Before beginning the 2013-2014 NBA league calendar, Kris Eisley gets a phone call from Houston Rockets' owner Larry Marble. He starts off by asking Eisley what he thought of his performance this past season. Kris knows that the team didn't perform as well as they could have, but he did all he could to put this team in the best position for the future.

" wrote:I think I did an OK job. No, we didn't reach any of my goals. At the time, they seemed within our reach but looking back they may have been a bit lofty. We didn't win nearly as many games as I had hoped, but I did shed some salary and we have developed a couple of our younger players. I could have done better, but all-in-all, I think I did the best that I could have done.

Mr. Marble agreed that we didn't achieve what we set out to this season, but he was happy that Kris stuck to the agreed upon budget. That always makes an owner happy. He didn't give Eisley an option of staying or going, he just told him to prepare for the draft and we will build this team together. Sounds like a plan, boss!

June 19, 2013

The NBA has announced that the New Orleans franchised will officially adopt a new nickname: the Pelicans. Now that they have relinquished the name "Hornets", Charlotte will revert back to their original mascot while ridding themselves of the Bobcats moniker.

June 20, 2013

Mr. Marble is blowing up Kris Eisley's phone again. This time, he's ready to talk about the 2013-2014 season. He now wants to know Eisely's thoughts on the upcoming season and predict how successful the Rockets will be.

" wrote:Well sir, we haven't had a chance to workout any draft prospects nor take a look at the free agents, so it is a bit difficult for me to say at this point. Do I expect us to win 23 games again next season? No way. But this year's draft isn't chock full of elite talent and we slid down to the 5th spot in the draft, so an instant-impact rookie probably isn't coming, if there even is one this year. I'll go out on a limb and say that this could be an average year.

" wrote:No playoffs, huh? Well if that's how it is then that's how it is but I hope that this isn't going to be the case for long. What are we looking at payroll wise for the season?

" wrote:We've got ample cap space that I will be attempting to spend on a big name free agent. Listen, sir, if we want to change the culture around here, we need to bring in the best and that will cost some money. We refrained from spending the cap space last year, now it is time to put it to good use. I would like to be able to spend right up to the cap. What do you think about that?

" wrote:Up to the cap? Fine, we can do that. But you better not throw this money away on a worthless free agent. Make the money count my friend. We want to win, but we have to be efficient about it. Good luck this year!

Interior defense and rebounding were two areas of the game that we struggled mightily at throughout the entire season. Nerlens Noel, the best shot blocker in college basketball last season, was mocked as the No. 1 pick to the Orlando Magic. No way did the Rockets think he would fall. As soon as David Stern announced Mason Plumlee to the Charlotte Hornets, our wishes came true and we quickly selected Noel with the 5th overall selection.

The Kings, while on the clock with the #8 pick, called Kris Eisley and offered the pick for Terrence Jones. As much as we liked Jones and his potential, he was playing behind both Chandler Parsons and Royce White at the small forward position while playing out of position at the power forward spot. We pulled the trigger.

Once we acquired the pick, we were torn between two great prospects: PG Trey Burke and F/C Cody Zeller. Jeremy Lin struggled to protect the ball last season and bringing in another young PG to push him was very tempting. In the end, we decided to select Cody Zeller to pair him with Nerlens Noel in the paint. We think when they both finally grow into their potentials, we will have two tremendous rebounders and defenders to go along with great personalities.

***Editor's Note***

I forgot to shut off international draft entry, so we got three highly rated international players in the draft. What I will do is to change them to real life 2013 draft prospects that didn't get drafted: Norvel Peele, Ray McCallum and Reggie Bullock. They will be changed in name, age, height and weight only and assume the attributes of the international players so that they are worthy of their draft spot.

June 30, 2013

Soon after the draft, Kris Eisley had serious thoughts about his point guard position. Jeremy Lin was a good player, but he was very turnover prone. After averaging over 4 turnovers a game, the Rockets desired a more steady hand at the point as well as a defensive presence.

Also, once Eisley moved Terrence Jones to Sacramento for the 8th overall pick, the decision was between Trey Burke and Cody Zeller. The Rockets selected the latter, but still yearned for Burke. After Memphis selected Burke with the 9th overall pick, Eisley perused their roster and saw that they were chock full of point guards, so he swooped in.

The Houston Rockets traded away their starting point guard, Jeremy Lin, along with a 2015 first round pick in exchange for both Mike Conley and Trey Burke as well as a 2016 first round pick. Conley has three years remaining on his deal, giving the Rockets some time to develop Burke and perhaps get him ready for a starting spot in the future. At worst, Burke will provide Houston with a backup point guard that they lacked all last season.

