Game #346

Postby randy » Thu Jan 16, 2014 10:55 pm

Jan 18, 2011: #6 Clemson (16-1, 6-0) @ Virginia Tech (7-8, 3-3)

VT managing to keep up despite having 6 turn overs. Tied at 8, 13:16. We're in the penalty and FTA comparison is now 0-11 in VT's favor. However, VT starting to get punished with their turn overs, as we scored on several easy transition baskets. Up 20-12, 7:43. We're still only up by 8 with less than 5 mins remaining, but an 18-3 closing salvo opened up a big gap. Halftime, Up 43-20.

We got the lead up as high to 30 at the start of the 2nd half. VT's offense just beginning to come alive, but it might be too late already for them. Up 56-37, 13:10. They got it down to 16, until we scored a FG after what seems like a long while. Up 59-41, 7:07. We may have missed a lot of shots in the 2nd half, but the intensity on rebounding and defense was still there.

Game #347

Postby randy » Fri Jan 17, 2014 12:47 am

Jan 21, 2011: #6 Clemson (17-1, 7-0) @ Wake Forest (8-8, 2-5)

WF's SG Juan Nicholson exploded for 11 pts already. Down 13-19, 13:23. WF's quick passing has been effective against our defense, getting them a lot of open looks. Down 20-30, 7:44. I inserted seldom-used SG Brian Griffin and walk on PF Roy Gelbard, just to shake things up a bit; somehow it worked as we get ourselves back in this game. Halftime, Down 38-39. But we still have a lot of work to do on defense if we want to win this game; we also need to keep WF out of the off glass

The shooting of PG Chris Hunter helped us secure the lead. But WF still doing a good job handling the ball, with only 5 turn overs, while we have 11. Up 51-48, 13:35. We extended the lead to 7, but WF able to come back and tie the ga,e; it has been close since then. Up 62-61, 7:52. WF able to answer every basket we make. PG Chris Hunter (17 pts) just converted 2 FTs. Both teams in the penalty. Up 72-70, 3:56.

Another foul called on us. 1-and-1 for WF. Made both FTs. Both teams have shot well from the line, WF with 22-28 (79%) while we're shooting 21-24 (88%). Tied at 72, 3:47. SG Brett Holmes gets his jumper to go plus a foul. But Holmes (10 pts) missed the bonus FT. Up 74-72, 3:26.

SG Brett Holmes gets a steal, but Holmes traveled on our offensive play. C Michael Jackson gets a block. WF recovers the ball, puts up a shot, but they missed. We finally secured the def rebound. I called a timeout. Up 74-72, 2:42.

C Michael Jackson missed on the low post. WF with the def board. We got called for a foul. 1-and-1 for WF. They get both FTs to go in. Tied at 74, 2:22. We go back to Jackson. Jackson missed an inside shot again; Jackson has been struggling slightly, 4-10 FG. WF with the ball, looking to regain the lead. WF missed their shot. Jackson with the def rebound. I called a timeout. Tied at 74, 1:44.

We'll try to isolate SG Brett Holmes. Holmes gets the ball, shoots, missed the shot. But C Michael Jackson is there to get the off rebound. WF's defense collapsed on Jackson. Jackson taking a difficult jump shot, and it goes in! Up 76-74, 1:32.

Another foul called on us; I couldn't believe it. 2 FTs for WF. They hit both again. Timeout. Tied at 76, 1:20.

We got called for traveling. WF goes to the low post and scores to take the lead. I called my last timeout. Down 76-78, 0:53.

SG Brett Holmes takes a left corner 3, and buries it! What a big shot by Holmes (13 pts). Timeout WF. Up 79-78, 0:43.

We'll press all the time now. WF goes to the low post again, but our double team was quick to reach this time. WF missed their shot. We get the rebound. I ave no mor etimeouts, so I just shouted that we slow down. 0:19 left. WF fouled. 1-and-1 for PG Chris Hunter. Hunter makes both FTs. Timeout WF. Up 81-78, 0:19.

We'll copntinue to press and go 1-2-2 zone. WF trying to go for a quick 2, but we stole their pass. Another foul on WF. PG Chris Hunter sinks 2 FTs again, and that should do it.

