Postby randy » Tue Jan 21, 2014 4:53 am

Feb 22, 2001: #4 UCLA (25-2, 14-2) @ Utah (17-8, 9-7)

Our bench played longer than usual in the 1st half, but our defense was still as tight as it could be. UTAH shot just 30% FG, and committed 15 turn overs in the 1st half. Halftime, Up 46-23.

Every one played today, including our 2 walk ons who saw action for the 1st time this season.

Game #29

Postby randy » Tue Jan 21, 2014 7:01 am

Feb 25, 2001: #4 UCLA (26-2, 15-2) @ Oregon St (11-17, 6-11)

ORST shooting well, including 4 3PT shots, and the game was tied at 32 with 3 mins left. And then, PG Mac Jefferson and SG James Davis drained 2 triples each, as part of our closing 14-2 run to end the 1st half. Halftime, Up 46-34.

No signs of a rally from ORST as we're leading by 17 with 10 mins left. The bench finished this game. Every one got to see some action again.

Game #30 - 2001 Pac 12 Tournament Quarter Finals

Postby randy » Tue Jan 21, 2014 7:54 am

Mar 10, 2001: (8) Oregon St (12-18, 6-12) vs #3 UCLA (27-2, 16-2)

Not a good start offensive, 1-7 FG, and we're down 2-9. Our offense settled down when SG James Davis entered the game, and we took the lead 16-14. We extended the lead to 29-18, as our 3pt shots begin to fall. Both teams in the penalty late in the game, but we only shot 5-10 FT in the 1st half. Halftime, Up 34-28.

Our defense stepping up further, as we go on a 13-0 run to start the 2nd half. Up 47-28, 15:28. Our 2nd unit was able to protect the lead. Up 66-47, 7:35. I decided to let my 2nd unit stay on the floor, so my starters gets an early rest.

Game #31 - 2001 Pac 12 Tournament Semi Finals

Postby randy » Tue Jan 21, 2014 8:40 am

Mar 11, 2001: (4) Arizona (17-12, 11-7) vs (1) #3 UCLA (28-2, 16-2)

ARIZ is putting to good use their rebounding advantage, and our early 13-4 lead easily erased. We found our touch from long range, and we finished teh 1st half 8-16 3PT. Halftime, Up 37-28.

ARIZ has kept themselves close; they eventually took the lead on 2 FTs, as we got ourselves into penalty. Worse, both our starting men with 4 fouls. Down 47-48, 10:08. We just need to keep close, until our starters can return to the floor. Down 51-53, 6:24.

A miss by ARIZ. On our play, ARIZ's C BJ Cooper came away with 2 blks; Cooper (12 pts, 15 rebs, 4 blks) has been a thorn for us in this game. ARIZ turns the ball over. Score unchanged. Down 51-53, 5:36.

We miss a 3. We get the ball back after we get a steal, and came away with an easy 2. Tied at 53, 5:04. Another miss by ARIZ. This time, we threw the ball away on a bad pass, and ARIZ scores on the break. Down 53-55, 4:32.

Another bad pass on our end. ARIZ also threw the ball away. C Try Jones gets the ball on the post. Another block by ARIZ's C BJ Cooper! ARIZ gets the ball back and they score on a jumper. Down 53-57, 3:30. Missed jumper by SF Anthony Gray. We get the off rebound. A 3 by PG Mac Jefferson also missed. ARIZ secures the ball. Down 53-57, 2:55.

Another turn over for ARIZ. Another block by ARIZ's C BJ Cooper (6 blks in the game so far). ARIZ with the ball. We get a steal, and scored again on the fast break. Down 55-57, 2:11. Cooper gets the ball on ARIZ's offense. Cooper is a bit far from teh basket. Cooper puts up a jumper over a double team, and scores! Timeout. Down 55-59, 1:40.

We need to go heavy outside, as we can't get anything inside the paint. SG James Davis puts up and 3 and its in! Down 58-59, 1:30. We we called for a foul. 1-and-1 for ARIZ. They hit both. Timeout. Down 58-61, 1:20.

We missed a 3. ARIZ gets the ball. We dont need to foul yet. ARIZ uses up most of their shot clock. They missed their shot. But they get the off rebound. We were late in fouling. They shot 2 FTs. Timeout. Down 58-63, 0:19. We need to shoot 3s.

