New York, New York! Bringing a championship home

March Player of the Month – Ish Faye, Indiana Pacers – 24.5 points, 8.8 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.8 steals and 3.1 blocks per game.

March Rookie of the Month – Steve Respert, Nevada Neon – 18.6 points, 7.5 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 0.3 steals and 0.1 blocks per game.

The Neon must be really tired as they played 21 games in 30 days which is just crazy. Talk about a Hell Month.

With eleven games to go it would great if we get up to OKC and get playoff home court advantage. We start off well, beating the Celtics in Boston 103-93. Marshod was fantastic with 30 points while Cort and Ken combined for 28 points and 21 assists. Julius Hobbs went 4/13 but still finished with 20 points and 15 rebounds.

Brooklyn Nets 56-16

Well, I’m pretty sure we can’t catch the Thunder now was we somehow give up 34 points in the last term to lose to the Lakers 128-120. Three Lakers had 18 points with Terrell Sinville leading the way with 10 assists on 5/7 shooting. Marshod and Cort combined for 62 points but we just lost our heads in the last term. Disappointing.

Brooklyn Nets 56-17

We were always going to punish the next team we played but I didn’t expect a 140-88 scoreline against Phoenix. Cort had 31 points as we shot 58% from the field with Matias adding 17 points in 16 minutes. There isn’t anything much more to say other than we outscored the Suns 83-34 in the first and last quarters.

Brooklyn Nets 57-17

I do love beating the Pacers, especially when they have a full team. Marshod didn’t let me down with 25 points and 10 rebounds as we win 118-111. It seems lately we have been having great last quarters and this was no different as we outscored them 40-27. Marlin is back to his best with 20 points and 11 rebounds and had his usual terrible night at the line, going 6/14. Ish Faye did his best with 34 points and 9 rebounds but when Jason Wilks shoots 23 shots compared to Michael Harmon’s 11, it’s going to be a bad night.

Brooklyn Nets 58-17

Marlin had a blinder in our 115-97 win over Nevada with 29 points and 18 rebounds to really show Oliver Roe how it’s done. Of course Marshod had 22 points but tonight was all about our big guy. Steve Respert had 12 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Neon.

Brooklyn Nets 59-17

This is game four of our nine game home stand and we don’t let it go to waste, beating Memphis 103-81. Cort had 22 points while Abel and Marlin had 22 points and 27 rebounds between them. We held the Grizzlies to 35% shooting as Reggie Smith had only 12 points on 5/19 shooting.

Brooklyn Nets 60-17

Woo, 60 wins!

Cort, Marlin and Ken combined for 81 points, 24 rebounds and 21 assists to obliterate the Wizards 124-98. Rowan Taylor was held to only 15 points and 6 turnovers but it seems that we can’t catch the Thunder and we will have to be content with only Eastern Conference home court advantage.

Brooklyn Nets 61-17

We’re five games behind the Thunder with four games left to go so that’s out of the window while we’re five games ahead of the Wizards for first place in the East. You know what that means? Resting starters! OK, it’s not that exciting.

Our new starting five is Perez/Anderson/Brown/Williams/Bain as both Abel and Marlin want to keep playing so Ken, Cort and Marshod get to sit out a while. Luigi is still injured with his broken ankle but should be good for the playoffs.

What a game from Abel as he puts up 25 points, 15 rebounds and 6 steals as we beat up the Pistons 105-94. Matias and Curtis add 18 points each and even though Matias had 9 assists he did have 6 turnovers. In fact, this was a heavy turnover game as we lost the ball 24 times and Detroit 27 times. Detric Jones had 26 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists for the losers.

Brooklyn Nets 62-17

It’s great that we stole the Bobcats’ draft pick as they are so much more horrible than I thought they would be and we heap on more misery with a 128-96 win. Curtis led this time with 29 points while Marlin had 23 points and 15 rebounds. I recalled Jon Childs from the D-League (where he averaged 13 points and 4 rebounds a game) and he went off with 16 points in 14 minutes. Great for him. Joe West had 21 points for the terrible, terrible Bobcats.

Brooklyn Nets 63-17

Tiburcio Tommasini had no mercy for his old team, going 18/28 for 42 points but we had the last laugh, riding 32 points and 15 rebounds from Marlin to win 133-113. Matias and Curtis were no slouches either, combining for 42 points and 24 assists as we shot 55%. Michael Taylor was pretty bad, going only 7/17 for 18 points.

Brooklyn Nets 64-17

Our last game of the season was a breeze, beating the overpaid and under performing Hawks 114-72. Matias had 22 points and 8 assists but when it’s such a huge blowout everyone gets a go with six players in double figures and everyone getting at least eight minutes. Michael McQuay must be kicking himself for re-signing with Atlanta and went 6/21.

Brooklyn Nets 65-17

2037 NBA Playoffs

Eastern Conference
#1 Brooklyn vs. #8 Detroit
#2 Washington vs. #7 Chicago
#3 Miami vs. #6 Cleveland
#4 Indiana vs. #5 Boston

Western Conference
#1 Oklahoma City vs. #8 San Diego
#2 Dallas vs. #7 Houston
#3 Milwaukee vs. #6 Sacramento
#4 Minnesota vs. #5 Utah

We lost our first match up of the season and then beat them by 30, 31 and 11 so I’m pretty confident here.

Eastern Conference First Round – Detroit vs. Brooklyn

Point Guard
Detric Jones vs. Cort Majishun
12.9 points, 5.3 assists, 4.5 rebounds vs. 19.0 points, 8.8 assists, 3.9 rebounds

Jones has been a good point guard over the years, coming out in the same draft as Majishun he just isn’t in the same league as the Brooklyn captain and will get eaten alive.

