We lost both games to South Carolina St last season

Jan 27, 1964: Delaware St (16-2, 9-0) @ South Carolina St (9-10, 3-6)

1st Half
SCST has thrown us off with their 1-3-1 zone, as we started 1-8 FG. We settled down a bit, but SCST has been hitting their outside shots. Down 9-14, 11:09. We turned to our defense, and went on an 12-0 run. Up 21-14, 7:52. SCST came back and tied the game, by hitting 2 more 3pt shots. Game has stayed close since. SCST hits a 3 at the buzzer to break the tie.
Halftime, Down 34-37
  • Key stats
    • 3pt shooting: DELST 1-7, SCST 5-8
  • Top performer(s)
    • DELST:SF Greg Lee, 12 pts
  • Adjustments
    • We'll go m2m defense exclusively
    • We'll switch to balanced offense focus to counter FLAM's 2-3 zone

2nd Half
SCST added 2 more triples, but those were the only shots they made in the 2nd half so far. SG Gareth Clark still struggling with his shots, but good thing SF Greg Lee continues to have a good game. Up 48-43, 13:44. We went on a small 8-2 run to take our 5 pt lead into a double digit advantage. Up 60-49, 8:34. SCST went closer and cut our lead to 7, and then SG Gareth Clark scored 6 pts in 12-0 run that ended any hope for SCST. Up 72-53, 2:32.
Game #20

Postby randy » Sat Dec 07, 2013 12:59 pm

We're now ranked!

Jan 29, 1964: #23 Delaware St (18-2, 10-0) @ Coppin St (9-9, 4-5)

Last Meeting
  • (Home) Won 86-69; we grabbed 17 off rebs and scored 21 2nd chance pts

1st Half
We expected another track fest against CSC. And indeed, there were lots of shot attempts; problem is, we're missing most of them. Down 10-14, 13:17. We clamped down on defense. CSC got into penalty, and we supplemented our scoring from the FT line.
Halftime, Up 37-22
  • Key stats
    • FG%: DELST 42%, CSC 23%
    • 2nd chance pts: DELST 10, CSC 2
  • Top performer(s)
    • DELST:C Ray Williams, 10 pts, 6 rebs
  • Adjustments
    • None

2nd Half
CSC's cold shooting continues. Up 47-25, 13:58. CSC trimmed our lead to as low as 12, courtesy of their bench. Up 55-40, 7:33. Our big men, led by C Ray Williams, took over and finished the job
Final Score: Delaware St - 72, Coppin St - 53

Box Scores
Williams 19, 11, 0, 2 stls (*)
Clark 10, 7, 1
Barrett 9, 9, 2, 2 stls, 7 blks
Carroll 9, 3, 0
Starkey 8, 5, 4
Carlisle 7, 2, 2
Lee 6, 3, 1
Carr 4, 4, 0
Marquis 0, 2, 4
Slater 0, 0, 1
Stats Comparison
FG: 42-32%
REB: +9
TO: -9
Pts in paint: +16
2nd chance: +9
Fast break: -7
Notes
  • C Ray Williams with a double-double, and PF Jeff Barrett a near triple-double (ok, 9-9-7 is more like a "triple-single"). Our perimeter players make us a good team, but when our big men played like they did today, it makes us a dominant team

MEAC Conference Standings
  1. Delaware St 11-0 (W11)
  2. Norfolk St 7-4 (W1)

Game #21

Postby randy » Sat Dec 07, 2013 2:02 pm

This is our 5th game in a 10-day span!

Jan 31, 1964: MD Eastern Shore (10-9, 4-6) @ #23 Delaware St (18-2, 11-0)

Last Meeting
  • (Away) Won 76-59; +30 pts in the paint

1st Half
Everyone thinks we can just show up and run down on MDES today ... including our players. And in most cases, over confidence can be a silent killer. We're shooting less than 30% FG, and everything MDES throws up almost always goes in. Down 8-21, 10:40. We adjusted to a balanced offense to break down MDES' 2-3 zone. Deficit trimmed down to 6 pts near the end of the half
Halftime, Down 26-32
  • Key stats
    • FG%: MDES 48%, DELST 34%
  • Top performer(s)
    • DELST:SF Caleb Carlisle, 6 pts
  • Adjustments
    • Use m2m defense exclusively; increase def intensity to 8
    • Press all the time; it's a "punishment" to the team for playing erratically in the 1st half

2nd Half
We momentarily took the lead, but gave it away easily by turning the ball over in back-to-back possessions. I pulled out PG Shannon Starkey who has been miserable in keeping the ball today, with 7 turn overs. I gave Starkey some "choice words" in the bench. Down 35-36, 15:54. We regained the lead, but once again MDES was quick in coming back and actually hit 4 consecutive shots (including 2 triples). SF Greg Lee spearheaded a 9-0 run, which turned our 8-pt deficit into a 1-pt lead. Up 48-47, 11:16. The attention given by each player to defense paying off, as we hang on to our lead. Up 59-55, 3:56. MDES got into some turn over problems to seal this win
Final Score: MD Eastern Shore - 61, Delaware St - 67

Box Scores
Clark 15, 7, 0 (*)
Carlisle 14, 6, 1
Carr 8, 5, 1

Lee 7, 1, 0
Barrett 6, 7, 1, 3 stls, 2 blks
Williams 5, 2, 1
Marquis 2, 3, 4, 2 stls
Slater 2, 1, 1
Carroll 0, 0, 0
Stats Comparison
FG: 41-46%
REB: +11
TO: -4
Pts in paint: +10
2nd chance: +17
Fast break: +1
Notes
  • Good recovery by the team, and hopefully no more feeling of over confidence and treat each game as a must-win situation.
  • This was another "effort" win, with +11 off rebs and +17 2nd chance pts. Our offense was below average today. But if we continue to do well on rebounding and defense, we'll always give ourselves a chance to win

MEAC Conference Standings
  1. Delaware St 12-0 (W12)
  2. Florida A&M 8-5 (W1)

Game #23

Postby randy » Sat Dec 07, 2013 9:06 pm

A win today will secure the conference championship for us

Feb 3, 1964: Bethune-Cookman (12-11, 9-5) @ #17 Delaware St (20-2, 13-0)

Last Meeting
  • (Away) Won 76-74; BETH almost rallied from a 21-pt with 10 mins remaining in the 2nd half

1st Half
BETH successful in slowing down the pace. Down 9-10, 11:31. The pace of the game made slower by fouls called. Both teams in penalty, and FTs padded the score on each side
Halftime, Tied at 32
  • Key stats
    • Pts in paint: BETH 6, DELST 18
  • Top performer(s)
    • BETH: SG Waitari Newman, 10
    • DELST: PF Jim Barrett, 6 pts, 5 rebs
  • Adjustments
    • Increase pace to 7
    • Double team on Newman

2nd Half
The increase in pace definitely helped us, as we jumped on to an early 12-2 run in less than 4 mins of play. Up 54-44, 11:54. 3 of our starters have 4 fouls each, and BETH inched closer to just a 6 pts deficit with their FTs. The bench players fought hard to bring back our lead to 12. Up 62-50, 6:43. The starting unit finished the game, hitting clutch shots to prevent any possible rally for BETH
