Game #47

Postby randy » Wed Jan 22, 2014 2:25 pm

Dec 30, 2001: #14 UCLA (11-1, 0-1) @ Arizona St (6-4, 0-1)

We were shooting well early, but we started missing a lot of shots towards the end of the 1st half, allowing AZST to to take the lead. AZST has shot consistently at 48% FG. Halftime, Down 39-41.

We're finally playing good defense, not allowing ARIZ to get their 1st FG of the 2nd half until the 14:28 mark. Up 51-44, 12:22. AZST was able to reclaim the lead later on 2 consecutive transition baskets as a result of our turn overs. Down 60-61, 7:00.

More turn overs and misses from us; fortunately for us, AZST has not added to their score either. We get the lead back as SF Anthony Gray put up 5 straight pts, including a 3pt shot. Up 65-61, 3:39.

AZST able to answer with a 3pt shot also. Up 1. A couple of plays later on, SG James Davis scores a triple as well, and we get our lead back up to 4. AZST came back with another 3. We're in for another tight finish. Timeout. Up 68-67, 2:18.

SF Anthony Gray hits a pull up jumper. Up 3. AZST drives. C Troy Jones came over to help, and AZST came up with a contested shot. Missed. Good defense by Jones. We get the rebound. SG James Davis fires up a 3. Missed. AZST with the rebound. AZST fires up a 3, and it goes in! Timeout. Tied at 70, 1:05.

We get the ball to SF Anthony Gray. Gray passed to C Troy Jones on the low post. Jones strong move to the basket, shoots, gets his shot to fall plus a foul! Jones converts the bonus. Timeout AZST. Up 73-70, 0:55.

C Troy Jones comes away with a block. We recover the ball. Timeout. Up 73-70, 0:38.

We're chewing up some clock. SG James Davis got open and couldn't resist putting up a 3. He missed. Timeout ARIZ. Up 73-70, 0:20.

AZST trying to set up a 3. We came away with a deflection. Still 0:10 left. AZST to inbound again. They put a quick 3. Missed. But they get the off rebound. 0:05 left. Kickout pass. Another 3. Missed again. We secured the rebound and time expired. Whew. No easy road games now

Game #48

Postby randy » Wed Jan 22, 2014 11:24 pm

Jan 3, 2002: #14 Oregon (10-1, 2-0) @ #10 UCLA (12-1, 1-1)

Down 16-33 earlier, as OR has been shooting well not only from the outside, but also on their drive plays. We cut it down to 11 on a 6-0 run, bu repeated fouls called on us allowed OR to increase their lead back to 19. I got called for a technical for excessive complaining. We worked our way back a little bit, but we're still in a deep hole unless we significantly improve our defense. Halftime, Down 34-46.

Back-to-back 3s by OR put our deficit up to 17. We can't get an extended rally because of our turn overs. We're just grinding it our to keep close. A 3pt shot by SF Anthony Pebbles got us to within 10. Down 51-61, 8:20.

We scored on 2 FTs, a couple of stops, we scored on a jumper, we get another steal and score on the break. We are back in this game. Down 57-61, 6:25.

OR scored. Fouls continuously being called on us and we got into penalty. OR scored 2 more FTs, and we go down by 8 again. SF Anthony Gray to cut our deficit to 5. We get a stop. Gray missed what could have been a big 3. Last media timeout. Down 60-65, 3:39.

OR hits a big 3 instead. Down 8. We split our FTs. Down 7. Anotehr foul on us, but OR missed the front end. We miss a 3. OR missed. Timeout. Down 61-68, 2:24.

We go with a smaller lineup. SF Anthony Pebbles gets a basket. Down 5. But another foul called on us. OR hits 2 FTs. Down 7. Pebbles missed his shot. OR came back with another 3, and we go down by 10. Down 63-73, 1:31.

We need to start shooting 3s. But we traveled instead. Our 1st home loss since I arrived here at UCLA. OR is a good team with 2 star players (their PG and C), but it was their supporting players who did most of the damage today.

Postby randy » Thu Jan 23, 2014 12:54 am

Jan 6, 2002: #10 UCLA (12-2, 1-2) @ Arizona (8-4, 3-0)

ARIZ jumped in on an early 17-6 lead. SF Anthony Gray doing his best to keep us in the game. Back-to-back triples by SG James Davis got us to within 3. But ARIZ able to hold on to their lead. ARIZ didn't commit a single turn over in the 1st half. Halftime, Down 30-36.