Winner - Brooklyn

Shooting Guard
William Shine vs. Kenneth Long
8.1 points, 6.2 assists, 4.6 rebounds vs. 17.3 points, 5.6 assists, 5.1 rebounds

There is one reason and one reason alone for Shine’s starting position here, he’s a dynamic defender. Sure he can score and a good passer but Shine sole purpose in life is to stop opposing guards in their tracks. It’s going to be hard here as even if we get past the five inch difference Long is a superstar and is itching for another title.

Winner - Brooklyn

Small Forward
Ryan Obrien vs. Marshod Anderson
15.6 points, 1.6 assists, 5.3 rebounds vs. 26.7 points, 1.3 assists, 5.5 rebounds

Many people thought that Anderson was putting up great numbers on a terrible Toronto side but when Brooklyn traded for him it seems that he’s just that damn good anywhere. Obrien (no apostrophe, pronounced 'ob-rien') is also a great defender and will need to pull out all of his tricks to slow down this scoring dynamo.

Winner - Brooklyn

Power Forward
Ipolitas Margolis vs. Abel Williams
12.4 points, 1.4 assists, 7.0 rebounds vs. 9.5 points, 1.1 assists, 7.5 rebounds

There are only two Latvians in the NBA at the moment, Margolis and his Detroit teammate Betsalel Franckevidius and hopefully there will be more in the future. He’s got the best of Williams here as Margolis is very happy that the much bigger Salvador Rios is starting here like he has done in the past.

Winner - Detroit

Centre
Jamie McMillian vs. Marlin Bain
21.7 points, 0.7 assists, 9.0 rebounds vs. 15.2 points, 0.9 assists, 9.0 rebounds

There is so much pressure on the 23 year old McMillian it’s staggering. Having a whole city on his shoulders would be hard for anyone but for a guy who is in his second season it’s just unfair. Remember, the Lions and the Red Wings had horrible seasons this year so all eyes of Michigan will be on the 7’3” beast. He’ll have to work for it as Bain has been the rock for the Nets and will like nothing more than to take McMillian down a peg or two.

Winner - Detroit

Bench
Brian Holmes, Adarrial Faye, PJ Zimmerman vs. Salvador Rios, Curtis Anderson, Matias Perez

This is just unfair. All three of the Brooklyn players would probably be better than the three Pistons put together and that’s not taking into account Luigi Cannavaro and John Brown.

Winner – Brooklyn

Prediction – Brooklyn in four. The Nets just have too much talent and have done this too many times to be threatened by this Pistons team.

Game one was like a summer day where the sun is out but there’s a slight wind: a breeze. Ok, that was terrible but we outscored them 41-17 in the first to send a message that we won’t mess around and from there we cruised to a 124-82 win. Ken went ballistic, going 8/11 from three for 37 points while Cort added 14 points and 15 assists to offset Marshod’s 5/18 night. Jamie McMillian was indeed fantastic, going 8/12 for 23 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocks but didn’t get any help as the Pistons shot 41% with the rest of the starters shooting 11/37.

Brooklyn leads 1-0

Another game, another 20 point drubbing as again we burst out of the gates with a 24-15 lead and our crowd are already thinking of who we will play in the next round. We shot 53% to their 41% as Marshod made up for his poor last game with 36 points. Abel and Marlin destroyed Margolis and McMillian with 23 points and 24 rebounds compared to Detroit’s pair of 21 points and 9 rebounds. Onto the Motor City!

Brooklyn leads 2-0

The Detroit crowd was insane. Instead of the usual plastic blow up clapper sticks, they had some kind of harder material that made so much noise when thousands were struck together I feel like I can’t even see straight, let alone hear anything. It didn’t put off the Pistons as Jamie McMillian, Ipolitas Margolis and Ryan Obrien combined to shoot 27/46 for 74 points and 31 rebounds as they regain some dignity with a 116-98 blowout. Marshod did well with 28 points and 5 steals but we just weren’t ready for their crowd. Kudos.

Brooklyn leads 2-1

It was Detric Jones’ turn to be the giant slayer with 23 points, 9 assists and 4 steals as the Pistons do the unthinkable and steal two games from us with a 112-102 win. Again the noise was unbearable but this time Jamie McMillian didn’t do anything with only 17 points in 17 minutes. Abel tried his best with 20 points and 4 steals but we need to regroup and try and get this series back on our terms.

Series tied 2-2

There were two sweeps with #1 OKC taking care of #8 San Diego and #4 Minnesota sidestepping #5 Utah.

There is nothing better than some home cooking. That feeling you get when you come home from being away and everything is where you left it and no-one has touched your stuff. That’s what it feels like when we come back to our home court as everything is as it should be and not in weird spots. That gave us the confidence to win again, this time behind Cort’s 29 points and 8 assists for a 118-93 win. Marshod had 24 points while Sal filled in for foul troubled Marlin with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Marlin was in foul trouble because Jamie McMillian had 21 points but he was also hassled by fouls, being limited to only 28 minutes.

Brooklyn leads 3-2

#3 Miami is moving onto the next round with a 4-1 series win over #6 Cleveland while #3 Milwaukee did the same against #6 Sacramento.

Much, much better. We ream the Pistons on their home court 53-32 in the middle two quarters to finally put down these feisty guys with a 105-85 win. Marshod should get the lion’s share of the credit with 35 points while Abel also did well with 18 points and 6 rebounds. Brian Holmes had his best game of the playoffs with 20 points and 12 rebounds as Jamie McMillian finally succumbed to the pressure and fouled out in only 17 minutes.

Brooklyn wins 4-2

#4 Indiana and #2 Dallas get past their respective opponents in six games which means that the 2-7 matchup of Washington and Chicago is going the distance.