We put in a small lineup. ARIZ playing good defense. We finally put up a shot. Missed. Game over. ARIZ's C BJ Cooper was outstanding today, 14 pts, 18 rebs, 6 blks

We may have lost the chance to get a (1) seed in the NCAA tournament because of this loss

Game #32 - 2001 NCAA Tournament Round 1

Postby randy » Tue Jan 21, 2014 11:24 am

C Loren Eisley still injured (75%, 7 days); won't play

Mar 16, 2001: (15) Mount St. Mary (19-11, 9-5) vs (2) #6 UCLA (28-3, 16-2)

Scouting Report
  1. Primary defense: M2M
  2. Offense focus: Outside
  3. Key players:
    • So SF Neil Stone (14.9 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 44% 3PT, All-Conf)
    • Sr G/F Reggie Gunn (12.8 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 44% 3PT, All-Conf)
  4. Strengths:
    • Scoring: 69.9 ppg (#74)
    • Ball handling: 13.3. topg (#77)
  5. Weaknesses:
    • Shooting pct: 43.6% FG (#193), 34.3% 3PT (#190)
    • Rebounding: 30.6 rpg (#198)
  6. How they got here:
    • Finished 2nd NEC; Won Conference Tournament
Strategies
  1. Just play our brand of harassing defense, and force them to commit turn overs

Start of 1st half

A rather shaky start. We missed our 1st 5 shots from downtown, but made our last 2. We're playing good defense, limiting MOUNT to 33% FG, and forcing 4 turn overs already. But we have given up 4 off rebounds to MOUNT already. Up 10-8, 12:54. We hit 3 more triples, and 4 successful low post plays. But MOUNT is making their shots as well, as our defense is not as effective as it was earlier in the game. Up 28-21, 7:30. MOUNT can't connect from 3, but had converted on several drive plays. The difference on 3PT shooting is the story of the game so far. Halftime, Up 41-29.

Key stats / Notes (Halftime)
  • 3PT shooting: MOUNT 0-7, UCLA 6-13
  • Rebounds: MOUNT 21, UCLA 13
  • We need to do a better job in rebounding if we want to put MOUNT away for good. And make those FTs; we're 5-13 FT in the 1st half

Start of 2nd half

MOUNT, who went 0-7 3PT in the 1st half, has converted 4-7 3PT in less than 7 mins of the 2nd half. They have cut our halftime lead in half. Up 52-46, 13:37. After C Troy Jones converted a 3pt lead opportunity that increased our lead to 9, MOUNT came back back strong with a 6-0 run, and our lead cut to 3. On MOUNT's next posession, they hit their 5th 3 of the game and we are tied! We have a tight game here in our hands. I called an early timeout. Tied at 55, 9:45.

I am not happy during the huddle, as our defense has given up 26 pts in just over 10 mins of play in the 2nd half (MOUNT scored just 29 ots the entire 1st half). PG Mac Jefferson hit a 3 after our timeout. Up 3. But MOUNT answered back with another 3. Tied again. We miss a 3. MOUNT got 3 consecutive off rebounds on the next play; fortunately they missed every shot, but I'm very worried on our performance so far. We miss another 3; we're 1-8 3PT in the 2nd half. MOUNT comes back and hits a 3, and they take the lead since 4-2 very early in the game. Down 58-61, 8:03.

I signaled to the team that we'll go favor inside. C Lee Maloney got fouled inside; Maloney hits 2 FTs. Down 1. C Troy Jones got a block, and we get the ball. Jones powers his way inside, but missed the shot. MOUNT missed a contested jumper against a double team. We get the rebound. We can't get the ball inside. PG Mac Jefferson attempts a 3, and nails it! Up 63-61, 6:22.

PG Mac Jefferson gets a steal on the other end. SF Wayne Dryden shots a 3; missed. But Jefferson gets the off rebound. Jefferson got fouled while shooting. Jefferson hits both FTs; MOUNT in penalty. Up 65-61, 5:49.

We get another block and gets the ball. SG James Davis, who just checked back in earlier, connects on his 4th 3pt shot of the game. We're on a 10-0 run, after getting down by 3 almost 5 mins ago. Up 68-61, 5:24.

We got called for 2 fouls, and we're in the penalty also. MOUNT hits both FTs. Up 5. MOUNT called for a foul as well. PG Mac Jefferson again hitting his FTs. Up 7. And we get called for a foul. MOUNT missed the front end of their 1-and-1. SF Anthony Gray shoots a 3 from top of they key. BANG! Up 73-63, 4:09.

But this game not yet over, as MOUNT also hitting a 3, their 8th of the game (all in the 2nd half). Up 7. PG Mac Jefferson trying to answer back; Jefferson hits a 3 from deep left corner. Up 76-66, 3:37.

We get a steal. But we're called for traveling. We're playing very tight defense, and MOUNT can't get a shot. And then the refs called a hand check foul on C Troy Jones. I was mad at the call; it's Jones' 5th foul. With C Loren Eisley out on an injury, we're suddenly very thin in the front court. MOUNT missed their front end again, but they get the off rebound and the put back is good. Timeout. Up 76-68, 2:39.

