Way to the top - a promotion dynasty

Game #12

Postby randy » Thu Feb 06, 2014 9:36 am

Jan 3, 1998: Cleveland St (4-8, 0-0) @ Sacramento St (6-5, 0-0)

1st Half
  • 13:16, Up 16-6. We're dong a good job controlling the boards, and keeping our foul count low.
  • 7:45, Tied at 21. We blew away a 10-pt lead when some of starters had to rest.
  • Halftime, Down 40-42. We rebuilt our lead to double digits, but once again, we gave it up when we committed at least 5 turn overs in the last 5 mins. It's as if we are giving away this game on a silver platter.

2nd Half
  • 15:47, Down 46-50. We added 4 more turn overs in less than 4 minutes into the 2nd half.
  • 11:15, Down 54-56. CLEV's FG shooting is a high 59%, because of the easy transition baskets they are getting from our turn overs. Both teams in penalty.
  • 7:16, Down 58-62.
  • 3:22, Down 66-67. We got the raw end of the deal in foul stuations, as starting PG Steve Hemsley fouled out already.

SG Morrow Tiggs hits a clutch 3. Up 2. CLEV capitalized on a 2nd chance opportunity shot. Tied. SF Lamoni Williams responds with a jumper from the left corner. Up 2. We got called for a foul. CLEV converts both. Tied. We missed a shot on the low post. CLEV rebounds. Walk on PG Nyah Celuck intercepts the ball, and Celuck goes all the way for an easy 2. Up 2. Another foul called on us. CLEV missed both FTs. I called a timeout. Up 73-71, 1:00.

SG Morrow Tiggs missed a 3. Timeout CLEV. Up 73-71, 0:49.

We get another steal, this time by SF Lamoni Williams. Williams outlet to SG Morrow Tiggs who scores on the break. Timeout CLEV. Up 75-71, 0:39.

CLEV missed a 3. I called a timeout. Up 75-71, 0:21.

We just need to slow down and keep possession of the ball. CLEV no choice but to give up a foul. PG Nyah Celuck connecting on both FTs, and we were able to hold on to our lead. Another turnover by CLEV sealed the game for us.

Some timely defensive stops in the end got us this hard-earned win.

Game #13

Postby randy » Thu Feb 06, 2014 11:31 am

Jan 6, 1998: Sacramento St (6-5, 1-0) @ Cal St Bakersfield (3-9, 0-1)

1st Half
  • 12:55, Up 16-6. We got away with some transition baskets, to give us a good start.
  • 7:50, Up 18-12. Our 2nd unit barely able to hang on to our lead, as BAK got close to within 4 pts earlier.
  • Halftime, Up 30-25. BAK able to get close with their FT shooting. But overall, we did a good job on defense as we limited BAK to 35% FG and forcing 10 turn overs.

2nd Half
  • 15:56, Up 32-29. Our foul trouble beginning to creep in, as 4 players already with 3 personals each.
  • 11:55, Down 36-37.
  • 7:50, Down 39-46. Nothing going right, as we're almost matching BAK's turn overs, plus we got into penalty early.
  • 2:48, Down 45-57.

We wasted an opportunity to get a road win, as we let our double-digit lead slipped away. Sub par performance from our guards today.

Game #14

Postby randy » Thu Feb 06, 2014 12:03 pm

Jan 10, 1998: Sacred Heart (10-3, 2-0) @ Sacramento St (7-6, 1-1)

1st Half
  • 13:55, Up 11-5. We have another good start defensively, but we need to sustain this level of intensity the entire game.
  • 7:25, Up 21-14.
  • Halftime, Up 36-26. Both teams almost identical in FG shooting, but SACRED had 11 turn overs giving us more possessions.

2nd Half
  • 15:42, Up 45-28.
  • 11:53, Up 46-33.
  • 7:56, Up 53-37. Not a good game to watch from an offense stand point, but our defense holding on so far.
  • 3:17, Up 65-54. SACRED had a furious scoring barrage in the last 4 mins. I reminded the team not to lose their focus on defense.

SACRED run out of time to mount a complete comeback, but we need to kick out the habit of easily giving up big leads.

Good to see a promotion/relegation dynasty.

Nice summary of the first 50 yrs.

What are the ratings for you and your assistant coaches?

What is Sac State's prestige level?

Game #15

Postby randy » Thu Feb 06, 2014 9:15 pm

Jan 13, 1998: Morehead St (6-8, 2-1) @ Sacramento St (8-6, 2-1)

1st Half
  • 12:36, Up 21-6. We're 5-7 3PT.
  • 7:27, Up 32-7.
  • Halftime, Up 52-23. We shot 60% FG. I'm sure we can hang on to this lead.

