Injuries
  • SG Steve Bradford - broken nose (96%, 2 days)

Mar 12, 2002: (3) #12 UCLA (25-6, 12-6) vs (8) Stanford (20-11, 8-10)

A tough regular season was rewarded with an appearance in the Pac 12 tournament finals, something we weren't able to achieve last year.

A rough shooting start for us, 0-6 FG. 2 FTs and a couple of 3pt shots by SG James Davis kick started our offense. Down 8-10, 13:31. We had 3 fast break opportunities that resulted in 2 offensive fouls, and a missed layups; we're wasting our chances to take control of this game. Down 17-19, 6:59. Our 7-12 3PT shooting helped us take the lead after the 1st half. Overall, both teams shot below 35% FG, and had a lot of turn overs each, but we rebounded slightly better. Halftime, Up 38-30.

We went more to C Troy Jones at the start of teh 2nd half, and JOnes has delivered scoring 9 of our 1st 13 pts after the break. Up 51-38, 13:41. Quality minutes for the comebacking SG Steve Bradford, 6 pts, 2 rebs in 6 mins of action. Up 61-46, 7:30.

Last ditch rally for STAN. Up 65-56, 3:07. We have dominated the boards on both ends of the floor, which prevented STAN from getting more opportunities to score. Up 70-58, 0:33. That should do it.

UCLA wins their 10th Pac 12 title. It was 14 years ago (1988) since UCLA won the title.

Postby randy » Fri Jan 24, 2014 2:45 am

Injury
  • SF Abdul Pebbles - a sore arm (93% - 1 day); won't play unless absolutely necessary

Mar 17, 2002: (14) South Dakota (23-7, 10-4) vs (3) #10 UCLA (26-6, 12-6)

Scouting Report
  1. Primary defense: M2M
  2. Offense focus: Inside (slow)
  3. Key players:
    • So PG Marvin Gresham (16.8 ppg, 42% 3PT, All Conf)
    • Sr SG Chris McClintock (11.4 ppg, 42% 3PT)
  4. Strengths:
      Shooting: 47.4% FG (#14), 39.3 % 3PT (#20)
  5. Weaknesses:
      Rebounding: 29.7 rpg (#239)
      Defense: 44.0% opp FG (#149), 34.6% opp 3PT (#178)
  6. How they got here:
    • Finished 1st The Summit; Won Conference Tournament
Strategies
  1. We play against one the best shooting teams in the country. We have to harass their guards, and force them to give up the ball.

Start of 1st half

We had some success pressuring SDAK's guards, but their other players have picked up their offense. Up 11-10, 13:26. SDAK has not had a FG for almost 6 mins now. Up 18-13, 7:52. We did a good job on defense, and it has more than made up our erratic outside shooting in the 2st half. Halftime, Up 38-26.

Key stats / Notes (Halftime)
  • FG shooting: SDAK 31%, UCLA 47%
  • Turnovers: SDAK 11, UCLA 4
  • Good overall game so far from SF Anthony Gray, 12 pts, 5 rebs. SG Steve Bradford providing bench scoring once again, 10 pts, 2-4 3PT.

Start of 2nd half

We stole 3 more passes in the 1st 2 mins of the 2nd half. But SDAK's starting guards trying to shoot their way back into this game. Up 48-38, 13:14. SDAK scored 5 unanswered to cut our lead into half, at 5 pts. We recovered a little bit, but SDAK's guards continues to shoot well. We've got ourselves a ball game here. Up 56-51, 7:29.

We continued to play good defense, getting 4 more steals (we have a total of 16 steals already). But SDAK does not want to go away, and they get to within 3 pts of our lead after a successful low post play. Up 61-58, 2:49. On our next play, SG James Davis sinks a 3 pt shot. Up 6. We made a defensive stop, and I called a timeout. Up 64-58, 1:57.

We miss an open jumper. SDAK goes to the low post again, and they scored again. Up 64-60, 1:22. C Troy Jones trying to answer back. Jones missed an inside, but he got the rebound; Jones got fouled before he can attempt a follow up. Sideline throw in. SG Anthony Gray pulls up a jumper, and Gray scores! Timeout SDAK. Up 66-60, 0:59.

We got called for a foul. 1-and-1 for SDAK's Marvin Gresham, who is leading all scorers with 20 pts. Gresham hits both. Timeout. Up 66-62, 0:53.

This time, SDAK called for a foul. 1-and-1 for SG James Davis. Davis hits both. Timeout SDAK. Up 68-62, 0:48.

SDAK missed a jumper. Scramble for the loose ball. Last touch SDAK says the refs. I called a timeout. Up 68-62, 0:37.

We'll slow down. But SDAK fouled immediately. SG James Davis goes to the line again. Davis calmly sinks both. Timeout SDAK. Up 70-62, 0:35.

It's a 3 possession game now. As long as we don't commit a monumental collapse, we should hold on. We converted 4 more FTs to counter a FG by SDAK. This was a close one.