July 3, 2013

The first day of the Summer League is upon us and it is a huge evaluation period for the Rockets. They have plenty of youth on their squad that they need to get a good look at. The roster consists of five current Rockets under contract: Chandler Parsons, Royce White, Nerlens Noel, Cody Zeller and Trey Burke. Jerome Randle, looking to hang on to a roster spot, was also put on the summer league squad. The rest of the team was filled with invites: Jon Diebler, Dionte Christmas, Jarvis Varnardo, Christian Watford, Arsalan Kazemi and Ryan Kelly.

In the first game of the summer league, we beat the Jazz 105-84 behind Chandler Parsons’ 25 points, six boards, four assists and three steals. That will be the end of his summer league as we don’t need to see any more from him.

Trey Burke came out firing with 18 points, four assists and three boards. Dionte Christmas added 14 points of his own while Royce White, Jerome Randle and Cody Zeller all scored 12 points each. Nerlens Noel had just six points on three of five shooting, but also added four boards and five blocked shots.

July 5, 2013

Defense was optional today as the Rockets beat the Celtics 129-125. You don’t make many NBA rosters without playing at least a little defense, and with both teams up over 60% from the floor, I’m sure some players are in trouble of being let go.

Royce White dominated with 36 points, seven boards, five assists and two steals while shooting 17 for 23. The one wart of his game today were the nine turnovers he committed, but playing with an entirely different roster, that is going to happen.

Trey Burke continues to play well as he scored 25 points and hands out three assists. Jerome Randle scored 18 off the bench and had himself six helpers to go with it. Dionte Christmas had another good game with 15 points. Nerlens Noel scored ten, but only had two boards and no blocks. Cody Zeller didn’t play much better with nine points, three boards, two assists, a steal and a block.

Royce White will no longer be seeing any more minutes in the summer league. We will be looking to evaluate the rest of the roster and see if anyone can step up and be a leader of this team.

July 12, 2013

When we said we wanted to see who would step up, we weren’t exactly pointing the finger at Trey Burke as he has been better than advertised as of yet. In our 113-80 win over the Bucks, Burke took over from the opening tip on his way to a Summer League high 49 points to go with eight rebounds, six assists, two steals and a block! He shot 21 of 30 from the floor as he had it going from everywhere. What a performance from the rookie!

If it weren’t for Burke, Dionte Christmas would be all the buzz as he had himself a monster double-double with 34 points and 11 boards. Burke and Christmas attacked the paint with reckless abandon as the Rockets scored 80 points in the paint. Christmas may be looking to make a push for the backup shooting guard position for the Rockets.

Nerlens Noel had about as good of a game as we could can expect the young rookie to have with eight points, seven boards and four blocks. If he could average that in the regular season, we would be ecstatic! Jerome Randle, looking to convince Mr. Eisley that they could use a third point guard on the roster, had eight points and seven assists, but also seven turnovers. Cody Zeller had a ho-hum game with two points, five boards, two assists, a steal and a blocked shot.

July 12, 2013

How do you follow up a 49-point performance of a couple days ago? How about by scoring 59 in your next game?!? Trey Burke, once again, was a man possessed as he hit on 27 of his 44 attempts, five of which were threes, to score the new summer league high of 59 points. He also grabbed eight rebounds in the process. Burke has been everything Kris Eisley could have ever asked for and could push for serious minutes in the regular season.

Jerome Randle stepped up his game as well and had 15 points and 12 assists. Honestly, it didn’t matter who was passing the ball to Burke, you were getting an assists out of it. Nerlens Noel had his best game of the summer league with 18 points, seven boards and three blocks while Cody Zeller continues to be just a role player thus far with five points, three boards and two steals. He seems content doing all the little things for now, but hopefully he will learn to assert himself down the road.

We beat the Suns 117-102 and with one game left in the summer league, Kris Eisley has got to like what he sees from his young players.

July 12, 2013

Last game of the summer league and we lose to the Charlotte Hornets 119-89. Trey Burke was once again the high scorer with 27 points to go with six assists and five boards. Unfortunately, it took him 30 shots to score that many points. He will learn soon that when he is on the floor with James Harden, he won’t be shooting as much as he wants. Still, he had a terrific summer league and the Rockets are excited to have him aboard.

Dionte Christmas had 23 points and eight rebounds and will give Kris Eisley a lot to chew on when looking to fill out his roster. Christmas, who has played in Europe for a couple years, has worked tirelessly to find a home in the NBA. Maybe this is the year for him.

Jerome Randle had another up-and-down game, scoring 13, dishing out eight assists but also turning it over six times. We could do much worse for a third string point guard, but the question is will there be room on the roster for one?

