Game #18

Postby randy » Mon Jan 20, 2014 12:00 pm

Jan 18, 2001: #6 UCLA (16-1, 5-1) @ Oregon St (8-9, 3-3)

Both teams shooting below 40% FG. Both teams also got into penalty, but we missed 7 FT shots already, while ORST is perfect at 12-12. More concerning though is our unusually high turnovers, already with 8 in the 1st half. Halftime, Down 29-33.

We're keeping the game close, but our poor FT shooting making it difficult to get over the hump. We finally reclaim the lead with a basket from C Troy Jones. Up 46-45, 11:04. Our defense has forced a string of turn overs for ORST, and we were able to build a 14 pt lead. Up 62-48, 5:03. ORST never got close after that.

Our defense is improving lately. In this game, we allowed ORST to score only 8 pts in the last 12 mins.

Game #19

Postby randy » Mon Jan 20, 2014 2:49 pm

Jan 21, 2001: #19 Stanford (13-3, 6-1) @ #6 UCLA (17-1, 6-1)

We race to an early 11-0 lead. We extend it to 20, as STAN not getting open looks in offense. Not only we shot well from the outside (7-12 3PT), we got plenty of inside pts (24 pts in the paint). Halftime, Up 57-27.

2nd half was a complete opposite of the 1st, as STAN slowed the pace down. Our early penalty in the 2nd half also contributed in dragging the speed of the game. Nevertheless, a good win against one of the best teams in the conference.

Game #20

Postby randy » Mon Jan 20, 2014 3:35 pm

Jan 25, 2001: #6 UCLA (18-1, 7-1) @ USC (5-12, 1-7)

Perhaps some signs of over confidence, as we were lax in defense allowing USC to get open looks. We found ourselves down 8-15. Bach-to-back 2pt shots by SG James Davis was part of an 8-0 that gave us the lead for the 1st time in this game. But USC's defense, and their FT shooting, kept this game close. Davis was the one playing good offense for us, as he hit 3 more triples in the last 4 mins of the game. But it was USC who connected on a buzzer beating 3 that gave them the lead heading to the 2nd half. Halftime, Down 31-34.

USC still outplaying us on most aspects of the game early in the 2nd half. Our deficit rose to 7. We started to buckle down on defense, and came away with a 9-0 run to reclaim the lead. Up 45-43, 11:36.

After USC tied the game, SG James Davis and PG Mac Jefferson both hit a 3, spearheading a 10-0 run. We controlled the game with our defense, until a crazy last minute. We were up by 9. USC hits a 3. Up 6. USC fouls. We miss the front end of our FTs. Timeout USC. Up 62-56, 0:28.

USC hits another 3! Up 62-59, 0:18. USC fouls again. We miss the front end again. USC calls a timeout. 0:10 left. USC takes another 3. They miss. But they get the off rebound. Their PF must have thought there is plenty of time left so he instead goes for the put back after getting the off rebound. They score a 2, but no more time left.

We escape a close one, helped by a rather questionable sequence of play by USC

Game #22

Postby randy » Mon Jan 20, 2014 11:25 pm

Feb 1, 2001: #6 UCLA (20-1, 9-1) @ Washington St (4-15, 3-7)

We go up 17-0, and it was a sign of things to come. We shot 13-20 3PT in the 1st half, and 6 different players ave converted at least 1 triple each. Halftime, Up 54-26.

The half time break cooled off our shooting, but we still managed to add 6 more 3pt shots in the 2nd half. WASHST had a good rally, cutting our lead to 17. But our next 14-0 run quickly doused off any little hope they had of a miracle comeback.

Postby randy » Tue Jan 21, 2014 12:22 am

Feb 4, 2001: Colorado (8-12, 5-6) @ #6 UCLA (21-1, 10-1)

PG Mac Jefferson is slightly injured (91%), but can play limited minutes.

Outstanding defense right from the opening tip, as COL started 0-12 FG, and ended up shooting just 18% FG in the 1st half. Halftime, Up 35-17.