We hit 3 3pt shots already in the 2nd half, but our deficit further increased because of our turn overs (11 already) and giving ARIZ more chances to score. Down 41-53, 11:03.

A couple more turn overs, and we go down by 14. We fought back, reducing the deficit to 8. SG Steve Bradford went down with an injury. Down 6 after a jumper by SF Anthony Gray. We get a steal, and scored on the break. Down 57-61, 4:13.

We got called for a foul, and ARIZ able to hit 2 FTs. Down 6. SF Anthony Gray answers with another FG. Down 4. ARIZ missed. We scored courtesy of PG Jacob Hawkins. Down 61-63, 3:00.

A big 3 by ARIZ. Down 5. We missed. We got called for yet another foul, and ARIZ scored 2 FTs again. Timeout. Down 61-68, 1:58.

We didn't score again as we missed 4 consecutive shots. This is turnong out to be a very challenging season.

Injury
  • SG Steve Bradford - broken nose (47%, 63 days)

Jan 10, 2002: California (9-6, 0-4) @ #14 UCLA (12-3, 1-3)

Not a good start defensively, but we got better as the game went along; CAL committed 11 turn overs. We got our shooting touch back, going 7-9 3PT, and 64% FG overall. Halftime, Up 51-33.

SG James Davis got into one of his shooting streaks at the start of the 2nd half. CAL tried to stay in the game, and got to within 9 pts on the heels of back-to-back 3s. But that was the closest they've come, and we hang on for this much needed win.

Injury
  • SG Steve Bradford - broken nose (47%, 60 days)

Jan 13, 2002: #14 UCLA (13-3, 2-3) @ Utah (10-5, 3-2)

Cold shooting at the start, 1-10 FG. UTAH also did not shoot well, and we came back, and even took a 4 pt lead. But UTAH finished with a strong 13-4 run to end the 1st half. Halftime, Down 30-35.

We keep grinding it out, behind the tireless efforts of SF Anthony Gray. We were able to tie the game at least 3 times, but the fouls being called on us is becoming is ridiculous; we're in the penalty already. Down 45-47, 11:42.

We committed a couple of traveling violations, and allowed UTAH to go up by 8 again. We come back playing catch up again. We had 3 chances to cut the lead to 1 (or tie), but we all missed those opportunities. Finally on the 4th try, SF Abdul Pebbles rattled one from 3. Tied at 55, 6:03.

UTAH scored on a 3pt play opportunity. Down 3. SG James Davis drains a 3 to tie the game once again. UTAH missed. We had the chance to take the lead, but we muffed it. UTAH awarded 2 FTs; they missed both, but got the off rebound and putback to go in. Down 2. SG James Davis gets the ball again, and drills in another 3. Up 61-60, 4:12.

And yet anotehr foul called on us. UTAH hits both FTs. Down 1. But SG James Davis must be feeling it now. He demanded the ball back, gets it, shoots another, and scores again. Up 64-62, 3:53.

UTAH missed. We get the ball back, but we turned it over. UTAH called for traveling on the next play. SG James Davis with another 3pt shot, his 6th of the game! Up 67-62, 3:02.

Another foul on us. UTAH hits both FTs. We miss a shot on the low post. UTAH missed a 3. SG James Davis likewise missed his shot from deep. UTAH gets one to fall from the post. Timeout. Up 67-66, 1:37.

UTAH gets a steal. We're playing good defense not allowing good looks. UTAH with 5 sec on the shot clock. Refs called a foul. I was furious on the call. Double bonus so 2 FTs for UTAH. They miss the 1st, hit the 2nd. Timeout. We have 2 starters already out on 5 fouls. Tied at 67, 1:00.

We miss a 3. But SF Anthony Gray is there for the off rebound. Gray's putback is good! Timeout UTAH. Up 69-67, 0:39.

UTAH gets a nice isolation low post play, but they missed an easy inside shot. We get the rebound. Timeout. Up 69-67, 0:27.

We'll slow down, and UTAH possibly will foul. UTAH did foul. 1-and-1 for SG James Davis, but Davis missed the front end. UTAH rebounds. Timeout UTAH. Up 69-67, 0:24.