We miss a 3. MOUNT with the ball. We're playing good defense again. MOUNT with only 1 sec on the shot clock. They put up a contested 3. The shot is good! My goodness. Up 76-71, 1:47.

We go to SF Anthony Gray. Gray with a strong drive to the basket. The basket counts plus a foul! Gray hits the bonus FT. Up 79-71, 1:33.

MOUNT taking a long time again to find a good shot. And they turned it over. I call another timeout. We'll have to slow things down now. Up 79-71, 1:09.

MOUNT electing to foul intentionally now. We were able to hit 6 more FTs, plus another 3 at the end, while MOUNT had 4 unsuccessful quick offensive possessions.

Game #33 - 2001 NCAA Tournament Round 2

Postby randy » Tue Jan 21, 2014 1:18 pm

  • C Loren Eisley still injured (78%, 5 days); won't play
  • 5 Pac 12 teams (UCLA, Arizona, Stanford, Utah, Oregon) are still playing in Round 2

Mar 18, 2001: (10) Providence (16-13, 8-8) vs (2) #6 UCLA (29-3, 16-2)

Scouting Report
  1. Primary defense: M2M
  2. Offense focus: Balanced (slow)
  3. Key players:
    • Jr PG Marty Ward (11.3 ppg, 52% 3PT)
    • Fr C Sam Seabrooks (11.5 ppg, 5.0 rpg); Seabrooks stands 7-2
  4. Strengths:
    • Perimeter defense: 30.1% opp 3PT (#11)
    • FT shooting: 78.3% FT (#16)
    • Ball handling: 12.9 topg (#37)
  5. Weaknesses:
    • Offense: 63.7 ppg (#268), 42.8% FG (#255), 31.1% 3PT (#307)
    • Rebounding: 28.9 rpg (#299)
  6. How they got here:
    • Finished 8th Big East; Lost Conference Tournament Round 1
Strategies
  1. We must be able to play more our low post offense in case Providence is effective in defending our outside shots

Start of 1st half

5 of our 1st 6 FGs were from low post plays. We also hit 2 3pt shots, to give a good balance on our offensive production. Up 18-7, 12:55. We missed our last 5 attempts from 3; we'll go favor inside now, as we seem to have more consistency on low post plays. Up 22-12, 7:41. The players have worked very hard on rebounding, esp on the off boards, helping us get a huge advantage in number of FG attempts. Halftime, Up 34-22.

Key stats / Notes (Halftime)
  • Turn overs: PROV 12, UCLA 3
  • Off rebounds: PROV 7, UCLA 11
  • Both teams shot less than 30% FG, so our +13 differential advantage in FG attempts became very significant. We need to continue this level of intensity in rebounding and defense. We'll continue going favor inside, as we only hit 2-13 3PT in the 1st half (PROV is 1-6 3PT)

Start of 2nd half

We continued to do the things that worked well in the 1st half, giong mostly inside, pounding the off glass, and forcing a lot of turn overs; PROV already has 18 turn overs. The last 3pt shot of SG James Davis put us ahead by 18. Up 49-31, 12:34. Davis heated as he added 2 more triples, as we maintain our comfortable lead. Up 59-40, 7:59.

More turn overs by PROV, and inside incursions on our offense, not giving any room for a possible rally from PROV. We're on our way to the Sweet 16!

Final Score: Providence - 54, UCLA - 81

Notes
  • We're way off on our shooting, but our hustle and effort in off rebounding and forcing turn overs allowed us to score a lot of "extra" points

Game #34 - 2001 NCAA Tournament Regional Semi Finals (Sweet 16)

Postby randy » Tue Jan 21, 2014 4:10 pm

  • 3 Pac 12 teams (UCLA, Arizona, Oregon) in to the Sweet 16

Mar 18, 2001: (3) #15 Kentucky (24-7, 13-3) vs (2) #6 UCLA (30-3, 16-2)

Scouting Report
  1. Primary defense: M2M
  2. Offense focus: Inside (slow)
  3. Key players:
    • Fr SG Richard Walls (21.2 ppg, 42% 3PT, #46 class rank)
    • Sr C Jean Hollins (9.3 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 2.0 bpg, 51% FG, #25 class rank)
  4. Strengths:
    • Defense: 57.7 opp ppg (#9), 40.3% opp FG (#33)
    • Slow but efficient offense: 46.4% FG (#37), 65.6 (#8 slowest)
  5. Weaknesses:
    • Rebounding: 31.2 rpg (#152)
  6. How they got here:
    • Finished 2nd SEC; Lost Conference Tournament Quarter Finals
Strategies
  1. Play up tempo. Play single coverage, m2m defense, except on Walls whom we shall double

Start of 1st half

We're shooting 4-12 FG, but all those 4 FGs were from beyond the arc. Up 17-14, 11:58. We're 6-9 3PT, and leading by 9 earlier. But UK scored on a 10-0 run , before we finally scored again. Up 27-26, 5:23. Teams alternate a series of runs; UK went up to lead by 4, and then we made strong surge to lead by 3. UK clearly showing that they can play fast, and adapt in a high-scoring game. Halftime, Up 42-41.

