Game #19

Postby randy » Fri Feb 07, 2014 10:36 am

Jan 27, 1998: Sacramento St (12-6, 6-1) @ Lafayette (6-12, 4-3)

1st Half
  • 12:53, Down 12-17. We let LAFAY shoot 57% FG.
  • 7:55, Down 19-22.
  • Halftime, Down 25-40. Not getting much on offense, at 29% FG.

2nd Half
  • 15:35, Down 34-43. We need to show more intensity on defense if we want to come back. And we did just that by coming up with a 9-0 run to start the 2nd half, before LAFAY hits their 1st FG.
  • 11:44, Down 41-50. Our 13 turn overs hampering our ability to make a longer run.
  • 6:48, Down 46-66.
  • 3:53, Down 50-68

Our fouls still a problem (30 fouls called on us today), but we got beaten in a lot of areas of the game, including turn overs and offensive rebounding.

Game #20

Postby randy » Fri Feb 07, 2014 11:04 am

Jan 31, 1998: Utah Valley (9-10, 4-4) @ Sacramento St (12-7, 6-2)

1st Half
  • 12:48, Down 14-15. Not pleased with the defense again; UVU shooting 50% FG.
  • 6:02, Up 30-24. Our 4-7 3PT shooting got us ahead.
  • Halftime, Down 32-33. We went almost 6 minutes without scoring.

2nd Half
  • 15:59, Up 43-40.
  • 11:36, Up 55-49. Both teams has shot well from beyond the arc, but the difference so far is UVU's 18 turn overs.
  • 7:49, Up 61-55. We got called for 5 straight fouls in a single possession, getting us to penalty. I got called for a T.
  • 3:33, Up 73-59.

Converting 14 3pt shots certainly helped in today's win. And once again, our deficiencies in rebounds was offset by the number of turn overs forced against UVU.

Game #21

Postby randy » Fri Feb 07, 2014 1:52 pm

Feb 3, 1998: Sacramento St (13-7, 7-2) @ Howard (10-10, 5-4)

1st Half
  • 13:24, Tied at 14.
  • 7:56, Down 22-24. HOW is shooting 77% FG. We need to increase intensity on defense.
  • Halftime, Down 33-43. A string of turn overs by PG Steve Hemsley opened up this lead by HOW. It caused me to lose my cool, and berated Hemsley during a timeout.

2nd Half
  • 15:59, Down 43-47. We showed some sense of urgency on defense, plus a couple of 3s from SG Morrow Tiggs got us back in this game.
  • 11:38, Down 43-50. We couldn't buy a basket the last 4 mins.
  • 6:00, Down 51-56.
  • 3:55, Up 59-56. A 3pt shot by SG Morrow Tiggs tied the game. After a turn over by HOW, PG Steve Hemsley hits a 3 of his own, and we retake the lead after a long while. We're 9-18 3PT so far.

A steal by SG Morrow Tiggs. Outlet to C Mike Holiday who scores on the break plus a foul. Holiday hits the bonus. Up 6. A miss 3 by HOW. On our next play, PF Jordan Davis made a nice move to the basket and scores. Up 8. HOW turns it over again on a traveling call. Up 64-56, 2:46.

We turned it over also. We got called for a foul on the other end, but HOW missed the front end of a 1-and-1. We get the rebound. I shouted instructions to slow down. Our shot got blocked. HOW missed on their next play. I called a timeout just to settle things down. Up 64-56, 1:39.

But we turned it over again. Another foul called on us. HOW made both FTs, their 1st set of pts since the 6:00 mark. Timeout. Up 64-58, 0:59.

HOW elected to give up a series of fouls to get into penalty. PG Steve Hemsley sinks both FTs. Up 8. Timeout HOW. Up 66-58, 0:50.

A miss by HOW. They fouled again, and PG Steve Hemsley adds 2 more FTs. Up 10. That should do it. My "pep talk" with Hemsley must have lighted a fire on him, as he was instrumental in this comeback win.

Game #22

Postby randy » Fri Feb 07, 2014 2:28 pm

Feb 7, 1998: Saint Peter's (9-12, 4-6) @ Sacramento St (14-7, 8-2)

1st Half
  • 13:46, Up 19-5. We had a good start, 3-3 from downtown, and we slowly built a good lead since then.
  • 7:35, Up 29-21. Our foul trouble allowing STPET to get closer.
  • Halftime, Up 45-33. Pts off STPET's 9 turn overs increased our lead to double digits

2nd Half
  • 15:59, Up 54-45.
  • 11:42, Up 63-49. SG Morrow Tiggs scored 6 straight pts earlier, keeping us at a safe distance from STPET.
  • 7:25, Up 68-53. The 2nd unit play well defensively, and able to hold on to our lead.
  • 3:56, Up 77-66.