While Patrick Blizzard and Marquis Bowen combined for 60 points for the Bulls, the Wizards do it with a team effort to take game seven 123-116 behind Eric Holt’s 21 points, 9 assists and 5 rebounds.

2037 NBA Playoffs

Eastern Conference
#1 Brooklyn vs. #4 Indiana
#2 Washington vs. #3 Miami

Western Conference
#1 Oklahoma City vs #4 Minnesota
#2 Dallas vs. #3 Milwaukee

It’s so strange to meet the Pacers at this stage as Ish Faye was injured for a while which slipped them down to fourth. We won the season series but I’m always massively wary of a team that has Faye and Michael Harmon.

Eastern Conference Semi Final – Indiana vs. Brooklyn

Point Guard
Michael Harmon vs. Cort Majishun
26.5 points, 13.8 assists, 3.5 rebounds vs. 19.8 points, 9.8 assists, 3.7 rebounds

There is exactly one point guard better than Cort Majishun, and that person is Michael Harmon. Sure some might have better stats than Majishun (Axel Rancik, Lou Beck) but only one is his superior. Unfortunately for Brooklyn, the favourite for the MVP award is on a tear, averaging four steals to go with his crazy stats above. If Harmon can nullify Majishun then this will be a short series.

Winner - Indiana

Shooting Guard
Jason Wilks vs. Kenneth Long
14.5 points, 1.3 assists, 4.5 rebounds vs. 16.7 points, 5.3 assists, 2.2 rebounds

Jason Wilks is short, a bad defender and not a good teammate which spells doom for the SG. Kenneth Long may not be the super, superstar that he used to be but he will wipe the floor with Wilks in this series.

Winner - Brooklyn

Small Forward
Peter Jones vs. Marshod Anderson
11.5 points, 1.0 assist, 3.2 rebounds vs. 25.7 points, 1.8 assists, 2.5 rebounds

Oh dear. If Anderson doesn’t average 40 points a game in this series then he didn’t do well enough. Peter Jones is, to put it bluntly, terrible. It will be extremely soon when Marcus Sanders starts here.

Winner - Brooklyn

Power Forward
Ish Faye vs. Abel Williams
26.7 points, 1.0 assist, 8.3 rebounds vs. 13.2 points, 2.0 assists, 6.7 rebounds

The reason the Pacers were fourth in the East is because Ish Faye only played 57 games. If he played 70+ they would have been near the Nets in wins, he’s that good. Brooklyn are going to throw everything they have at him in the hopes of at least slowing him down a little. Good luck with that.

Winner - Indiana

Centre
Josiah Williams vs. Marlin Bain
6.7 points, 0.0 assists, 5.0 rebounds vs. 11.2 points, 0.5 assists, 8.2 rebounds

It’s strange to see Williams starting here as he didn’t start a game in the previous series and is still injured with a strained calf. Marlin Bain loves the playoffs and is ready to take it up to the more experienced player. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Gerrod Phelan start here after a few games.

Winner - Brooklyn

Bench
Gerrod Phelan, Benjamin Capel, Marcus Sanders vs. Salvador Rios, Curtis Anderson, Luigi Cannavaro

The Pacers have fantastic front court depth on the bench in Phelan, Capel and Sanders but unfortunately they don’t have anything in the back court. That’s where the Nets will get them, as they have stellar second unit guards like Curtis Anderson and Matias Perez.

Winner – Brooklyn

Prediction – Brooklyn in six. The Pacers have two moves – Harmon and Faye. If they can fire then it will be a real close one but if even one of those two players falters, then it’s lights out.

I have a bad feeling about this as the Pacers are a really, really good team. Fortunately for us Marlin was great (apart from his 2/10 FTs) with 28 points and 15 rebounds. That was about the extent of our positives as Marshod, Abel, Ken and Cort combine to shoot 23/62 as we go down large in the third. We bounce back which gave the crowd a bit of hope but the deficit was just too large as we lose home court advantage 114-106. Michael Harmon was spectacular with 28 points, 12 assists and 7 rebounds while Ish Faye chipped in a lazy 22 points and 9 rebounds. It sucks that the rest of their starters were good with Peter Jones and Jason Wilks having 14 points each which just shouldn’t happen.

Indiana leads 1-0

Wow. I didn’t expect this from a game two where we were pretty handily beaten. Cort had 27 points and 10 assists while Marshod added 31 points as we outscore Indy 73-45 in the last half to tie the series 133-103. The reason we won is that even though Ish Faye and Michael Harmon had 58 points together the rest of the players were pretty average, with Marcus Sanders (who is now starting at SF) laying a goose egg on 0/8 shooting.

Series tied 1-1

If we are going to win this series we need to win either this game or the next (or preferably both). On the downside Michael Harmon continued his merry way with 33 points but he wasn’t the instigator that he usually is with only 6 assists as most of his shots were isolation plays. That means that the rest of the team didn’t get good looks as the Pacers shot only 37% from the field. As you can probably guess, we did well with Marshod leading the way with 35 points and we take back HCA with a 117-97 win. There were five other Nets in double figures led by Sal’s 13 points and 8 rebounds off the bench.

Brooklyn leads 2-1

In game four you could tell that Michael Harmon wasn’t happy about losing by so much last game. I probably think that he wasn’t very happy about losing in general and took it out on us with 29 points, 11 assists and 9 rebounds. The good news for Indiana is that he had help this time with Ish Faye and Josiah Williams combining for an even 50 points as they bring the series back again with a 114-98 win to make it a best of three series. Marshod was the best again for us with 34 points but after that it dropped off a lot. Two home games, two probable wins. Hopefully.

Series tied 2-2

Dallas showed their teeth as a real title contender as they swept aside the Bucks in four.