Nerlens Noel had ten points, five boards and two blocks in his summer league finale. It’s probably too much to ask him to carry over his summer league averages to the regular season, but only time will tell.

Cody Zeller played 24 minutes and didn’t register a single point on three shot attempts. He did add seven rebounds with a steal and a block. Like Noel, he is severely underdeveloped and if given time to grow into their potentials, the Rockets could have a nasty 1-2 combo in the post.

July 25, 2013

Houston Rockets sign Ronnie Brewer to a 3-year contract with a team option worth $11,756,250. What drew the Rockets to Brewer were his defense, jumper shot to keep opposing defenses honest as well as his handles. Since limiting turnovers and playing better defense are our two keys this offseason, Brewer fit the bill perfectly and he comes at a relatively cheap price tag.

July 27, 2013

Today, the Rockets signed another player to their roster: Lamar Odom. The forward agreed to a two-year deal worth a total of $4 million. Houston has a team option on the second year of the deal. Odom is getting towards the end of his career, but he’s a smart player and can play both the small and the power forward positions. He will add depth to the front court and hopefully will be able to mentor some of the younger players as well as play some minutes in case of injury.

July 29, 2013

Sharpshooter J.J. Redick has signed a 3-year contract with the Houston Rockets worth up to $6,192,000. The final year of the deal is, again, a team option. Redick is a brilliant player that is lights out from deep. He will add great depth at the shooting guard position that can help stimulate some offense.

Kris Eisley also signs one of his favorite pickups from last season in Jerome Randle. He will be making a minimum contract of $762,195. All parties are glad to have Randle back aboard.

The Rockets now have 13 players on their roster with over $5 million in cap space remaining. Eisley has decided to stay away from the big name signing and to build through his draft picks. With the three multi-year signings he has made this week all have team options, he isn’t locked in to any of these guys for a long period of time.

October 30, 2013

The enigmatic Royce White, coming off a solid rookie season, is expected to play a huge role on this team this year. Based on expert rankings, he is ranked as the #6 small forward in the league and is considered the #1 sleeper to watch. The season preview says that the Rockets will be the 13th best team in the West, so not much of an improvement over last season. If Royce White lives up to some of the preseason hype, maybe he can help lead this team into the playoffs. He has seemingly started to get his anxiety disorder under control [Mental Health Rating = 52] and hopefully he can becomes a permanent member of this team on all road trips. Only time will tell.

November 2, 2013

San Antonio Spurs (0-0) vs. Houston Rockets (0-0)

Spurs – 87
Tony Parker – 22 PTS, 6 AST
Boris Diaw – 15 PTS, 8 REB, 4 AST
Tim Duncan – 13 PTS, 7 REB, 2 BLK

Rockets – 134
James Harden – 27 PTS (11/15 FG)
Royce White – 24 PTS, 6 REB, 4 AST, 2 STL
Mike Conley – 20 PTS, 6 STL, 4 AST, 4 REB
Chandler Parsons – 20 PTS, 9 REB, 5 AST
Nerlens Noel – 13 PTS, 5 REB, 4 BLK
Trey Burke – 12 PTS, 4 REB, 3 AST, 2 STL, 4 TO
Cody Zeller – 4 PTS, 6 REB

Wow, what a performance to open the season in front of the Houston faithful! The holdovers from last season took the reigns and dominated while the new faces of Conley and the three rookies played better than expected. Our 76 points in the paint to their 44 hopefully shows we will start winning games in the paint. We also forced 21 turnovers to help balloon our lead to 50 at one point!

November 4, 2013

Number generator is kind to the Rockets once again as Royce White travels with the team.

Houston Rockets (1-0) vs. Denver Nuggets (1-0)

Rockets – 97
James Harden – 18 PTS
Royce White – 14 PTS
Omer Asik – 13 PTS, 13 REB, 4 BLK
Chandler Parsons – 12 PTS, 3 STL
Trey Burke – 11 PTS, 3 AST
Nerlens Noel – 5 PTS, 4 REB, fouled out in 9 minutes

Nuggets – 138
Kenneth Faried – 26 PTS, 13 REB, 4 BLK
Danilo Gallinari – 28 PTS
Andre Iguodala – 10 PTS, 6 REB, 13 AST, 3 STL, 2 BLK

Remember that paint defense we were excited about? Well we allowed 84 paint points this game and got destroyed. We were dominated on the glass and coughed it up 25 times. Yuck! Guess we are coming back down to earth after that first game.

