Game #9 - Las Vegas Winter Jam Semi Finals

Postby randy » Sun Jan 19, 2014 7:31 pm

Dec 17, 2000: (5) Virginia Tech (6-2) vs (1) #13 UCLA (8-0)

Problem is not our 41% FG shooting, but rather we allowed VT to shoot 50%, many of which were easy drives to the basket. Halftime, Down 32-39.

Down 9. We tightened up on defense, as VT converted only 1 of their next 8 FG attempts, and we go on a 12-2 run. Up 45-43, 13:44. We have slowly but steadily increased our lead until it reached double figures. Up 61-50, 6:04.

VT on a late push, as they trim our lead to 5 with just over 2 mins left. After a turn over on our side, VT drives again and scores, plus a foul. They converted the FT. Timeout. Up 66-64, 1:11.

SF Anthony Gray missed on his shot. VT with the chance to tie or take the lead. We stole the ball! Timeout. Up 66-64, 0:52.

Another miss from SF Anthony Gray, this time from 3. Timeout VT. Up 66-64, 0:42.

Traveling on VT. Timeout. Up 66-64, 0:33.

We'll slow things down. VT not fouling. 0:14 left. We throw the ball away! Timeout VT. Up 66-64, 0:13.

VT goes to the low post. They score, and time expired. We go to OT. End of Regulation, Tied at 66.

We get a steal on our 1st defensive play. VT gets a counter steal. We score on a drive. Up 2. VT answers with a jumper. Tie. We miss. VT also missed. We miss again. We defended well on their drive attempt, and VT also missed. SG James Davis hits a big 3! Up 71-68, 2:31 OT.

We stopped another penetration drive by VT. SG James Davis is feeling it. He asks for the ball and gets it. Davis fires up another 3 and its good! Up 74-68, 1:56 OT.

VT called for traveling. SG James Davis missed this time. We got calle dfor a foul. We're in the penalty. 1-and-1 for VT. They miss the front end. Timeout. Up 74-68, 0:56 OT.

We'll slow things down. VT repeatedly foul until they got into penalty. We converted 2 FTs to ice the game.

Our defense was excellent during the OT period

Game #10 - 2010 Las Vegas Winter Jam Finals

Postby randy » Mon Jan 20, 2014 12:54 am

Dec 18, 2000: (2) Marshall (6-2) vs (1) #9 UCLA (9-0)

SG James Davis slightly injured (91%), and can only play sparingly today.

MARS shot 4-4 3PT and 46% FG overall, while we're slightly off from the perimeter at 3-15 3PT. We hold a slight lead because of MARS 13 turn overs. Halftime, Up 32-31.

It remained a tight game, as no team led by more than 3. Until PG Mac Jefferson's 3pt shot initiated a 7-0 run to give us an 8 pt lead. Up 49-41, 12:13. We were able to maintain our lead, as MARS continued to have its turn over woes. They just turned the ball over for the 23rd time in their last play. Up 60-54, 2:30.

A drive by SF Anthony Gray, and then a drop off at the last sec to give an easy basket for C Troy Jones. Nice play by Gray. Up 62-54, 2:13. MARS scores on an offensive rebound putback. Up 62-56, 2:00. We break their press and scored on the break. Up 64-56, 1:48. MARS missed. I called a timeout. Up 64-56, 1:26.

We'll start to slow things down. We scored on 3 FTs on consecutive fouls by MARS, effectively sealing the game for us. Champions of Las Vegas!

Game #11

Postby randy » Mon Jan 20, 2014 2:52 am

Dec 18, 2000: #9 UCLA (10-0) @ Saint Mary's (4-5)

SG James Davis is still slightly injured (96%), but will play today

Both teams not shooting well. PG Mac Jefferson scored 7 pts in the last 2 minutes of the 1st half, and that's the difference in the game so far. Halftime, Up 34-28.

We go on a 6-0 run to start the 2nd half, and double our lead to 12. We pretty much maintain our double digit advantage the rest of the game, leading as high as 21.

