Game #6

Postby randy » Wed Dec 04, 2013 5:01 am

Dec 3, 1962: Delaware St (3-2) @ Longwood (3-3)

1st Half
We were leading by 5, but LONG came up with an 8-0 run, capped by 2 triples. Down 12-15, 11:49. LONG's starting back court has scored all but 1 of their total pts; when both of them were on the bench, LONG's offense got frozen. However, we are not shooting that well either, at 38% FG. Up 18-17, 6:40. FTs have allowed LONG to get a good lead
Halftime, Down 27-35
 • Key stat: FTs, DELST 3-3, LONG 10-11 FT
 • Top performer(s): DELST - Gareth Clark 7 pts; LONG - SG Jeff Riviere 9 pts
 • We shot 39% FG; we need to take higher-percentage shots in the inside (shift to favor inside)
2nd Half
LONG wisely slowing the game down, and with our continued shooting woes, we haven't made any developments cutting down their lead. Down 35-46, 11:30. Lead ballooned to 19. We cut it down to 12, but that was as close as we can get; our turn overs and lack of effort on the def glass prevented us from making further runs
Final Score: Delaware St - 51, Longwood - 72

Notes
 • Even with that kind of shooting, we may be able to still win some games. But what killed us was we gave 26 pts in the paint today. If we continue to play like this, it will be a long season for us

Game #7

Postby randy » Wed Dec 04, 2013 5:59 am

Dec 7, 1962: Boston (0-6) @ Delaware St (3-3)

1st Half
Despite BU having 4 turn overs, game is close at the start. Tied at 9, 14:21. Quality minutes for C Ray Williams off the bench, 6 pts, 4 rebs. SF Caleb Carlisle hits a 3 to give us an 8 pt lead. Up 25-17, 6:30. BU has shot well with 52% FG, but their 11 turn overs gave them lesser opportunities
Halftime, Up 33-28
 • Key stat: Turn overs, BU-11, DELST-5
 • We're +10 on 2nd chance pts, and +6 of fast break pts, which negated BU's high FG%
 • Top performer(s): DELST - Caleb Carlisle 8 pts
2nd Half
SG Gareth Clark picked up his 4th foul, but the rest of team contributed on offense, scoring on inside and more 2nd chance pts. Up 46-39, 12:46. More BU turn overs, and our lead suddenly increased to 17. BU never got closer than 11 after that

Boston University's 0-7. Who knows, they could end up like Grambling State in real life last year.

Game #8

Postby randy » Wed Dec 04, 2013 9:09 am

Dec 14, 1962: Middle Tennessee St (3-4) @ Delaware St (4-3)

1st Half
MTST with only 1 turn over after almost 9 mins of play. Down 12-13, 11:35. Suddenly, MTST committed 5 turn overs in the next mins, and we go on a mini 11-4 run. Up 23-17, 6:30. MTST continued to turn the ball over, and we capitalized on transition pts and FT to extend the lead to double figures
Halftime, Up 36-24
 • Key stat: Turn overs, MTST-11 (10 in the last 11 mins of the 1st half), DELST-5
 • Top performer(s): DELST - SG Gareth Clark 11 pts
2nd Half
MTST opened up strongly on a 9-2 run to cut our lead to 5. We recovered by scoring 8 of our next 10 pts on inside plays, and teams have traded baskets since. Up 49-39, 13:52. MTST cut our lead to 4 twice, but they couldn't get any closer as we converted at least 6 FTs. Both teams in penalty. SG Gareth Clark on the bench with 4 fouls. Up 61-53, 8:50. We continue to get more inside pts. MTST's 1st 3 of game cut the lead to 8; they had chances to cut the lead further but couldn't convert. Up 69-59, 4:19. MTST missed 3 of their next 4 FTs, and that lessened their chances of salvaging this game
• For the 2nd consecutive game, we got 30+ pts in the paint. And the for the 2nd game in a row, we had a big man off the bench scoring in double figures; last game it was C Ray Williams, today PF James Long gave us additional muscle inside

Game #9

Postby randy » Wed Dec 04, 2013 9:45 am

Dec 21, 1962: Lamar (5-4) @ Delaware St (5-3)