We can do this, we can do this. That was the mantra for game five as the crowd seemed to realise the weight of the situation and cheered at ever play. Ish Faye took it in his stride with 38 points, 12 rebounds and 5 blocks but again didn’t have any help as Michael Harmon ‘only’ had 16 points and 13 assists. This means that we took the first game of this now best of three series 119-93 behind Marshod’s 24 points and 8 rebounds and Marlin’s 21 points and 15 rebounds. I know I’ve said it before but where ever I am next season I’m going hard at Marlin.

Brooklyn leads 3-2

#2 Washington and #1 OKC get past their opponents in five games which means that we are the only series still running.

I don’t know how it happened but Ish Faye went 20/23 from the line for 36 points and 8 rebounds while Michael Harmon had 27 points and 7 assists. That’s not what I’m surprised about, it’s that even with those two guys going off we beat the Pacers pretty comfortably to win the series 114-99. Marshod Anderson had 26 points, Marlin added 22 points and 13 rebounds and Kenneth Long actually did something for once with 18 points and 8 rebounds. The reason we won is that apart form Faye and Harmon no-one else on the Indy team did anything so we let those two get theirs and snuffed out the rest. It seems to be a good plan.

Brooklyn wins 4-2

2037 NBA Playoffs

Eastern Conference
#1 Brooklyn vs. #2 Washington

Western Conference
#1 Oklahoma City vs. #2 Dallas

This just goes to show how much better the Wizards are now that Jason London is off the team and shows how much of a cancer London really is because Washington wasn’t this good when they had him on the team. We won the season series 2-1.

Eastern Conference Finals – Washington vs. Brooklyn

Point Guard
Eric Holt vs. Cort Majishun
13.5 points, 9.1 assists, 4.4 rebounds vs. 17.8 points, 9.2 assists, 3.3 rebounds

One of the Wizards who have overachieved in this post season, Holt has been a driving force in why the team is where it is. He should get a reality check with Majishun coming off a series against Michael Harmon who is head and shoulders above Holt.

Winner - Brooklyn

Shooting Guard
Kelly Pryor vs. Kenneth Long
16.1 points, 3.3 assists, 5.8 rebounds vs. 16.3 points, 4.8 assists, 3.9 rebounds

It’s strange that Long didn’t totally dominate against his much weaker opponent in Jason Wilks so it’s hard to judge how he will do against Pryor. I previous draft pick by Nets GM Yaxley Macmillan, Pryor is a magnificent defender and even though his percentages aren’t great he can score the basketball. It will be interesting to see which Kenneth Long turns up here.

Winner – Brooklyn (maybe)

Small Forward
Hayletts Wilcox vs. Marshod Anderson
20.9 points, 2.3 assists, 7.0 rebounds vs. 27.5 points, 1.4 assists, 3.8 rebounds

Wilcox is another Wizard who has blown up in the playoffs as he only averaged 10 points and 4 rebounds in the regular season. He won’t score as much here but if he can limit Anderson’s crazy good scoring ability I’m sure that Washington will call that a win.

Winner - Brooklyn

Power Forward
Rowan Taylor vs. Abel Williams
21.8 points, 0.5 assists, 5.7 rebounds vs. 9.6 points, 2.1 assists, 7.6 rebounds

The superstar of the Wizards squad. He may not be as good as he used to be and might not be able to do much more than score and defender a little but he has been their heart for 14 years and won’t give up now. There have been many an article about Taylor’s desire to win a title and someone like Abel Williams is not going to get in his way.

Winner - Washington

Centre
Brian Benton vs. Marlin Bain
9.0 points, 1.4 assists, 6.8 rebounds vs. 13.8 points, 0.8 assists, 9.3 rebounds

Benton has come off a broken ankle but he’s at 100% and ready to tear down anyone in his way. His defence is fantastic and is a great 1/2 punch with Rowan Taylor. Marlin Bain should be up for the task but with Benton's fire to make up for lost time it might not be enough.

Winner - Draw

Bench
Brian Caldwell, Andrew Brown, Robert Williams vs. Salvador Rios, Curtis Anderson, Luigi Cannavaro

Caldwell should start for many teams in the league but is a headcase, Brown is a good distributor but is slow and small while Williams has decent skills but is a turnstile on defence. While on the Nets’ side there is a huge depth of talent with guys who can rip it up off the bench or fill in for long stretches of time for the starters.

Winner – Brooklyn

Prediction – Brooklyn in five. Their last series against Indiana seems to have galvanized the Nets while the Wizards look to be at their limit. Even though Washington got the second seed in the East, if Ish Faye wasn’t injured they would be down to third and that would have been a whole other story. They are much better without Jason London but talent and experience wise, Brooklyn have the advantage.

Our crowd was standing and cheering for the first four minutes until the Wizards scored, while we had already put up 10 points. They came back to tie the game in the first quarter but it seemed they were playing catch up with Hayletts Wilcox and Brian Benton in foul trouble. After that we blew the game wide open with a 24-13 second quarter to hold that lead for most of the game until a flurry of baskets from the opposition brought the game to within seven. That is where the game would end as we draw first blood 102-95. Marshod was fantastic with 33 points and more importantly drawing fouls at will, going to the line twelve times. Cort added 18 points and 14 assists while Abel and Marlin added 21 rebounds and 5 blocks. Even though Brian Benton had foul trouble all game it didn’t stop him from dominating with 20 points, 12 rebounds and 7 blocks but Rowan Taylor only had 10 points which put a dampener on things on their end.

Brooklyn leads 1-0

It seems that the sleeping giant has woken up as Kenneth Long piled on 31 points, 7 assists and 4 steals as we heap on some misery to the Wizards with a 123-101 win. Marshod also had a blinder with 25 points, 12 rebounds and 7 steals as the team stole the ball 20 times and forced them into 28 turnovers to our 12. Andrew Brown had 24 points but was one of those butter finger players with 7 turnovers.

