Game #14

Postby randy » Thu Dec 05, 2013 2:00 am

Jan 10, 1963: Delaware St (6-7, 1-3) @ Hampton (9-4, 2-2)

1st Half
Started 7-8 FG. Up 16-9, 13:38. Our turn overs evaporated our lead. Tied at 20, 6:29. Our our hot start, we git into scoring drought shooting only 2-12 FG, and went down by 3. We recovered at the last minute of the 1st half
Halftime, Tied at 29
 • Key stat: Pts in Paint, DELST 18, HAMP 6
 • Top performer(s): HAMP's SG Cedric Young 14 pts
 • We'll go m2m defense, double on Young. Also, we'll shift to heavy inside
2nd Half
We got off to another good start at the half, with a 12-2 run. HAMP was able to get back with their off rebounding; we'll max out on def rebounding crash. Up 47-41, 12:07. We led by 9, but turn overs betrayed us again. Up 52-51, 7:12. This has been a pattern of our games: we get a lead, our opponent rallies and when they do, they would hit everything.

Down 57-59, 3:14

HAMP: Split FTs. Down 3
DELST: PG Russell Marquis scores on a drive. Down 1
HAMP: We get a steal
DELST: Marquis scored again on a break away layup

Up 61-60, 2:28

HAMP: They isolate their center against our slow footed C Ray Williams. They score on a drive with Williams not able to move. Down 1
DELST: SG Gareth Clark drives. He score, plus a foul. Clark gets the bonus

Up 64-62, 1:55

HAMP: This time, their center settled for a jump shot and missed. Timeout

Up 64-62, 1:33

DELST: We missed on a low post play
HAMP: They score plus a foul. FT is good. Down 1. Timeout

Down 64-65, 0:53

We'll isolate on SG Gareth Clark

DELST: Clark gets the ball. Clark shoots a jumper. Missed. We get the off rebound, but also missed the follow. 0:43
HAMP: We don't need to foul, but we got called for one. 2 FTs. Split. Timeout

Down 64-66, 0:26

Same play

DELST: Clark called for traveling.

We have no choice now to foul intentionally. Another wasted game for us!

Game #15

Postby randy » Thu Dec 05, 2013 3:39 am

Jan 13, 1963: Morgan St (7-7, 1-4) @ Delaware St (6-8, 1-4)

1st Half
Good start defensively so far, forcing MORG to 6 turn overs already. Up 12-4, 14:36. As in our previous games, we would let our opponents come back after we get a good start. Up 22-21, 7:24. And true enough, MORG suddenly hitting all their shots, and we went down by as many as 10
Halftime, Down 30-36
 • Key stat: Rebounds, MORG 20, DELST 6 (zero off rebounds)
 • Top performer(s): DELST's SG Gareth Clark 8 pts, 3 asts
2nd Half
We had 3 turn overs in the 1st 3 mins of the 2nd half, but we managed to scrape in some baskets and some stops afterwards, to trim the lead to 2. Down 43-45, 14:32. Our deficit increased to 7 again. We cut it down to 3. MORG's lead swing back and forth between 4 and 6 for several minutes. And then we hit scoring drought again. SG Gareth Clark converted on a 3pt play to cut the deficit to 4. After a turnover by MORG, we converted a FG on our end. Down 59-61, 5:44. A miss by MORG but they got another off rebound (10 for the game) and scored. Very frustrating. After we convert 2 FTs, we get a steal, and scored at the other end.

Tied at 63, 4:08

MORG: Miss
DELST: Miss by SG Gareth Clark but an off putback by C Ray Williams is good. We take the lead after what seems like an eternity. Up 2, 3:30.

MORG: Foul called. 2 FTs. They split. Up 1, 3:16
DELST: C Ray Williams with the drive and scores again. Williams scoring our last 4 pts. Up 3, 2:54.

MORG: Turnover #21
DELST: PF Marcus Campbell with a jumper plus a foul. Converts the FT. Up 6, 2:24. We'll slow down the game

Teams trading misses. MORG commits another turn over, and we get the fast break opportunity to score an easy basket. Up 8, 1:32. 3 possession game. That's probably safe now

This is a relief win, after 3 straight home defeats

Jan 15, 1963: North Carolina A&T (4-11, 1-5) @ Delaware St (7-8, 2-4)

1st Half
Tight game early on with no team leading by more than 3 pts, until we were able to go on a 9-2 run. Up 20-14, 9:18. Game of runs, as we went up 8. And then we had another collapse, reducing our lead to 1. But unlike before, the team recovered with more urgency and we hit NCAT with a barrage of pts to take a 16 pt lead. Our fans now beginning to see hope of a revival in our up-and-down season
Halftime, Up 43-27
 • Key stat: Rebounds, NCAT 8, DELST 19
 • Top performer(s): NCAT's C Neil Leach 16 pts, 7-8 FG; DELST's SG Gareth Clark 13 pts, 4 asts
 • We'll go 2-3 zone in the 2nd half
2nd Half
I just hope we don't collapse in the 2nd half. Lokks like we can hold on to the lead this time; we're +17 rebounds. Up 55-39, 9:40. Or so I thought. NCAT's perimeter players begin to hit outside shots, and they reduced our lead to 9. NCAT had several opportunities to cut the lead further but we cam with good defensive plays each time. Up 62-51, 2:58.
Both teams with 4 turn overs. Our starting back court picked up 2 fouls each, but we were able to maintain a small lead. Up 14-10, 12:51. We got into penalty early, and MDES able to wrest the lead by having the advantage on FTs. Down 24-28, 5:44. We went down by as many as 8 pts with 4-and-a-half remaining, but we managed to finish the half on a 19-8 run, thanks mainly to a lot of driving penetations.
Halftime, Up 43-40