November 6, 2013

Cleveland Cavaliers (2-1) vs. Houston Rockets (1-1)

Cavaliers – 99
Andrew Bynum – 27 PTS, 4 REB
Kyrie Irving – 14 PTS, 10 REB, 7 AST
Anthony Randolph – 16 PTS

Rockets – 131
Chandler Parsons – 23 PTS, 5 REB, 3 AST, 2 BLK
James Harden – 21 PTS, 4 AST
Trey Burke – 19 PTS, 3 AST
Royce White – 18 PTS, 6 REB, 2 STL
JJ Redick – 10 PTS, 3 REB, 3 AST
Nerlens Noel – 6 PTS, 2 REB, 1 BLK
Cody Zeller – 4 PTS, 3 REB, 2 BLK

Back in the win column as we had ourselves an offensive explosion. Outside of the newly inked Andrew Bynum, we kept the Cavaliers in check offensively and also forced 20 turnovers. Wins are good!

November 7, 2013

Houston Rockets (2-1) vs. Dallas Mavericks (0-2)

Rockets – 126
James Harden – 25 PTS, 4 REB, 4 AST
Mike Conley – 20 PTS, 9 AST, 4 STL
Patrick Patterson – 22 PTS, 2 BLK
Royce White – 14 PTS, 3 REB, 3 AST
Chandler Parsons – 13 PTS, 4 REB, 4 AST
Cody Zeller – 6 PTS, 3 REB, 3 STL, 1 BLK
Nerlens Noel – 4 PTS, 3 REB, 3 AST, 4 BLK

Mavericks – 110
Chris Kaman – 24 PTS
Dirk Nowitzki – 14 PTS, 7 REB

Another big win for the Rockets and this one has extra meaning as we own the Mavericks’ 2014 first round pick thanks to the Donatas Motiejunas trade last season. Hopefully they continue to lose as this draft is absolutely stacked with talent!

November 10, 2013

Royce White, again, is on the team charter to Utah.

Houston Rockets (3-1) vs. Utah Jazz (0-4)

Rockets – 104
Mike Conley – 24 PTS, 8 AST
Royce White – 16 PTS, 5 REB, 4 AST
James Harden – 13 PTS (5-17 FG)
Omer Asik – 10 PTS, 11 REB, 2 BLK
Trey Burke – 8 PTS, 2 AST

Jazz – 113
Paul Millsap – 25 PTS, 13 REB, 3 STL
Al Jefferson – 25 PTS, 10 REB, 3 BLK
Alonzo Gee – 18 PTS, 7 REB
Gordon Hayward – 15 PTS
DJ Augustin – 12 PTS, 15 AST

You never like to give a team their first win of the season, but Utah is as physically tough a team as we will play all season long, especially in the paint. To be honest, we don’t have the strongest team in the league, especially when our big men are more of the athletic variety rather than bruisers like Millsap, Jefferson and Favors.

November 12, 2013

Houston Rockets (3-2) vs. Golden State Warriors (3-3)

Rockets – 92
James Harden – 14 PTS, 5 REB, 4 AST
Mike Conley – 13 PTS
Royce White – 11 PTS
Trey Burke – 11 PTS
Omer Asik – 10 PTS, 9 REB

Warriors – 115
Stephen Curry – 34 PTS, 7 AST, 6 REB, 2 STL
Klay Thompson – 29 PTS, 6 AST
Andrew Bogut – 15 PTS, 13 REB, 5 BLK

After getting blown out by 23 points in the 3rd quarter alone, there was no coming back in this one. We were outrebounded by 15 and shot just 41%. Just an ugly outing tonight.

Royce White, for all of his offensive gifts, is far and away our worst defensive player. He faces 11.3 drivers per game and stops 0.3 of them, good for a 2.9% stop percentage. He also allows one point per shot faced, but thankfully he faces the least amount of shots on the team, so that doesn’t hurt us as bad. We are going to move Chandler Parsons into the starting lineup and hope that bringing White off the bench will keep him from being as big of a defensive liability.

November 14, 2013

Los Angeles Clippers (3-2) vs. Houston Rockets (3-3)

Clippers – 122
DeAndre Jordan – 31 PTS, 13 REB, 5 BLK
Blake Griffin – 24 PTS, 19 REB, 3 BLK
Chris Paul – 17 PTS, 10 AST

Rockets – 130
Omer Asik – 14 PTS, 14 REB, 4 BLK, 3 STL
Royce White – 23 PTS, 3 REB, 2 AST
James Harden – 21 PTS
Chandler Parsons – 19 PTS
Trey Burke – 19 PTS
Mike Conley – 13 PTS, 5 AST, 5 STL
Nerlens Noel – 6 PTS, 6 REB, 4 BLK

In yet another defense-optional game, the Rockets pull out a win over a very good team. This was back-and-forth as there were 27 lead changes and 16 ties throughout. The kicker was the turnover differential as we had just eight compared to their 20. Ball protection was a key to our offseason and it paid off tonight.