Brooklyn leads 2-0

In the last eleven years the Wizards have topped 50 wins eight times and has made the ECF series four times but has never been to an NBA Finals battle. Their crowd seems to know that fact and aren’t very impressed with the two losses we have given them and want revenge. It seemed to work as we scored the first two points of the game and that was our last lead as the Wizards get one back with a 124-113 win. Another sleeping giant woke up tonight with Rowan Taylor going 11/17 for 27 points with six other Washington players in double figures. Cort had 23 points and 16 assists, Marshod added 33 points but when a team goes 55% from the field it really is an uphill battle to win.

Brooklyn leads 2-1

Yes! This is exactly what I wanted. Last series we let Indiana win both of their home games but not here as our six point lead at quarter time was held for the next three quarters as we go to one game from another NBA Finals appearance with a 114-106 win. Cort was fantastic, going to the line 18 times (hitting 14) for 26 points while Marlin (22 points, 11 rebounds) and Marshod (27 points) were back up to our captain. It was another team effort for the Wizards with seven players in double figures and I really don’t know how we won this game. We shot 36% to their 49% while they had more rebounds, assists and blocks. It seems the reason was our defence again, forcing them to turn the ball over 19 times to our eight and going to the foul line as we shot 35/48 to their 15/24.

Brooklyn leads 3-1

We put this one to bed pretty quickly and even though the score was 115-110, a five point difference, the game was long gone and their garbage time was better than ours. Marshod had 35 points on 10/19 shooting while Marlin decimated Brian Benton for 29 points and 12 rebounds as they just didn’t have an answer to our aggressive style. Sal made the most of the garbage time with 12 points and 8 rebounds. Rowan Taylor did his best with 25 points but they were done and dusted.

Brooklyn wins 4-1

The Mavericks let a 3-1 series lead slip away as the Thunder ride a 38 point, 9 assist game from Mike Bickerstaf to win their game seven 116-97 to give them their first taste of NBA Finals action since 2019, nearly 20 years ago.

2037 NBA Finals

#1 Oklahoma City vs. #1 Brooklyn

We won the season series 2-0 but this OKC side is stacked and is clicking like one of those insect people that tried to invade in 2025 but was eradicated a year and a half later. Man, that was a good time.

Point Guard
Axel Rancik vs. Cort Majishun
19.6 points, 8.9 assists, 3.7 rebounds vs. 18.0 points, 9.8 assists, 3.5 rebounds

Don’t be fooled by Rancik’s below average numbers (for him). He broke his ring finger on his right (dominant) hand and has only played seven games in this post season while the Thunder have racked up 16 matches so far. He’s very nearly at full strength and he’ll need all of it as at 156lbs Rancik is tiny compared to the bull that is Cort Majishun. This will be so fun to watch.

Winner – Brooklyn (just)

Shooting Guard
Mike Bickerstaf vs. Kenneth Long
31.3 points, 7.8 assists, 4.9 rebounds vs. 16.4 points, 4.5 assists, 4.3 rebounds

The best player in this NBA Finals is Mike Bickerstaf and it isn’t even close. Have a look at those playoff numbers and you can see why the Nets are scared of what he can do here even against a superstar in Kenneth Long. Bickerstaf has been the heart, soul, head, legs, torso, eyes and whatever other part of the body you can think of for this Thunder organization and he’s just foaming at the mouth to win his first title. Long has been very disappointing so far but he if can slow down OKC’s captain he will have redeemed himself.

Winner – Oklahoma City

Small Forward
Victor Brinker vs. Marshod Anderson
13.5 points, 1.0 assist, 6.6 rebounds vs. 28.4 points, 1.4 assists, 4.6 rebounds

I don’t know why Brinker is still listed as a PF as he hasn’t played that position for a very long time and at 6’9”, 225lbs he’s much more suited to the SF position. His sore purpose in this series is to slow down Marshod Anderson as he Nets’ SF has been on a tear. On more than one occasion Anderson has saved his team and it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that Brooklyn wouldn’t be here if they didn’t trade #1 pick BJ Watson to Toronto for Anderson this season.

Winner - Brooklyn

Power Forward
Zan Tepavac vs. Abel Williams
19.7 points, 1.7 assists, 8.0 rebounds vs. 10.4 points, 1.6 assists, 7.3 rebounds

Coming into the league Tepavac was compared to Rowan Taylor, a fantastic scorer who can play defence but not much else. Now in his fourth year, Zan has nearly surpassed the Washington star as he is a better defender and a sneaky rebounder but not as good a scorer. He should run rings around Abel Williams who is a good player but not on the same level as Zan.

Winner – Oklahoma City

Centre
Brandon Bailey vs. Marlin Bain
3.8 points, 0.9 assists, 5.1 rebounds vs. 15.0 points, 0.8 assists, 9.1 rebounds

It’s strange to see rookie Bailey starting here as Corey Benjamin has started all of the regular season games. I guess Bailey is a good luck charm as he’s started all of the playoff games and they are in the NBA Finals. He’ll get a lesson against Marlin Bain who has really come into his own in the last couple of seasons. Bailey and Bain are quite similar as they were both drafted at the end of the first round (Bailey #26, Bain #26), very heavy (271lbs to 281lbs) and are rebounding and defensive specialists. I would expect that the Thunder would be quite happy if Bailey turned out like Bain in a couple of years.