1st Half
We dug ourselves on an early hole, going 0-4 FG. Down 2-12, 15:45. Everything not going right, not only on our shooting, but also foul trouble on our starting guards. Down 6-19, 10:48. We made some improvements on our shooting, but our penalty situation hurting us with LAM +8 FTA. We have also maxed out on def reb crash, as LAM is +6 on off reb already. Down 22-31, 5:27. We made a late run, cutting the lead to 5, but LAM quickly doused it with 5 unanswered pts.
Halftime, Down 31-39
 • Key stat: Rebounds, LAM-21, DELST-10
 • The main issue is not our 40% FG or LAM hitting 4-5 3PT, but we are being out hustled
 • Top performer(s): LAM - SG Kareem Linderman - 15 pts; DELST - PF Marcus Campbell - 9 pts.
 • We'll go m2m defense in the 2nd half, double on Linderman. We'll also go favor inside. Max out on both off and def rebounding
2nd Half
We're doing everything we can to defend well, but LAM either keeps getting off rebounds, or the refs calling a foul. Down 39-47, 14:45. Still no improvement; I even got a T for complaining on all the fouls and FTs being given to LAM. Down 43-55, 12:35. I got ejected for my 2nd T. Lead has grown 10 19. Just waiting for the game to finish at the locker room. The team cut it down to 10 with 3:00 remaining. We get a steal and scored 2 on the break.. Down 8. A shot clock violation by LAM, and we scored an inside basket on the other end. Down 6. Of course, we got called for a foul and LAM able to convert both FTs and the lead back to 8 with 1:27 left. We answered back to get it down to 6 again. But as expected, we were whistled for another foul and LAM hits both.
Final Score: Lamar - 78, Delaware St - 72

Notes
 • Despite the discrepancy in rebounds, we played good defense in the 2nd half forcing LAM to miss a lot of outside shots, and their top scorer to only 3 pts in the 2nd half. But LAM's +25 FTA (they shot 32-39 FT, while we had a perfect 14-14 FT) didn't give us the opportunity to let this game be decided by the players. I get my 1st ejection in my 9th game as HC.

Game #10 (start of conference play)

Postby randy » Wed Dec 04, 2013 2:06 pm

Interestingly, my first game as HC for a conference game will be at the school where I started my assistant coaching career

Dec 27, 1962: Delaware St (5-4) @ Norfolk St (6-3)

1st Half
We started 0-5 FG and 3 turn overs; took us almost 4 mins before we scored. Up 7-3, 14:52. FG shooting comparison is 54-31%, but we haven't built a big lead because of our 6 turn overs. Up 17-11, 9:17. Our turn over woes continue. NORST cashing on our penalty situation, and slowly chipped our lead. Tied at 23, 4:36. Absolutely horrendous to watch us throw the ball over and over again
Halftime, Down 28-33
 • Key stat: Turn overs, DELST-12, NORST-5
 • We have also given up 22 pts in the paint
 • Top performer(s): NORST's PF Quentin Tuck 9 pts, 8 rebs; DELST's SF Caleb Carlisle 10 pts
 • We'll go 2-3 zone
2nd Half
3 more turn overs. NORST's 15 pt lead is not insurmountable, but the way we're playing, it seems like a 30 pts lead. Down 31-46, 15:58. We trim down the lead 11 several times, but can't seem to get past it. NORST has made a mockery of our 2-3 zone, continuously getting inside pts and off rebounds. Down 41-52, 11:40. We were not able to break the double digit lead the rest of the way. The only positive is that we played good defense the rest of the 2nd half
Final Score: Delaware St - 52, Norfolk St - 64

Notes
 • We out rebounded NORST, played god defense for most part of the game, and allowed only 1-9 3PT - these stats do not happen very often esp on the road, and we should be winning such games. Unfortunately, we muffed this opportunity.

Game #10

Postby randy » Wed Dec 04, 2013 2:55 pm

Dec 30, 1962: South Carolina St (4-5, 0-0) @ Delaware St (5-5, 0-1)

1st Half
SCST started out hot, 6-8 FG including a couple of 3PTs. I'm not worried about SCST's shooting because they won't be able to sustain that. As long as we take good care of the ball (zero turn overs so far), we should have a good chance of winning. Down 13-14, 13:51. SCST eventually went cold, shooting 3-11 FG. Our offense has not been productive either. Tied at 20, 7:42. Despite SG Gareth Clark's 1-9 FG, we were able to take the lead late in the 1st half.
Halftime, Up 32-26
 • Key stat: Turn overs, SCST-7, NORST-3
 • It goes to show that even if things aren't going well offensively, good things will happen when we do the following right: control the boards (SCST only 3 off rebs and zero 2nd chance pts), and take care of the ball.
 • Top performer(s): DELST's PF Marcus Campbell 13 pts, 6-7 FG
2nd Half
SCST dominating the boards early. SG Gareth Clark scoring 6 of our last 8 pts, but he continues to miss a lot of shots. Up 40-35, 13:31. SCST cut the lead to 1 on a 3pt shot. We committed 3 consecutive turn overs, and eventually SCST took the lead. Down 43-44, 9:47. SCST has grabbed 7 off rebs in the 2nd half; now all those things we did correctly in the 1st half are gone. SCST extended the lead to 5. And then suddenly, SCST can't miss; we found ourselves staring at a double digit deficit. I am completely flabbergasted with the team during the timeout. Down 49-60, 4:48. We cut down the lead to 7 with about 2 mins remaining. Had the chance to reduce further to 5, but we turned the ball over; that pretty much sums up our performance in the 2nd half
Final Score: South Carolina St - 67, Delaware St - 57

