Early on before the regular season began, my boss gave me a call and asked what I thought about the current team and what kind of results we would have. I told him I was super confident in the team and promised him a deep playoff run. I was tempted to say we were a championship contendor, but I didn't want to put that type of pressure on myself.
He then asked me what sort of budget I had expected for the season. Considering we were already $15 million over the cap at the type, I answered his question with another question: what do you think about the luxury tax? He wasn't too happy with that response.
Fast forward a year later. The phone rings and it's The Boss. He wants to know how I thought about how I did at my job this year. I told him I thought I did well with what I had to work with (limited cap and roster spots). He reflected back on my first pohne call and said that I didn't live up to my promise and overspent on this roster. He said I'm lucky to keep my job and need to have a better season.
A couple days later, he wanted to know my outlook on the 2013-2014 season. Our team is another year older and we are now $17 million over the cap. I told him I expect to win the division, staying clear of any playoff predictions after last season's disaster. When asked about the payroll, I was very blunt with him saying we are goiing to be in the luxury tax with our current salaries. Again, he wasn't too happy with that response but what am I to do? I'll have to make due with what we have and if I need to shed salary somehow, I'll have to get creative.