COL found some their shooting touch, and able to chop off a good part of our lead. They came within 9 pts with just a little less than 4 mins remaining, 65-56. We put in the same kind of defense we showed in the 1st half, and COL did not score since then.

Feb 8, 2001: #5 UCLA (22-1, 11-1) @ Arizona St (10-11, 4-8)

We scored enough 3pt shots to keep ourselves in the lead (6-16 3PT), but AZST shot a decent 48% FG to keep themselves in the game. Halftime, Up 43-30.

C Troy Jones scored 8 pts and picked up 2 steals to start the 2nd half, helping us extend to a 26 pt lead, Up 58-32, 14:34. We maintained a safe distance, allowing our key players to get an early rest today.

Game #25

Postby randy » Tue Jan 21, 2014 2:07 am

Feb 11, 2001: #21 Oregon (15-8, 8-5) @ #5 UCLA (23-1, 12-1)

SG Matt Scott scored all of OR's points in an opening 10-0 run. We fought back, eventually getting the lead halfway in the 1st half, and we even extended our advantage to 5 pts. OR hit back-to-back lead to reclaim the lead, and it was a series of lead changes since then. We had 9 turn overs in the 1st half. Halftime, Tied at 30.

We're still tied at 36. We scored 2 straight baskets inside the paint to get a 4 pt lead. After an OR turn over, SG James Davis hits a 3pt shot. Prior to James' triple, we were only shooting 2-17 3PT. Up 43-36, 13:18.

SF Anthony Gray scored 2 FGs to extend our lead to 11. We got into penalty early, and the foul count clearly in OR's favor. We hit 4 more 3pt shots and several long jumpers, enough to counter OR's FT shooting, and we were able to hang on for the win.

Our outside shots will fall every time, but as long as we play consistent defense like today, we'll be able to hack out wins like this

Game #26

Postby randy » Tue Jan 21, 2014 2:48 am

Feb 15, 2001: #4 UCLA (24-1, 13-1) @ Arizona (14-10, 9-5)

Foul count again not in our favor (12-4), but to ARIZ's credit, they also shot the ball well, 57% FG. Halftime, Down 29-43. We'll go 2-3 zone in the 2nd half, as ARIZ is already +12 in pts on the paint

We tried to hang in with ARIZ, keeping ourselves down by just 10. We get a small breakthrough when SG James Davis back-to-back 3s, and our deficit is down to 4. Down 52-56, 8:31. But ARIZ is consistent with their jumpers all game, and able to get thier lead back up to 7. Down 59-66, 3:11.

A long jumper by SF Anthony Gray puts us within 5. After and ARIZ miss, SG James Davis hits a 3, and suddenly this is just a 2 pt game. Down 64-66, 2:34. Another miss by ARIZ. Davis puts up a 3, and he missed what could have been lead-changing shot. ARIZ scores on their end. Timeout. Down 64-68, 1:35.

SG James Davis missed another 3. ARIZ missed. Timeout. Down 64-68, 0:59.

We go inside. But ARIZ zone defense is too tough to crack. Kickout to PG Mac Jefferson who puts up a 3. Missed. We get the off rebound. 2nd shot by Jefefrson from 3, and he missed again. ARIZ with the rebound. 0:38 left. We have to foul, and shoot 3s when we get the ball back.

ARIZ gets a split. Down 5. PG Mac Jefferson with a 3, and this time he connected. Down 67-69, 0:19. We foul again. ARIZ makes both and it is now a 2 possession game now; too tough to turn this around now. We missed a 3, and that was it.

We got outplayed on most aspects of the game (out shot, out rebounded, out hustled in the paint), but we still gave ourselves a chance to win; our shots just didn't fall in the end.

We need just one more win to wrap up the Pac 12 regular season title

Feb 18, 2001: California (14-10, 9-6) @ #4 UCLA (24-2, 13-2)

Started out 6-6 FG, and ended up shooting 67% FG in the 1st half. Seldom used PG Brennen Weaver with 13 pts off the bench. Halftime, Up 53-29.

This game is a done deal. We were able to experiement on different lineups, and zone defenses. Our 4 seniors played were in the floor for the final 6 mins, on the final home game of their collegiate career
