Finding ways to win

Game #33 - 2000-01 NIT National Semi Finals

Postby randy » Wed Oct 15, 2014 11:16 am

Mar 28, 2001: (1) Alabama St (25-7, 14-2) vs (6) Mount St Mary (24-8, 11-3)

Pregame Notes
  • MOUNT somehow had a similar fortune with us. They topped their conference during the regular season, but lost in the semis of the conference tournament.
  • MOUNT scored an upset in the last round against UCLA. Sr C Jaquay Stinson had 21 pts and 8 rebs in that game. It will be confusing for our defense, because MOUNT has a couple of perimeter threats as well, most notably So SF Neil Stone who is shooting 52% 3PT the entire season.

Tip off

There are 2 major components why we won many games this season - force turn overs and control the rebounds. Today we're doing both. MOUNT already with 6 turn overs and zero off rebounds.
12:35, Up 14-3

We're not shooting the ball well at 33% FG, but we still managed to hold a double-digit lead because of our defense that has limited MOUNT to 19% FG.
6:09, Up 21-10

Scoring has been very difficult for both teams in the 1st half

Halftime, Up 27-21
FG shooting comparison is 31-26%. SG Haven Wilkerson is just 3-13 FG. MOUNT shot 1-12 3PT. We'll shift to favor inside on our offense in the 2nd half.

Start of 2nd half

MOUNT has climbed back because of our at least 4 turn overs already in the 2nd half.
13:56, Up 35-34

MOUNT eventually took a 2 pt lead, as they hit back-to-back 3s. SF Steffon DeLord answered back with 5 straight pts, and then MOUNT hit their last FG.
9:28, Up 44-43

C Chris Hawking, checking in the game for the 1st time, scored 2 baskets in the low post. SF Steffon DeLord burying another 3. MOUNT already in the penalty.
6:28, Up 53-45

MOUNT coming back very quickly on an 8-0 run, including 2 from beyond the arc, to tie the game. PG Thomas Scott able to hit on a drive to restore our lead. MOUNT turned the ball over on their last play. We'll be shifting to purely m2m on defense the rest of the way, and increase def intensity (we only have 2 team fouls)
3:30, Up 55-53

We turn the ball over again (#16 for the game). MOUNT hitting another 3 to take the lead; they hit 5 of their last 8 3PT attempts, after starting 1-13. Timeout
2:48, Down 55-56

ALST: SG Haven Wilkerson missed a 3. He should have taken it inside.
MOUNT: They missed a 3 as well
ALST: SG Haven Wilkerson gets the ball. This time he puts the ball on the floor, drives, pulls up, and hits a tough bank shot!
2:07, Up 57-56

MOUNT: Their season's leading scorer SF Neil Stone forced to take a contested long jumper. Miss. Stone has struggled today, 2-13 FG. Timeout.
1:41, Up 57-56

ALST: C Reginald Davis taking a long jumper. Miss. What a bad shot selection on an important possession.
MOUNT: They made us pay. PG Daniel Hampton, who has shot the ball well today, hitting a 3 against a double team! Timeout
1:05, Down 57-59

ALST: We were able to get it to SG Haven Wilkerson. Wilkerson shoots. Miss. We get the off rebound. PG Johnny Victor drives. Miss. Ball knocked out of bounds. Ball belongs to MOUNT
MOUNT: 0:39 left. No need to foul. C Jaquay Stinson able to get away with a spin move in the low post. He missed an easy layup. But Stinson able to get his own miss. 2nd shot is good. That is Stinson's 1st FG of the game. Timeout.
0:26, Down 57-61

We need a 3. And then foul

ALST: SG Haven Wilkerson missing a 3. We get the off rebound. This time, it is PG Johhny Victor who tries a 3. Another miss. MOUNT gets the rebound. We foul.

But we are 4 fouls away from the penalty. 0:07 left. Not gonna happen.

Final Score: Alabama St - 57, Mount St. Mary - 61
Disappointing loss. We controlled most of the game. MOUNT found the right time for their outside shots to fall.