Game #68 - 2002 NCAA Tournament Round 2

Postby randy » Fri Jan 24, 2014 5:44 am

Mar 19, 2002: (6) #23 Davidson (25-6, 14-2) vs (3) #10 UCLA (27-6, 12-6)

Scouting Report
  1. Primary defense: 1-2-2 zone
  2. Offense focus: Balanced (slow)
  3. Key players:
    • Sr SG Ben Davis (17.1 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 41% 3PT, 3-time All Conf)
  4. Strengths:
    • Shooting: 48.3% FG (#8), 41.7% 3PT (#3)
    • Rebounding: 33.5 rpg (#48)
  5. Weaknesses:
    • Ball handling:14.7 topg (#213)
    • Perimeter defense: 35.8% 3PT (#242), 12.9 opp topg (#302)
  6. How they got here:
    • Finished 1st Southern; Won Conference Tournament
Strategies
  1. We face another good shooting team, and they are better then our last opponent (South Dakota). We need to generate turn overs, similar to what we did with South Dakota
  2. We'll try to go inside early (favor inside) and test their interior defense

Start of 1st half

DAV's Ben Davis scored 8 of their 10 pts. Tied at 10, 13:16. DAV getting good production from their other players, even while Davis is resting. Down 19-21, 6:46. DAV beginning to miss their shots, and were able to convert only 1 FG in the last 7 mins of the 1st half. Halftime, Up 33-27.

Key stats / Notes (Halftime)
  • Turnovers: DAV 9, UCLA 5
  • Off rebounds: DAV 2, UCLA 5
  • Those small differences in rebounds and turn overs resulted in a +11 FG attempts advantage for us.

Start of 2nd half

It has been a shootout between the two Davis' so far. SG James Davis with 21 pts (7 3s), while DAV's SG Ben Davis has 16 pts (4 3s). Up 53-43, 11:29. We get the lead up to 13. DAV scored 6 straight pts to cut our lead to 7. And then we scored 5 unanswered. Up 61-49, 7:22.

We were mostly going inside, while SG James Davis is resting on the bench. Scoring has slowed down for both teams, but we still managed to extend our lead to 15. Up 66-51, 3:12. We'll slow things down. DAV on a mini 5-0 run, but their rally was quickly doused by a FG from SG James Davis, with just over a minute left. No one scored since then; DAV's leading scorer SG Ben Davis didn't even get a shot in the last 3 mins

On to the Sweet 16 for the 2nd straight year!

Game #69 - 2002 NCAA Tournament Regional Semi Finals (Sweet 16)

Postby randy » Fri Jan 24, 2014 11:04 am

Mar 24, 2002: (3) #10 UCLA (28-6, 12-6) vs (2) #21 Purdue (22-9, 12-6)

Scouting Report
  1. Primary defense: 3-2 zone
  2. Offense focus: Balanced
  3. Key players:
    • Fr PF Loren McIntosh (11.2 ppg, 6.5 rpg)
    • Jr SF Aaron Higgins (10.0 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 52% FG
    • Fr(R) PG Chris Haginas (10.6 ppg, 4.7 apg)
  4. Strengths:
    • Rebounding: 34.7 rpg (#30)
    • Ball handling: 12.8 topg (#34)
  5. Weaknesses:
    • FG shooting: 43.3% FG (#225)
  6. How they got here:
    • Finished 4th Big 10; Lost Conference Tournament Semi Finals
    • (Round 1) Def Yale, 68-48 (PUR: 8 tos)
    • (Round 2) Def Cincinnati, 63-57 (PUR: 8 tos)
Strategies
  1. Purdue's has minimized their turn overs on the 2 NCAA tournament matches they played so far, and their opponents have only managed to score 10 fast break pts per game. We need to get more fast break pts against Purdue
  2. We'll go with a balanced offense, to counter Purdue's 3-2 zone. Our outside shots need to fall today.

Start of 1st half

SG James Davis has converted 2 3pt shots already, and C Troy Jones able to convert 3 FGs on low post plays. We have 3 blocks already on defense, and PUR is 0-8 FG. Fouls seem to be a trouble for us though, as both Jones and PF Jason White each with 2 fouls. Up 12-2, 13:51.

We got into penalty early, at the 11:53 mark. PUR able to get close to within 4 pts, but SG James Davis 3rd triple of the game extended our lead to 7. Our main issue on the game is our turn overs, now at 6 already. Up 21-14, 7:11.

PUR continues to inch their way closer by shooting FTs as fouls are piling on us; PG Jacob Hawkins with 3. C Troy Jones added another inside basket, while SF Jonathan Gray gets his 1st FG of the game after missing his 1st 4 attempts. PUR had troubles on their offense towards the end of the 1st half, starting to commit turn overs, and continue to miss their outside shots. Meanwhile on the other end, SG James Davis got his 4th 3pt shot of the game, PG Sam Beck scored his 1st 2 pts, and FTs by C Troy Jones capped a good scoring run for us to end the 1st half. Halftime, Up 35-23.

Key stats / Notes (Halftime)
  • 3PT shooting: UCLA 4-6 (all from SG James Davis), PUR 0-6
  • Turnovers: UCLA 9, PUR 7
  • We need to keep our key players in the floor most of the time and out of foul trouble, as our bench have contributed just 8 pts so far.