Key stats / Notes (Halftime)
  • FG shooting: UK 60%, UCLA 42%
  • 3PT shooting: UK 4-11, UCLA 9-14
  • We started double teaming anyone who has the ball midway into the 1st half, and will continue to do so. 5 UK players scored 6 pts or more, so they definitely are not just relying on SG Richard Walls

Start of 2nd half

Our big men scoring all of our 11 2nd half pts so far. But we have not been able to stop UK drive plays lately, and they have now taken control of this game. We'll adjust to 2-3 zone. Down 53-57, 13:11.

The defensive adjustment didn;t worked out initially, as UK was able to hit some outside shots (including 2 triples) to counter our zone. Down 60-66, 9:43. SG Mac Jefferson answered back with a 3. Down 3. A miss by UK. We scored on an offensive rebound put back. Down 65-66, 8:58.

Teams trading two misses each. UK's SG Richard Walls able to get away from his defender, but called for too many steps. We go down low to C Loren Eisley, and Eisley scores. We reclaim the lead. UK missed an open 3. On our play, SF Anthony Gray drives, pulled up for a jumper, and Gray scores. Up 69-66, 6:44.

UK forces a pass inside. We steal the ball. C Loren Eisley again down low. Eisley got fouled; 2 FTs. Eisley gets both FTs to fall. Up 5. Another missed 3 by UK. We secured the rebound. We go back to Eisley on the low post. Eisley shoots, missed, but Eisley gets the off rebound. 2nd serving by Eisley is good! We are now on a 13-0 run. Up 73-66, 5:45.

UK's Richard Walls (18 pts) finally gets his jumper to fall. Up 5. We go back to C Leron Eisley. Eisley missed, but we get another off rebound, this time by C Lee Maloney, and Maloney got fouled; 2 FTs. Maloney splits his FTs. Up 74-68, 5:11.

UK missed their shot. We turned the ball over and UK scored on the break. Up 4. SG James Davis fires away a 3; Davis missed it. UK with the ball. UK connects on a long jumper. Up 2. SF Anthony Gray missed a jumper. UK with a chance to tie or take the lead. UK called for traveling. Up 74-72, 3:24.

C Troy Jones gets the ball on the low post. Jones shot was swatted away. UK recovers the ball. UK missed a shot from top of the key. We get the rebound. Timeout. Up 74-72, 2:41.

SF Anthony Gray missed a 3. Off rebound by C Loren Eisley, but UK comes away with another block. UK with the ball. Another miss by UK. I elected not to call a timeout. Turns out it was a bad decision as UK comes up with a steal and scores another transition FG! Now I call a timeout. Tied at 74, 1:45.

We miss another 3. Our shots not falling, and we are in a scoring drought for almost 4 mins now. We go called for a foul; our 6th team foul. UK missed their jumpshot. Offensive rebound put back by UK is also off the mark. We finally get the off rebound. Timeout. Tied at 74, 0:53.

We'll adjust to favor inside. But UK gets another steal. UK reduced to a jump shooting team because of our zone. UK missed a hurried shot. I call my last timeout. Tied at 74, 0:40.

We need a good execution. SF Anthony Gray gets the ball frm the outside. Gray drives strong, and gets fouled on the act of shooting. 2 pressure FTs for Gray. Gray missed the 1st. Gray gets the 2nd to fall. Timeout UK. Up 75-74, 0:35.

Big decision to make. Do we continue with the zone, or go m2m? We'll roll the dice and go m2m, hoping UK will take some time before they can get a shot.

A foul is called. I was complaining, but I can't do anything about it now. UK's SF Brian Shehan to take 1-and-1. This is Shehan's 1st trip to the line today. Shehan makes the 1st; and also the 2nd. We have no more timeouts. Down 75-76, 0:24.

I put in SG James Davis on the floor. PG Mac Jefferson puts up a 3. Jefferson missed. I yell that we should foul now. We did give up a foul. Another 1-and-1, this time for UK's PG Lamont Gregory. Gregory is 3-4 FT today. Gregory makes both. Down 75-78, 0:11.

We definitely have to go for 3. Season on the line. UK wisely presses to kill some clock. We get across the timeline. 3 secs to shoot. PG Mac Jefferson attempts another 3. Miss. Season ended!
