We're the #2 Top Recruiting Class (behind Georgia Tech). Arizona is #3, Stanford #7, and Oregon #11. Exciting season for the Pac 12.

Game #70 - Start of 2002-03 Season / Preseason NIT Round 1

Postby randy » Fri Jan 24, 2014 2:36 pm

Nov 14, 2002: (12) Houston (0-0) vs (5) #2 UCLA (0-0)

For this season, we'll shift our offensive focus to favor inside, in order to take advantage of our strength up front. And indeed, we took advantage of our size, as the 4/5 rotation trio of C Dermek Daniel, PF Andre Eschmeyer, and C Troy Jones combined for 32 of our 37 pts. Daniel is living up to his hype so far, already with a double double in the 1st half, 15 pts, 13 rebs. Halftime, Up 37-20.

HOU never broke our double digit lead in the entire 2nd half. A combined total of 49 fouls were called, so both teams had to spend a lot of time in the line of today. But story of the day belongs to C Dermek Daniel, who had an explosive debut.

Game #71 - 2002 Preseason NIT Quarter Finals

Postby randy » Fri Jan 24, 2014 3:16 pm

Nov 16, 2002: (5) #2 UCLA (1-0) vs (4) #9 Duke (1-0)

Similar to the 1st game, we have not shot well from the outside. Turnovers (8) remain a problem for this freshman-laden team, but hopefully that will improve as the season goes along. We played good enough defense to maintain a lead at the break; DUKE shooting only 38% FG and committing 12 turn overs. Halftime, Up 33-30. Our starting PG, SG, and SF were all scoreless.

Forcing more turn overs, plus feasting on the offensive glass, were enough to give us a 10-0 run to start the 2nd half. DUKE already with 17 turn overs so far. Up 43-30, 16:05. If this was last season, our poor shooting performance in the past 2 games might have put us in an 0-2 record. But the team's commitment on defense and rebounding has given us another comfortable win. C Dermek Daniel had another monster game, and the scary things is, he still has plenty of room for improvement.

Final Score: UCLA - 73, Duke - 49

Game #72 - 2002 Preseason NIT Semi Finals

Postby randy » Fri Jan 24, 2014 3:55 pm

Nov 18, 2002: (5) #2 UCLA (2-0) vs (1) #4 Georgia (2-0)

Went down early, 10-20, as our perimeter players having all sorts of trouble handling the ball. Our big men leading the way again, to put us back into the game. But our turn overs (10) continued to haunt us, and we were trailing GA the entire 1st half. Halftime, Down 28-29.

It's our turn to force GA into some turn overs. Our continuous pounding inside the paint netted us several pts from the FT line, helping us build a 9 pt lead. Up 43-34, 12:00. C Dermek Daniel starting to dominate the offensive glass, giving him his usual double double. GA still not out of this game though, as they are shooting well from the outside, 6-11 3PT so far. Up 57-46, 7:39. GA never got to trim our lead below 9 pts the rest of the game. GA's front court simply can't match with our big men.

Final Score: UCLA - 75, Georgia - 59

Gme #73 - 2002 Preseason NIT Finals

Postby randy » Fri Jan 24, 2014 4:45 pm

Nov 20, 2002: (3) #6 Iowa (3-0) vs (5) #2 UCLA (3-0)

Score was 24-1 before IOWA scored their 1st FG. A blow out right from the start. C Dermek Daniel had a relatively "quiet" 1st half with 11 pts, but our outside shooting finally showing up for the 1st time this season. SG Travis Reed providing a glimpse of what he can bring to this team with 15 pts, 3-3 3PT. We had 11 blocks in the 1st half! Halftime, Up 47-26.

IOWA cut our lead to as low as 14, but they had another offensive slump in the latter part of the 2nd half. We ended up with 16 blocks. We're still playing up tempo offense, and if we can hit our outside shots, we can still pile up the points like what we have done the past 2 seasons.

Final Score: Iowa - 66, UCLA - 90

Game #74

Postby randy » Fri Jan 24, 2014 5:20 pm

Nov 22, 2002: #3 LSU (5-0) @ #2 UCLA (4-0)

First home game of the season, and we didn't disappoint our fans right from the opening buzzer. We started 13-1; and then it was 27-6. C Dermek Daniel already in double figures in less than 7 minutes. We were harassing LSU, forcing them to commit 14 turn overs, and we were running on the break. Halftime, Up 47-22.

No we didn't shot the lights out, but overall, this was the best game we've played this season so far. Offensively, we had balanced scoring; and the defense was consistent the entire game.

Game #75

Postby randy » Fri Jan 24, 2014 7:31 pm

Nov 25, 2002: #10 Southern Illinois (3-1) @ #2 UCLA (5-0)

Cold outside shooting, and our offense slowed down against SILL's 2-3 zone. Still, we played good defense by forcing SILL to commit 14 turn overs which is why we're in the lead. Halftime, Up 27-19.

We'll go with a more balanced offense in the 2nd half. SILL stayed around within 13 pts of our lead the 1st 10 mins of the 2nd half, but they never really threatened to rally because of their low FG%. Our lead still increased later on, despite the relatively slower pace of today's game.