78 pts is the most we have given up this season, but we still escaped with a win

Game #348

Postby randy » Fri Jan 17, 2014 2:41 am

Jan 25, 2011: Florida St (7-10, 2-6) @ #4 Clemson (18-1, 8-0)

We have more turn overs than FLST. Up 13-12, 12:56. Our defense improving, and FLST got into penalty; but we can do some improvement on our 3-8 FT shooting. Up 23-17, 7:13. We played the brand of defense we're supposed to do, but our 8 turn overs has slowed down our offense. Halftime, up 31-24.

FLST has yet to score in the 2nd half. Up 41-24, 13:42. FLST's 1st FG of the 2nd half came at 9:29 mark; it was a bank shot triple. Unless they go crazy from beyond the arc, I dont see FLST coming back from this game. Up 59-34, 6:26. FLST did improve their shooting later on, but only to make the final score more respectable.

Game #349

Postby randy » Fri Jan 17, 2014 3:18 am

Maryland is the highest scoring team in the ACC, and #5 in the country.

Jan 28, 2011: #8 Maryland (18-2, 7-2) @ #4 Clemson (19-1, 9-0)

We're playing tough scrambling defense on their shooters, but MD still able to knock down some tough shots there. Up 14-9, 13:13. Our defense is being challenged by MD's offensive juggernaut. Up 28-25, 6:54. MD got into penalty, and we're able to slowly build up our lead from the FT line. Halftime, up 45-33.

MD's leading scorer SG David Hickerson got his 3rd foul very early in the 2nd half, and that is when things started to go further downward for MD, as they didn;t score a FG until recently. Up 59-39, 13:40. We got into penalty early, but we're still hitting half of our shots to offset the FTs that MD is scoring. Up 70-49, 7:49. MD just exchaging baskets with us, and I pulled out my key players with less than 4 mins left.

We limited one of the best scoring teams in the country, to 17 pts below their average.

Postby randy » Fri Jan 17, 2014 4:08 am

SF Frank Dewitt is back from injury that sidelined him for more than 2 months. He hasn't practiced for a while, so I'll just slowly ease him into the rotation

Feb 1, 2011: Miami (FL) (10-9, 3-7) @ #4 Clemson (20-1, 10-0)

We have countered MIAFL's zone defense with good shooting from our guards. Up 16-4, 12:44. We're a bit late on our double team rotations, and MIAFL able to knock down some outside shot. Up 25-15, 7:32. PG Chris Hunter hit back-to-back 3pt shots, and it extended our lead further which we were able to retain the rest of the 1st half. Halftime, Up 41-23.

C Michael Jackson has owned the interior on both ends of the floor, with 18 pts, and also swatting away 7 shots on defense. Up 53-31, 13:24. Another inspiring performance on defense, as MIA (FL) can't find a way to even get a decent shot. Up 61-31, 7:15. MIA (FL) still stucked at 31 pts with 3 mins left, but out of nowhere they strung up 18 quick pts; too late for a rally though

Game #351

Postby randy » Fri Jan 17, 2014 5:26 am

NC State is the #1 rebounding team in the country. Their 2 starting big men is averaging a combined 22.7 rpg! We can't just simply pack the lane and go 2-3 zone all the way, as NC State is also a good outside shooting team, averaging 39% from beyond the arc

Feb 4, 2011: #4 Clemson (21-1, 11-0) @ #12 North Carolina St (15-5, 9-2)

NCST jumped the gun on us early. Our offense has produced a paltry 2-9 FG and 4 turn overs. Down 4-16, 13:50. We just want to keep this close, and hopefully we can step up our offense later in the game. Down 13-19, 7:47. Still can't get good rhythm on our offense. Worse, NCST's big men started hitting from the outside. Halftime, Down 25-33. We're hanging in there, as long as we can improve our ball handling; we had 9 turn overs in the 1st half

Scoring has been difficult for both teams. We get a small breakthrough after a 3pt shot by PG Chris Hunter. Down 35-40, 13:55. Another 3 by Hunter cut our deficit to just 2 pts. But Hunter picked up his 4th foul a few playes later, and has to head to the bench. We're in the penalty early. Another foul called on us later, and I got a technical for excessive complaining; fortunately NCST missed both technical FTs. Our offense stalled again without Hunter on the floor, and NCST starting to pull away again. Down 40-50, 9:55.

