Game #57

Injury
  • SG Steve Bradford - broken nose (47%, 39 days)

Feb 4, 2002: #13 UCLA (19-3, 8-3) @ Colorado (6-14, 3-8)

COL shot a decent 44% FG in this high scoring game; ours is just a little better at 50%. The rest of the were almost even, which explains how close the score is. Halftime, Up 47-44.

COL got off to fast start, connecting on a coupe of 3s, which allowed them to take a 1 pt lead. Score was close for the next few minutes, before our shooters started connecting from the outside. Up 68-58, 12:20. COL came back with a torrid 11-0 run, which included 3 triples, to retake a 1pt lead. We answered with a 3, and the game is very close once again. Tied at 73, 7:41.

We connected on 2 more 3pt shots, but COL has scored more pts to establish a 3pt lead heading in to the final stretch of this game. Down 79-82, 3:54.

COL made a turn over. But we also turned the ball over, resulting in a fast break opportunity for COL. COL missed teh shot but got fouled; they hit 2 FTs. Down 5. We miss another shot. We get a steal on the other end. And then another miss shot on our end shots not falling when we needed them the most. We got called for another foul; we're in the penalty. COL missed the front end. We secure the rebound. We go C Troy Jones, who hit a basket from the low post. Down 81-84, 2:08.

We need a stop. But the refs will award 2 FTs again to COL. COL gets both FTs to fall in. Down 5 again. We turned the ball over on a bad pass. COL missed, but they get the off rebound. They chew up some more clock, until we came up with a steal. 0:53. We'll go for 3s. We missed a 3. We'll have to foul. COL hits both FTs to make this a 3 possession game; no chance now

We led by double digits in the 1st half, and also in the 2nd half. On both occasions, we let COL get back, and eventually we lost in the end game. A winnable game that we threw away; no one else to blame this loss but ourselves.

Game #58

Postby randy » Thu Jan 23, 2014 10:54 am

Injury
  • SG Steve Bradford - broken nose (47%, 35 days)

Feb 7, 2002: Arizona St (11-10, 5-7) @ #14 UCLA (19-4, 8-4)

Another one of those games where our opponent is shooting poorly (AZST is 28% FG), and yet we can't pull away because of a combination of our turn overs, fouls, and giving up offensive rebounds. AZST then able to sneak in with the lead before half time. Halftime, Down 28-29.

More turn overs and more fouls, and all of a sudden we're down 8. Our home crowd getting restless. We were able to get back and reclaim the lead, with our 3pt shooting. We extended our run by hitting 2 more baskets, and AZST forced to call an early timeout. Up 44-38, 14:04.

We managed to keep the lead, although AZST staying close most of the time. But a mini-run by us has pushed the lead to 17, which is likely enough enough to guarantee us a win. Up 72-55, 3:05.

Score suggests we had a lopsided win. But we certainly had to worked hard on this one, and had to rely on a collapse by AZST to get this win.

Injury
  • SG Steve Bradford - broken nose (47%, 32 days)

Feb 10, 2002: #14 UCLA (20-4, 9-4) @ #12 Oregon (18-4, 10-3)

A promising start as we ht 2 consecutive 3s to take an early 6-0. But that's about the only highlight we had in the 1st half. OR came back with an 8-0 run, and that was just the prelude to a blow out. OR shot an eye-popping 68% FG, and as a bonus, they went to the line countless of times, shooting 13-16 FT. Halftime, Down 30-64. Our usually reliable scorer SF Anthony Gray is 0-9 FG in the 1st half

Another fantastic start, as we go on a 13-0 run. Just 21 pts more to go. Down 43-64, 15:45. We're winning the 2nd half so far. Down 62-78, 6:23. No miracle comeback though.

What perplexes me is that we shown, at least tin the 2nd half, that we are capable of playing defense against arguably the top team in the Pac 12, on their home court; then why didn't we performed that way in the 1st half? We outscored OR 40-20 in the 2nd half.

Injury
  • SG Steve Bradford - broken nose (55%, 28 days)

Feb 14, 2002: Arizona (16-7, 11-3) @ #15 UCLA (20-5, 9-5)

We are #16 in the bubble watch. Getting a top 4 seed in the NCAA tournament is still a realistic possibility, but we have to win all our remaining games (3 at home), starting today.

We were clearly the hungrier team in the 1st half, esp on defense, as we limited ARIZ to 30% FG. We also shot 8-16 3PT. Halftime, Up 46-27.

Despite the dip in our FG shooting, our defense did not collapse, and didn't let ARIZ go below 12 of our lead.

PF Jason White went down with an injury in the 2nd half

Game #61

Postby randy » Thu Jan 23, 2014 12:35 pm

Injuries
  • PF Jason White - bruised thigh (67%, 11 days)
  • SG Steve Bradford - broken nose (60%, 25 days)

Feb 17, 2002: #15 UCLA (21-5, 10-5) @ California (15-11, 6-9)

We were leading by as high as 14 in this low-scoring match, but CAL able to come back, as we matched their 9 1st half turn overs. Halftime, Tied at 29.

CAL got off on a 9-0 run, as we keep on missing our shots, and added 2 more turn overs. Our deficit extended to 12 pts; our offense has faltered at 30% FG and 13 turnovers. We're also in the penalty early. Down 35-47, 11:30.