Notes
 • A complete reversal in the 2nd half for SCST - only 3 turnovers, 8 off rebounds, 13 2nd chance pts (they had zero in the 1st)
 • I am not pleased with the team because I know we could have been 2-0 in conference play, instead of 0-2. Just wasting a lot of opportunities

Postby randy » Wed Dec 04, 2013 4:11 pm

Jan 3, 1963: Delaware St (5-6, 0-2) @ Bethune-Cookman (3-9, 1-2)

1st Half
Both teams started with identical 5-7 FG. Tied at 12, 14:43. We are attacking the basket relentlessly; however, BETH also having a good game offensively. Up 30-24, 8:38. BETH must be scratching their heads because they shot 50% FG, committed only 5 turn overs, and yet they find themselves down by 9
Halftime, Up 47-38
 • Key stat: FTs, DELST 15-18 FT, BETH 5-10 FT. Our aggressive in attacking the basket paid off, resulting in either a high percentage shot (53% FG) or getting to the line
 • We should not get complacent. Despite our high output in the 1st half, BETH is still only down by single digits
 • Top performer(s): DELST's SG Gareth Clark 8 pts
2nd Half
BETH has hit 3 triples in the 2nd half, but SG Gareth Clark has scored additional 10 pts to bring his total to 18. Up 61-51, 14:19. BETH's 10th triple of the game cut our lead to 1. Up 68-67, 7:39. Teams have traded basket since. We'll go exclusively m2m defense. Up 75-74, 3:46. We committed a turn over and BETH capitalized to take the lead. Exchanging leads after. Still down by 1. Had an opportunity to reclaim the lead, but we turned the ball over.

Down 77-78, 1:55

BETH: Traveling
DELST: Foul. 1-and-1 to SF Caleb Carlisle. Carlisle is 4-4 FT today. Carlisle hits both.

Up 79-78, 1:29

BETH: Another turn over; bad pass. Timeout

Up 79-78, 1:17

DELST: We go to SF Caleb Carlisle. Carlisle shoots from the side and scores! Up 3, 1:04
BETH: Foul. 1-and-1. They get both. Timeout.

Up 81-80, 0:44

We need to go inside

DELST: PF Marcus Campbell gets the ball at the low post. Campbell shoots and scores, plus a foul. Campbell gets the bonus FT. Up 4, 0:36
BETH: They miss a 3. 0:22
DELST: Took a while before they fouled. 0:14. Double bonus. 2 FTs for SG Gareth Clark. Gets both. Up 6, 0:14. That should do it. This time, we avoided a 2nd half collapse
Game #13

Postby randy » Wed Dec 04, 2013 6:57 pm

Jan 6, 1963: Florida A&M (9-3, 2-1) @ Delaware St (6-6, 1-2)

1st Half
Middle of the 1st half and we're still shooting 33% FG, while FLAM already connected on 2 triples. Down 10-15, 9:23. Still shooting cold, but the worse part is we haven't taken advantage of FLAM's 9 turn overs. Down 18-21, 4:24.
Halftime, Down 26-29
 • Key stat: Fast break pts, FLAM 10, DELST 4. Its disappointing because FLAM had 12 turnovers, while we had 7; and yet FLAM took advantage more in getting easy transition baskets
 • Top performer(s): FLAM's SF Andre Evans 8 pts
2nd Half
FLAM had a hot start to the 2nd half, and we went down by 10. We eased our way closer a bit. Down 36-42, 14:20. It's our turn to throw possessions away, and we went down by 10 pts. In FLAM's last possession, they had 4 off rebounds, and finally they hit another 3. Heartbreaking. Down 39-52, 9:32. The misses continue, and we went down by as much as 20. An embarrassing home loss.
Notes
 • I can't even take a 2nd look at the stats comparison, as were beaten in every aspect of the game. It's true that FLAM more turn overs, but we didn't translate them into pts.
 • It is clear that for us to have a chance winning conference games, at least two (or possibly all) among Clark, Campbell, and Carlisle should produce excellent games
 • Speaking of SG Gareth Clark, he has struggled so far, shooting 38% FG after 13 games