We were able to effectively run off the clock in the last 2 mins, to prevent any late rally from STPET.

Bad news is that PF Jordan Davis suffered a sprained ankle (75%, 14 days)

Game #23

Postby randy » Sat Feb 08, 2014 1:59 am

Feb 10, 1998: Arkansas St (6-16, 4-7) @ Sacramento St (15-7, 9-2)

PF Jordan Davis is injured (sprained ankle, 75%, 12 days), and he won't play. This is a big blow on our limited big-man rotation

1st Half
  • 13:53, Down 6-9.
  • 7:35, Down 15-20. And we're not getting any breaks on the fouls, as we got into penalty early.
  • Halftime, Up 31-27. C Mike Holiday (15 pts, 6 rebs) very instrumental in getting us in the lead. Both our PGs have 4 foules each.

2nd Half
  • 14:28, Up 42-36. Both our PGs fouled out in the 1st minute of the 2nd half. Unbelievable. I got a T for complaining. We got some fast break pts that allowed us to retain the lead.
  • 11:51, Up 44-43.
  • 7:25, Down 48-53. Now our 3rd guard, an SG forced to play PG, also fouled out. We're forced to play a couple of seldom-used walk ons, just to have some fresh bodies on the court.
  • 3:33, Up 56-55. We came up with an 8-2 run to get back in the game. My unit on the floor are tired, but I just need them to give it some more.

We turn it over. And then we get called for another foul. ARKST makes both FTs. Down 1. PF Chris Osbourne answers with a low post basket. Up 1. And yet another foul on us. ARKST hits both FTs; ARKST is now +23 in FTAs. Down 1. Seldom-used walk on SG Tony Manheimer hits a big 3. Up 2. But Manheimer got called for a foul on the other end. ARKST hitting another pair of FTs. Timeout. Tied at 61, 2:04.

We turn the ball over. ARKST missed. We et the rebound. Timeout. Tied at 61, 1:17.

SG Morrow Tiggs missed a 3, despite my instructions to go heavy inside. And we get called for another foul. ARKST not missing their FTs lately, and adds another 2. Down 2. We turned it over. And another foul. ARKST hits both. I am now begging to be ejected in the game, as I stormed in the court. And rightfully, I was tossed out.

ARKST finished the game with more FTs, going 34-44 today (as compared to our 5-10 FT).

  • 13:51, Down 7-10.

  • 11:57, Up 47-46. We hope our 2nd unit can do just enough, to keep us in the game.
  • 7:25, Up 57-52. SF Lamoni Williams and SF Shawn Reid have played well together, hitting big shots to and keeping us in the lead.

Foul on USF. PG Steve Hemsley to shoot 1-and-1; Hemsley missed the front end. USF rebounds, and calls a timeout. Up 72-69, 0:57.

Another foul on us. USF splits their charities. Timeout. Up 72-70, 0:47.

SF Shawn Reid hits a big time 3! It is now a 2 possession game. Timeout USF. Up 75-70, 0:35. We just need to slow things down once we get the ball back

Foul called on us. USF splits again. Timeout. Up 75-71, 0:24.

USF has to foul. SG Morrow Tiggs splits his FTs. Up 5. A miss by USF, and that should do it.

A gut-it-out road win, coming back frm an 11 pt deficit earlier in the 1st half.

Postby randy » Sat Feb 08, 2014 4:49 am

Feb 17, 1998: Sacramento St (16-8, 10-3), @ Cleveland St (8-17, 4-9)

PF Jordan Davis is still injured (sprained ankle, 83%, 5 days), and he won't play.

1st Half
  • 12:19, Up 14-7. CLEV with 6 turn over already.
  • 7:24, up 24-14.
  • Halftime, Up 34-33. We allowed CLEV to go on a 10-0 run earlier, and our efforts in forcing 10 turn overs were wasted..

2nd Half
  • 15:53, Tied at 42.
  • 11:57, Down 52-53. We're having difficulty stopping CLEV's outside shooting, as they have shot 7-12 3PT.
  • 7:36, Up 61-59.
  • 2:44, Up 73-71. Both teams in penalty.

We turn the ball over, and got called for a foul on the other end. CLEV hits both FTs; CLEV is consistent from the line, 20-21 FT. Tied. Another bad pass by PG Steve Hemsley. But CLEV also with a turn over. Timeout. Tied at 73, 2:04.