 • Top performer(s): DELST's SF Caleb Carlisle 9 pts; MDES C Wes Johnson 11 pts, 4 rebs

Jan 27, 1963: Howard (14-4, 6-3) @ Delaware St (10-8, 5-4)

1st Half
HOW content on shooting from the outside, as 6 of their 8 FGAs are from beyond the arc (made 3). Down 11-12, 12:53. HOW continues to shoot hot from the outside. We'll go m2m exclusively. Down 19-24, 7:02. Score was nailed at 27-28 for a long time. We had tons of opportunity to take the lead but always come up short. HOW getting the benefit of the calls, as the foul count stands at 10-1 in HOW's favor

Game #20

Postby randy » Thu Dec 05, 2013 10:37 am

We take our 5-game winning streak on the home turf of the conference's best team so far

Jan 31, 1963: Delaware St (11-8, 6-4) @ South Carolina St (13-7, 9-2)
 • Last Meeting: (Home) Lost 57-67; we were -11 in fast break pts

1st Half
Lots of things not going rights for us; 36% FG, SCST scoring easy transition baskets off our 5 turn overs, and SG Gareth Clark picking up 2 fouls. But the game is still close. Down 11-15, 11:18. Clark picked up his 3rd. SCST shooting well at 56% FG, and threatening to blow this game away. Down 18-27, 6:31. We brought down the deficit to 3, but SCST answers back. We rallied again, and was able to take the lead. Up 35-34, 1:04.
Halftime, Up 40-36
 • Key stat: FG% - DELST 52% FG, SCST 44% FG; mainly because we scored 24 pts in the paint
 • We also prevented SCST to only 4 fast break pts in the 1st half
 • Top performer(s): DELSTs C Ray Williams 11 pts, 4 rebs; SCST's SG Jeff Hinton 13 pts
 • We'll double on Hinton
2nd Half
SF Greg Lee, who started the 2nd half in lieu of SG Gareth Clark, has played well scoring 9 pts. SCST had reduced the lead to 1 pt several times, and was able to finally take the lead before the 2nd media timeout. Down 58-59, 11:24. SG Gareth Clark picked up his 4th foul and heads back to the bench again. SCST extended their lead to 4, when they hit long 3 just before their shot clock was about to expire. With a little under 8 minutes, I had no choice but to bring back Clark. We're getting a lot of opportunities to score inside, but we're missing them. Deficit increased to 8, after SCST scored a reverse 3pt play on a missed FT; very disheartening. Down 67-75, 3:30. We couldn't make stops. I instructed the team to increase pace and look for 3s. Didn't worked also. Winning streak over

Game #21

Postby randy » Thu Dec 05, 2013 11:40 am

5 of our next 7 games are at home. Finishing at least 2nd in the conference still looms as a realistic possibility if we protect our home court the rest of the way, and win 1 (or both) road game

Feb 3, 1963: Norfolk St (11-9, 5-6) @ Delaware St (11-9, 6-5)
 • Last Meeting: (Away) Lost 52-64; we were +8 turn overs

1st Half
SG Gareth Clark started aggressive on offense with 10 pts, 5-7 FG. Up 17-15, 11:48. Both teams got into penalty with more than 10 mins remaining. We were able to get to the FT line more. Up 36-26, 6:26. The rest of the half was a shoot out, defense seems like an optional thing
Halftime, Up 55-49
 • Key stat: FTs - NORST 8-11, DELST 18-23
 • When we are not shooting FTs, we're hitting a 72% FG clip; NORST not far behind at 54%
 • Top performer(s): NORST's PG Eddie Kincaid 10 pts, 4 asts; DELST's SG Gareth Clark 18 pts, 9-11 FG
 • We'll go m2m defense exclusively in the 2nd half. The team who can play a semblance of defense in the 2nd half will win in this high-scoring game
2nd Half
The shootout continued, but NORST had more turn overs which allowed us to get more opportunities to shoot. Also, NORST got into foul trouble early again. Up 76-67, 12:40. Both teams still shooting well, but we were able to keep distance from NORST. Up 94-79, 3:53. NORST trying to slow down the game in the latter part of the game, probably thinking that would prevent us from reaching 100, but we were able to cross the century mark nevertheless
Final Score: Norfolk St - 85, Delaware St - 104

Notes
 • As a defensive minded coach, this is the type of game that would feel good only if we win it; if the results were different, it would have been our worst game of the season
 • Final fouls and FT count: total combined fouls = 49 (21-28); NORST 18-23 FT, DELST 31-38 FT