We can't even make our FTs (5-10 so far). I was forced to bring back PG Chris Hunter (4 fouls). More turn overs and more fouls on us. Down 43-57, 6:21. We started increasing pace. Lead ballooned to 19. Cut down the lead to 10, but with only 30 secs remaining. Difficult to make run on game where we committed 20 turn overs, and NCST given +24 FTAs. I was still talking to the refs even after the game, but my assistant coaches able to help me cool down

Postby randy » Fri Jan 17, 2014 6:02 am

Feb 8, 2011: North Carolina (7-14, 4-8) @ #2 Clemson (21-2, 11-1)

Started slow, but we're beginning to roll over UNC now with our current 10-0 run. Up 13-4, 12:56. UNC scored 2 FTs, but it's been like more than 10 mins since they last converted a FG. Up 20-6, 7:16. Lots of FTs for bot teams, to finish the rest of this long 1st half. Halftime, up 42-24.

UNC able to cut down our lead to as low as 14 pts several times. Up 52-37, 13:29. Our lead down to 13, but a 7-0 run quickly doused UNC's momentum. UNC not being able to make any semblance of a rally since. Up 67-48, 7:55.

Game #353

Postby randy » Fri Jan 17, 2014 6:49 am

Feb 11, 2011: #2 Clemson (22-2, 12-1) @ Virginia (14-8, 6-7)

Not pleased with our defense, allowing VA to shoot 4-4 FG. Tied at 13, 13:42. VA can't seem to missed, as they are now 11-13 FG. Both teams in the penalty. Tied at 32, 7:25. We forced some turnovers on VA, and got easy fast break pts, to create some separation but not by much against a team that shot 67% FG. Halftime, Up 54-47.

VA's strategy must be effective, as we're not the one used to a high-scoring game. VA took the lead momentarily earlier, but we scored the last 4 pts. Our defense has to step up. Up 61-58, 13:34. PG Rob Swan getting extended playing time, as PG Chris Hunter in foul trouble most of the game; Swan playing well, with 9 pts 5 asts. We found opportunities to run again because of VA's turn vers, and we raced to a 13 pt lead. But VA is coming back again. Up 73-64, 7:50.

We were able to retain our lead, despite VA adding 2 more 3pt shots. Up 81-72, 3:52. VA split their charities, but they got the off rebound and scored on the put back. Up 81-75, 3:22. SG Brett Holmes scores on a drive. After getting a steal on VA's possession, C Michael Jackson scores on the low post. Up 85-75, 2:22. VA is not yet done, as they hit a 3pt shot. I called a timeout. We'll start to slow things down. Up 85-78, 1:48.

We turn the ball over. Foul called on us. 1-and-1 for VA. They hit both. Timeout again. Up 85-80, 1:24. I wasn't happy during the huddle.

PG Chris Hunter drives strong. Blocked. But Hunter hustles to recover the ball. 2nd serving by Hunter is good! Timeout VA. Up 87-80, 0:57.

VA went to the post. Missed. We get the rebound. That should do it, as VA will just keep on fouling now. It wasn't the kind of game we're comfortable in playing, but the players did a good job in adjusting. PF Adam McLean and PG Rob Swan stepped up their game.

Postby randy » Fri Jan 17, 2014 8:28 am

Feb 15, 2011: #2 Clemson (23-2, 13-1) @ #5 Georgia Tech (19-7, 10-4)

Expect another low scoring game here. We're winning the rebounds battle, but it was offset by our 3 turn overs. Up 10-8, 13:37. We were enjoying a 7 pt lead earlier, but it was easily erased by GT, no thanks to our 6 turn overs. Down 22-25, 7:50. We were not able to keep up with GT's speed in transition, and they are +8 on fast break pts. Halftime, Down 29-42.

We got some baskets early in the 2nd half. GT has yet to convert a FG in the 2nd half, but we're being called for too many shooting fouls on the defensive end, allowing GT to score from the FT line. Down 40-48, 12:56. We scored 2 baskets, but GT able to score 3 more FTs. GT's 1st 9 pts in the 2nd half came from the line, until they scored on a fast break, again coming from our turn over. Down 44-53, 9:36.