I yanked out PG Steve Hemsley to the bench. SF Lamoni Williams drives, but he missed. CLEV with the rebound. Williams gets a steal. Outlet to C Mike Holiday for the slam. Up 2. Miss by CLEV. Rebound by Williams. SG Morrow Tiggs shoots a 3 and scores! Timeout CLEV. Up 78-73, 0:57.

Miss by CLEV. But they get the off rebound; their 2nd attempt wasalso missed. We finally secured the def rebound. I told the team to slow down. CLEV has to foul. Walk on PG Nyah Celuck sinks 2 FTs. 3-possession game, half minute remaining. That would be safe.

Another hard-earned road win. Defense in the end game won it for us.

Game #26 - Seniors' Day

Postby randy » Sat Feb 08, 2014 5:18 am

Feb 17, 1998: Cal St Bakersfield (12-13, 9-5) @ Sacramento St (17-8, 11-3)

PF Jordan Davis is still injured (sprained ankle, 96%, 1 day); he might play limited minutes. Aside from Davis, the other seniors in our team are SG Morrow Tiggs and C Mike Holiday. These 3 seniors are also our top 3 scorers for the season.

1st Half
  • 13:59, Tied at 12.
  • 7:21, Down 16-17. We're wasting a lot of opportunities at the line, going for just 1-6 FT.
  • Halftime, Up 31-27. Good scoring battle between SG Morrow Tiggs and BAK's SG James Mouring, both having 16 pts.

2nd Half
  • 14:54, Up 48-32. SG Morrow Tiggs had to sit on the bench with 4 fouls, but the other players stepped up.
  • 11:32, Up 50-36.
  • 6:45, Up 56-47. Our 2nd unit just barely hanging on to keep us in the lead.
  • 3:45, Up 64-54.

It is fitting that it took big performances from our 2 seniors (SG Morrow Tiggs and C Mike Holiday) to get us this win. BAK's SG James Mouring scored 31 pts, but didn't get enough support.

1st Half
  • 13:37, Up 19-11. We're 3-3 3PT, while SACRED is 2-2. We're in the penalty already, while SACRED has zero fouls.
  • 7:49, Up 26-17
  • Halftime, Up 41-36. We need to continue shooting well from the field (53% FG) in order to offset another FT-fest by our opponent.

2nd Half
  • 15:23, Up 49-45. SACRED able to tie earlier, but we got a couple of transition baskets to regain the lead.
  • 11:32, Up 57-53. SACRED keeping close with their 3pt shooting, now at 6-12.
  • 7:57, Tied at 62. We're in the penalty once again. We need to do a better job boxing out on def rebounds, as we are beaing beaten heavily on the boards.
  • 3:27, Down 70-71

SACRED missed. But they get their 13th off rebound of the game, which they capitalized and converted with a 3pt shot. What a wasted opportunity. Timeout. Down 70-74, 2:49.

PG Steve Hemsley missed a 3. A miss and another off rebound by SACRED. Fortunately, they miss the 2nd shot. We finally get the ball. We go to PF Jordan Davis, and Davis scores on the low post. Davis has played well today, with 21 pts. Down 2. SACRED missed a 3. Timeout. Down 72-74, 1:29

We go to PF Jordan Davis again, but he's too far out from the basket. We rotate the ball. Traveling on C Mike Holiday. SACRED able to score on a long jumper by their C. Down 4. Holiday's shot got blocked. SACRED turned it over also, but they were able to chew some clock. TImeout. Down 72-76, 0:25

We have to go for 3s and foul immediately. We missed a 3, and SACRED able to hit a FT. Game over. We did a very poor job in rebounding in this game.

Postby randy » Sat Feb 08, 2014 7:44 am

Mar 2, 1998: (9) Stephen F Austin (14-14, 8-8) vs (1) Sacramento St (18-9, 12-4)

Our RPI is only 73. If we want to play in the NCAA tournament, we have to win the conference tournament.

1st Half
  • 13:46, Down 11-12.
  • 7:25, Up 27-25. We're early in the penalty once again. Both teams shooting more than 50% FG. We started going favor inside.
  • Halftime, up 41-37. Our slightly better FG shooting (59-53%) offsetting SFA +12 advantage in FTAs

2nd Half
  • 15:22, Up 50-47. We started the 2nd half with a 9-0 run, but just as quickly, SFA countered with a 10-0 run afterwards.
  • 11:55, Down 52-53. After our hot start, shots have not been falling since.
  • 7:57, Up 60-59. We turned on our defense and forced some turn overs, to get easy transition pts.
  • 3:27, Up 66-63. SG Morrow Tiggs and SF Lamoni Williams each hitting a 3, but SFA continue to pile up pts from the FT line.