Winner - Brooklyn

Bench
Chris Benjamin, Travis Grigsby, Jason Collins vs. Salvador Rios, Curtis Anderson, Luigi Cannavaro

Jason Collins has been one of the best point guards in the whole league for the seven years, averaging 14.1 points, 10.7 assists, 2.5 steals and only 2.8 turnovers a game before Axel Rancik came around. This season? 5.3 points, 2.7 assists and 0.7 steals. Such a waste but for this series he is a fantastic asset on the bench. Benjamin is also a great bench player and even though Grigsby’s best years are behind him he can still put the ball in the hole a few times a game. The Nets’ bench is better though as they could field a starting five of Matias Perez/Curtis Anderson/John Brown/Luigi Cannavaro/Salvador Rios who wouldn’t be far off getting into the playoffs

Winner – Brooklyn

Prediction – Oklahoma City in seven. Chris Duhon has taken his team to two WCF series in three seasons and with a dominant Mike Bickerstaf ripping it up they should go one further to win their first title as the Thunder.

What was that? Oh that’s right, we shot 55% to their 42% and kept Bickerstaf and Rancik to 4/18 shooting for 19 points to totally obliterate the Thunder 124-89. Marshod was the high scorer with 28 points but it was our captain who broke the hearts of the Thunder fans with 23 points and 14 assists. Sal was also great with a perfect game, going 7/7 from the field, 5/5 from the line with 19 points and 6 rebounds. Ken fouled out in 12 minutes but Curtis Anderson picked up the slack with 12 points but his main contribution was to hold Bickerstaf to 2/11 shooting.

Brooklyn leads 1-0

Oh my goodness. Game two will go down in the history books as one of the best NBA Finals games OF ALL TIME. Man, where do I start. For one, I’m pretty sure the crowd was literally out for our blood and their players were crushing us physically. We struck back as there were 71 fouls called in the game so you can assume this game went for a while with all the stops. Ok, to the game.

The first quarter was a slow affair as both teams were wary of each other but we end the quarter with a three point lead at 17-14. The second quarter both teams got rid of pleasantries and that’s when the fouls started. On our side it was Marlin and Marshod, on the other side with was Rancik and Bickerstaf but at the half we still had that three point lead. The third was more of the same with guys picking up fouls like their coins on the street with Abel, Marlin, Ken, Cort, Sal and Luigi on our side with at least three fouls while Brinker, Tepavac, Bailey, Bickerstaf, Rancik and Benjamin with at least three. As you can expect, there were some guys on the court who haven’t been there all season. Marlin was taking Brandon Bailey to school in the fourth and finished the game with 31 points and 14 rebounds as the game went back and forth with many, many lead changes and ties. With us up by three with 16 seconds in the game the ball of course went to OKC’s superstar and he dribbled, dribbled, dribbled and with four seconds to go in the game went past a Chris Benjamin screen to splash a three to tie the game with time expiring.

Both teams were exhausted but little did they know that this was just the beginning. In the first overtime Abel fouled out, and so did Brandon Bailey but the score was still tied. It was tied in the second, third and fourth overtime with Sal and Luigi fouling out as well. Chris Benjamin also fouled out during this stretch so seldom used Ruben Sheffer had to come off the bench for big minutes. With 23 seconds to go Mike Bickerstaf hit another three pointer to put them up by three as I have no idea how he had the strength to shoot that far in a fifth overtime but it was nothing but net. We had a shot from Marshod who had hit 7/8 threes before this but missed and the Thunder consolidated their lead with one free throw to make it a two possession game. We couldn’t get it back as the Thunder finally broke the deadlock after 73 grueling minutes to win 135-131. It was well into the morning when this game finished but the OKC crowd was still as loud as ever and I tip my hat to this organization and team for sticking until the very end.

Now for some stats. There were 32 lead changes in the game as well as 21 ties with 12 players with at least four fouls. Mike Bickerstaf just wouldn’t let his team lose, going 15/24 for 42 points, 8 assists and 7 rebounds but was helped by Axel Rancik’s 31 points and 16 assists. Bickerstaf, Rancik, Victor Brinker and Zan Tepavac all played at least 50 minutes while Marshod, Marlin, Ken and Cort above the 50 minute threshold. As I said before Marlin had 31 points and 14 rebounds while Marshod added 29 points as was fantastic down the stretch. Our captain shot terribly (4/21) but did everything else in his power with a 17 point, 11 rebound and 10 assist triple double but as you could probably expect, everyone was just out of gas.

Now both teams have just one rest day before we have to do it all again.

Series tied 1-1

For our first home game in the Finals I was completely blindsided. In a TV timeout break in the second quarter the announcer said for the sold out house to stand on their feet and give me as loud as possible cheer for bringing this team two titles, their first in the club’s history. This applause went for the entire full time out as they have all heard that I will be leaving after this season because of differences with our owner. I have to be honest, I cried my eyes out as 18,103 people thought of me in such a high stead, it was an amazing thing to do and I’ll never forget it.

That seemed to electrify the team as we turned a five point quarter time deficit into a five point half time lead and we pushed on from there, actually finishing the game in regulation 111-95 to take the series lead. Marshod was fantastic with 33 points while Cort continued his good and bad performances with 17 points and 14 assists but shot 4/11. The bad news was that Abel Williams, after this 16 points and 11 rebounds was diagnosed with a strained calf and will probably in street clothes for at least the next two games. Axel Rancik had 22 points and 13 assists but Mike Bickerstaf only had 18 points on 6/15 shooting.

Brooklyn leads 2-1

Sal will slide into our starting PF position.

Well, he was outclassed by the smaller, quicker and just better Zan Tepavac who had 25 points compared to Sal’s 13 points and 6 rebounds in only 18 minutes before fouling out so he at least went down fighting. Marlin was our best with 17 points and 13 rebounds and it seems that Mike Bickerstaf is starting to crack under all the pressure as he only attempted five shots, hitting two before getting ejected after two technicals in only 30 minutes. With no Bickerstaf we ran roughshod over OKC, outscoring them 34-11 in the last term to go to within one game of a threepeat with a 106-83 win. Cort had 22 points and Marshod added 21 points but it was our defence that was the game, forcing 14 turnovers and holding them to 39%, with Axel Rancik being the main culprit at 6/22.

