2nd Half

  • 7:23, Tied at 50.

We can slow down and wait for BAK to foul. We have 2 PGs on the floor. BAK fouls. PG Nyah Celuck hits both FTs. Up 4. BAK missed, but they get the off rebound, and the put back is good. BAK fouled right away. Up 72-70, 0:10.

PG Nyah Celuck sank both FTs again. Up 4. BAK missed their 3 pt attempt.

For the 2nd straight game, walk on PG Nyah Celuck saves us again, with his FT shooting.

Game #30 -Conference V Tournament Finals

Postby randy » Sat Feb 08, 2014 9:37 am

Mar 4, 1998: (2) Morehead St (17-12, 11-5) vs (1) Sacramento St (20-9, 12-4)

PF Chris Osbourne is done for the season with a broken hand (12%, 39 days).

We had our most lopsided win this season against Morehead St. But with our crippled front line rotation, plus Morehead St improvements (they won 11 of their next 14 games, after they lost to us), this is a comlpetely different ball game.

1st Half
  • 12:51, Up 16-12. We have forced 5 turn overs already on MORE, but MORE is shooting 71% FG if they manage not to throw the ball away.
  • 6:30, Tied at 28. It's our turn to turn the ball over, allowing MORE to come back.
  • Halftime, Up 40-38. Both teams shooting over 50% FG.

2nd Half
  • 15:04, Up 53-40. We're beginning to see the effects now of MORE's 16 turn overs.
  • 11:26, Up 62-48
  • 7:42, Up 68-57
  • 3:07, Up 82-66. We'll simply slow down the game now, and try to hold on.

We playing in the NCAA tournament! None of the current players have played in any post season tournament. I'm happy that our 3 seniors would finally experience playing in the big dance before they graduate.

Game #31 - 1998 NCAA Tournament Round 1

Postby randy » Sat Feb 08, 2014 1:00 pm

Mar 17, 1998: (14) Sacramento St (21-9, 12-4) vs (3) #12 Kentucky (22-8, 11-5)

Scouting Report
  1. Primary defense: 1-3-1 zone
  2. Offense focus: Balanced
  3. Key players:
    • Sr SG Terrance Phillips (16.5 ppg, 4.2 rpg, All-Conf, #38 class rank) - strained knee (85%)
    • Sr C Roy McCall (10.7 ppg, 8.6 rpg, #30 class rank)
  4. Strengths:
    • Defense: 17.1 opp topg (#14), 8.3 spg (#11)
  5. Weaknesses:
    • Shooting: 43.1% FG (#235), 34.1% 3PT (#194)
  6. How they got here:
    • Finished 5th Conference B; Lost Conference Tournament Semi Finals
Strategies
  1. If Phillips play, how effective would he be?
  2. What we have to worry though is that Kentucky plays a similar brand of defense as ours, by getting a lot of steals, and generating turn overs.

1st half
  • 12:22, Down 7-22. Our double-team defense not quick enough to cover their shooters. We also committed 4 turn overs, and UK has yet to turn the ball over.
  • 7:32, Down 11-36. UK are shooting the lights out, 7-11 3PT.
  • Halftime, Down 25-50. Aside from their shooting, UK also did well protecting the ball with only 3 turn overs, which didn't give us much opportunity to run the fast break. I will give as much playing time to our seniors, as from the looks of it, this could be the last game of their collegiate careers.

2nd half
  • 14:47, Down 36-55. Very good start in the 2nd half. Despite the deficit we're facing, the players are showing better energy on defense now.
  • 10:45, Down 38-55. It was good while it lasted, as UK once again stamping their speed and strength on us.
  • 6:30, Down 44-77.
  • 3:51, Down 50-80.

Nothing to be ashamed of in this loss. We had a good season, not only getting promoted to Conference U, but also won the conference tournament title. I'm very proud of this team, as they have shown resiliency in numerous occasions coming back from deficits, and finding ways to win at the end.

Game #32

Postby randy » Sat Feb 08, 2014 10:37 pm

Nov 16, 1998: Sacramento St (0-0) @ Milwaukee (0-0)

1st Half
  • 12:57, Tied at 13.
  • 7:29, Down 20-24. UWMIL's +12 advantage in FTAs the significant difference in this game.
  • Halftime, Down 33-38. Significant part of our offensive production comes from inside plays. But we need to improve our defense, and force more turn overs.

2nd Half
  • 15:55, Down 37-43.
  • 11:06, Down 41-50. UWMIL has defended the paint well, as our percentage even from the inside is very low.
  • 6:50, Down 43-60.

Not a good start, as our defense simply allowing UWMIL to score easily on their half court sets. An even bad news is that PG Matt Brewer suffered a broken ankle.