Game #12

Postby randy » Mon Jan 20, 2014 3:46 am

Dec 28, 2000: USC (4-5, 0-0) @ #8 UCLA (11-0, 0-0)

We raced to an 11-0 lead. And even after USC scored their 1st pts at the 15 min mark, we followed up with another 15-2 run. And the rout continues. We shot 8-17 3PT in the 1st half. Halftime, Up 56-22.

That level of offensive performance we had in the 1swt half was a tough act to follow. Although our shooting in the 2nd half dipped, our intensity in defense remained consistent, and I was pleased with that.

Postby randy » Mon Jan 20, 2014 4:21 am

Dec 31, 2000: Arizona St (6-4, 0-1) @ #8 UCLA (12-0, 1-0)

Both teams shot a high clip of 53% FG, but AZST got much fewer opportunities to score because of their 16 1st half turn overs. Halftime, Up 54-35.

SG James Davis rediscovered his shooting touch in the 2nd half, and not giving AZST any hope of a comeback.

Game #14

Postby randy » Mon Jan 20, 2014 6:23 am

Jan 4, 2001: #6 UCLA (13-0, 2-0) @ Oregon (7-5, 0-2)

OR's C DeVante Murphy 3rd in the nation with 11.4 rpg

We are barely making enough outside shots (6-19 3PT), just to neutralize OR's 2-3 zone. OR is +10 in FT attempts. Halftime, Down 33-37.

Evey time we're poised to make big surge, OR able to answer esp with tehir outside shots. Their latest 12-0 run turned a slim 2 pt lead into a 12 pt advantage. Down 44-58, 7:04.

We go with a smaller lineup, hoping for more quickness and outside shooting. We get the lead down to 6. Down 58-64, 1:43. We get a steal and scored on the break. Down 60-64, 1:30. OR called for a charge. Timeout. Down 60-64, 1:20

We miss a 3. OR wisely using as much clock as possible. They score. Down 60-66, 0:32. We'll go for 3s. We turn the ball over. No choice but to give up fouls. Time run out as we had to give many fouls before we got to penalty.

Good effort by the players in trying to mount a late comeback. But the shooting is not there today. Take away SG James Davis' 6-13 FG performance, our other perimeter players combine for less than 25% FG (10-41).

Postby randy » Mon Jan 20, 2014 6:59 am

Jan 7, 2001: Arizona (7-6, 2-1) @ #6 UCLA (13-1, 2-1)

ARIZ's C BJ Cooper 1st in the nation with 13.1 rpg

We're lucky to get a 13 pt lead early, as it provided a cushion during the latter part of the 1st half when we were turning the ball a lot of times, and getting to FT line 8 more times than us. ARIZ able to tie, but we scored the last 5 pts of the half. Halftime, Up 36-31.

Our offense won't be enough to beat ARIZ, so we put more focus on defense. ARIZ had only 1 FG made the 1st mins of the 2nd half. Up 50-35, 14:01. Our shots began to fall middle part of teh 2nd half, and the latest 3 PG Mac Jefferson gave us a 22 pt lead. Up 68-46, 8:44. The bench warmers able to play

Jan 11, 2001: #6 UCLA (14-1, 3-1) @ California (8-5)

CAL started the game with 1-14 FG, and ended up the 1st half shooting only 23%. It's not a safe lead though, as we only fared a little better at 39% FG. Halftime, Up 36-23.

We increased the lead to 20 at the 14 min mark, and it was smooth sailing since then. We played good perimeter defense today.

Postby randy » Mon Jan 20, 2014 11:24 am

Jan 14, 2001: Utah (10-4, 2-3) @ #6 UCLA (15-1, 4-1)

UTAH with 12 1st half turn overs; we also did better on off rebounding, and it gave us a differential +16 in FG attempts. Halftime, Up 31-22.

UTAH got to within 5. Our bigs have scored well inside the paint to keep us ahead. And when SG James Davis re enters the floor, he hits 4 consecutive 3pt shots, and our lead ballooned to 20 pts around 8 min mark; game over at that point. 2nd half scoring was 48-15.