2nd Half
  • 15:44, Up 60-29.
  • 11:45, Up 64-35.
  • 7:19, Up 68-40. Bench can play more minutes.
  • 3:42, Up 77-46.

Season-high in pts scored. Another aspect of the game that went well for us is that our 2 point guards combined for only 1 turn over.

Because of the long simulation period, and the number of players/coaches generated by the game, accessing the "Team History" already results in an exception error. Similarly, probably because of the constant movement of the conferences (promotion/relegation), the "Historical Standings" within "Almanac" also gives an exception error.

But not to worry, I just have to exit the game, restart, and be able to continue with the association :-)

Game #16

Postby randy » Fri Feb 07, 2014 2:56 am

Jan 17, 1998: Sacramento St (9-6, 3-1) @ Winston Salem St (3-12, 1-3)

1st Half
  • 13:22, Down 10-13. We have been out-rebounded so far.
  • 7:27, Up 23-19.
  • Halftime, Up 46-37. We dominate scoring in the paint, but a couple of our starters are in foul trouble. WSST shot 16-18 FT; this game is far from over.

2nd Half
  • 15:24, Up 54-41. We have reversed the trend on rebounding, and we've getting a lot of offensive rebounds now.
  • 11:51, Up 57-41
  • 6:23, Up 62-48. WSST got into penalty early, but we have missed 9 FTs already. Both teams with plenty of turn overs in the 2nd half, hence the dip in scoring.
  • 3:54, Up 65-52.

WSST went on a 8-0 run to pull to within 5, before C Mike Holiday hits a clutch basket. A miss by WSST, and they were called for a foul on our next offensive possession. SG Morriw Tiggs hits 2 FTs to get our lead back yup to 9. Up 69-60, 1:14. We'll slow down the game.

We finally get our 1st road win of the season.

Game #17

Postby randy » Fri Feb 07, 2014 7:50 am

Jan 20, 1998: Texas-Arlington (14-2, 4-1) @ Sacramento St (10-6, 4-1)

1st Half
  • 13:12, Up 14-8. We're doing good defensively, forcing 6 turn overs already on TXAR.
  • 7:52, Up 24-16. C Mike Holiday picked up his 3rd foul, so we're playing a small lineup.
  • Halftime, Up 42-33. We got pummeled on the inside, but we compensated with quick baskets in transition.

2nd Half
  • 15:01, Up 61-42. TXAR not able to match our torrid outside shooting, and fast break pts.
  • 11:33, Up 65-44.
  • 7:52, Up 75-53.
  • 3:39, Up 79-61.

We made enough defensive stops in the end, to prevent any big rallies from TXAR, even if 3 of our players fouled out. The offense generated from our defense was the key today.

Postby randy » Fri Feb 07, 2014 8:55 am

Jan 24, 1998: Sacramento St (11-6, 5-1) @ Stephen F Austin (7-10, 2-4)

1st Half
  • 13:32, Down 12-15. We're in the penalty very early; not happy about it, and I got a T.
  • 7:14, Down 25-32.
  • Halftime, Down 36-38. We were able to stay close, despite SFA having a +12 advantage in FTA; we were assessed for 15 fouls in the 1st half.

2nd Half
  • 14:25, Up 49-48. We are nearing penalty again. Our 53% FG keeping us in the game.
  • 11:44, Up 56-52. Penalty once again.
  • 7:46, Up 60-54.
  • 3:28, Up 65-61. We have 1 player who has fouled out, and 3 with 4 fouls each.

SF Lamoni Williams missed a 3; our shooting has gone cold lately. SFA turns it over. SG Morrow Tiggs missed a jumper. Williams gets a steal. On the ensuing offensive play, Tiggs able to hit on the drive. Up 6. SFA missed a 3. Timeout. Up 67-61, 1:38.

We turn it over. And SFA able to hit a 3. Not a very good sequence for us. Timeout. Up 67-64, 1:03.

SG Morrow Tiggs missed. Timeout SFA. Up 67-64, 0:49.

SFA missed a potential-tying 3. We secured the rebound. I called a timeout. Up 67-64, 0:29.

We need to slow down, and waste time. SFA had to give up fouls in order to go to penalty. PG Steve Hemsley to shoot 1-and-1. Hemsley hits both. Timeout SFA. Up 69-64, 0:27.

We got called for a foul. SFA splits. We get the ball down to our front court. I called my last timeout. Up 69-65, 0:14.

We just need to play smart basketball here. SFA fouls again. Hemsley again hitting 2 FTs. Up 6. That should do it. It was total team effort in hacing out this tough win. SFA had +19 in FTAs.