4 turnovers by GT on their next 4 possessions. We got an inside basket from C Michael Jackson, and a jumper by SF Frank Dewitt, and we're knocking on the doors. Down 48-53, 7:49. A drive by GT was answered by a 3 from PG Chris Hunter. Down 4. After a turnover by GT, we had the opportunity to cut the lead further, but we failed to convert. We got called for anotehr (we're in the penalty), and GT converts 2 FTs again. Down 51-57, 6:08.

We turned the ball over and GT punished us again with another 2 pts in transition. We were able to score inside. GT missed and we get the ball back. SG Brett Homes missed a 3, but C Wesely Hickman with the off rebound. Hickman missed the putback but got fouled. 2 FTs. Wickman splits. Down 54-59, 4:46.

PG Chris Hunter gets a steal. Hunter with an outlet pass to PF Adam McLean who scored on the break. Another foul called on us. 1-and-1 for GT. They miss the front end. We get the rebound. We go to C Michael Jackson inside. Jackson missed. Loose ball goes to GT. Last media timeout. Down 56-59, 3:53.

Another foul on us. I wanted to curse the refs in front of their face, but a technical would be disastrous at this point. 1-and-1 for GT. They hit both this time. Down 56-61, 3:46.

SF Dennis Johnson drives, gets fouled. 2 FTs. Johnson gets both FTs to fall. Down 58-61, 3:32. We forced a turnover on GT. We run another play on C Michael Jackson. Jackson powers his way inside, and this time he scores! Down 60-61, 2:54.

GT shoots a 3. Missed. We get the rebound. SF Dennis Johnson called for traveling. I am cursing myself why I didn't call a timeout on that play. GT also took too many steps. This time, I called a timeout. Down 60-61, 1:56.

We'll go favor inside. SG Brett Holmes forced a pass inside. Stolen by GT! A jump shot attempt by GT didn't go in, but the refs there was contact. I felt like storming to the court and punching the ref in the face, but I don't think that's a good idea. GT converts both FTs. Timeout. Down 60-63, 1:28.

We go back to a more balanced offense. PG Chris Hunter missed a jump shot. But C Michael Jackson to the rescue once again, getting the off rebound and scoring on the put back. Down 62-63, 1:07.

GT taking some time off the clock. They attempt a 3. Missed. But they get the off rebound. They passed around. Attempts a jump shot. Another foul on us! GT scored 2 FTs again. Timeout. Down 62-65, 0:35.

I put in a 3 guard lineup. No need to force a 3, but if someone is open, we'll take it. We'll foul intentionally in case we missed. GT quickly fouls us. Its their 7th, so 1-and-1 for PG Chris Hunter. Hunter sinks both. Down 64-65, 0:31.

We want them to force to pass to one of their big men, before we foul. We can't foul their PG, as he is 6-6 FT today. GT wisely passing the ball around only to their perimeter players. We have no choice but to foul, before they run out the clock. 2 FTs on their SF who is 4-6 FTs today. But they hit both. Last timeout. Down 64-67, 0:22.

We'll go for 3 now. We have 4 potential 3pt shooters in the floor now. But GT elected to foul again. Proves to be a good strategy as PG Chris Hunter missed the front end of his 1-and-1. GT gets the rebound, and we no other choice but to give up fouls quickly. GT added 2 more FTs, before we hit a 3pt shot but with barely any time left

We had our chances to win. But that big run by GT in the 1st half proved to be the difference, as we played catch up the rest of the game

Game #355

Postby randy » Fri Jan 17, 2014 9:30 am

Feb 18, 2011: Boston College (8-18, 4-11) @ #2 Clemson (23-3, 13-2)

BC's SF Maurice Waters playing well with 7 pts already. Down 9-11, 13:44. We finally got an outside shot to fall; we're 33% FG. Up 16-15, 7:49. BC has a good shooting team (57% FG), but their 14 turn overs severely limited their chances to score. Halftime, Up 38-27.

BC still shooting above 50% FG to keep themselves within striking distance, despite their 17 turn overs. We are also in the penalty. We started going more inside, as BC's big men seem over matched against C Michael Jackson (24 pts). Up 53-38, 12:37. No matter how well you shoot, you can;t expect to win if your opponent has 23 more FGAs; and that's what happened to BC today. Forcing 23 turn overs is good, but what's even better is we only committed 3 turn overs today.