We have come backed, and got back on top, as we hit 4 triples as part of a 19-6 run. Up 54-53, 4:39. But CAL able to answer quickly with 5 straight pts. Timeout. Down 54-58, 3:12.

We split our FTs as both team now in the penalty. Down 3. We get a stop. And then C Troy Jones scoring on offensive rebound put back. Down 57-58, 2:18.

We got called on a shooting foul. CAL hits both. Down 3. We turn the ball over. We got called on another foul. CAL splits. Timeout. Down 57-61, 1:45.

SF Anthony Gray fakes a 3, gets closer, and hits a jumper. Down 2. Gray gets a block on the defensive end. We get the ball back. Timeout. Down 59-61, 1:03.

We draw up a play for SF Anthony Gray. Gray gets the pass. But Gray sees the open SG James Davis. Davis shoots from downtown. Davis scores a 3! Timeout CAL. Up 62-61, 0:54.

CAL missed a 3. We dribbled to our front court. Timeout. Up 62-61, 0:36.

I instructed last shot. But PG Jacob Hawkins puts up an early 3. Why? Missed. CAL rebounds. Timeout CAL. Up 62-61, 0:25.

We got called for a "ghost foul". I was mad at the call; I get a warning frm the refs. Double bonus so 2 FTs. CAL hits both. Down 62-63, 0:22. We have no timeouts left.

We couldn't get a shot inside. We rotate the ball around. Ball ends up with SF Abdul Pebbles, who puts up a long one and drains the 3! CAL also with no timeouts. Up 65-63, 0:09.

I shouted that we press. CAL able to cross the timeline, but with little time left. CAL's SG Paul Rivera puts up a desperation 3. Rivera's shot is in! Time expired. What a disappointing loss

Postby randy » Thu Jan 23, 2014 3:28 pm

Injuries
  • PF Jason White - bruised thigh (67%, 7 days)
  • SG Steve Bradford - broken nose (66%, 21 days)

Feb 20, 2002: Utah (16-10, 9-7) @ #16 UCLA (21-6, 10-6)

Poor defense and turn overs got us into another horrible start, and we were down 4-16. Tried to come back, but UTAH keeps coming up good offensive plays, and we went down by 12 again, 16-28. A late push, but we're not yet our of the woods. Halftime, Down 31-36. Foul count in the 1st half was 8-1, in UTAH's favor

Teams trading baskets at the start of the 2nd half. We finally got a mini run, started by a 3 from SG James Davis, and we eventually tied the game. Tied at 42, 14:40. UTAH not yet done, and they even got the lead back by 4. We scored 5 unanswered, and the lead changes hands once again. Up 49-48, 11:26.

Down 1, up 1, down 1, up 1. Game has turned into a see-saw battle, but no one able to score for the past 3 mins. We finally get the lead up to 3. And then a UTAH turn over, resulting in an easy layup for us. Another defensive stop, and we converted a FT at the other end. UTAH forced to call a timeout. Up 58-52, 4:59.

UTAH able to score a FT, and then they get a steal resulting in an easy score. Up 3. We scored on a drive, but UTAH answers back with an inside basket. Up 60-57, 3:53.

We scored inside. Up 5. We get a steal, and another transition basket for us. Up 7. UTAH able to score. Up 5. We got called for a traveling. We get a steal once again, but we're not able to convert on our set play. Another UTAH turnover. Timeout. Up 64-59, 1:31

We miss. We get a shot block on UTAH's offense, and were able to recover the ball. UTAH comes away with a shot block also, and get the ball back. Timeout UTAH. Up 64-59, 0:41

UTAH missed a 3, and they intentionally fouled afterwards. We converted 2 FTs to make it a 3 possession game, and that ended UTAH's chances in this game. Very difficult to put them away.

Feb 24, 2002: Oregon St (13-13, 10-7) @ #16 UCLA (22-6, 11-6)

Another disastrous start, as we committed 5 turnovers in the 1st 4 mins. We got down 5-19, after ORST's 3rd 3pt shot of the game. Today is seniors' day, but it was freshman SF Abdul Pebbles who almost single handedly carried this team to come back, and take the lead before half time. Pebbles had 20 pts, 8-10 FG. Halftime, Up 40-34.

We started with a 7-0 run, to give ourselves a 13 pt lead. We built our lead, and SF Abdul Pebbles 4th triple of the game gave us a 20 pt lead. We protected our double digit lead the rest of the way.

Better production of our bigs inside the paint. Our defense also held ORST to only 32% FG. Halftime, Up 41-28.

By the time ORST scored their FG of the 2nd half in 14:46 mark, we were already leading by 20 then. Starters get an early rest. Every one, including walk ons, got to see some action

Mar 11, 2002: (3) #15 UCLA (24-6, 12-6) vs (10) Arizona St (15-14, 7-11)

The recent upsets opens up a bog door of opportunity for us. But we still have a lot of work to do if we want to win the Pac 12 tournament

Nice to see our outside shooting is on target today, 8-13 3PT. But even better is our defense which had shown good improvement. We limited AZST to 25% FG. Halftime, Up 47-23.

Starters got to play only the 1st 6 mins of the 2nd half. Every one played again, and even SG Steve Bradford got to see his 1st action after more than 2 months in the injured list
