Jan 22, 1964: Delaware St (14-2, 7-0) @ Bethune-Cookman (8-8, 5-2)

Injuries
  1. SG Gareth Clark, broken ankle (93% - 2 days)

1st Half
We will double on BETH's SG Waitari Newman, who is averaging almost 21 ppg. We started slow with 4 turn overs in the 1st 5 mins, but got back on track with our fast break game. All of BETH pts, except for 1 FG, have come from the FT line. Up 21-16, 11:10. We slowly increased our lead with FTs also, more pts in transition, and we even connected on 4 3pt shots.
Halftime, Up 49-30
  • Key stats
    • Fast break pts: DELST 12, BETH 2
    • 3PT shooting: DELST 4-6, BETH 0-6
  • Top performer(s)
    • DELST:PF Jim Barrett, 11 pts, 6 rebs
  • Adjstments
    • None; continue double team on BETH's SG Waitari Newman, who was shutdown to 0-4 FG, 4 pts

2nd Half
Even as we tapered off on our shooting, we still managed to increased our lead with some very good m2m defense, allowing only 3 FGM by BETH in more than 9 mins of play already in the 2nd half. Up 61-37, 10:49. BETH had a furious rally to cut down our lead to 15 ... and then to 10 ... and then to 8. Teams traded 2 FGs each. Up 70-62, 2:33. After we miss, BETH gets another basket. Timeout

Up 70-64, 1:25

We're still in control of this game, so no need to panic. I'll put in a small, 2 PG lineup

DELST: PG Shannon Starkey missed a 3
BETH: We'll go m2m defense. Shooting foul. 2 FTs. Split. Timeout

Up 70-65, 0:51

We'll try to slow down

DELST: They foul right away, but it's only their 5th team foul. They foul 2 more times. 1-and-1 for PG Russell Marquis. Gets the 1st. Also the 2nd. Up 72-65, 0:43. 3 possessions game; we should be ok now

They hit a 3. We converted 2 more FTs. And they get another 3! Wow, BETH is certainly not quitting. They foul again on our next offensive possession

Up 74-71, 0:09

DELST: PG Shannon Starkey to shoot 1-and-1. If he gets the 1st, game should be over. Gets the 1st; and the 2nd. BETH connected on their 3rd consecutive 3pt shot, but time has run out. Perhaps if there was a minute left, we might have lost
Jan 24, 1964: Florida A&M (10-8, 6-3) @ Delaware St (14-2, 7-0)

1st Half
SG Gareth Clark converted on hist 1st attempt. He didn't take a shot afterwards, but dished out 2 assists. After making their 1st 2 field goals (both 3s), FLAM has not scored since. Up 18-6, 12:50. FLAM got back as we had trouble scoring inside due to their 2-3 zone defense. PG Shannon Starkey eventually converted a couple of 3pt shots, which forced FLAM to stretch out their defense

Halftime, Up 36-25
  • Key stats
    • Turn overs: FLAM 12, DELST 5
  • Top performer(s)
    • DELST:PG Shannon Starkey, 11 pts, 3 asts
    • FLAM:PG Curtis Powers, 14 pts, 4-5 3PT
  • Adjustments
    • We'll go m2m defense exclusively. We'll assign/switch a taller defender (an SF) to guard Powers
    • We'll switch to balanced offense focus to counter FLAM's 2-3 zone

2nd Half
We have not allowed FLAM's PG Curtis Powers (4 FTs in the 2nd half) to get another FG, but his quickness made us gave a lot of fouls, and we're already in the penalty. But we have extended our lead courtesy of pts of turn overs. Up 47-31, 12:55. 21 turn overs now for FLAM. Up 59-44, 4:02. We'll slow down the game

Notes
  • PG Shannon Starkey was the perfect zone-buster for us today, as he repeatedly punish FLAM's 2-3 defense with his outside shooting.
  • We were not able to completely stop FLAM's Curtis Powers (26 pts, 6-10 3PT) but he did not get enough support from his team mates
  • SG Gareth Clark clearly has not yet adjusted after a long layoff, shooting 1-8 FG
