelf and I’ll go from a salary $161,000 to $1,213,000.

4/16: Time to hire a staff. Great staff!

4/23: I’ll ask for time. They gave me 3 years. Nope. Oh well, 3 years should be enough.

4/30: My numbers: 399-104, .793 after 15 seasons.

Off. 65, Def. 95, Recruit 99, Scout 9, Player Dev. 80, Reputation 82.
Some people are shocked that I would leave the defending champs but I was losing too much and they couldn’t come close with salary, budget and facilities. Two titles at Washington, great memories, a wonderful place to live, but time to move on.

Getting ready for 1st season at Wake

Postby Wayne23 » Sat Aug 31, 2013 2:05 am

5/1: A new start. Preseason #4. Bought National Gold.

6/5: Cleaned house so lots of roster spots. Going for 4 transfers.

6/12: Got one, PG Trey Mury, a 4 star soph with 5 star potential.

6/25: Going to all the camps, we can afford it.

6/26: Mike Mack went #1 in the draft. Brian Brown #30, Tony Day #37, Del Prat #39, Ty Call #43.

5 schollies to fill. We could go 2 guards, 3 bigs or vice versa. Looking at 20, 5 PG, 5 SG, 3 SF, 4 PF, 3 C. Almost all of them are interested in us.

8/7: Brad Auer is #5 on the Norton List, Tony Hoff #8, Dave Wang #18, Kris Thom #45, Kyle Will #48.

8/21: We offer to 3 bigs, 2 guards.

9/11: Home visits.

9/18: Got 2, lost one. We got #2 Cal Tell, PF, and #7 Ted Spek, PF.

We’re in the preseason NIT and playing a very tough schedule overall.

9/25: Got #5 SG Ben Marr.

10/2: Got the last 2: #29 PG Chad Bosc and #20 C Todd Olds.

First day of practice.
Definitely lots of talent here.

We’re picked to win the conf.

10/23: New poll has us at #2.

11/2: First exhibition is vs. Brown.
41-35 at the half.

67-65 at the end. +10, even, 45-49%, fouls 7-13.

11/7: 2nd exhibition is vs. Brown. 34-23 at the half.

66-46 at the end. +1, +10, 44-33%, fouls 11-16.

No changes to lineup or minutes.