Start of 2nd half

Except for a 3pt shot by SF Anthony Gray, we're not shooting well at the start of the 2nd half, and PUR starting to inch closer once again. Up 38-30, 15:32. Gray added another 3, and he's the only one who has scored for us. But Gray picked up his 3rd foul, and has to sit. Crucial moment for our bench now, as they have to step up. PG Jacob Hawkins with 4 fouls, and has to sit as well. 6 team fouls for us now, and I keep calling the attention of the refs. Penalty now. SF Abdul Pebbles hits a jumper to momentarily break the uprising of PUR and we lead by 8, but PUR answers back with only their 2nd 3 of the game. Up 43-38, 10:51.

Backup PG Sam Beck has played horribly today with 7 tos. With starting PG Jacob Hawkins still on the bench with 4 fouls, I rolled the dice and call on walk on PG Jarni Bickerstaf. After both teams exchanged a FG, PUR scored 4 more FTs and 2 fast break baskets as a result of our turn overs again. Down 45-48, 7:29.

I have no choice now, but to bring in the rest of my starting lineup on the floor, before its too late; they will have to stay and finish the game, tired or not. After a couple of plays, PG Jacob Hawkins fouled out. 2 more FTs scored by PUR; PUR is now +14 in FT attempts. Down 5. Our walk on PG committed just his 2nd turn over. I will now try freshman SG Steve Bradford to play the point. SF Anthony Gray, who has been struggling offensively in this game, gets a needed basket. We're still in this. Down 47-50, 6:17.

After we made 3 defensive stops, SG James Davis what could have been a game tying 3, but he missed. PUR scored on the return play. Down 5. C Troy Jones gets fouled while attempting a shot; Jones missed both FTs. PUR missed. On our next play, Davis missed another 3. But Davis gets a steal on the defensive end, and the outlet to Jones is good. Down 3. We get another steal, this time by SG Steve Bradford. We set up a play for Jones on the low post, and Jones scores again. Down 51-52, 3:00.

PUR's C Ryan Marshack shoots an 18-foot jumper. Ryan Marshack's shot hits the iron, bounces up and in! Down 51-54, 2:43.

SG James Davis called for traveling. It's our 19th turn over of the game. PUR throws the ball away on their possession; that was PUR's 16 th turn over. I called a timeout. Down 51-54, 2:22.

SG Steve Bradford safely getting ball to PF Jason White on the low post. White able to score! Down 53-54, 2:08.

PUR missed a jumper from the left corner. PUR gets the off rebound. PUR's C Alex Lucas receives the pass. Lucas is looking to make a pass. Lucas' pass sails out of bounds; turn over #17 for PUR. Timeout. Down 53-54, 1:44.

SG James Davis advances the ball past midcourt. Davis looks for an open man. PF Jason White gets the pass. White puts it on the floor, drives, difficult shot, but White able to rattle one home! What a sensational shot by White. Up 55-54, 1:31.

PUR's SF Aaron Higgins gets the pass at the right corner. Higgins puts up a jumper, and Higgins scores! Timeout. Down 55-56, 1:11.

SF Anthony Gray has the ball. Gray drives to the basket, puts up a shot, missed! PUR gets the rebound,. Plenty of time left, 0:58. PUR puts up a shot. They miss also. We get the def rebound. I call my last timeout. Down 55-56, 0:49.

We'll go for a 2-for1. SF Anthony Gray puts up a quick 3. Missed. PUR with the rebound. 0:39 left, no need to foul. PUR's SF Aaron Higgins scores a clutch basket again; Higgins has scored PUR's last 4 pts. We have no more timeouts. Down 55-58, 0:30.

No need to put up a 3 yet, unless we get an open look. We can't get a good shot. SF Anthony Gray forces a difficult shot; missed. Rebounded by PUR. We have no choice but to foul. PUR able to make 2 FTs. Down 55-60, 0:11. We missed our final attempt at 3. Season ended

Notes
  • We were the season's highest scoring team in the nation, but we could only muster 20 pts in the 2nd half of this game. We accomplished what we wanted on defense (despite all the fouls called on us), but it was our inability to handle the ball that turned this game around.
  • Still a good season. Looking forward to next year, as we will bring in arguably the best recruiting class this program has seen

2002 Team Stats and Rankings

Postby randy » Fri Jan 24, 2014 11:52 am

Legend (National Rank), +/- from last season

Summary
  1. We are the best offensive team in the country, both in pts scored and efficiency. Part of the slight increase in our FG% is because we haven less 3pt shots this season as compared to last season. We also made great improvements in out FT shooting.
  2. We had a freshman starting PG, which explains the increase in turn overs. But overall, we're one of the best in the country in taking care of the ball.
  3. Slightly better rebounding numbers this season, mainly on the offensive boards.
  4. Even though we still make it harder for our opponents to shoot, the number of pts allowed increased significantly. Main reason is the number of turn overs that we are forcing our opponents to commit had dipped down as compared to last season.
  5. The improvement in shot blocks is due mainly to C Troy Jones.