C Mike Holiday gets a block. On the ensuing offensive play, Holiday worked his way inside and gets an inside basket. Holiday is tired, but the senior is giving it all here, with 19 pts. Up 5. SFA responds with an inside basket also. Up 3. SG Morrow Tiggs called for too many steps; turn over #15 for us. SFA missed, but they get the off rebound. SFA resets their play, but they missed their 2nd chance opportunity. We get the def rebound. SF Lamoni Williams missed a 3. SFA turns the ball over, #17 for them. Timeout. Up 68-65, 1:50.

SFA steals the pass. But we get a counter steal. We can't get the ball inside. SG Morrow Tiggs had to settle for a 3; he missed. SFA rebounds and called a timeout. Up 68-65, 0:56.

SFA missed, but the refs said there was a foul. 2 FTs for SFA; they hit both. Timeout. Up 68-67, 0:49.

SG Morrow Tiggs had 2 attempts from 3; both missed. SFA secures the rebound, and calls a timeout. Up 68-67, 0:32.

We forced a turn over! Timeout. Up 68-67, 0:22.

We can slow down, and wait for their foul. SFA fouls quickly. 1-and-1 for SG Morrow Tiggs; and Tiggs hits both pressure FTs. Up 70-67, 0:20.

We need to defend the 3. But we got called for a foul, before SFA can take the shot. Double bonus, so 2 FTs for SFA; they hit both. I called my last timeout. Up 70-69, 0:16.

SFA fouls again. SG Morrow Tiggs to the line again. Tiggs missed the front-end. But PF Jordan Davis with the big off rebound. Davis follows up, missed, but got fouled. 2 FTs for Davis; Davis hit's the 1st, but missed the 2nd. SFA gets the def rebound. We're up 2. 0:11 left. SFA has no timeout.

We press. SFA able to cross the timeline. Refs whistled again. Foul on SG Morrow Tiggs! Oh no. I tried my best to not get a T. 2 FTs for SFA's SG Johnny Granville, who is 6-6 FT today. Granville hits both. Tied at 71, 0:05.

SFA pressed, and we didn't have time to put up a shot. We go to OT.

Overtime
  • 2:56, Up 73-71. We need to muster some more energy, and find a way to win. We made 3 successful defensive stops, while SF Lamoni Williams able to hit a jumper.

SF Lamoni Williams missed a 3. SFA had 2 chances to score, but they missed; SFA is 0-6 FG in OT so far. SFA called for a foul. Double bonus, and 2 FTs for PG Steve Hemsley; he splits. Up 3. Another miss by SFA, and ball goes out of bounds; our ball. Up 74-71, 2:07 OT.

SG Morrow Tiggs, who struggled towards the end of regulation, hits a clutch jumper from the left corner. Up 5. PG Steve Hemsley gets a steal. But SF Lamoni Williams missed his shot; that would have been a big basket if it went it. SFA now has the ball. SFA's PG able to get away from his defender, and scores on a drive. Up 76-73, 1:07 OT

SG Morrow Tiggs and drains a 3! Tiggs (21 pts) scoring our last 5 pts. Timeout SFA. Up 79-73, 0:58 OT

SFA missing their shot again; they are 1-9 FG in OT. We can slow down now. SFA had to foul quickly. SG Morrow Tiggs splits his FTs. Up 7. SFA not quitting, and they connect on a 3pt shot. Up 4. SFA fouls again. PG Steve Hemsley splits his FTs again. Up 5. Tiggs called for his 5th foul. SFA able to convert just 1 FT. I called my only remaining timeout in OT. Up 81-77, 0:27 OT

We were able to dribble some seconds off, before SFA able to foul. PG Steve Hemsley missed both FTs! Wow; this is not yet over. SFA will surely shoot a 3. But we got called for another foul before they can shoot. 2 FTs for SFA; they hit both. Up 81-79, 0:14 OT.

We have 2 PGs on the floor now. SFA quick with the foul. Now, its walk on PG Nyah Celuck to be tested on the line. Celuck hits both! Whew. Up 83-79, 0:12 OT

SFA hits a quick 3. Up 83-82, 0:05 OT

We were able to dribble the ball away, and time expired. Those 2 FTs by PG Nyah Celuck turned out to be very big, as it gave us a 2 possession lead. That was a close one.