What we did well
  1. FG shooting, including from 3PT territory
  2. Going to the FT line
  3. Defending the 3PT shot
  4. Forcing turn overs

Biggest areas of improvement
  1. Rebounding (*)
  2. Shot blocking
  3. Sending opponents to the FT line

(*) could possibly because of 2 things: our high FG% means less offensive rebound opportunities, and/or the turn overs we force means less defensive rebounds

2001-02 Alabama St Lineup

Postby randy » Wed Oct 15, 2014 11:56 pm

Starting Lineup
  • 1: Jr PG Johnny Victor, 6-4, 1.5/1.5
  • 2: Sr SG Haven Wilkerson, 6-5, 3.0/4.5
  • 3: Jr SF Terrance Walls, 6-8, 2.5/3.5
  • 4: Jr PF David Andrews, 6-8, 3.0/3.5
  • 5: Sr C Seneca Popp, 6-9, 2.5/3.5
Bench
  • 1/2: Fr SG Drew Walker, 6-1, 2.0/4.0
  • 1/2: Jr PG Thomas Scott, 6-1, 1.5/3.5
  • 4/5: Fr C Robbie Wise, 6-10, 1.5/2.5
  • 3: Fr SF Thurman Clark, 6-6, 1.0/4.0
  • 1/2: So PG Travis Reuter, 6-2, 1.0/4.0
  • 4/5: So C Will Perkins, 6-8, 1.0/4.0
  • 4/5: So C Chris Hawkins, 6-8, 1.0/2.0
  • 1/2: So SG Solomon Hillier, 6-2, 1.0/3.0
Walk-ons
  • 4/5: Sr PF Brad Nabors, 6-8, 2.0/2.0
  • 3/4: Jr SF Charlie Jones, 6-8, 2.0/2.0

Departures (last year's stats)
  • C Reginald Davis (11.0 ppg, 7.0 rpg)
  • SF Steffon DeLord (6.1 ppg, 4.1 rpg)
  • SG Michael Everhart (4.1 ppg, 1.5 apg)

Notes:
  • We lose our top 2 rebounders from last season, Davis and DeLord. Rebounding will be a major concern this season. We put in more practice time on 2-3 zone, to help cover our weakness on the boards. Popp is a stop-gap measure on the 5 spot, but our young big men must develop quickly.
  • The contributions of Walker, and the rest of our bench, will also be major factor in our performance.

Recruitment Updates

Postby randy » Thu Oct 16, 2014 12:01 am

Signed so far
  • SG Joe Lewis, 6-0, 3.2 GPA, class rank #19 (Centre, AL)
  • C Marcus Moore, 6-10, 2.9 GPA, #35 (Oneonta, AL)

I am very pleased with the signings of 2 very good local talents.. If things go according to plan, Lewis and Moore will be the future foundation of this team.

Game #34 - Start of 2001-02 Season

Postby randy » Thu Oct 16, 2014 1:35 am

Nov 14, 2001: San Diego (0-0) @ Alabama St (0-0)

Pregame Notes
  • UCSD's SF Mike Gipson averaged 20.3 ppg last season

Tip off

Good start for PF David Andrews, 8 pts, 4-4 FG. UCSD already connected on 3-6 3PT
12:38, Up 15-12

Quality minutes by Fr C Robbie Wise, 5 rebs in 6 mins. UCSD continues to hit outside bombs. We'll shift to m2m full time, increasing def intensity
7:51, Up 20-18

Tough shooting start for SG Haven Wilkerson, 2-10 FG, but the other players chipped in on offense. I am impresses so far on the aggressiveness of PF David Andrews (10 pts) and C Robbie Wise (4 pts, 6 rebs)

Halftime, Up 34-29
We're doing relatively well on rebounding (+4 differential), an area where we think we would struggle this season. UCSD shooting hot from the perimet, 7-15 3PT

Start of 2nd half

We started scoring on transition due to UCSD's turn overs (17 already). SG Haven Wilkerson picking up his offense, 10 pts in the 2nd half, after scoring only 4 during the 1st.
11:41, Up 51-37

Our guards hitting a couple of 3PT shots. UCSD going cold from the outside, 0-6 3PT in the 2nd half.
7:55, Up 58-39

UCSD heated up form long distance with 4 triples, but it was too late for them. Our bench finished the game.

Final Score: San Diego - 59, Alabama St - 71
We did well scoring on transition. Another notable stat is our passing, dishing out 23 assists on 31 made FGs. UCSD's SF Mike Gipson finished with 14 pts, 5-15 FG