UTAH tries to go for a win with a 3. Missed. We get the ball. Foul on UTAH again. 1-and-1 for PG Sam Beck. Beck nails both FTs, to make this a 2 possession game. Up 71-67, 0:10.

UTAH makes a 3. But only 1 sec left. We were able to dribble the remaining time. A lucky escape once again.

We have a lot of freshman we're trying to develop and give playing time. But on games like this, we rode on the shoulders of 2 senior, SG James Davis and SF Anthony Gray.

Jan 17, 2002: Oregon St (7-8, 4-2) @ #14 UCLA (14-3, 3-3)

Got off to a 22-4 lead in less than 8 mins, and never looked back since then. Best part of our performance in the 1st half was that we only had 1 turn over. Halftime, Up 55-32.

Teams simply traded baskets in the 2nd half, and we get an easy win.

  • SG Steve Bradford - broken nose (47%, 53 days)

Jan 20, 2002: #14 UCLA (15-3, 4-3) @ #21 Stanford (12-5, 3-4)

We face a fellow ranked team who is also having an up-and-down Pac 12 season

We never trailed for most of the 1st half, as our defense held STAN to only 31% FG, with 0-8 3PT. We rebounded well esp on the off glass, and generated a lot of 2nd chance pts. But this is not yet a safe lead, as STAN had the talent to quickly put up pts. Halftime, Up 45-30.

Our shots can't fall, we got into early penalty again, and our lead dwindled down to 7 as STAN hit their 1st 3pt shot pf the game, after 0-12 from downtown. Up 54-47, 11:21. We also committed too many turn overs in the 2nd half. PG Jacob Hawkins has fouled out, and his back up PG Sam Beck with 4 fouls. STAN clearly having the momentum, and I had to burn a timeout earlier. Up 60-56, 7:58.

I have to use 3rd string (walk on) PG Jarni Bickerstaf to give PG Sam Beck some rest. We made some stops, and SG James Davis' 3pt shot gave us an 8 pt cushion. On their next play, STAN converted on a 3pt play opportunity. Up 5. We made a couple more stops, C Lee Maloney got a ut back FG, and then later on Davis with another 3! Up 74-64, 2:51.

STAN had 4 consecutive unsuccessful possessions before they hit a 3, but there is no more time left. We get ourselves a huge road win, and possibly our season is beginning to turn around now.

Jan 24, 2002: USC (12-5, 8-0) @ #14 UCLA (16-3, 5-3)

Analysts must be scratching their heads, and certainly did not expect that USC would be the only remaining undefeated team in the Pac 12 regular season. USC defeated us on Pac 12 opening day, on a last-second, game-winning shot. It would be great to not only avenge that loss, but also giving USC its 1st defeat in the Pac 12.

Both teams each had only 1 FG made in the 1st 5 mins of the game. USC doing a better job on rebounding, with 10 off rebounds already. We were the slightly better shooting team, and we also forced 10 turn overs on USC. We were leading by 14 late in the 1st half, when USC unloaded an 8-0 run. Halftime, Up 38-32.

Teams traded the 1st 5 pts each. After that, we go on a 20-6 run, which included 4 triples, to go up by 20. Up 63-43, 12:18. We coasted along for most of the remainder of the game. USC had one last push, trimming our lead to 12 with just over 2 mins left, but we scored 7 straight unanswered after that to douse off their mini-rally.

Same story in the 1st half, as turn overs continue to pile up on WASH, finishing 19. We get our lead to as high as 23, until we slowed down during garbage time.

Game #56

Postby randy » Thu Jan 23, 2014 7:32 am

Injury
  • SG Steve Bradford - broken nose (47%, 42days)

Jan 31, 2002: Washington St (6-14, 3-7) @ #13 UCLA (18-3, 7-3)

We can't get anything on our offense early in the game, and we go down 6-19. We buckled down on defense, and able to score 11 straight, before WASHST scored again. We got ahead by 7 pts, thanks to SG James Davis who went on a scoring rampage of 11 straight pts. Halftime, Up 34-27. A 20 pt turn around in the 1st half

WASHST scored the 1st basket of the 2nd half, a 3pt shot, to get themselves to within 4. But that proved to be the last "rally" of WASHST, as we continuosly built up a good lead the rest of the way. Another good defensive performance, and excellent shooting display by SG James Davis.

Final Score: Washington St - 48, UCLA - 74