Brooklyn leads 3-1

With the NBA Finals format being 2-3-2 we have a chance to win it all at home. And you know what, I’m not going to draw it out, we held Bickerstaf and Ranick to 14/46 shooting while Marlin had 23 points and 17 rebounds as we torch the Thunder 101-87 to complete the first threepeat since Dallas did it only in 2031-32-33. Cort was amazing and enjoyed every minute of this game with 25 points and 12 assists as the game was over at three quarter time. Sal had a much better game with 12 points, 9 rebounds and 6 blocks but that has more to do with Zan Tepavac fouling out in only 12 minutes with 4 points to his name. Celebrate good times, come on!

The streamers rained from the ceiling as the team huddled together but the best thing for me was when I got to the court the huddle surrounded me so I was totally engulfed by this team that means so much to me. The photo on my office wall is of that occasion as you can just see my head in the centre of these giant players. I’m 6’4” but I looked tiny compared to these guys.

There were some serious contenders for Finals MVP with the likes of Marshod Anderson (25.6 points, 5.6 rebounds) and Marlin Bain (19.0 points, 12.8 rebounds) but none other than our superstar captain took home the trophy with averages of 20.8 points, 10.8 assists and 5.0 rebounds as he really stepped up when it counted.

Brooklyn wins 4-1

About 16 hours after we had won it dawned on me that I won’t be here next season, and all of this hard work will go to someone else as I will probably have to start from the bottom again. At least I get to go nuts at my boss. Sigh.

It’s now been 25 years since I’ve been in the league so that means it’s time for the Quarter Quell. No, not really but I can’t believe that the Hunger Games books are so well regarded now and is mandatory reading at schools. There is going to be four sections to this recap – team records, player records, miscellaneous and my top 25 players drafted since I’ve been in the league. That means that the Anthony Davis draft is the last one to be not counted.

Top 25 of the last 25

It’s been 25 years since Anthony Davis was drafted into the NBA and completely changed the world of basketball. He can be named as one of the best, if not the best defensive player of all time. In fact, some might not even think it is really a debate, he is the best defensive player of all time. He won five most valuable player awards and between the years of 2015 and 2025 he won every single defensive player of the year award. He was that good. His stats back this up, with the most blocked shots of all time and second most steals, sitting behind legendary ball sneak John Stockton. He is also nestled in at #17 in most rebounds. This is most impressive for a 6’11” power forward to average 1.8 steals per contest for his entire career. His blocks are out of this world, averaging 3.3 blocked shots for the entire 19 year career, putting him nearly 1200 blocks ahead of second placed Hakeem Olajuwon who many thought would hold his title as best shot blocker forever.

But what about the rest of the league in the last 25 years? Who have been the players to rise to the top not named Anthony Marshon Davis, Jr? This reporter looks back to rank the best of the best.

#25 – C Jeff Cunningham
Drafted - #6 by Los Angeles Lakers in 2017
Career Stats – N/A

There have only been two players since AD to have their numbers retired by a team. One is further up this list and the other is Jeff Cunningham. He may have stunk it up on the defensive end but he was a force with the basketball. His number was retired by the Lakers in 2035 when he hung up the boots after winning numerous All NBA team honours and even gaining a ring with Dallas after demolishing three of best centres in the game during the playoffs.

[OOC – I couldn’t find Cunningham’s stats as he has retired. Maybe for DDS:PB4 there could be a section that has all of the past players stats. Might be too much but just putting it out there.]

#24 – SG Magnus Carlsson (Sweden), 6’7”, 220lbs
Drafted - #1 by Golden State Warriors in 2030
Teams – Golden State, Dallas, Milwaukee
Career Stats – 22.5 points, 0.7 assists, 1.7 rebounds, 0.2 steals, 0.0 blocks

There are two types of people, ones that go along for a long time with negligible highs and lows. Then there are people who burn so hot that they burn out very quickly. Magnus Carlsson’s NBA career was definitely in the second category. Coming over at the age of 33 with his brother Oskar, Magnus was spectacular. His first season in 2030 was the fifth highest scoring season of all time, right up there with Wilt Chamberlain and Michael Jordan where he averaged 38.9 points on 55% shooting. He was just electric, hitting the most three pointers in a season that year. His next three seasons were also fantastic, averaging 20.4 points in 19.9 minutes at the age of 36 is just phenomenal and he will go down as one of the biggest ‘what if’s’, what if he came over when he was 20 years old?

#23 – C Rowan Taylor (Houston), 6’11”, 246lbs
Drafted - #1 by Washington Wizards in 2022
Teams - Washington
Career Stats – 21.6 points, 0.7 assists, 5.4 rebounds, 0.4 steals, 0.0 blocks

Rowan Taylor was similar to Jeff Cunningham as he was a dynamite scorer but couldn’t do much else. Taylor was an above average defender but when a 6’11” guy can only average 5.4 rebounds a game it’s not the best. What was the best was his unbelievably efficient low post moves. He shot 61.1% from the field for his career through bamboozlement and cunningness while his footwork was second to none. Even though he could shoot the ball fairly well from the foul line (73.8%) he will always been known as the leader of the nation’s capital’s team, leading them to four consecutive Eastern Conference Finals and only once dipping under 50 wins for a season since 2027.

#22 – C Jimmy Forrest (Connecticut), 6’11”, 280lbs
Drafted - #8 by Golden State in 2020
Teams – Golden State, Milwaukee, San Diego, Portland, Memphis, Boston, Portland, Philadelphia
Career Stats – 20.6 points, 0.9 assists, 5.8 rebounds, 0.7 steals, 0.3 blocks

Going off his teams played, you would think that Forrest would be one of those guys who was good enough to be in the league but never sticking with one team. Wrong! He was one of the best players in the league but his toxic attitude caused him to alienate himself from his teammates and he would then be moved on. Which is shame, because at his best he was someone who just couldn’t be stopped, averaging at least 20 points a game in fourteen straight years. His game was similar to that of Rowan Taylor and Jeff Cunningham who were dynamite scorers but were lacking in other areas but Jimmy Forrest was the best of all.

#21 – SG Varlam Chavchavadze (Estonia), 6’2”, 197lbs
Drafted - #1 by Boston Celtics in 2021
Teams - Boston
Career Stats – 18.6 points, 6.7 assists, 4.3 rebounds, 0.5 steals, 0.6 blocks

He might have been overshadowed a little by his teammate Raul Lopez but ‘Chav-chav’ is no slouch. Known as Sõdalane, which is Estonian for warrior as he has missed just 17 games in 15 years due to injury. At only 6’2” many thought he would no be able to guard the biggest, more aggressive guards in the NBA but after all this time he has proved that time and time again. His tenacity and grit forced many teams to change their game plans while he punished many a player who thought they could take a step back. He reveled in the battle of the NBA, and was always seen studying game tape or at a gym, no matter what state or country he was in. He has also been with one team his whole career, dismissing free agent lurings to stay with the Celtics.

#20 – SF Lars Ray (Belgium), 6’6”, 206lbs
Drafted - #12 by Brooklyn Nets in 2024
Teams – Brooklyn, Los Angeles
Career Stats – 24.9 points, 1.5 assists, 5.8 rebounds, 0.7 steals, 0.0 blocks

A bit of a under the radar kind of player, Ray is no less amazing. Starting out slow in Brooklyn before exploding in his third year, he didn’t get to elite status until traded to the Lakers. There he was simply a scoring machine, scoring at least 25 points a game for the last six years, all in La La Land. He’s not afraid to go after the big rebounds and at only 6’6” that’s a tall order. At 32 years old he still has a few years left in him and has an interesting record of having the highest scoring game in the last 25 years with 69 points in 2027 against Detroit.

#19 – PG Camah Williams (Washington State), 6’3”, 186lbs
Drafted - #2 by Minnesota Timberwolves in 2023
Teams – Minnesota
Career Stats – 22.6 points, 7.4 assists, 3.3 rebounds, 2.1 steals, 0.3 blocks

Camah Williams is just as text book a point guard that you could ever ask for. He’s a fantastic scorer, loves to drop a dime any time and is one of the best defenders you have ever seen in the last 25 years. He averages 2.2 steals a game and is a mainstay on All Defence teams year in and year out. With his buddy Enrique Mendez they won one championship in 2026, beating the Bobcats in seven games. It’s strange that he can also be thought of being an underachiever as he is that good he should be #1 on this list but he has been known to cruise through games and even months. This might have got through to him as at 32 years old he has just had one of best his best seasons to date.

#18 – SG Tobe Slaughter (Miami OH)), 6’7”, 219lbs
Drafted - #10 by Portland Trailblazers in 2027
Teams – Portland, Dallas
Career Stats – 21.9 points, 3.1 assists, 3.8 rebounds, 0.9 steals, 0.0 blocks

I’m just going to come out and say it: Tobe Slaughter is the best shooter of all time. How can you not think that? For his career he’s a 58.7% FG shooter, 87.3% from the stripe and a ungodly 48.8% from three. Do I really need to add anything to plead my case? He’s averaged 22 points a game for the last seven years and the only reason he didn’t do that for his first four is that he was stuck on the bench behind Earl Oliver! To think that nine teams passed on him in 2027 and I bet they are kicking themselves now. He’s also a willing passer, averaging 7.8 assists in 2034 before going back to a more attacking role. Best. Shooter. Ever.

#17 – PF Terry McKenzie (UCLA), 6’10”, 256lbs
Drafted - #2 by New York Knicks in 2025
Teams – New York, Dallas
Career Stats – 17.8 points, 1.2 assists, 9.0 rebounds, 1.1 steals, 0.9 blocks

To think that there are four players on this list that are playing for Dallas right now. Scary. Cutting his teeth in the big city, McKenzie moved away from all the glitz and the glamour to be the final cog in the Dallas juggernaut that rolled everyone and anyone to three titles. McKenzie might not have been the fancy player on those Mavericks teams but neither was Scottie Pippen at Chicago and look how good he was. “T-Mac” was the clutchest guy going around, and whenever Dallas needed a basket or a stop, they didn’t go to Ledaryl McMillian or Jack Dawkins, they went to this man. Coming out of college many thought that he wouldn’t be that good as he was a senior and had finished growing, how wrong they were.

#16 – SG Jason London (Dayton), 6’5”, 189lbs
Drafted - #15 by Chicago Bulls in 2026
Teams – Chicago, Denver, San Diego, Brooklyn, Phoenix, Washington, Seattle
Career Stats – 27.5 points, 2.2 assists, 4.0 rebounds, 1.0 steal, 0.3 blocks

Talk all you want about his horrible, soul sucking attitude, talk about how he walked out on the Brooklyn Nets when they were fighting in the NBA Finals, talk about how he set that homeless man on fire. Talk all you want about that stuff but right now, let’s talk about how damn good he is at basketball. This guy can flat out put the ball in the basket. That 27.5 point average is over eleven seasons which is just flat out insane, and to make things even crazier he has done it on 60% shooting. A big man shooting 60% for his career would be something to write home about, let alone a 6’5” SG. He does it was a calm look on his face like he doesn’t even care, like he is off thinking about something else. But ball don’t lie, he is the best scorer many people have ever seen and he isn’t stopping now (unless he gets thrown in jail.)
